Novel Fault Diagnosis Method Based On Chaos Eyes And Extension Neural Network For Wind Power Systems, Meng-Hui Wang, Pi-Chu Wu Aug 2016

Novel Fault Diagnosis Method Based On Chaos Eyes And Extension Neural Network For Wind Power Systems, Meng-Hui Wang, Pi-Chu Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper proposes a novel approach based on the chaos eye method (CEM) and extension neural network (ENN) for fault diagnosis of wind power systems. First, we used sensors to capture the vibration signals of the wind power system to detect subtle changes. Subsequently, the chaotic synchronization detection method was used to form a chaos error distribution diagram. The distribution diagram centroid, called chaos eye in this paper, was used as the fault diagnosis feature to reduce the number of extracted features. This reduction in diagnostic features enables considerably reducing the computation time and cost of hardware implementation. The ENN-based …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Conventional methods for inspecting submarine pipelines under certain complex conditions are inadequate. A new method for inspecting the status of submarine pipeline based on a Multi-beam Bathymetric System (MBS) that can function under these conditions is proposed to resolve these shortfalls. Dual sonar sensors are employed in this method and the optimization of system parameters is undertaken to allow inspection of the submarine pipeline status in real-time at the Shengli Oil Field in Dongying, Shandong Province. The inspection results are presented in both two- and three-dimensions. Compared with the traditional MBS with a single sonar sensor, our tests indicate that …

Monocular Image-Based Local Collision-Free Path Planning For Autonomous Robots, I-Hsum Li, Ming-Chang Chen, Wei-Yen Wang, Shun-Feng Su, Yi-Han Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Monocular image-based local collision-free path planning for autonomous robots is presented in this paper. According to a pre-set pair of parallel lines, transformation equations from the image domain to the real world domain are easily defined. Moreover, the distances to obstacles in the robot’s visual domain can be estimated. Our proposed method can not only easily identify obstacles and wall edges, but also estimate the distances and plan a collision-free path. Besides, this paper successfully integrates an image processing module with a local collision-free path planning, and also applies them to the collision-free and path planning of a mobile robot. …

Load Transfer And Deformation Analyses Of Piled-Raft Foundation In Taipei Metropolitan, Der-Guey Lin, Wen-Tsung Liu, Jui-Ching Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Piled-raft systems are often suitable for foundations of highrise buildings to increase the bearing capacity and reduce the excessive settlement of foundations. However, the conventional design of the piled-raft foundation commonly ignores the bearing effect of the raft. A parametric study on the piled-raft foundation performance including the bearing effect for typical Taipei Subsoil is investigated using 3D FDM program, FLAC 3D. Input parameters of the parametric study are back calculated from a series of static pile loading tests implemented on the jobsite of TIFC (Taipei International Financial Corporation or Taipei 101). Parametric study results show that the loadcarrying ratio …

Seismic Response Of An Arch-Beam Interacting With Sequential Moving Train Loads, Jong-Dar Yau, Ladislav Frýba, Shota Urushadze

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Considering the axial-flexural coupling nature of an arch bridge subjected to seismic wave, this paper is aimed at investigation of dynamic response for a train moving over a railway arch-bridge shaken by horizontal ground motions. For analytical formulation, the arch bridge is idealized as a flat-rise parabolic arch with constant sectional properties uniformly distributed along the horizontal span and the train moving over it as a sequence of identical sprung mass units with constant intervals. To perform dynamic analysis of vehicle-bridge system shaken by horizontal earthquakes, an incremental-iterative procedure is proposed in this study. From numerical results, the multiple support …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The aim of this study was to investigate high-efficiency hydrogen production through water electrolysis by using multiple electrodes; the investigated approach can be applied in industry. In this study, three groups of parallel electrodes were used to conduct experiments and research related to water electrolysis parameters. During electrolysis, we introduced Lorentz forces to an electrolytic cell to determine whether the multielectrode mode is identical to the single-electrode mode regarding increases in hydrogen production. The results showed that a multielectrode group instantly increased gas production. In addition, introducing an external upward magnetic field into an electrolytic cell increased gas production at …

The Development Of New Type Free-Fall Lifeboat Using Fluid Structure Interaction Analysis, Ahmad Fauzan Zakki, Aulia Windyandari, Dong Myung Bae Jun 2016

The Development Of New Type Free-Fall Lifeboat Using Fluid Structure Interaction Analysis, Ahmad Fauzan Zakki, Aulia Windyandari, Dong Myung Bae

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Freefall lifeboats provide a safe alternative to conventional lifeboats for emergency evacuation from ships and offshore platforms. The international regulations require that a lifeboat for free-fall launching should be able to give protection against impact accelerations when it is launched with its full occupants and equipment from at least the maximum designed height. Since the height of offshore structure to the water surface is significantly high, during the water entry phase the acceleration response of the free-fall lifeboat might cause an injury to the occupants. The special hull form design should be applied to reduce the acceleration. The aim of …

Model For Assessing The Functionality Of Soil And Water Conservation Facilities, Nai-Hsin Pan, Kuei-Yen Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Most soil and water conservation facilities are located in remote areas, posing measurement difficulties for precision instruments. Therefore, visual inspection, which is advantageous because of its high speed, is the primary assessment method for such facilities. However, the degree of infrastructural damage subjectively assessed by various inspectors may vary. Therefore, to overcome the problem induced by inspectors’ subjectivity in assessing facilities, this study adopted the concept of fuzzy set theory to establish a soil and water conservation facility assessment model that can define the membership functions of specific semantic ranges. This study applied semantics to infer current facility conditions, which …

Optimization Of Large-Scale Economic Dispatch With Valve-Point Effects Using A Modified Hybrid Pso-Dsm Approach, Chun-Lung Chen, Yu-Liang Lin, Yen-Chang Feng

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper proposes a modified hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the direct search method (DSM) for the solution of large-scale non-convex economic dispatch (NED) problem with valve-point effects. A novel diversity based particle swarm optimization (DPSO) with a fewer iterations required is developed to increase the possibility of generating high quality initial solutions for the DSM. The enhanced direct search method (EDSM) incorporates the parallel nature of evaluation programming into the direct search procedure to enhance its search capacity about global exploration and local optimization using the answer from DPSO as starting points. Many inequality and equality constraints can …

Robust Stabilization Of Uncertain Switched Nonlinear Systems With Two Modes, Jian-Qiang Wang, Chee-Fai Yung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this note, based on a control Lyapunov function approach, an integrated design of switching laws and feedback controllers for uncertain switched nonlinear control systems with two modes is discussed. A sufficient condition for the existence of globally asymptotically stabilizing state feedback laws (switching laws+ controllers) is derived. Moreover, an explicit rule for constructing switching laws and an explicit formula for synthesizing feedback controllers are presented. An illustrative example is given for verifying the benefit of our approach.

Soft Computing Technologies In Design Of Fuzzy Controller For Active Vibration Isolation Systems, Inn-Tong Chiu, Chih-Chung Fang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In the paper, we develop a two-phase design approach for a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) of an active vibration isolation system, which adopts two components of soft computing techniques, namely fuzzy logic control theory and neural networks. First, we design a fuzzy logic controller for an active vibration isolation system using fuzzy logic control theory. We conduct numerical simulations of an active vibration isolation system with three kinds of exciting loads. The results indicate that the performance of the fuzzy logic controller is very good, but its control rule surface does not measure up in practical terms. Secondly in the …

The Composite Design Of H?^?-Erl Sliding-Mode Controller, Shun-Min Wang, Zhi-Hao Chen, Cheng-Neng Hwang Jun 2016

The Composite Design Of H?^?-Erl Sliding-Mode Controller, Shun-Min Wang, Zhi-Hao Chen, Cheng-Neng Hwang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In a multi-input multi-output nonlinear system, because the system is subjected to the impacts of external disturbances and parametric uncertainties, its output response may not be able to satisfy the desired specification or even may make the system unstable. The H-ERL sliding mode controller proposed in this paper is motivated to solve these problems. This controller utilizes the concept of sliding mode controller with ERL (Exponential Reaching Law) as its major framework, and then uses Lyapunov stability theorem to ensure the closedloop stability when the system encounters prescribed external disturbances and parametric uncertainties. For the optimal selection of the adjustable …

Applications Of Datum Marker Buoy Data To Search And Rescue Of Persons In Water, Chou-Tien Yao, Chen-Han Tsai, Hsiang-Hang Hsu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The seas around Taiwan have been ranked as posing a moderate risk to ocean-going activities because of heavy ocean traffic and severe weather conditions such as typhoons and monsoons. Taiwan’s Coast Guard responds to approximately 500 calls each year, and over 50% of its search and rescue missions involve persons in water (PIW). The drift of PIW at sea without propulsion is affected by ocean currents, wind, and wave actions. Therefore, having timely, reliable, and accurate environmental information, particularly regarding surface currents, is important to locate a drifting target. We examined the surface current data collected by Taiwan Coast Guard’s …

Investigating Microstructures And High Temperature Superplasticity Behavior Of Mg-5(Mass%) Sn Alloy By Using Equal Channel Angular Extrusion, Hao-Jan Tsai, Chin-Guo Kuo, Chuen-Guang Chao, Tzeng-Feng Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, we investigated the microstructures and high temperature plasticity behaviour of an Mg-5(mass%) Sn alloy after equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). These results show that the grain boundary of the as-cast Mg-5(mass%) Sn alloy contained continuous eutectic ɑ-Mg+Mg2Sn precipitates. After an ECAE process, the average grain size decreased from 147 μm to about 10 μm and the continuous eutectic ɑ-Mg+ Mg2Sn particles were broken down, and those particles distributed uniformly. The maximum elongation was 550 % at high temperature 350C with strain rate of 1x10-3 s-1.

Slope Stability Analysis Of Transient Seepage Under Extreme Climates: Case Study Of Typhoon Nari In 2001, Chia-Feng Hsu, Lien-Kwei Chien

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The effects of climate change, the inherent fragility of geological structures in Taiwan, and questionable developmental practices have led to the occurrence of numerous slope disasters, most of which were triggered by the extreme rainfall associated with typhoons. Therefore, this study collected rainfall data associated with typhoons striking northern Taiwan over the last 17 years, as a follow up to estimating database of extreme rainfall events. Most previous investigations regarding the impact of storms on slope stability focused on solutions with conditions, such as static groundwater levels or steady pore pressure. Previous studies have used software STABL to analyze slope …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper proposes the design and evaluation methodologies for a remote human-machine interface (HMI) system for motor winding machines. An electric motor with an interior rotor evaluates the system performance. The motor winding machine has a 3 degree-of-freedom motion space controlled by a motion control kernel: IMP-2. Real-time data of the motor winding status is crucial for ensuring quality and reliability and detecting malfunction, which facilitates the development and control of mass production of electric motors. Hence, a realtime monitoring interface is essential. This paper presents a LabVIEW-based HMI, which transfers the winding statuses of a winding machine to remote …

Unbalanced Load Compensation In Three-Phase Power System With A Current-Regulated Dstatcom Based On Multilevel Converter, Wei-Neng Chang, Ching-Huan Liao, Po-Li Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a current-regulated distribution-level static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) is proposed for real-time unbalanced load compensation in three-phase electric power distribution systems. The main circuit of the DSTATCOM uses multilevel cascade full H-bridge converter with delta-connected configuration, which is suitable for high-voltage, high-power applications. The compensation algorithm of the DSTATCOM is derived in the phasor domain. Preliminary verification of the DSTATCOM is executed with MatLab/SimuLink program. Finally, a hardware prototype is built for testing. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed DSTATCOM for real-time unbalanced load compensation.

A Novel Method For Testing Lcd By Integrating Shorting Bar And Taguchi Doe Technologies, Jium-Ming Lin, Yuan-Jung Chiang Jun 2016

A Novel Method For Testing Lcd By Integrating Shorting Bar And Taguchi Doe Technologies, Jium-Ming Lin, Yuan-Jung Chiang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper proposes a novel LCD false defect detection method that involves integrating shorting-bar and Taguchi technologies. When both the gate and data lines of an LCD are activated using a shorting bar technique, and an illuminator is applied to the background panel, if all thin-film transistor (TFT) arrays are free of point defect failures, then the lights from the illuminator can penetrate the scanned pixels (i.e., a bright, complete image should appear on the display). Otherwise, there are defects in the TFT cells exhibiting dark patterns. In this study, the P-diagram of the Taguchi design of experiment method was …

Predictions Of Stress-Strain Curve And Fatigue Life For Aisi 316 Stainless Steel In Cyclic Straining, Liang-Hsiung Chou, Yung-Chuan Chiou, Chia-Chin Wu, Ying- Jen Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, experimental observations have been performed to understand the cyclic stress-amplitude response, the cyclic hardening/softening characteristics and the cyclic fatigue properties of AISI 316 stainless steel. Based on the experimental observations, these results are found so that the tested AISI 316 stainless steel possesses cyclic hardening characteristics. The shape of the stable hysteresis loop is symmetrical in tension and compression. The Massing cyclic stress-strain behavior is obviously absent. For the case of the absence of the Massing behavior, the power-law type equation is successfully applied to simulate the shape of the stable hysteresis loop at all applied levels …

The Hydrodynamic Characteristics Of An Inclined Submerged Porous Plate With Rock Filled Structure, Ching-Yun Yueh, Shih-Hsuan Chuang, Chih-Hao Su

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, we investigate the hydrodynamic efficiency of normal incident waves interacting with an absorbing system. The wave absorbing system consists of a submerged permeable structure filled with rock, a solid back wall, and a submerged horizontal or slightly inclined porous plate. Using a linear wave theory assumption, a multi-domain BEM (MBEM) model was created to calculate and discuss the reflection coefficients, free surface wave profiles, total wave force on the solid wall, and the horizontal and uplift forces acting on the porous plate of the water waves from several properties of the breakwater. The numerical model was calibrated …

Probability Calculation Method With Neural Network For Estimating Wave Overtopping At Coastal Structures: Learning From Regular Wave Tests, Ching-Piao Tsai, Karl-Friedrich Daemrich, Chuen-Lin Ho Jun 2016

Probability Calculation Method With Neural Network For Estimating Wave Overtopping At Coastal Structures: Learning From Regular Wave Tests, Ching-Piao Tsai, Karl-Friedrich Daemrich, Chuen-Lin Ho

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An exact mathematical description of the wave overtopping processes is impossible due to the complex nature of the processes. Therefore the dependency of overtopping from wave parameters and coastal structures was mostly studied by physical model tests. To avoid the uncertainties due to imperfect statistics of wave heights in the irregular wave trains performed in physical models, the mean overtopping rates of irregular waves can be determined by the probability calculation method (PCM) (Goda, 2000) based on the regular wave data. The PCM combined with an artificial neural network (NN) technique is proposed in this paper to determine the mean …

We used Plaxis 2D software to analyze the gravel layer. The results indicated that, when the fifth layer of gravel was set to N = 100 and the range of the soil elastic modulus Es was set between 7.84N …

Velocity-Based Egress Model For The Analysis Of Evacuation Process On Passenger Ships, Yoon-Ok Cho, Sol Ha, Kwang-Phil Park Jun 2016

Velocity-Based Egress Model For The Analysis Of Evacuation Process On Passenger Ships, Yoon-Ok Cho, Sol Ha, Kwang-Phil Park

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study presents a velocity-based egress model, which takes into account different aspects of human behavior in an emergency situation, for the evacuation analysis on passenger ships. It was supposed that the egress model consists of three behaviors: individual, crowd, and emergency behavior. The individual behavior was represented by the body shape, walking speed, walking direction, and rotation of each passenger. The basic walking direction of each passenger was obtained as a solution to the shortest distance route to a destination using a visibility graph. The crowd behavior of the passengers was composed of two components: one is a flock …

Numerical Simulation Study Of Hydrodynamic Impact Of Sea-Crossing Bridge, Xiao-Feng Guo, Chu-Han Chen, Jun-Jian Tang, Zhou-Hua Guo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper used the Sea-Crossing Bridge in Quanzhou Bay as an example to simulate its tidal flow field after construction by a semi-implicit Lagrangian-Eulerian finite difference method. Triangle or quadrilateral meshes were used to refine a mesh for the sea area close to the bridge in the model. Each bridge pier was treated as land. The minimum side length of the mesh was approximately 5 meters. The simulation results showed that slow flow areas were formed in front of bridge piers due to the influence of rising and falling tides; at the back of bridge piers, slow flow areas were …

On Wave Interaction With Floating Structures With Dragged Moorings, Po-I Chen, Cheng-Tsung Chen, Jaw-Fang Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study developed an analytical solution in the frequency domain that considers the interactions among waves, floating structures, and mooring lines. The proposed solution was applied to investigate a problem involving a moored floating structure subjected to incident waves. The floating structure was considered as moving with three degrees of freedom, namely surge, heave, and roll. The mooring lines were simplified as springs, and the springs were assumed to be subjected to a Morison-type wave force. In the proposed solution, the wave field is first expressed as a problem involving a superposition of scattering and radiation waves. The wave field …

Corrosion Of Rebar Under Carbonation And Salt Environment, Wei-Chung Yeih, Jiang-Jhy Chang, Yu-Ping Huang, Ran Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, the behavior of reinforced concrete under carbonation and in a salt environment was investigated. Three types of cements- Type I cement, Type II cement and highalumina cement (HAC) - were used to study the influence of cement on reinforced concrete behavior. To simulate chloridecontaminated concrete, 1% NaCl (by cement weight) was added to some groups of specimens. Results revealed that the carbonation released chloride ions from Friedel's salt, which increased the chloride content near the carbonation front. The carbonation rate of HAC concrete was higher than that of Type I and Type II cement concrete. The corrosion …
