Investigation Of Skid Resistance On Asphalt Pavements In Utah, Aaron B. Smith
Investigation Of Skid Resistance On Asphalt Pavements In Utah, Aaron B. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Friction is one of the essential aspects of pavement performance and safety. Unfortunately, the rate at which the friction data are being collected exceeds the rate at which the data can be proficiently analyzed. Furthermore, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) lacks long-term trend analysis for the many years of locked-wheel skid trailer (LWST) data collected in Utah. In addition, UDOT is missing a statistically adequate correlation equation between friction-testing devices. Likewise, only one method is used in Utah to prequalify aggregates for use in pavements. Finally, there has not been an investigation of the potential use of lithium silicate …

Carbon Fiber Interleaved Polyester Laminate Strength Testing With Correlation In Finite Element Simulations, Hieu Le Huynh
Carbon Fiber Interleaved Polyester Laminate Strength Testing With Correlation In Finite Element Simulations, Hieu Le Huynh
Theses and Dissertations
Delamination of composite structures under impact conditions has been a catastrophic and economic issue in the past and is still a problem today. Many techniques have been used to improve the toughness in composite laminates. An example of a previous dissertation was performed by Adnan Gheryani titled: “Analysis of Polyester Interleafs for Toughness Enhancement in Composite Structures.” Gheryani’s study shows that adding in polyester interleafs into composite laminates made primarily from carbon fiber fabric adds ductility and resists crack growth after delamination, which leads to improvement of the overall toughness of the laminate. However, improvements in toughness, strength, and stiffness …

Efficient And Scalable Algorithms For Estimating Structural Properties Of Large Graphs, Shiju Li
Theses and Dissertations
Large complex networks and graphs are everywhere. Examples include social networks, web graphs, communication networks, power grids, and transportation networks. The ongoing rapid expansion of such networks has triggered a tremendous amount of attention in various disciplines. Estimating the structural and topological properties of the large complex networks has been at the heart of the understanding of the networks. However, such estimations often become technically challenging. This dissertation is focused on how to estimate three non-trivial structural quantities on large networks efficiently and scalably by transcending the current state-of-the-art algorithms. The structural quantities to estimate are (1) a function of …
Complexity Analysis And Parallel Implementation Of The Well Optimized Linear Finder (Wolf) Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation (Atc) Algorithm On Gpu Technology With Comparative Analysis Of Traditional Phase Diverse Atc Methods, Yang Xin
Theses and Dissertations
A new high-speed, high-accuracy general transfer function estimation method for diversitybased problems, known as the Well Optimized Linear Finder Algorithm (WOLF Algorithm), has been developed [1]. Compared to the traditional phase diversity ATC methods, the WOLF Algorithm has less computational complexity and better approximation of the Optical Transfer Function (OTF) and consequently the entrance pupil phases. We compare the time complexity between the traditional Phase Diversity atmospheric turbulence compensation approach and the WOLF Algorithm. The results show that the WOLF Algorithm is dramatically faster than traditional phase diversity methods theoretically. We also implement the time complexity results of the WOLF …
Infrared Electric Field Enhancement Via A Hyperbolic-Metalens-Coupled Nanoantenna, Mohamed Jebril Kyamo
Infrared Electric Field Enhancement Via A Hyperbolic-Metalens-Coupled Nanoantenna, Mohamed Jebril Kyamo
Theses and Dissertations
The development of near- and mid-infrared applications requires high enhancement of the electric field intensity (EFI) and a high absorption cross-section of the electric field. The high enhancement of EFI can be obtained by concentrating optical energy to areas much smaller than the diffraction limit or by using surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Noble metals such as gold (Au) or silver (Ag) are not feasible for infrared (IR) applications because of high losses, lack of tunability, low resolution, and low-intensity enhancement. Our methods to solve these problems are based on appropriate metamaterial selection and on coupling systems with optimization of their …

Theses and Dissertations
Stress shielding is a term commonly used in literature to describe a bone density reducing phenomenon which occurs due to long-term exposure of bone tissue to sub-homeostatic levels of mechanical stimuli. A number of mechanobiological models ranging in complexity and purpose have been developed with the general overall intent of predicting bone remodeling behavior under a set of prescribed conditions. A previously developed heuristic model is expanded in the present work through model calibration with physiological data and the development of a reduced bone-implant-construct (BIC) mechanical model configurable for patient factors such as age, gender, and associated bone properties. The …
Detailing Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Anchorage For Shear Strengthening, Paul Joseph Ryan
Detailing Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Anchorage For Shear Strengthening, Paul Joseph Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) have increased in popularity in the repair and strengthening of reduced shear capacity of concrete bridges. Significant design challenges arise when using CFRP to repair or strengthen bridge girders as the top faces of girders are in contact with decking (i.e. the members cannot be fully wrapped). A full wrap laminates all faces with CFRP and ensures that the failure mode is governed by shear fracture combined with, or followed by, fracture of the CFRP. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Structural Design Manual permits three-sided wrapping schemes (i.e. U-wraps), but the CFRP must be …

Fog is a phenomenon that is widely known to affect the aviation industry adversely, as evidenced by economic losses due to the hindrance of fog on airport operations. This is because fog has been a consistent cause for delays, diversions, and cancellations of scheduled commercial airline flights that have subsequently resulted in a substantial negative economic impact on the transportation industry as well as society. This study’s purpose was to determine suitable predictors of the occurrence of radiation fog at U.S. airports. It assessed an extant Fog Stability Index (FSI) and 1-Day Persistence model for their reliability in predicting radiation …
Electrically Conductive Bearing Adapter Polymer Pad For Use In Freight Railcar Service Applications, Jesse M. Aguilera
Electrically Conductive Bearing Adapter Polymer Pad For Use In Freight Railcar Service Applications, Jesse M. Aguilera
Theses and Dissertations
Many freight railcars rest on polymer adapter pads made of injection-molded Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) polymers which feature two copper studs to provide electrical conductivity through the adapter pads, which power onboard systems. In service, pads experience impact and cyclic loading, resulting in wear and plastic compression of the copper studs. This leads to signal interruptions and periodic replacement of the polymer pads, which results in downtime due to maintenance and reduced reliability since pad failure is unpredictable. These limitations in the current design are the impetus to create an electrically conductive polymer adapter pad that does not rely on the …

After taking FTE 5702 – Stability and Control class, taught by Dr.Kimberlin, I understood the concept of using an aircraft and then testing how it handles in the air. Almost all flight tests done on aircraft are done by the manufacturer. Some aircraft may have a lot of comprehensive information available, while others have little to no information. It can also be hard to find the specific data that a pilot or owner desires. These various tests allow a greater understanding of aircraft stability and performance available for analysis and relating. The aircraft I flew during FTE 5702 class was …
Nanomechanical Characterization Of Vascular Tissue Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Ana Isabel Delgado Peralta
Nanomechanical Characterization Of Vascular Tissue Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Ana Isabel Delgado Peralta
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular morphogenesis and pathophysiology have been associated with the mechanical properties of the vessel wall. In this work, nanomechanical properties of diseased arteries and control groups were quantified using the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Both tip sizes of 20nm and 5µm were used for examining the local and global stiffness. First, we measured the stiffness as a potential index factor of the mice’s aortic aneurysm. Results have shown the stiffness of mice aortic aneurysm is 58.84 ± 30.26 kPa, which is significantly different (P < 0.05) from the stiffness of the control group of 4.70 ± 17.41 kPa. This was attributed to the degradation of elastin fibers and increment of collagen deposition in the vessel as observed in the histological analysis. The lesion heterogeneity was illustrated by the stiffness gradient from 40 kPa to 1.2 MPa within a 2µm2 region. We also examined the stiffness of the diabetic rat aorta as a potential biomarker for disease progression. Results have shown a significantly higher stiffness of 70.25 ± 14.10 kPa in diabetic rat aorta, compared with 54.19 ± 14.15 kPa in the control group. Lastly, we characterized the human aortic calcifications to fill the knowledge gap of scarce datasets for calcification stiffness. Results have demonstrated the calcification stiffness as 61.5 ± 35 kPa, which is significantly larger than the stiffness of the control group of 12.0 ± 4.4 kPa. The stiffness variation was attributed to the percentage of calcium deposits, observed from the histological analysis. These nanomechanical characterizations could be further used for a better understanding of arterial adaptation and to provide insights for effective vascular therapies.
