The Investigation Of Color Modification As A Result Of Solid Solution, Bobby Lee Mornin
The Investigation Of Color Modification As A Result Of Solid Solution, Bobby Lee Mornin
Masters Theses
"To the ceramic industry, color has long been one of its chief problems, not only in reproducing colors in the many complex silicate structures but in the development of stains that are stable at high temperatures and that are economically feasible for mass production. At the present time a stable high temperature red or yellow would be very desirable. Solid solution has been employed in ceramics to modify and thereby provide ceramic materials of different physical characteristics. The limited data available with respect to such solid solution serves to indicate that perhaps this state may serve as an important means …
A Study Of The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Stanley Francis Johnsen
A Study Of The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Stanley Francis Johnsen
Masters Theses
"Since scrapers were first employed in underground mining work, numerous changes in scraper design have transpired until now there are several common types of scrapers in use in mines over the world. The proved models of scrapers have been developed over a period of more than fifty years. Although specific scrapers have been tested to determine the amount of power consumed, no literature could be found concerning the relative power consumption of the different types of scrapers when operated under identical conditions. Purpose of Problem - The purpose of this study is to determine the relative efficiency of different types …
Interrelationship Of Transverse Anchorage And Adhesive Bond In Welded Wire Reinforcement, Alan Arthur Becker
Interrelationship Of Transverse Anchorage And Adhesive Bond In Welded Wire Reinforcement, Alan Arthur Becker
Masters Theses
"...Welded Wire Reinforcement Fabric has been applied only to certain "light types" of reinforced concrete construction. It has not as yet been applied as main tension reinforcement for most concrete structures, mainly due to the fact that a thorough investigation of the potentialities and possibilities of welded wire fabric has not as yet been conducted. It is expected that the data collected in this investigation coupled with data collected in similar investigations performed at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy will furnish the basis for a structural and economic comparison between welded wire fabric and ordinary reinforcing bars. The …

It is also valuable and practical for the author since it follows his general course of undergraduate study and since it fits closely into the field for which he is preparing himself...The requirement with which the author is most concerned is the design system for the producing of …
A Graphic Method For Determining Pressure Losses Due To Air Friction In Mine Airways, Robert F. Bruzewski
A Graphic Method For Determining Pressure Losses Due To Air Friction In Mine Airways, Robert F. Bruzewski
Masters Theses
"One of the most important factors that influence the selection of a fan or blower for circulating a desired quantity of air through mine workings is the total pressure that is required to overcome the resistance of the airways. Ordinarily, the major portion of this resistance is that caused by friction of the moving air on the surface of the airways. The pressure that is required to overcome this frictional resistance is calculated by means of the friction formula"--Introduction, page 1.
Analytical Investigation Of Thin And Moderately Thick-Walled Tubing Under Peripheral And Biaxial Loading, Frank Joseph Cizek
Analytical Investigation Of Thin And Moderately Thick-Walled Tubing Under Peripheral And Biaxial Loading, Frank Joseph Cizek
Masters Theses
"The problem then, resolves itself into a study of the behavior of thin-walled and moderately thick-walled cylinders under the effects of an external fluid pressure acting alone, or the effects of an external fluid pressure acting simultaneously with an axial loading. In this thesis a theoretical or analytical approach will be used. Some application and reference will be made to oil-well casings in particular, but the solutions will not be restricted to oil-well casing alone. it must be recognized that the tubing problem involves the problem of unstability before the proportional limit of the metal is exceeded and a similar …

An Investigation Of The Weavability Of Wire With Observations On The Defects Of Wire And Wire Cloth, Walston Chubb
Masters Theses
"In the course of this year's work under the auspices of the Ludlow-Saylor research fellowship many problems of interest to the wire weaving industry have been investigated. Some of these problems have no academic novelty; others were not completed and have been laid aside for future investigations. The major problem for investigation this year was to discover a method by which the weavability of wire might be evaluated. A second problem for investigation was to discover the causes of some of the defects of wire and wire cloth. In addition to presenting the results of these investigations, this thesis represents …

The second section is that of studying and explaining characteristics of the resulting curves. Correlation of the data obtained will be necessary in order to obtain the curves. In order that the first section of the problem could be solved it was necessary to establish a standard of cleanliness for the apparatus used. Establishment of procedures for the operations and cleaning of the apparatus was necessary. Before Kenneth E. Rudert began his design and construction …
Effect Of Transition Elements On The Transmittance Of B₂O₃ Glasses, Chandubhai Gordhanbhai Amin
Effect Of Transition Elements On The Transmittance Of B₂O₃ Glasses, Chandubhai Gordhanbhai Amin
Masters Theses
"For many years, boric oxide has been used extensively as a minor constituents in silicate glasses, because of its beneficial influence on their physical properties as well as on glass melting processes; but when used without silica or in too large proportion, the resulting glasses lack chemical durability...Because of its detrimental effect as a major constituent in silicate glasses or in borate glasses, very little work has been done on borate glasses, especially on colored borate glasses...The purpose of this investigation is to find out the effect of the transition elements on the transmission curves of the colored borate glasses"--Introduction, …
Preparation Of Copper Single Crystals By Means Of Powder Metallurgy Methods, Wei-Kung Chang
Preparation Of Copper Single Crystals By Means Of Powder Metallurgy Methods, Wei-Kung Chang
Masters Theses
"Since different mechanical properties of metals result from different grain size became known, the metallurgists have been interested in finding out the true nature of the grain boundaries. Consequently, several different theories concerning the mechanism of recrystallization, grain growth, and the structure of metals were advanced and studied. These threw much light on the difference of properties between polycrystalline metals and single crystals of the same metals. The single crystals of metals were studied because they enabled the investigator to determine the important points of metallic behavior. The first work on single crystals was rather obscure and limited to isolated, …

A Correlation Of Formulas For The Flow Of Fluids In Pipes, John Gorman Duba
Masters Theses
"At present there exist two quite distinct fields in fluid flow in pipes, the one in water supply and the other in the petroleum industry. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the various pipeline flow formulas as used in both fields and to correlate the exponential type formula which is much used in practice with the Nikuradse curves obtained in the laboratory"--A Brief Historical Review, page 5.
Evaluation Of Quenching Media Using The End-Quench Hardenability Test, Subodh C. Das Gupta
Evaluation Of Quenching Media Using The End-Quench Hardenability Test, Subodh C. Das Gupta
Masters Theses
"The purpose of the thesis was to evaluate the quenching speed of different quenching media by studying their behaviour in relation to hardenabilities of steels, using the standard A.S.T.M. End-quench Test. At the outset an understanding of the term "Hardenability", so extensively used in industrial heat-treatment, is necessary, The property of a steel, of hardening on quenching to various depths beneath the surface is referred to as the 'Hardenability". It may simply be called the "susceptibility to hardening". Hardenability should be distinguished from the "Hardening capacity", which represents the magnitude of the hardness achieved. The chief factors which affect the …
The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To The Design Of A Continuous Beam Over Three Supports, Robert F. Davidson
The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To The Design Of A Continuous Beam Over Three Supports, Robert F. Davidson
Masters Theses
"The theory of Limit Design is the application of the theory of Plasticity to the estimation of the actual carrying capacity of a structure. In this theory, as it is applied to statistically indeterminate structures, the areas of most unfavorable stress are allowed to be stressed beyond the yield point and into the plastic range of stress. It was formerly held that, by assuming elastic behavior, all questions of strength of materials that concern the Structural Engineer were capable of solution. However, it is now becoming recognized, from actual measurements of deformations of structures and from tests carried to near …
An Investigation Of The Production Of Multicarbide Of Tungsten And Titanium From Wo₃ - Tih₂ - C Mixtures, Chi-Mei Hsiao
An Investigation Of The Production Of Multicarbide Of Tungsten And Titanium From Wo₃ - Tih₂ - C Mixtures, Chi-Mei Hsiao
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this research was to investigate the possibility of producing the multicarbides of tungsten and titanium from a tungsten oxide-titanium hydride-carbon mixture. It appears to be worthwhile to carry out the reduction, carburization, and pre-alloying in one process, i.e. reducing tungsten oxide with the dissociated hydrogen from titanium hydride and the added carbon; then carburizing the reduced tungsten metal and dissociated titanium metal; at last, pre-alloying the mixture of TiC and WC. The replacement of titanium hydride with titanium oxide seems to be more direct, simple, and economical process; but the difficulty in the reduction of titanium oxide …
Reduction Of Zinc Sulphide In A Vacuum, Tien-Shih Liu
Reduction Of Zinc Sulphide In A Vacuum, Tien-Shih Liu
Masters Theses
"The successful large scale commercial application of high vacuum for high temperature metallurgical operations is a comparatively new development. The use of Pidgeon and the carbothermic processes for the production of magnesium during the war forced a perfection of both equipments and techniques for high vacuum operations. This opens broadly the way for a great expansion of vacuum metallurgy. Vacuum operation is thus no more a laboratory method - it is a kind of industrial practice. Many metallurgical operations, which cannot be carried out by ordinary processes, are made feasible when conducted in a reduced pressure. typical examples are the …

The initial problem is to extend the shore-based fabrication and reduce the offshore construction, foul weather delays, …
The Effects Of Moisture In Grog Upon Dry Pressed Mixes Containing Grog, Charles L. Mckinnis
The Effects Of Moisture In Grog Upon Dry Pressed Mixes Containing Grog, Charles L. Mckinnis
Masters Theses
"It has been found that the aging of clay-grog-water mixes before pressing proves to be quite beneficial. The purpose of the aging period is to allow the added water to disseminate throughout the mixture of clay (plastic) and grog (non-plastic) in an effort to bring about the best bonding action possible. The clay-grog-water mixture, if not aged, is of a sticky consistency; while, if the same mixture is aged for twenty-four (24) hours, it is readily workable. This process of aging has long been recognized as a "must" in the Ceramic Industry in obtaining mixtures of ideal workability"--Introduction, page 2.
Analysis Of Simultaneous Faults By The Method Of Symmetrical Components, Robert Marshall Montgomery
Analysis Of Simultaneous Faults By The Method Of Symmetrical Components, Robert Marshall Montgomery
Masters Theses
"The object of this thesis is to present a method for the analytic determination of fault currents and voltages of a symmetrical three-phase system that is subjected to three simultaneous faults. The fault analysis is to be effected by the method of symmetrical components...Though relatively infrequent, simultaneous faults are important because relay systems, operating satisfactorily for single faults, may fail to isolate simultaneous faults. Therefore, it seems worthwhile to have in convenient form a method for calculating short-circuit currents and voltages caused by faults occurring at the same time at three separate and distinct points of a system. It is …

A Study Of The Separation Of Wolframite From Tin-Oxide, Chih-Wen Ying
A Study Of The Separation Of Wolframite From Tin-Oxide, Chih-Wen Ying
Masters Theses
"A number of mines in china, Bolivia, England, and other countries contain both tin-oxide and wolframite. Owing to the fact that the specific gravity of tin-oxide and wolframite is so nearly the same, considerable difficulty is experienced in making a gravity separation, and all attempts to do so by wet or dry concentration have given very poor results. The perfection of magnetic separators has done much to mitigate this difficulty, so that now complex ores of this nature can be treated in a satisfactory manner. The mixed concentrate from the tables or other concentrators, after being roasted to expel sulfur …

Compare the performances of steel and tungsten carbide bits in limestone and in granite"--Introduction, page 1.
A Test Method For Measuring The Flow In Refractory Materials At High Temperatures, Christen Knudsen
A Test Method For Measuring The Flow In Refractory Materials At High Temperatures, Christen Knudsen
Masters Theses
"One of the most important properties of refractory materials is the ability to resist stress which may either be directly applied or originate in the material. The factors which govern the resistance to stress include the modulus of elasticity, the ultimate strength under different types of stress, and the "flow" characteristics which become of importance when the material is stressed at the temperature at which plasticity is developed. Systematic determinations of the mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and ultimate or breaking stress is rather difficult or more or less impossible to carry out at the temperature at which …
Synthesis Involving Waste Carbon Dioxide, Glenn Eldon Brand
Synthesis Involving Waste Carbon Dioxide, Glenn Eldon Brand
Masters Theses
"Many industries, ranging from power plants to breweries, produce large quantities of carbon dioxide as a by-product. The burning of limestone with natural gas produces a relatively clean gas in which the carbon dioxide content may exceed 40 per cent. It is with this type gas that the present thesis will be concerned. In this process the burning of the limestone is accomplished by using natural gas as a fuel, burning usually under a pressure of about two pounds, and obtaining carbon dioxide from the combustion of the gas and the decomposition of the limestone. Such a plant producing 70 …

Masters Theses
"Less-than-car-load (L.C.L.) freight has been and is becoming more of an acute problem with the railroads of this country. They are rapidly losing this vital and important function of their transportation service. Following, is a brief history of the railroads along with a discussion of their present day problems dealing with less-than-car-load freight service. It is believed, by the author, that a system of developing and using containers and container cars along with a pick up and delivery service will solve these problems the railroads now experience. If this method of freight transport would be adopted by the railroads, not …
Design Of A Radio Broadcasting Station, John William Hamman
Design Of A Radio Broadcasting Station, John William Hamman
Masters Theses
"In the design of any piece of equipment, before any work whatsoever is done, a reason for developing the object must be apparent to all concerned. Any expenditure of time, labor and money must be properly justified before action can be taken. In the case of this paper, then, the reason for designing a broadcast radio station for the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy at Rolla, Missouri is twofold: First, to provide an additional instrument whereby instruction may be given to students interested in the study of radio; second, to supply the residents of Rolla and vicinity with entertainment …
