Simple Synchronous Detector For Spectroscopic Studies, Mokhtar Mofidi, M. Keith Hudson, Reagan Cole, James D. Wilson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Lock-in-amplifiers are used in many applications for signal processing and offer the ability to discriminate high levels of noise. While these instruments are very powerful and offer many features, they are not portable and are expensive. An economical and easy to use alternative circuit is presented which incorporates pre-amplification, reference, and synchronous detection on one circuit board. The design can be used in laboratory or process control situations where its small size and low cost are advantageous. The circuit was successfully applied to moderate and high level signals as seen in flame infrared emission detection and in a portable radiometer …

Radiometer For The Investigation Of Infrared Emissions From Flames And Rocket Plumes, Kathy Underhill, M. Keith Hudson, Jason Willis, Mokhtar Mofidi, Matthew J. Russo
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A prototypical radiometer using standard one inch interference filters and a lead selenide detector was constructed for use in flame and rocket plume studies. This radiometer was designed to employ a 600 Hz chopper and chopper frequency/phase reference circuit for signal processing. Bandpass filters centered for either 2.7 mum or 4.45 mum were placed in the optical path. The passed carbon dioxide or water vapor band energy irradiated the lead selenide detector, resulting in an output voltage. This signal was then fed into a dedicated synchronous detector. The signal was then recorded by a computer system equipped with an analog-to-digital …

Principles And Clinical Applications Of Magnetic Resonance, Rao P. Gullapalli, Teresa T. Evans, Roger M. Hawk
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A review is presented which covers the basic theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with regard to angular momentum, magnetic moments, and the classical mechanical description of the NMR experiment. Longitudinal (T,) and Transverse (T2) relaxation times are defined as well as the basic pulse sequences used for their measurement. In particular, the 180°-t-90° and the Hahn Spin Echo pulse sequences are described in detail. Basic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) theory is discussed with regard to slice selection, frequency encoding, and phase encoding to define the imaged volume element. The equations defining the amount of Tt , T2 , and …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Several definitions of the term "engineer" are presented, discussed, and contrasted with the term "scientist". These definitions demonstrate the fundamental differences between engineers and scientists and their professions The engineering method is compared with the scientific method and the value of each is discussed. Several aspects of engineering education are covered. The need for more liberally educated engineers is emphasized and the impact of computers on engineering education and the engineering profession is discussed. The value of a good science foundation in an undergraduate engineering program is also stressed. An engineering education is only as good as the engineering educators …

Integrated Circuits Interconnect Metallization For The Submicron Age, Kamesh V. Gadepally, Roger M. Hawk
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The interconnect metallization being used by the semiconductor industry has been aluminum or aluminum silicon. Aluminum silicon is being replaced by aluminum copper and aluminum copper silicon, due to its superior resistance to electromigration and hillock growth. This paper discusses the implementation of aluminum copper/silicon alloys in semiconductor processing, along with a review of the problems and advantages of the same.

Versatile Potentiostat With Optional Computer Control, Gary L. Fuller, William A. Russell Jr., Roger M. Hawk, James D. Wilson, P. D. Bratton
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A versatile potentiostat which can supply a maximum of 125 ma is described. The potentiostat uses readily available electronic components and an interface is detailed which allows the potentiostat optional computer control.
Computer-Controlled Programmable Pulse Generator For A Jeol Jnm-Ft-1a Radio Frequency Amplifier Section Of A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, William H. Russell, Roger M. Hawk
Computer-Controlled Programmable Pulse Generator For A Jeol Jnm-Ft-1a Radio Frequency Amplifier Section Of A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, William H. Russell, Roger M. Hawk
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A microprocessor controlled programmable pulse generator was specifically designed to interface with the JEOL JNM-FT-1 A Radio Frequency (RF) section of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. The programmable pulse generator was programmed and controlled by an IBM compatible computer. Statis rams were utilized as the programmable pulse generator's on board memory which were used to store the pulse sequences. Pulse widths can be programmed from 0.2 microseconds to 14.3 minutes. The JEOL RF section is unique in that it allows the pulse generator to control the phase of the RF transmitted to the NMR probe and whether the sample …
Image Processing Instrumentation For Giardia Lamblia Detection, Cy R. Tamanaha, Mark A. Gross
Image Processing Instrumentation For Giardia Lamblia Detection, Cy R. Tamanaha, Mark A. Gross
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Currently, the identification and enumeration of Giardia Iamblia cysts are based upon microscopic methods requiring individuals proficient in this area. It is a tedious process which consumes time that could be constructively used elsewhere. This project attempts to alleviate that burden by employing a computer to automatically process Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) prepared slides using digital image processing techniques. A computer controlled frame grabber, in conjunction with a CCD TV camera mounted on the epi-fluorescence microscope phototube, captures the light intensities of the objects in view under the microscope objective. The captured image is stored as pixels, with each pixel …

Construction And Software Design For A Microcomputer Controlled Ph/Ion Titrator, Edmond W. Wilson Jr., Dennis K. Thompson, James E. Mackey
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The construction of an automated titration device is described. The major components include an Apple II+ Microcomputer and 8-bit parallel interface. Fisher Accumet, Model 520 Digital pH/lon Meter, Gilmont Micrometer Buret of 2.5 mL capacity, Sigma stepper motor, power supply and driver to operate the buret, and a constant temperature bath of ± 0.005 °C stability. The limitations of the system are 0.001 pH/0.1 mv for the pH/ion sensing system, and 0.125 μL per step for the buret. The system as described is designed to determine equilibrium constants for metal ion-amino acid complexes. By changing the software a variety of …
