An Application Of Infrared Spectroscopy To The Study Of Binder Migration In Paper Coatings, Fred E. Huang

Multiple internal reflectance (MIR) was used to study binder migration of paper coatings. Casein and an acrylic latex were selected as binders because of their characteristic infrared absorption bands. The coatings analyzed were prepared on the Western Michigan University Pilot Coater using the airknife coating method at different coating speeds. A surface grinder was used to obtain several layers of coating for surface studies.

It was concluded that the MIR technique could satisfactorily be used in the binder migration studies. Its success mainly depends on the precision of surface grinding, caliper measurement and infrared characteristics of the binders. The results …

The objectives of the study were to construct and instrument a 15 ft - 15 ft (4.6 m- 4.6 m) two-span, composite design, laboratory structure, to subject the structure to thermal loading, and to correlate the experimental temperature distributions, strain distributions, and deflections with those obtained from the theoretical study. "The vertical pullout resistance of buried anchors subjected to dynamic loading was investigated by means of a laboratory model study. A dry uniformly graded sand, compacted by vibration to 92% of its relative density, was used as the test medium. Tests were performed in a 24-inch square tank using 3.0 and 5.0-inch diameter half and full-anchors. The anchors were tested at depths ranging from 5.0 to 21.0 inches.

Liquid solutions of known composition are prepared in a test cell by volumetric metering of degassed liquids. The operation of the apparatus is feasible over a wide range of temperature and pressure, producing data with an estimated probable error of ± 0.05 percent. Experimental P-X data for a system of C₄ hydrocarbons (1-Butene, Isobutane, and 1,3- Butadiene) are reported from 40-160 degrees Fahrenheit. Finite aspect ratio performance of both airfoils equipped with 30 percent chord flaps was studied to predict possible performance gains for general aviation aircraft available from the GA(W)-1 section.
