Changes In The Western Flank Of The North Atlantic Subtropical High Since 1140 Ce: Extremes, Drivers, And Hydroclimatic Patterns, Joshua C. Bregy, Justin T. Maxwell, Scott M. Robeson, Grant L. Harley, Valerie Trouet

Publications

Summer circulation and moisture patterns in the Southeast United States are controlled by the position of the North Atlantic subtropical high. In a warming climate, the subtropical high is projected to strengthen and expand west, but there remains uncertainty regarding its variability and linkages to natural drivers. Here, we use a tree-ring network across the Southeast United States to reconstruct the relative intensity of the pressure gradient across the subtropical high’s western flank over the past 870 years. Variations in the flank’s position and the pressure gradient have been a major driver of the hydroclimate—including creating a Southeast-Caribbean moisture dipole—since …

The Hidden Cost Of Using Time Series Aggregation For Modeling Low-Carbon Industrial Energy Systems: An Investors’ Perspective, Markus Fleschutz Feb 2025

The Hidden Cost Of Using Time Series Aggregation For Modeling Low-Carbon Industrial Energy Systems: An Investors’ Perspective, Markus Fleschutz

Publications

Time series aggregation (TSA) is commonly used in energy system optimization to reduce model complexity and computational expenses by selecting periods to represent the entire time series. TSA’s accuracy has traditionally been assessed by comparing the objective values between the original and TSA models (assumed error). However, evaluating TSA from an investor’s standpoint involves analyzing the performance of TSA-based energy system designs using the original time series. Therefore, we introduce the hidden error and total error, novel error metrics, to evaluate the financial implications of TSA through backtesting the TSA-based system designs using the original time series. Our analysis extends …

Considerations Of Undrained Behavior Of Compacted Clay Embankments Under Extreme Wetting-Drying Cycles, Ghada Ellithy, John F. Peters

Publications

Many geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, involve unsaturated soils or soils in thevadose zone. Undrained loading happens when the increase in driving forces occurs quicker thanthe ability of the soil to dissipate its pore-water pressure (PWP). During undrained loading forcompacted clay embankments, in which the material is typically unsaturated, it has beenestablished that the increase in shear strength caused by an increase in confining pressure is largerthan the reduction in shear strength due to a decrease in matric suction. This concept is not wellestablished in engineering practice because the conventional understanding is that the strength ofunsaturated soils is larger than …

Safe Data-Enabled Control Of Human-In-The-Loop Robotic Manipulator Systems, Ritirupa Dey, Avimanyu Sahoo, Vignesh Narayanan

Publications

Safe control of human-in-the-loop (HIL) robotic manipulators is critical for applications such as assistive robotics, teleoperation in hazardous environments, and collaborative manufacturing. However, this remains challenging due to the lack of a unified framework that simultaneously addresses safety constraints, external disturbances, unmodeled dynamics, and dynamic role switching in the HIL setting. In this paper, we propose a novel NN-driven HIL control framework in which human–robot dyadic interaction occurs through the haptic channel. Using Lyapunov stability analysis, we theoretically show that the proposed NN-based controller ensures accurate joint trajectory tracking, compensates for system uncertainties, and adapts to human inputs modeled as …

Predicting Chaotic Systems With Quantum Echo-State Networks, Erik Connerty, Ethan N. Evans, Gerasimos Angelatos, Vignesh Narayanan

Publications

Recent advancements in artificial neural networks have enabled impressive tasks on classical computers, but they demand significant computational resources. While quantum computing offers potential beyond classical systems, the advantages of quantum neural networks (QNNs) remain largely unexplored. In this work, we present and examine a quantum circuit (QC) that implements and aims to improve upon the classical echo-state network (ESN), a type of reservoir-based recurrent neural networks (RNNs), using quantum computers. Typically, ESNs consist of an extremely large reservoir that learns high-dimensional embeddings, enabling prediction of complex system trajectories. Quantum echo-state networks (QESNs) aim to reduce this need for prohibitively …

Surgical Suturing Skill Assessment Using Estimated Hand Roll Angle From A Deep-Learning Computer Vision Algorithm, Jianxin Gao, Amir Mehdi Shayan, Simar P. Singh, Joe Bible, Ravikiran Singapogu, Richard E. Groff

Publications

This paper proposes a deep-learning computer vision algorithm to estimate hand roll angles for metric-based assessment of surgical suturing skills. The number of rolls metric, previously calculated directly from IMU data, counts the number of hand roll reversals during a single suture. To calculate this metric using computer vision, we apply a deep-learning algorithm that can reliably estimate hand roll angles after training on suturing videos collected on the SutureCoach simulator. Results show that the estimation accuracy of the deep-learning algorithm is robust to different video backgrounds. The number of rolls metrics were used to analyze suturing performance in the …

Publications

Flying aircraft, whether at a general aviation, commercial, or military level, is deeply engrained in American culture. Opinion polls place being a professional pilot as one of the most respected, and prestigious jobs in the country (Mushtaque, 2023). As evidenced by the popularity of movies such as Airplane!, Top Gun, or Sully, flying is something that fascinates many people. Perhaps contributing to its mystique is the difficulty and expense in obtaining the necessary training and certifications to be a pilot. Some people undergo flight training with the goal of flying commercially, as an airline or corporate pilot, while others do …
