Development And Characterization Of Low-Cost Out Of Autoclave Fiber Metal Structures, Codrington Edward Barzey Jr.
Development And Characterization Of Low-Cost Out Of Autoclave Fiber Metal Structures, Codrington Edward Barzey Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Fiber metal structures are structures formed by combining fiber reinforced plastics and metallic sheets. The most widely used fiber metal structure is GLARE®. GLARE® is solely used in the aerospace industry, due to its unmatched weight, crack propagation resistance, and inflated cost. Its inflated cost is attributed to the high-performance requirements of the industry that can only be achieved with high-cost materials and manufacturing processes. Unlike the aerospace industry, there are other industries that have far lower performance requirements but can still benefit by using fiber metal structures to reduce weight while improving performance. Traditionally, fiber metal structures are fabricated …

Residual Strength Estimation Of Degraded Bonded Joints Based On Non-Destructive Evaluations, Guilherme Garcia Momm
Residual Strength Estimation Of Degraded Bonded Joints Based On Non-Destructive Evaluations, Guilherme Garcia Momm
Theses and Dissertations
Pioneer designers acknowledged structural bonding advantages over other joining methods, sparking many aerospace applications. Nonetheless, durability issues, weak bonds, and the inability to non-destructively interrogate bond quality after-the-fact hindered widespread bonding use. These challenges also contributed to several aircraft accidents, fostering extensive related research. Firstly, we examined the bonding operational history in aviation. The challenge to simulate or experimentally reproduce bonded joints’ long-term behavior under real-life conditions magnifies the value of in-service data. Since 1944 the International Civil Aviation Organization has recommended investigating aircraft incidents/accidents. Among numerous investigation reports publicly available, we identified 73 bond-related occurrences involving type-certified aircraft registered …

Texas coastal communities are at constant risk of hurricane impacts every storm season. It is especially important to model and predict storm surge variations during hurricane and storm events. Traditionally, hurricane storm surge predictions have been the result of numerical hydrodynamics based simulations. This type of simulations often requires high amounts of computational resources and complex ocean modelling efforts. Recently, machine learning techniques are being explored and are gaining popularity in hydrologic and ocean engineering modelling fields based on their performance to model nonlinear relationships and low computational requirements for prediction. Advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (A.I.) demand …
Behavior Of Narrow Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls With Secondary Reinforcement, Abraham Alejandro Alvarez Reyna
Behavior Of Narrow Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls With Secondary Reinforcement, Abraham Alejandro Alvarez Reyna
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls have been used in past decades as an alternative, cost-effective, and performance solution to replace conventional retaining walls. AASHTO guidelines recommend a reinforcement length-to-height ratio of 0.7. However, this ratio is not applicable where there exist constraint conditions. FHWA guidelines recommend the minimum reinforcement length-to-height ratio of 0.3 for Narrow Mechanically Stabilized Earth (NMSE) walls in these cases. However, published guidelines have not sufficiently accounted for several parameters influencing NMSE performance and efficiency. Using finite element analysis (PLAXIS 2D), this study focuses on finding a relation between the length-to-height ratio and other parameters/components of the …

Computer Vision Of Analog Gauges As An Alternative To Digital Flight Test Instrumentation, Michael William James
Computer Vision Of Analog Gauges As An Alternative To Digital Flight Test Instrumentation, Michael William James
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, there are a couple of options to gather stick force data from flight test aircraft. Either the aircraft is instrumented with costly piezoelectric force sensors and recorders integrated into the aircraft stick, or the test pilot must use a traditional analog stick force gauge with a pointer and telltale. The conventional stick force gauge works well when the pilot has the mental and physical bandwidth to read and remember, or record, the stick force values throughout the maneuver but does not suffice when in a task saturated, high g force maneuver such as the windup turn. This project proposes …
