Viscous Flow Fields Induced By A Breaking Solitary Wave Over A Shelf, Ching-Jer Huang, Yen-Tsen Lin, Chun-Yuan Lin
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This work investigates the viscous flow fields induced by a solitary wave passing over a shelf or a step. The proposed numerical model solves the unsteady two-dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the turbulence equations. The finite-analytical scheme is used to discretize the differential equations involved in the RANS model. The particle level set method is adopted to capture the complex free surface evolution. Accuracy of the proposed model in simulating breaking solitary wave on a shelf is verified by comparing numerical wave profiles from the incident stage to the beginning of jet fall with the experimental data. Following …
Variations Of Statistics For Random Waves Propagating Over A Bar, Yu-Xiang Ma, Xiao-Zhou Ma, Guo-Hai Dong
Variations Of Statistics For Random Waves Propagating Over A Bar, Yu-Xiang Ma, Xiao-Zhou Ma, Guo-Hai Dong
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A series of physical experiments were conducted on the variations of statistics (skewness, kurtosis, groupiness) in random waves propagating over a submerged symmetrical bar. Random waves were generated using JONSWAP spectra while varying initial spectral width, wave height and peak frequency. It was found that the initial spectral width has a negligible effect on the variations of these statistical parameters. An abrupt change in wave groupiness is caused by wave breaking. Variations in the skewness and kurtosis mainly depend on the local water depth and wave height and period. Furthermore, the relationship between the skewness and kurtosis in the shoaling …

Comparison Between Consistent Coupled-Mode System And Eigenfunction Matching Method For Solving Water Wave Scattering, Chia-Cheng Tsai, Wan-Rong Chou
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Both the consistent coupled-mode system (CCMS) and the eigenfunction matching method (EMM) are well-known models for simulating the propagation of small-amplitude water waves over variable bathymetry. In this study, a thorough comparison is performed through numerical experiments. For the CCMS, a bottom-sloping mode is coupled in the mildslope equation with evanescent modes, then the CCMS are discretized by the finite-element method with high-order shape functions. For the EMM, the bottom profile is approximated in terms of successive flat shelves separated by abrupt steps, and then eigensolutions on the shelves are matched by the conservation of mass and momentum. To perform …

Statistical Analysis On The Long-Term Observations Of Typhoon Waves In The Taiwan Sea, Dong-Jiing Doong, Cheng-Han Tsai, Ying-Chih Chen, Jen-Ping Peng, Ching-Jer Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Seventeen data buoys were deployed in the Taiwan Sea since 1997. These buoys have made measurement for more than 100 typhoons. The purpose of this paper is to study the statistical characteristics of the observed typhoon waves. High resolution directional wave spectra are obtained by analyzing the buoy data. The Significant Typhoon Wave Height (SWTH) and the Duration of Large Waves (DLW) are proposed to indicate the sea severity of typhoons. The joint effect of the SWTH and the DLW is used to assess possible impact by the typhoon waves to the coast, using the damage curve calibrated from historical …

Discussions On The Occurrence Probabilities Of Observed Freak Waves, Aifeng Tao, Ji Peng, Jinhai Zheng, Yao Wang, Yuqing Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Field observational is the most direct and reliable research approach to investigate the freak waves, particularly for the occurrence probability. In order to present the latest research state, the results related to the observed freak waves from six sea areas are summarized and analyzed with comparisons. Three key conclusions are addressed. Firstly, both the occurrence probability and the strength of freak waves vary much for different sea areas. It is shown that there is still no answer to the big question of whether freak waves are rare events. Secondly, there is no single accepted, unified definition of freak waves. It …

Motion Vector Prediction Using Reselection Among Candidate Set, S. T. Uou, Eric Y. T. Juan, Jim Z. C. Lai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
For video coding standards with high compression ratio and good image quality, prediction is an essential step. If the prediction is more accurate, then lower bit-rate will be achieved. In this paper, a method is proposed to improve the coding efficiency for motion vectors using predicted motion vector candidate set (PMVCS). PMVCS consists of the motion vectors of blocks, which are the spatial and temporal neighbors of an encoding block. Using the proposed method, a better predicted motion vector can be obtained, which will result in fewer bits allocated for motion vectors. Compared with JIM18.4, the proposed method can reduce …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, we conducted a series of numerical experiments to find the most suitable maximum wind speed radii for the parameterized typhoon model. Different maximum wind speed radius equations were used to generate different wind fields, which were then input into the MIKE21 Spectral Wave (SW) model. The wave height results from the MIKE21 SW model were compared with the measured results, and rootmean-square error (RMSE) analysis was conducted to find a good maximum wind speed radius equation for use as the basis for wind field generation in the future. The RMSEs were then scored according to this order. …

The Design Of A Hull Form With The Minimum Total Resistance, Bao-Ji Zhang, Ai-Qin Miao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In order to obtain a hull form which exhibits low resistance and highly-efficient energy-saving performance, the overall resistance should be calculated as the sum of wave-making and viscous resistance, in which the total resistance corresponds to the objective function whereas the hull geometry parameters correspond to design variables. Apart from considering the limited conditions due to appropriate displacement, we further ponder over the boundary-layer viscous separation caused by additional constraints. We then proceed to apply the Nonlinear Programming Method (NLP) to determine the hull form with the minimum total resistance. This paper aims to optimize the streamlined design of the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The adoption of a direct forcing immersed boundary numerical method on the uniform flow, at a moderate Reynolds number of 100, past a pair of two rotating circular cylinders placed side-by-side, is the core of the present study. A simplified yet novel approach is used to impose a virtual force as a source to the full incompressible two-dimensional NavierStokes equations, which are discretized by the finite volume method. The usage of a Cartesian grid that ensures minimal computational cost, is the salient feature of the applied immersed boundary approach. The gap between the two cylinders, and their rotational direction and …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Ion transport through a hydrated cement system often becomes a principal factor to degrade concrete in a chlorideladen environments. Based on the transport mechanism of chloride ion, an analytical solution of mathematical model for predicting chloride penetration into concrete structures was herein derived. The model consists of both the diffusion of chloride due to concentration gradient and the convection of chloride due to moisture transport. The model also depends on temperature, age, relative humidity, and chloride binding. Based on both the diffusion coefficient and the mean velocity with time/depth dependence, an analytical solution of the mathematical model developed by previous …

A Sequential Multiple Packet Transmission Policy For Model-Based Networked Control Systems, Sheng-Hsiung Yang, Jenq-Lang Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper considers the stabilization of discrete-time modelbased networked control systems under a sequential multiple packet transmission policy. The dynamics of considered modelbased sequential multiple packet transmission NCSs are modeled as switched control systems. A sufficient condition for the existence of stabilizing controllers is derived by the switched Lyapunov function approach. Stabilizing networked feedback controllers can be obtained by solving linear matrix inequalities and equalities. A numerical example is proposed for verification.
