Computational Investigation Of An Improved Cowl Concept For Hypersonic Propulsive Nozzles, Mark C. Butler Jun 1994

Computational Investigation Of An Improved Cowl Concept For Hypersonic Propulsive Nozzles, Mark C. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of placing a gas generator into the cowl of a hypersonic nozzle/afterbody were investigated computationally. Gas generator mass flow and deflection angle effects were analyzed for two nozzle/cowl geometries; an experimentally validated nozzle/cowl configuration evaluated at off-design conditions and a generic hypersonic propulsive nozzle evaluated at more realistic on design conditions. A combination of Van Leer flux-vector splitting and Roe flux-difference splitting finite volume computational algorithms were used to solve the unsteady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations based on planar, laminar flow, perfect gas equation of state assumptions. For the low speed off-design cases analyzed, gas generator effects on nozzle …

Effects Of Thickness And Curvature On The Natural Frequencies Of Cylindrical Composite Shells, Jose L. Monteverde E. Jun 1994

Effects Of Thickness And Curvature On The Natural Frequencies Of Cylindrical Composite Shells, Jose L. Monteverde E.

Theses and Dissertations

An analytical study is performed to determine the dynamic response, natural frequencies and mode shapes, of deep composite cylindrical shells, including the effect of through the thickness shear strain. The DSHELL finite element program is used to predict the first four natural frequencies and the results are compared to a reference using the Galerkin technique. The program was extended to problems considering simply supported-free boundary conditions. As is well know, the free boundary is rather difficult to represent using the Galerkin technique approach. The mode shapes are created by plotting a surface-contour plot of the eigenvector output from DSHELL.

Noise Reduction For Speech Enhancement Using Non-Linear Wavelet Processing, Hassan Dehmani Jun 1994

Noise Reduction For Speech Enhancement Using Non-Linear Wavelet Processing, Hassan Dehmani

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of speech enhancement presents many obstacles in the speech processing field. This thesis develops several speech de-noising systems that can be used in the time, fourier, and wavelet domains. We present two thresholding techniques soft and hard. The application of these thresholding techniques to noisy speech data is discussed. The combination of both wavelets and the Fourier domains with noisy phase restoration proves to yield the best results in terms of intelligibility. Informal listening tests were conducted in order to compare the effects and differences between the speech de-noising systems.

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding Jun 1994

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding

Theses and Dissertations

A new spatio-temporal method for identifying 3D objects found in 2D image sequences is presented. The Hidden Markov Model technique is used as a spatio-temporal classification algorithm to identify 3D objects by the temporal changes in observed shape features. A new information theoretic argument is developed that proves identifying objects based on image sequences can lead to higher classification accuracies than single look methods. A new distance measure is proposed that analyzes the performance of Hidden Markov Models in a multi-class pattern recognition problem. A three class problem identifying moving light display objects provides experimental verification of the sequence processing …

Embedded Chaotic Time Series: Applications In Prediction And Spatio-Temporal Classification, James R. Stright Jun 1994

Embedded Chaotic Time Series: Applications In Prediction And Spatio-Temporal Classification, James R. Stright

Theses and Dissertations

The Deterministic Versus Stochastic algorithm developed by Martin Casdagli is modified to produce two new, methodologies, each of which selectively uses embedding space nearest neighbors. Neighbors which are considered prediction relevant are retained for local linear prediction, while those which are considered likely to represent noise are ignored. For many time series, it is shown possible to improve on local linear prediction with both of the new algorithms. Furthermore, the theory of embedology is applied to determine a length of test sequence sufficient for accurate classification of moving objects. Sequentially recorded feature vectors of a moving object form a training …

H2 Optimal Control With H∞, Μ, And L1 Constraints, David E. Walker Jun 1994

H2 Optimal Control With H∞, Μ, And L1 Constraints, David E. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

H2 optimization with convex constraints is considered. The optimal order-free solution is shown to be unique through convex analysis. H∞ constraints with feedforward terms and singular constraints are also allowed. The optimal fixed-order solution is shown to have the same characteristics as a mixed problem with regular H∞ constraints. Furthermore, these results are shown to hold for controller orders as low as the optimal H2 order. A numerical method is developed based on analytical gradients which results in sub- and super-optimal fixed-order controllers. The problem is extended to include an upper bound on a mu constraint …

Multirate Time-Frequency Distributions, John R. O'Hair May 1994

Multirate Time-Frequency Distributions, John R. O'Hair

Theses and Dissertations

Multirate systems, which find application in the design and analysis of filter banks, are demonstrated to also be useful as a computational paradigm. It is shown that any problem which can be expressed a set of vector-vector, matrix-vector or matrix-matrix operations can be recast using multirate. This means all of numerical linear algebra can be recast using multirate as the underlying computational paradigm. As a non-trivial example, the multirate computational paradigm is applied to the problem of Generalized Discrete Time- Frequency Distributions GDTFD to create a new family of fast algorithms. The first of this new class of distributions is …

Transient Body Force Effects On The Dryout And Rewet Of A Heated Capillary Structure, Michael K. Reagan

Theses and Dissertations

A transient, one-dimensional numerical code was developed to model the liquid flow in a non-uniformly heated, axial square groove. The groove was subjected to transient body forces up to approximately 0.51 m/s2 . Axial variation in meniscus levels, shear stress and heat transfer between the groove wall and the liquid, axial conduction through the liquid, evaporation and body forces were accounted for in the model. Dryout and rewet of the groove were allowed; the front location was determined using conservation of mass and linear extrapolation. A physical experiment was performed with a stainless steel plate into which eight square …

An Aerodynamic And Static-Stability Analysis Of The Hypersonic Applied Research Technology (Hart) Missile, Kenneth J. Moran Apr 1994

An Aerodynamic And Static-Stability Analysis Of The Hypersonic Applied Research Technology (Hart) Missile, Kenneth J. Moran

Theses and Dissertations

The flow about the complete Hypersonic Applied Research Technology (HART) missile is simulated for inviscid, laminar, and turbulent conditions and Mach numbers from 2 to 6. An explicit, second-order-accurate, flux-difference-splitting, algorithm is implemented and employed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. The formulation models turbulence with the zero-equation, Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model, accounting for pressure-gradient and compressibility effects. The equations are solved using a finite-volume methodology. In the first part of the study, numerical experiments are performed using an infinitely thin-fin approximation. The aerodynamic and static-stability characteristics are investigated to determine if conventional supersonic missile configurations can be flown at Mach numbers …

Resonance Capture In Unbalanced Dual-Spin Spacecraft, Raymond Tsui Mar 1994

Resonance Capture In Unbalanced Dual-Spin Spacecraft, Raymond Tsui

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the spinup dynamics of dual-spin spacecraft having an imbalanced rotor. Of particular interest is a phenomenon called 'resonance capture' during which the spinup motor torque induces uncontrolled growth of nutation. A captured spacecraft tumbles end-over-end, while an escaped spacecraft experiences little nutation growth. The conditions which lead to both state are analyzed. A set of criteria based on the spacecraft's kinetic energy at the of spinup is used to determine whether or not it has been captured. To calculate the final energies against which these criteria are compared, a set of nondimensional equations of motion are numerically …

Feasibility Analysis For Predicting A Kinetic Kill Zone For Aircraft Homing Missile Defense, Mark E. Ennis Mar 1994

Feasibility Analysis For Predicting A Kinetic Kill Zone For Aircraft Homing Missile Defense, Mark E. Ennis

Theses and Dissertations

An extended Kalman filter is used to predict a kinetic kill zone for use in aircraft self defense versus homing missiles. The analysis is limited to an in-the-plane analysis and focuses on finding the model parameters which have the largest impact on the predicted kill zone. No attempt is made to optimize the design of the filter model itself. The analysis computes the kill zone relative to an assumed aircraft trajectory using strictly filter computed statistics. No Monte-Carlo simulations are used throughout the thesis. The filter assumed to be on the evading aircraft, uses an onboard laser radar (ladar) to …

Application Of Sequential Quadratic Programming To Large-Scale Structural Design Problems, Mark A. Abramson Mar 1994

Application Of Sequential Quadratic Programming To Large-Scale Structural Design Problems, Mark A. Abramson

Theses and Dissertations

Large-scale structural optimization problems are often difficult to solve with reasonable efficiency and accuracy. Such problems are often characterized by constraint functions which are not explicitly defined. Constraint and gradient functions are usually expensive to evaluate. An optimization approach which uses the NLPQL sequential quadratic programming algorithm of Schittkowski, integrated with the Automated Structural Optimization System ASTROS is tested. The traditional solution approach involves the formulation and solution of an explicitly defined approximate problem during each iteration. This approach is replaced by a simpler approach in which the approximate problem is eliminated. In the simpler approach, each finite element analysis …

Assessing The Vulnerability Of Multi-Commodity Networks With Failing Components, Alan R. Robinson Mar 1994

Assessing The Vulnerability Of Multi-Commodity Networks With Failing Components, Alan R. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes an analytical approach for assessing flow disturbance, or compromise, based on limited sampling of arc flow information in multi-commodity, or multiple origin-destination O-D, networks with failing arcs. There were three objectives established for this research. The first objective was to bound the expected flow, given the arcs fail with certain probabilities, which was accomplished by reviewing current approaches for single-commodity networks and extending the results to the multi-commodity case. The second objective was to determine the best placement of flow monitors to obtain the most accurate estimates of O-D pair volumes. This was accomplished using a multi-criteria …

In addition, the metamodels were fit to the simulation data and …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Automating Satellite Range Scheduling, Donald A. Parish Mar 1994

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Automating Satellite Range Scheduling, Donald A. Parish

Theses and Dissertations

Satellite range scheduling involves scheduling satellite supports in which a satellite and a specific remote tracking station communicate with each other within a specified time window. As the number of satellite supports continue to increase, more pressure is placed on the current manual system to generate schedules efficiently. Previous research efforts focused on heuristic and mixed-integer programming approaches which may not produce the best results. The objective of this research was to determine if a genetic algorithm approach to automating the generation of 24 hour schedules was competitive with other methods. The goal was to schedule as many supports as …
