Laser Scanning Aggregates For Real-Time Property Identification, Andrew Branin
Laser Scanning Aggregates For Real-Time Property Identification, Andrew Branin
Theses and Dissertations
The strength of concrete and asphalt is provided by the aggregate stone within it, and as such maintaining a high standard for these materials is crucial in ensuring that these materials meet their projected design lives. One key factor to consider for an aggregate's long-term strength is its mineralogy, which can affect the strength and long-term performance of these materials. Conventional chemical testing techniques and petrographic examination methods presently exist which can be used to identify and/or quantify problematic minerals, however these tests are typically costly, time consuming, and/or require significant sample preparation and a controlled lab environment. The purpose …

This research considers whether a person's demographic and experiential attributes play a significant role in how they perceive the presence or absence of hazards in a given situation. The goal of the research is to show that participants with enlisted military experience, prior to being commissioned as a junior officer, would be more successful at identifying the hazards presented in military scenarios than those who had only been trained on the process via their pre-commissioning and initial entry courses of instruction. The research study involves the use of two surveys with realistic military scenarios including both Foot March and Maintenance …
Using Unrestricted Mobile Sensors To Infer Tapped And Traced User Inputs, Trang Duyen Nguyen
Using Unrestricted Mobile Sensors To Infer Tapped And Traced User Inputs, Trang Duyen Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
As of January 2014, 58% of Americans over the age of 18 own a smart phone. Of these smart phones, Android devices provide some security by requiring that third-party application developers declare to users which components and features their applications will access. However, many of the real-time environmental sensors on devices are exempt from this requirement. We evaluate the possibility of exploiting this freedom to discretely use these sensors and expand on previous work by developing an application that can use the gyroscope and accelerometer to interpret what the user has written, even of trace input is used. Trace input …

Ligament Model Fidelity In Finite Element Analysis Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Mitchell Scott Hortin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project is to quantify the effects of increasing spinal ligament fidelity on the mechanics of the human lumbar spine using finite element analysis (FEA). In support of this goal, a material characterization study was completed to provide anisotropic, nonlinear material parameters for the human anterior longitudinal ligament. (ALL). Cadaveric samples of the human ALL were tested using a punch test technique. Multi- axial force-deformation data were gathered and fit to a commonly used transversely isotropic material model using an FEA system identification routine. The resulting material parameters produced a curve that correlated well with the experimental …
Globally Consistent Map Generation In Gps-Degraded Environments, Paul William Nyholm
Globally Consistent Map Generation In Gps-Degraded Environments, Paul William Nyholm
Theses and Dissertations
Heavy reliance on GPS is preventing unmanned air systems (UAS) from being fully inte- grated for many of their numerous applications. In the absence of GPS, GPS-reliant UAS have difficulty estimating vehicle states resulting in vehicle failures. Additionally, naively using erro- neous measurements when GPS is available can result in significant state inaccuracies. We present a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) solution to GPS-degraded navigation that al- lows vehicle state estimation and control independent of global information. Optionally, a global map can be constructed from odometry measurements and can be updated with GPS measurements while maintaining robustness against outliers. We detail …
Concurrent Engineering Through Parallelization Of The Design-Analysis Process, Eric Joseph Wardell
Concurrent Engineering Through Parallelization Of The Design-Analysis Process, Eric Joseph Wardell
Theses and Dissertations
The disconnect between the way CAD and analysis applications handle model geometry has long been a hindrance to engineering design. Current industry practices often utilize outdated forms of geometry transfer between these different engineering software applications such as neutral file formats and direct translations. Not only to these current practices slow the engineering design process but they also hinder the integration of design and analysis programs. This thesis proposes a new, multi-user, integrated design-analysis architecture which allows auxiliary functions such as analysis and computer-aided manufacturing to be better connected with the computer-aided design. It is hypothesized that this new architecture will …
Frame Synchronization Techniques For Inet-Formatted Soqpsk-Tg Communications, Andrew Dennis Mcmurdie
Frame Synchronization Techniques For Inet-Formatted Soqpsk-Tg Communications, Andrew Dennis Mcmurdie
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, frame synchronization for iNET formatted SOQPSK-TG communications is considered. Frame synchronization for M-ary linear modulations (MQAM, MPSK, etc.) are known in the literature using pilot detection methods, but are based on a signal model that does not apply to SOQPSK-TG. Maximum likelihood frame synchronizers are derived for an SOQPSK-TG system following assumptions found in the literature. The analysis shows that a reinterpretation of known detectors operating on the samples of the received waveform and locally stored samples of the pilot is the optimum approach for this case. Simulation results for an AWGN channel and several multipath channels …

An Investigation Of Off-Design Operation In High Suction Performance Inducers, Ryan Collins Cluff
An Investigation Of Off-Design Operation In High Suction Performance Inducers, Ryan Collins Cluff
Theses and Dissertations
Three-dimensional two-phase unsteady CFD simulations were run on three and four-blade inducers for the purpose of analyzing differences in cavitation stability at design and off-design flow rates. At design flow rates, there were very small differences between the breakdown curves for the three and four-bladed inducers. However, at lower cavitation numbers, the three-bladed inducer exhibited up to three times the rotor forces than the four-bladed inducer. When moving to off-design flow rates, both inducers experienced multiple modes of cavitation instabilities including rotating cavitation, alternate-blade cavitation, and cavitation surge. The four-bladed inducer began experiencing the formation of these modes of instability …
System Wide Trust Contagion Effect, Rian M. Mehta
System Wide Trust Contagion Effect, Rian M. Mehta
Theses and Dissertations
Trust is integral in any service industry, especially in the consumeroriented field of aviation. The first step of this research is the reorganization of the importance of trust. To understand its importance on the industry, it is necessary to study trust and its effects in depth. The purpose of this study is to further explore the relationship between the passengers’ trust in automation, and trust in humans. Oftentimes, when automation fails, some human is responsible for harboring the blame. The theory of System Wide Trust (SWT) has only been recently developed, but its effect on the field of aviation is …
Consumers’ Trust In Pilots Based On Pilot’S Preference For Use Of Breathalyzer In The Cockpit, Katie Marie Reid
Consumers’ Trust In Pilots Based On Pilot’S Preference For Use Of Breathalyzer In The Cockpit, Katie Marie Reid
Theses and Dissertations
Trust has been studied across disciplines for years, with the focus looking at trust between individuals, between individuals and organizations, and between organizations (Lee & See, 2004). Establishing trust between people has been an issue for decades (Simpson, 2011), but defining it has proved difficult as well. Within the aviation industry, there has been a lack of research exploring how trust is affected from the consumer’s or passenger’s perspective. Aviation is one of the major forms of transportation in today’s culture, and understanding consumers’ trust is important for safety and economic reasons. The current study will use a 5-point Likert-type …

A Multi-Objective Optimization Method For Maximizing The Value Of System Evolvability Under Uncertainty, Jason Daniel Watson
Theses and Dissertations
System evolvability is vital to the longevity of large-scale complex engineered systems. The need for evolvability in complex systems is a result of their long service lives, rapid advances to their integrated technologies, unforeseen operating conditions, and emerging system requirements. In recent years, quantifiable metrics have been introduced for measuring the evolvability of complex systems based on the amount of excess capability in the system. These metrics have opened opportunities for optimization of systems with evolvability as an objective. However, there are several aspects of such an optimization that require further consideration. For example, there is a trade-off between the …

Active Control Of The Human Voice From A Sphere, Monty J. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the application of active noise control (ANC) to speech. ANC has had success reducing tonal noise. In this work, that success was extended to noise that is not completely tonal but has some tonal elements such as speech. Limitations such as causality were established on the active control of human speech. An optimal configuration for control actuators was developed for a sphere using a genetic algorithm. The optimal error sensor location was found from exploring the nulls associated with the magnitude of the radiated pressure with reference to the primary pressure field. Both numerically predicted and experimentally …
Impact Of Collagen-Incorporation Within Electrospun Vascular Conduits On The Inflammatory Response And Conduit Mechanics, Karamveer Birthare
Impact Of Collagen-Incorporation Within Electrospun Vascular Conduits On The Inflammatory Response And Conduit Mechanics, Karamveer Birthare
Theses and Dissertations
Current surgical alternatives for treating coronary artery diseases are limited in patients with systemic vascular diseases due to unavailability of suitable autologous vessels. The overall goal of this research project is to develop an appropriate tissue engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) for small-diameter (<6 mm) arteries. Current grafts fail from intimal hyperplasia, caused by hyperproliferation of the smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and graft thrombosis, caused by lack of functional endothelium. Formation of the endothelium, and production of pro-inflammatory species that limits the long term patency, are partially due to the accumulation of oxidized lipid species. In this study, the scaffold composition was systematically varied to assess the inflammatory response and lipid oxidation levels in a rat peritoneal model. Specifically, we determined the collagen to PCL ratio required to limit the production of pro-inflammatory species, while maintaining the required mechanical strength for vascular grafts. Electrospun conduits were prepared from 0%, 10%, and 25% blends of collagen/ PCL (w/w) and implanted in the rat peritoneal cavity for 4 weeks. The results of the study showed that scaffold composition can be varied while keeping the fiber diameter similar. Results from 10% blend conduits showed significantly higher expression for contractile markers compared to the 25% and 0% blend conditions. In general, adding collagen to the PCL conduits reduced the accumulation of oxidized species within the implanted conduits. All conduits exhibited sufficient tensile strength post- implantation. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that introducing 10% collagen into electrospun scaffolds limits the pro-inflammatory characteristics of the recruited peritoneal cells that can potentially improve patency of the TEVGs.
Modeling Force Main Systems For Surge Analysis And Studying Dynamic Response Due To Water Hammer, Wissam Al-Taliby
Modeling Force Main Systems For Surge Analysis And Studying Dynamic Response Due To Water Hammer, Wissam Al-Taliby
Theses and Dissertations
The major impact of water hammer on force mains integrity include excessive pressure oscillation that is usually accompanied by pipe vibrations. Models for simulating force main water hammer response have been developed. All of these models were based on the method of characteristics (MOC) and most of them were not calibrated for the lack of efficient field data. Although predicting maximum pressure during the first wave cycle is sufficient in most applications, some applications require precise prediction of pressure damping. One-dimensional models usually over predict pressure oscillation beyond the first cycle since they are based on steady friction expressions. It …

Engineering Properties Of Pile Rebound Soils Based On Cone Penetration Testing, Hadeel Dekhn
Theses and Dissertations
High pile rebound (HPR) has been identified by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to occur during the installation of square prestressed concrete piles at many sites in Florida. Significant pile rebound values of up to 1.5 inch/blow were measured resulting in increased blow counts. Pile refusal is a common occurrence when blow count exceeds 240 blow/ft; leading to pile redesign and economic consequences. The overall objective of this research is to identify the engineering properties of soil deposits which may cause HPR and develop improved correlations that may be used to predict HPR during the design process. Seven sites were …

Theses and Dissertations
Organizational learning seeks to proactively expand the knowledge base of an organizational entity by incorporating knowledge, skills, and experience into the collective conscience of the company through the development of routines rather than relying on individual employees for these traits. Valuable experience gained by individuals who weather economic downturn with their companies must be absorbed into the corporate structure in a meaningful way so that it may be accessible for use during future recessions. This research asks what was learned by individuals during the most recent recession, what mechanisms were employed to retain and utilize this knowledge, and what cultures, …

A Probabilistic Assessment Of Failure For Air Force Building Systems, Stephanie L. Alley
Theses and Dissertations
Deteriorating and failing federal facilities represent a cost to leaders and organizations as they attempt to manage and maintain these assets. Currently the Air Force employs the BUILDERTM Sustainment Management System to predict the reliability of building components. At different system levels, however, the probabilities of failure are not predicted. The purpose of this research is to provide probabilistic models which predict the probability of failure at the system level of a building s infrastructure hierarchy. This research investigated the plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, and electrical systems. Probabilistic models were created for these systems by using fault trees with …
Automatic Configuration Of Programmable Logic Controller Emulators, Phillip C. Warner
Automatic Configuration Of Programmable Logic Controller Emulators, Phillip C. Warner
Theses and Dissertations
Programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which are used to control much of the world's critical infrastructures, are highly vulnerable and exposed to the Internet. Many efforts have been undertaken to develop decoys, or honeypots, of these devices in order to characterize, attribute, or prevent attacks against Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks. Unfortunately, since ICS devices typically are proprietary and unique, one emulation solution for a particular vendor's model will not likely work on other devices. Many previous efforts have manually developed ICS honeypots, but it is a very time intensive process. Thus, a scalable solution is needed in order to automatically …
