A Parametric Study Of An Implementing Adaptive Time Reversal Mirror As A Crosstalk Mechanism For Underwater Communication, Yi-Wei Lin, Gee-Pinn Too

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The time reversal mirror technique has been widely applied to mitigate the inter-symbol interference in underwater channels. Meanwhile, an adaptive time reversal mirror is introduced to improve the crosstalk quality between receivers in underwater acoustic communication (UAC). However, array configuration affects the performance of this mechanism. To explore the effectiveness of this method, this study extended the analysis of adaptive time reversal mirror as a crosstalk mechanism and explored the mechanism in an experiment using a towing tank as a testing platform. The advantage of this process is its simplicity in examining the effects of the array configuration of this …

High-Frequency Excited Non-Premixed Jet Flame In Crossflow, Richard Kyalo Kimilu, Rong Fung Huang, Ching Min Hsu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A non-premixed jet flame acoustically pulsed at the third resonant frequency of 645 Hz was studied experimentally in a wind tunnel. Flame behavior, characteristics, temperature distributions, and combustion-product distributions were investigated. The flame behavior was characterized by flame visualization. Flame dimensions were obtained from long-exposure flame images. A fine-wire, R-type thermocouple was used to probe temperature distributions while combustion product concentrations were measured using a gas analyzer. Three characteristic flame modes, I, II, and III were identified in the domain of jet pulsation intensity (Ipul). Mode I flames (0 ≦ Ipul ≦ 0.30) were not affected by pulsation, and remained …

Numerical Simulation Of Solitary Wave Propagation In A Vegetated Channel Using An Extended Boussinesq Model, Mingliang Zhang, Huiting Qiao, Yuanyuan Xu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An explicit one-dimensional model based on the extended Boussinesq equations was established to calculate solitary wave propagation in vegetated and non-vegetated waters. This model adopts a hybrid solution combining the finite difference (FD) and the finite-volume (FV) methods. This hybrid model can also simulate wave propagation as the FV solution of a non-linear shallow water equations (NSWE) model by removing the higher order Boussinesq terms. The resistance force caused by vegetation is added into a source term in the momentum equation. The interface fluxes are evaluated using the Harten-Lax-van Leer (HLL) approximate Riemann solver with reconstruction technique, providing a robust …

Effects Of Power System Stabilizer On Damping Of Inter-Area Oscillation Using Remote Signal, Van-Dien Doan, Ta-Hsiu Tseng, Pei-Hwa Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The inter-area oscillations in large interconnected power systems often have features of being low-frequency, lightly damped, and affecting relatively more generating units located in multiple areas. They restrict the allowable power flow on tielines and may lead to unexpected contingencies if it is not to be in proper observation. The main objective of this paper is to present a small signal stability analysis applied to Vietnam Power System which is a longitudinal network structure with the consideration of Power System Stabilizers (PSS) in operation to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillation by using local as well as remote feedback signals …

Application Of An Extension Neural Network Method For Fault Diagnosis Of Three-Level Inverters Used In Marine Vessels, Kuei-Hsiang Chao, Yu-Ren Shen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study proposes an extension neural network (ENN) algorithm to carry out the fault diagnosis of an inverter in a motor drive system for marine vessels. First, we use PSIM software to construct a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter, which simulates the occurrence of the fault of any power transistor in the NPC inverter. Simultaneously, we use fast Fourier transforms to transcribe the waveform of phase voltage in the time domain during the fault of any power transistor entering the spectrum in the frequency domain, looking for the corresponding characteristic spectrum during the fault of the power transistor. Next, …

Dynamic Economic Relations Among Steel Price Indices, Ming-Tao Chou Oct 2016

Dynamic Economic Relations Among Steel Price Indices, Ming-Tao Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Bulk shipping is now a globalized industry, with market prices entirely dependent on the world’s economic climate. For the bulk shipping market, the steel price index is a crucial standard of reference. In a global industry, the ability to understand the international relationship between changes in information and their effects on economics can help to reduce losses caused by the uncertainty of risk. Because the types of ships and contracts used in bulk shipping are wide-ranging, market participants tend to have difficulty in determining market price changes and trends, and are therefore forced to face greater market uncertainty and volatility. …

Bearing Boundary Element Method Based On Geometrically Similar Roller Conditions, Xia Yang, Ya-Chao Li, Chuang Yan, Guang-Ming Liu, Jian-Mei Wang, Hai-Lian Gui

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To solve the three-dimensional pressure and load distribution of roller bearings, a new boundary element method (BEM) is presented in this report. First, a discrete model of the initial location roller was established, and the other rollers’ discrete data could be obtained using geometrically similar conditions of this model. Based on the three-dimensional elastic contact BEM, all of the bearing rollers could be described as one object; therefore, the roller bearing problem of a multi-object contact system could be simplified as the problem of a threeobject contact system. Bearing boundary elements were used to realize the discontinuous traction on the …

Analysis Of Wave Interaction With Double Vertical Slotted Walls Using Mbem, Ching-Yun Yueh, Chih-Hao Su, Chun-Chiang Wen, Shih-Hsuan Chuang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a multi-domain boundary element method (MBEM) is formulated and applied to study wave interaction with double vertical slotted walls, which are modeled as thin or non-thickness structures. Two-dimensional motion with wave crests parallel to the vertical slotted walls and linearized irrotational flow are assumed. The accuracy of the solution obtained using the numerical technique is demonstrated by comparing the numerical values with those obtained from experiments and from other analytical solutions. A comparison of the hydrodynamic performance of the breakwater with identical or different double vertical slotted walls is conducted. In addition, the numerical results of the …

Ultra-Large Grain Pure Copper Microstructure Under Low Cycle Fatigue, Hsing-Lu Huang, Shih-Wei Mao, Tz-Li Hu, Dershin Gan, New-Jin Ho

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The dislocation structure evolution in polycrystalline copper at constant strain amplitude during low cycle fatigue is well understood. Single crystal, ultra-large grain polycrystalline copper dislocation development has received little attention. Ultra-grain polycrystalline copper with 600 m average grain size was used in this study to investigate the dislocation development at different fatigue strain amplitudes. The results show that; (1) the stress curve vs. number of cycles (S-N curve) produces hardening in the first stage followed by softening regardless of the strain amplitude. At the same time, no plateau is found in the S-N curves. (2) The fatigue saturation stress increases …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a fuzzy controller design problem is considered for the discrete-time stochastic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a less conservative fuzzy controller design method for the discretetime nonlinear stochastic systems, which are modeled by the T-S fuzzy models. Based on the concept of imperfect premise matching, the fuzzy controller is designed without the limitation imposed from sharing the same membership functions of fuzzy model. In other words, the imperfect premise matching technique provides a generalization approach in designing fuzzy controller. Moreover, the flexibility and robustness of proposed fuzzy controller design approach …

Shape Optimization Of Two-Chamber Mufflers Hybridized With Multiple Parallel Dissipative Tubes Using Simulated Annealing Method, Ho-Chih Cheng, Min-Chie Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Mufflers hybridized with a single dissipative tube have been extensively researched; however, there has been a palpable lack of work directed toward mufflers conjugated with multiple parallel dissipative tubes that disperse venting fluid and reduce secondary noise. That being so, an analysis of the Sound Transmission Loss (STL) of two-chamber mufflers with multiple parallel dissipative tubes that are optimally designed to perform within a limited space will be considered, here. By using a decoupled numerical method, a four-pole system matrix for evaluating acoustic performance (STL) emerges. During the optimization process, a simulated annealing (SA) method, which is a robust scheme …

In the u-w-p model, acceleration, velocity and displacement has been considered, and three important parameters: pore water pressure, effective stress and shear stress, are obtained from the model with Finite Difference Method (FDM) and applied to describe the general behavior of seabed consisting of various …

Longitudinal Surface Roughness Effects In Magnetic Fluid Lubricated Journal Bearings, Jaw-Ren Lin Aug 2016

Longitudinal Surface Roughness Effects In Magnetic Fluid Lubricated Journal Bearings, Jaw-Ren Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

According to the magnetic fluid model incorporating with the stochastic model, the performance characteristics of a magnetic fluid lubricated short journal bearing with rough surfaces are investigated. A stochastic magnetic fluid based Reynolds equation has been derived. Analytical expressions for the bearing performances are also obtained. From the results obtained, the effects of longitudinal roughness patterns result in an increased load capacity as well as a reduced friction parameter and attitude angle. The amounts of increased load and reduced friction parameter are more pronounced for the bearing operating at higher values of the volume concentration, magnetic parameter, roughness parameter and …

Dynamic Simulation Of Subsea Equipment Installation Using An Offshore Support Vessel Based On Flexible Multibody System Dynamics, Jeong-Woo Hong, Myung-Il Roh, Seung-Ho Ham, Sol Ha

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An offshore support vessel (OSV) is a ship that supports exploration, development, and production activities in the offshore industry. Recently, industrial demand for OSVs has increased due to a large number of offshore field development projects worldwide. One of the main functions of an OSV is heavy lifting such as subsea equipment installations in offshore oil or gas fields using crane. Therefore, predicting dynamic loads in various operation conditions is one of the crucial points in the lifting operation of an OSV. To do this, crane-lifting simulation needs to precede real operation to verify the safety of the lifting operation. …

Chloride-Binding Isotherms In Concrete Submitted To Non-Steady-State Diffusion-Migration Model, Wen-Hu Tsao, Ming-Te Liang, Ta-Peng Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

We propose a mathematical non-steady-state, time/depth dependent diffusion-migration model based on the modified Fick’s second law of diffusion. It considers the effects of different chloride binding mechanisms for the transport process of chloride ions diffused in a porous concrete on the variation of its chloride profile. Four different chloride-binding isotherms, i.e., no binding, linear binding, Langmuir binding and Freundlich binding, together with the time/depth dependent chloride diffusivities are investigated. Results of this study show that the variations of amounts of available free chloride ions in the solution of saturated concrete resulting from different chloride-binding isotherms have significant effects on the …

Simulation Of The Effect Of Breakwater On The Propagation Of Solitary Waves, Ching-Piao Tsai, Ying-Chi Chen, Chun-Jen Chen, Chang Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A numerical simulation of the effect of breakwater on the propagation of solitary waves was presented in this study using CFD based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the renormalization group (RNG) turbulent model. The wave transformation and the flow field variation of solitary waves propagating over composite breakwaters of different heights were simulated. The effect of breakwater height on the run-up of solitary waves on the slope was discussed. The simulation results revealed a jet-like flow phenomenon when solitary waves passing over breakwaters due to the water level difference between the weather and lee sides of the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a method for combining sequential neural-network approximation and orthogonal arrays (SNAOA) in determining the operation parameters on the performance of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). An orthogonal array was first conducted to obtain the initial solution set. The results obtained from the orthogonal array were then used as the experimental data for response surface methodology (RSM) that could predict the operation parameters at discrete levels. The set was then treated as the initial training sample. Next, a back-propagation sequential neural network was trained to simulate the feasible domain for seeking optimal operation parameters of PEMFC. …

Strategies To Improve The Direct Search Method For Non-Convex Wind-Thermal Coordination Dispatch Problem Considering Transmission Capacity, Chun-Lung Chen Aug 2016

Strategies To Improve The Direct Search Method For Non-Convex Wind-Thermal Coordination Dispatch Problem Considering Transmission Capacity, Chun-Lung Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents some strategies to improve the direct search method (DSM) for solving the multi-area wind-thermal coordination dispatch (MWCD) problem considering the nonlinear characteristics of a generator such as valve-point effects. Although the DSM approaches have several advantages suitable to tackle the difficult non-convex economic dispatch (NED) problems, they still have the drawbacks such as exploration problem, exploitation problem and constraint handling problem. The main problem of the conventional DSM is that it gets easily trapped in a local optimal solution due to premature convergence. This paper proposes a stochastic direct search method (SDSM) employing the parallel stochastic searching …

Application Of A Residual-Norm-Based Algorithm To Solve Elliptic Boundary Value Problems, Yung-Wei Chen, Chun-Ming Chang, Hui-Ming Fang, Pai-Chen Guan Aug 2016

Application Of A Residual-Norm-Based Algorithm To Solve Elliptic Boundary Value Problems, Yung-Wei Chen, Chun-Ming Chang, Hui-Ming Fang, Pai-Chen Guan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, we use a residual-norm-based algorithm (RNBA) to solve nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems (BVPs) on an arbitrary planar domain. For complex geometries, BVPs are very difficult and time-consuming to solve using conventional finite difference methods (FDMs). To overcome these problems, we apply a novel finite difference method (NFDM). By adding a fictitious rectangular domain and a bilinear function, we can easily treat geometrically complex boundary conditions. Then, through the use of the internal residual and the boundary residual, we can easily obtain the solution without the necessity of computing a matrix inverse. The RNBA avoids the oscillations …
