Structurally Integrated Reconfigurable Wideband Array For Conformal Applications, Michael Damon Wright Jan 2018

Structurally Integrated Reconfigurable Wideband Array For Conformal Applications, Michael Damon Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Structurally integrated conformal antennas offer significant advantages over traditional bolt on antennas, especially for air vehicle applications. The ability to leverage the entire structure allows for unconventionally large antennas and arrays to be implemented in a manner which does not detract from the aerodynamic, structural or aesthetic qualities of the vehicle. Works along this line have included Slotted Waveguide Antenna Stiffened Structures (SWASS), conformal helix and spiral antennas, Log Periodic Dipole Arrays (LPDA), and other antennas.

An area which has not been investigated to date is the possibility of implementing reconfigurable antennas in a structural environment. There are inherent challenges …

Modulation Of Amyloid-Β Aggregation Via Small Molecules And Glycine Zipper Alterations, Steven Zebulon Vance Jan 2018

Modulation Of Amyloid-Β Aggregation Via Small Molecules And Glycine Zipper Alterations, Steven Zebulon Vance

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative disease. Nationally, AD is the 6th leading cause of death and the only top 10 killer of Americans that cannot be slowed, cured, or prevented. AD is characterized by the deposition of extracellular plaques of aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ). Aβ originates from the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a transmembrane protein that is cleaved to form a short and inert protein fragment called Aβ. However, Aβ undergoes a nucleation process wherein aggregates from soluble oligomers to insoluble fibrils are formed. While uncertainty remains as to the exact mechanism, studies have associated …

Enhance Flow Boiling In Microchannels By Regulating Two-Phase Transport Patterns, Wenming Li Jan 2018

Enhance Flow Boiling In Microchannels By Regulating Two-Phase Transport Patterns, Wenming Li

Theses and Dissertations

Flow boiling in microchannels is one of the most promising cooling techniques for microelectronics. Using latent heat by vaporization can significantly improve heat dissipation of high power density electronic devices. Most of the failure of electronic devices is induced by the occurrence of critical heat flux (CHF), which defines the maximum operating conditions. However, the vigorous rapid generation of vapor through phase change leads to chaotic two-phase flows in microchannels, resulting in flowinstability in terms of severe flow, temperature and pressure drop fluctuations. Particularly, the very well-known bubble confinement exacerbates the two-phase flow instabilities and greatly deteriorates heat transfer performance …

The tailoring potential of composites to achieve high specific stiffness and strength has promoted them as promising candidates for constructing lightweight structures. From that aspect, designers have tackled the problem of designing composite laminates, which is …

Multiscale Deformation And Failure Behavior Of Polymer Bonded Explosives Subjected To High Rate Loading, Suraj Muthiramalil Ravindran Jan 2018

Multiscale Deformation And Failure Behavior Of Polymer Bonded Explosives Subjected To High Rate Loading, Suraj Muthiramalil Ravindran

Theses and Dissertations

Polymer bonded explosives (PBX) are heterogeneous granular composites with a high-volume fraction of solid. Typically, they contain 80-95% explosive crystals and 5- 20% soft polymer binder. These materials are subjected to different loading conditions during their service life. The main function of the soft binder is to reduce shock sensitivity to prevent an accidental explosion. However, there have been inadvertent detonations in these materials during transportation and handling. The reason for such unintentional explosion is not well understood. It is commonly accepted that the formation of local hightemperature regions, called ‘hot spots’, is the primary cause. Hotspot formation is associated …

Changes Of Dispersal Ability In An Isolated Population, Connor Bacon Jan 2018

Changes Of Dispersal Ability In An Isolated Population, Connor Bacon

Theses and Dissertations

Dispersal is a core mechanism in the maintenance of metapopulations. It maintains genetic diversity by connecting subpopulations and generates new populations to replace those that die out. However, as populations become more isolated, as occurs in habitat fragmentation, dispersal becomes more difficult. This should lead to selective pressure against dispersive individuals, causing a reduction in dispersal traits. Over time, this can lead to variation in dispersal traits among populations. We examine this idea using an extreme case of isolation in Euphydryas gillettii, a population that has remained completely isolated for forty years. By comparing this population to a baseline established …

Theses and Dissertations

X-750 is a nickel-chromium based super alloy of usefulness in a wide variety of applications such as gas turbines, rocket engines, nuclear reactors, pressure vessels, tooling, and aircraft structures. Its good mechanical properties are due to the strengthening from precipitation of γ′ particles upon prior ageing heat treatment. In this work, the effect of such heat treatment on the mechanical properties, tensile behavior, and fracture mechanisms of X-750 was studied at various temperatures by comparing it with a non-aged, solution annealed X-750. Tensile tests were conducted from room temperatures up to 900 °C at three separate strain rates (10-3, 10-4, …

Association Between Mechanics And Biology In Vascular Graft Remodeling, David Andrew Prim Jan 2018

Association Between Mechanics And Biology In Vascular Graft Remodeling, David Andrew Prim

Theses and Dissertations

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) restores myocardial perfusion in patients with severe coronary artery disease by utilizing autografts – usually at least one of the internal thoracic artery (ITA), radial artery (RA), and great saphenous vein (GSV) – to bypass stenosed regions of coronary arteries. While decades of research and clinical improvements have made CABG an indispensable procedure, tens of thousands of grafts fail each year, which is due, at least in part, to an inability of the source vessels to adapt to the altered stimuli of the coronary circulation. In this dissertation, we first quantify and compare the mechanical …

Complete Measurement System For Measuring High Voltage And Electrical Field Using Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Nikola Stan Jan 2018

Complete Measurement System For Measuring High Voltage And Electrical Field Using Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Nikola Stan

Theses and Dissertations

A slab-coupled optical fiber sensor (SCOS) falls into a narrow class of all-dielectric optical fiber electric field sensors, which makes it a perfect candidate for measurements of high electric fields in environments where presence of conductors is highly perturbing to the system under test. Its nonlinear response to high fields requires a new nonlinear calibration technique. A nonlinear calibration method is explained and demonstrated to successfully measure high electric fields, as well as high voltages with dynamic range up to 50 dB. Furthermore, a SCOS can be fitted into narrow spaces and make highly localized measurements due to its small …

Fibronectin Mechanics And Signaling In Tgf-Β1-Induced Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition, Lauren Griggs Jan 2018

Fibronectin Mechanics And Signaling In Tgf-Β1-Induced Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition, Lauren Griggs

Theses and Dissertations

Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) is a dynamic process by which a distinct change in the phenotype and function of epithelial cells render them as mesenchymal cells. Characteristics of mesenchymal cells include the ability to invade, increased migratory kinetics and heightened resistance to apoptosis. Therefore, there is a strong need to fully understand the mechanism for the induction of EMT in pathological conditions such as carcinoma progression. Recent advances highlight two pivotal contributors, soluble growth factor (gf) signals, and mechanical signals, in the process. However, to date, no clear mechanism exists linking the two in epithelial transdifferentiation. Transforming Growth Factor-β1 …

Reducing Uncertainty In Head And Neck Radiotherapy With Plastic Robotics, Mark R. Ostyn Jan 2018

Reducing Uncertainty In Head And Neck Radiotherapy With Plastic Robotics, Mark R. Ostyn

Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest challenges in achieving accurate positioning in head and neck radiotherapy is that the anatomy at and above the cervical spine does not act as a single, mechanically rigid body. Current immobilization techniques contain residual uncertainties that are especially present in the lower neck that cannot be reduced by setting up to any single landmark. The work presented describes the development of a radiotherapy friendly mostly-plastic 6D robotic platform for positioning independent landmarks, (i.e., allowing remote, independent positioning of the skull relative to landmarks in the thorax), including analysis of kinematics, stress, radiographic compatibility, trajectory planning, physical …

Hydrophobicity Of Low Temperature Vibrating Surfaces, Christian Fergusson Jan 2018

Hydrophobicity Of Low Temperature Vibrating Surfaces, Christian Fergusson

Theses and Dissertations

This study proposes a method to enhance the anti-icing capabilities of superhydrophobic surfaces by utilizing vibration to further reduce contact time of an impacting droplet in addition to keeping the droplet in the Cassie-Baxter regime, where surface adhesion is lower than the opposing Wenzel regime. We tested this with two methods: by investigating the effects of vibration normal to the plane of a superhydrophobic surface being impacted by water droplets in a room temperature environment, with the surface horizontal in a room temperature environment and tiled in a subzero degree environment. The amplitude and frequency of the vibration were varied …

Current in vitro exposure systems require additional instruments to control temperature and humidity, making the system bulky and difficult to take to the field. The Portable In Vitro Exposure Cassette (PIVEC) was designed for personal monitoring, characterized using copper nanoparticles, tested with alveolar cells, and set-up for real-time monitoring. Three differently sized copper nanoparticles, 40-800 nm, were dispersed as a dry aerosol and measured gravimetrically and on a number concentration basis …

Improving The Performance And Energy Efficiency Of Emerging Memory Systems, Yuhua Guo Jan 2018

Improving The Performance And Energy Efficiency Of Emerging Memory Systems, Yuhua Guo

Theses and Dissertations

Modern main memory is primarily built using dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. As DRAM chip scales to higher density, there are mainly three problems that impede DRAM scalability and performance improvement. First, DRAM refresh overhead grows from negligible to severe, which limits DRAM scalability and causes performance degradation. Second, although memory capacity has increased dramatically in past decade, memory bandwidth has not kept pace with CPU performance scaling, which has led to the memory wall problem. Third, DRAM dissipates considerable power and has been reported to account for as much as 40% of the total system energy and this …

Modeling Fluid Motion Over Fibrous Surfaces, Delli Ganesh Venkateshan Jan 2018

Modeling Fluid Motion Over Fibrous Surfaces, Delli Ganesh Venkateshan

Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of this project has been to develop a computational model for quantifying the interactions between of a body of fluid and a fibrous surface. To achieve this goal, one has to develop a model to create virtual structures that resemble the morphology of a fibrous surface (Objective-1) as well as a model that can simulate the flow of a fluid over these virtual surfaces (Objective-2). To achieve the first objective, we treated fibers as an array of beads interconnected through viscoelastic elements (springs and dampers). The uniqueness of our algorithm lies in its ability to simulate the …

Liquid Interaction With Non-Wettable Surfaces Structured With Macroscopic Ridges, Mehran Abolghasemibizaki

Theses and Dissertations

Self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, dropwise-condensation, and drag-reduction are some applications in which superhydrophobic surfaces are implemented. To date, all the studies associated with superhydrophobic surfaces have been dedicated to understanding the liquid interaction with surfaces that are macroscopically smooth. The current study investigates the solid-liquid interaction of such surfaces which are fully decorated with macroscopic ridges (ribbed surfaces). In particular, the drop motion and impact on our newly designed non-wettable ribbed surface have been investigated in this work. Our experimental investigations have shown that liquid drops move faster on the ribbed surfaces due to lower friction induced by such a surface …
