Magnetic Properties Of Ceramic Ferrites Developed For Use In Fractional Horse Power A.C. Motors, Ram Saran Bhatia

Masters Theses

"The ceramic material produced in the Ceramic Engineering Department of the University of Missouri-Rolla has been tested to determine its magnetic properties. First the B-H characteristic, Q-factor and initial permeability were measured at different frequencies and the relative-loss factor was determined from the above results. The samples prepared were in the shape of toroids of approximately 8.0 cm of mean length and were wound with standard insulated number 38 wire. The soft ferrite material was produced to determine whether or not it could be used in the design of fractional H.P. a.c. motors"--Abstract, page ii.

The Influence Of Temperature, Carbon Content, And Preloading On Secondary Consolidation Of A Clay, Richard Kai-Ming So

Masters Theses

"The effect of temperature, organic carbon content, and preloading on secondary consolidation of Bryce clay has been studied. A straight line plot of void ratio versus logarithm of time was established in secondary consolidation for long term loading periods up to one month. Temperature changes within the range of 5ºC. to 45ºC. were studied in the secondary consolidation phase at different stress levels and different carbon contents of the soil. Secondary consolidation in a preloading cycle at a stress level of 2 tsf unloaded to 1 tsf and reloaded to 2 tsf was studied. The preloading tests were at temperatures …

Intrinsic Viscosities Of Linear Polyethylene, Joseph Shing Chiang Jan 1971

Intrinsic Viscosities Of Linear Polyethylene, Joseph Shing Chiang

Masters Theses

"Intrinsic viscosity measurements were performed on linear polyethylene (Marlex 6009) in decalin at 135ºC and in diphenyl ether at 163.9ºC. Molecular weights ranging from 3x10³ to 35x10⁴ were studied. It was found that for linear polyethylene of molecular weight up to 35x10⁴, the tedious intrinsic viscosity measurement could be replaced by inherent viscosity measurement at a concentration of 0.1 grams per deciliter. The effect of shear on viscosities measured in decalin increased as the molecular weight of the sample increased. The shear rate effects on intrinsic viscosities were negligible. On the other hand, the shear rate effect on the Huggins' …

The Influence Of Member Length On Thermal Contact Resistance In A Vacuum Environment, Larry Martin Cooper Jan 1971

The Influence Of Member Length On Thermal Contact Resistance In A Vacuum Environment, Larry Martin Cooper

Masters Theses

"An investigation was conducted to determine the influence of member length on thermal contact resistance in a vacuum environment. A model was created which consisted of a center rod axially loaded between two other members. It was assumed that circular macroscopic constriction areas were formed at the contact interface when the rods were loaded. Macroscopic modeling of the contact surfaces makes the thermal contact analysis a function of the mechanical and thermal boundary conditions of the total body. The method of finite differences was employed to calculate the temperature distribution, heat flows, and thermal contact resistance of each member. Data …

"The bounded input-bounded output stability is investigated for networks containing uniformly distributed LRGC, LRC, GRC and G(ω)RC elements. The region of stability in the W plane (W = e to the power of the square root of (s² + bs + c), Θ plane (Θ = the square root of (s² + bs + c), and S plane (S = s²+bs+c) is found in each case so that if the poles of a transfer function rational in W, Θ or S lie within this region the system is stable. After obtaining a desired transfer function rational in W = e …

Design And Preliminary Testing Of A Thermomechanical Rock Fragmentation Apparatus, Gary Earl Fenton Jan 1971

Design And Preliminary Testing Of A Thermomechanical Rock Fragmentation Apparatus, Gary Earl Fenton

Masters Theses

"The design characteristics of equipment to thermally weaken and mechanically fragment hard rock were developed and the apparatus constructed. An initial investigation of thermo-mechanical fragmentation was conducted on Missouri red granite. The particles from the fragmentation tests were sized and this analysis was used in the Rittinger theory to calculate surface area breakage energy. It was found that the application of thermal energy could reduce the surface area breakage energy per unit volume of material removed by as much as 41 percent. The use of kerfs in the rock increased the amount of material removed and permitted larger particles to …

A Study Of The Dislocation Instability And Reverse Martensitic Transformation In Fe-Ni System, Chung Lim Jan 1971

A Study Of The Dislocation Instability And Reverse Martensitic Transformation In Fe-Ni System, Chung Lim

Masters Theses

"Since the martensitic reaction is a strain transformation, the transformation of the lattice structure can be induced by an external stresses. This also means that the macroscopic total elastic constant should decrease as the temperature is lowered to Ms on cooling. For the reverse transformation an anomalous decrease of the elastic constant is to be expected as the temperature increases to As on heating. In this experiment measurements of the velocity change of an ultrasonic wave in Fe-Ni alloys were carried out for the reverse martensitic transformation. The deviation from the linear relationship of the velocity change as …

The Pm3m-Fm3m Transformation And Phase Equilibrium In Solid Solutions Of Csc1 With Kc1, Rbc1, And Csbr, John David Weyand

Masters Theses

"Thermal expansion and the Pm3m t Fm3m transition of cesium chloride have been studied with high temperature diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and heating and quenching techniques. The onset temperature of the transition in pure CsCl, on heating, is 471ºC. There are no observable premonitory effects below the transition temperature and no apparent structural relationships between the polymorphs is apparent. Both phases coexist over a 20º to 50ºC temperature range and equilibrium thermal hysteresis occurs on heating and cooling. Hysteresis behavior is explained by addition of strain energy parameters to the free energy function. Initiation of the Pm3m t Fm3m transformation …

A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane - Nitrogen - Helium System, Promod Kumar Taneja Jan 1971

A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane - Nitrogen - Helium System, Promod Kumar Taneja

Masters Theses

"The volumetric data for methane, nitrogen, and helium mixtures have been determined experimentally at low temperatures (60ºF to -30ºF) over a pressure range of 1000 to 5000 psig. An attempt has been made to show that the extension of standard techniques viz, "The Law of Corresponding States" for predicting the compressibility factors of pure hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures is not adequate for mixtures containing even very small amounts of helium. The deviation from the computed compressibility factors is found to be maximum at low temperatures and high pressures (up to 22%) for the mixtures studied"--Abstract, page ii.

Evaluation Of A Cation Isotopic Substitution Technique In Conjunction With A High Temperature Gas Pycnometer For Determining The Stoichiometry Of Materials, Michael Clair Graves Jan 1971

Evaluation Of A Cation Isotopic Substitution Technique In Conjunction With A High Temperature Gas Pycnometer For Determining The Stoichiometry Of Materials, Michael Clair Graves

Masters Theses

"This study was concerned with the evaluation of a high temperature gas pycnometer, used in conjunction with a cation isotopic substitution technique, for determining the stoichiometry of materials. Three methods were investigated for determining the correction factors for the thermal gradient effects in the gas pycnometer. The correction factors were shown to be dependent on the temperature, the sample volume, and the height of the sample in the sample chamber. Under the conditions of these experiments, the correction factors were shown to be essentially independent of sample grain size and pycnometer atmosphere. The determination of the stoichiometry of cadmium oxide …

To accomplish this objective, chemically-treated activated sludge or a mixture of the secondary sludge with primary sludge were thickened and dewatered by vacuum filtration and centrifugation. The putrescibility of the dewatered secondary sludge was also evaluated, and since anaerobic digestion is the usual method of sludge treatment, a digestion study was conducted. Secondary sludge for these studies was produced in five 38-gpd (144-1/day) activated sludge pilot plants operated at the Rolla Southeast Treatment Plant. Ferric chloride and alum were added directly …

The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch Jan 1971

The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch

Masters Theses

"Present comprehensive planning endeavors lack a consistent methodology which will produce realistic, useable results. The validity of this statement should be obvious after one has read Miller's "Evaluation of City and Region Planning Techniques." This paper contains a methodology, "The Integrated Planning Method," which will go a long way toward correcting this gross inadequacy that planners presently encounter in directing planning efforts. Two government developed planning and analysis procedures that, up until this time have been applied almost exclusively to hardware systems, have been combined into one integrated planning methodology that will provide not only meaningful and rigorous definition and …
