Electrochemical Generation Of Superoxide In Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids, Inas M. Alnashef, Matthew L. Leonard, Matthew C. Kittle, Michael A. Matthews, John W. Weidner
Electrochemical Generation Of Superoxide In Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids, Inas M. Alnashef, Matthew L. Leonard, Matthew C. Kittle, Michael A. Matthews, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
We have demonstrated that superoxide ion can be generated electrochemically in room-temperature ionic-liquid solvents. In the absence of impurities, cyclic voltammetry showed that the super oxide ion is stable in these solvents. Similar superoxide ion chemistry has previously been demonstrated in volatile and environmentally suspect aprotic solvents such as dimethyl formamide and acetonitrile. However, ionic liquids are nonvolatile and should minimize the problems of secondary solvent waste. It is proposed that the resultant superoxide ion can be used to perform low temperature oxidation of wastes. Low-temperature oxidation of waste solvents can provide a much needed alternative to high-temperature waste incinerators, …
Consensus Ontologies: Reconciling The Semantics Of Web Pages And Agents, Larry M. Stevens, Michael N. Huhns
Consensus Ontologies: Reconciling The Semantics Of Web Pages And Agents, Larry M. Stevens, Michael N. Huhns
Faculty Publications
As you build a Web site, it is worthwhile asking, "Should I put my information where it belongs or where people are most likely to look for it?" Our recent research into improving searching through ontologies is providing some interesting results to answer this question. The techniques developed by our research bring organization to the information received and reconcile the semantics of each document. Our goal is to help users retrieve dynamically generated information that is tailored to their individual needs and preferences. We believe that it is easier for individuals or small groups to develop their own ontologies, regardless …
Automating Supply Chains, Michael N. Huhns, Larry M. Stevens
Automating Supply Chains, Michael N. Huhns, Larry M. Stevens
Faculty Publications
A recent study found that supply-chain problems cost companies between 9 and 20 percent of their value over a six-month period (T.J. Becker, 2000). The problems range from part shortages to poorly utilized plant capacity. When you place this in the context of the overall business-to-business (B2B) market expected to reach US$7 trillion by 2004 (37 percent of which is projected to be e-commerce sales), it is easy to see that effective supply-chain management (SCM) tools could save companies billions of dollars. Attempts to automate solutions to these problems are complicated by the need for the different companies in a …

Trust And Persistence, Paul A. Buhler, Michael N. Huhns

We rely on computers to control our power plants and water supplies, our automobiles and transportation systems, and soon our economic and political systems. Increasingly, software agents are enmeshed in these systems, serving as the glue that connects distributed components. Clearly, we need mechanisms to determine whether these agents are trustworthy. What do we need to establish trust? Agents are often characterized by features such as autonomy, sociability, proactiveness, and persistent identity. This latter feature is key in determining trust. When agents operate over an extended period, they can earn a reputation for competence, timeliness, ease of use, and trustworthiness, …

Probability And Agents, Marco Valtorta, Michael N. Huhns

To make sense of the information that agents gather from the Web, they need to reason about it. If the information is precise and correct, they can use engines such as theorem provers to reason logically and derive correct conclusions. Unfortunately, the information is often imprecise and uncertain, which means they will need a probabilistic approach. More than 150 years ago, George Boole presented the logic that bears his name. There is concern that classical logic is not sufficient to model how people do or should reason. Adopting a probabilistic approach in constructing software agents and multiagent systems simplifies some …
Philosophical Agents, John R. Rose, Michael N. Huhns
Philosophical Agents, John R. Rose, Michael N. Huhns

Abstraction is the technique we use to deal with complexity. What is the proper kind and level of abstraction for complex software agents? We think it would be reasonable to endow agents with a philosophy. Then, by understanding their philosophies, we can use them more effectively. To endow agents with ethical principles, developers need an architecture that supports explicit goals, principles and capabilities, as well as laws and ways to sanction or punish miscreants. All of the ethical approaches described in this article are single-agent in orientation and encode other agents implicitly.
Hysteresis During Cycling Of Nickel Hydroxide Active Material, Venkat Srinivasan, John W. Weidner, John Newman
Hysteresis During Cycling Of Nickel Hydroxide Active Material, Venkat Srinivasan, John W. Weidner, John Newman
Faculty Publications
The nickel hydroxide electrode is known to exhibit a stable hysteresis loop, with the potential on charge being higher than that on discharge at every state-of-charge (SOC). What we show here is that this loop created during a complete charge and discharge (i.e., boundary curves) is not sufficient to define the state of the system. Rather, internal paths within the boundary curves (i.e., scanning curves) can be generated that access potentials between the boundary curves. The potential obtained at any SOC, as well as how the material charges and discharges from that point, depends on the …

We have performed variable-temperature multimode quantitative microwavemicroscopy of in situepitaxial Ba1−xSrxTiO3 thin-film composition spreads fabricated on (100) LaA1O3 substrates. Dielectric properties were mapped as a function of continuously varying composition from BaTiO3 to SrTiO3. We have demonstrated nondestructive temperature-dependent dielectric characterization of local thin-film regions. Measurements are simultaneously taken at multiple resonant frequencies of the microscope cavity. The multimode measurements allow frequency dispersion studies. We observe strong composition-dependent dielectric relaxation in Ba1−xSrxTiO3 at microwave frequencies.

Ordered macroporous Sr0.5Sm0.5CoO3 structrures with an average pore size of 140 nm have been prepared using closepacked arrangement of monodispersed polystyrene spheres as templates. A fuel cell using ordered macroporous Sr0.5Sm0.5CoO3 as the cathode, gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) film as the electrolyte, and GDC–NiO as the anode generated maximum power densities of 150, 196 and 267 mW/cm2 at 500, 550 and 600 °C, respectively.
Approximate Solutions For Galvanostatic Discharge Of Spherical Particles I. Constant Diffusion Coefficient, Venkat R. Subramanian, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White
Approximate Solutions For Galvanostatic Discharge Of Spherical Particles I. Constant Diffusion Coefficient, Venkat R. Subramanian, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
Approximate models are developed, based on second, fourth, and sixth order polynomials, that describe the concentration profile of an electrochemically active species in a spherical electrode particle. Analytical expressions are obtained that describe the way the concentration profiles, surface concentrations, and electrode utilization change during the galvanostatic discharge of an electrode particle. Based on a comparison with an exact analytical model over a wide range of dimensionless current densities, all three approximate models performed extremely well in predicting these quantities. Quantitative criterion for the validity of these models is also developed and shows that the sixth order, four parameter approximate …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Hydrous Ruthenium Oxide-Carbon Supercapacitors, Manikandan Ramani, Bala S. Haran, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov
Faculty Publications
It is shown that composite Ru oxide-carbon based supercapacitors possess superior energy and power densities as compared to bare carbon. An electroless deposition process was used to synthesize the ruthenium oxide-carbon composites. Ru is dispersed on the carbon matrix as small particles. The effect of electrochemical oxidation and temperature treatment on the material performance has been studied extensively. Increasing the oxidation temperature reduces the proton transport rate and also increases the degree of crystallinity of the deposits. This adversely affects the performance of the composite. Loading a small amount of Ru oxide (9 wt %) on carbon increases the capacitance …

When we discuss agent-based system construction with software developers or ask students to implement common agent architectures using object-oriented techniques, we find that it is not trivial for them to create an elegant system design from the standard presentation of these architectures in textbooks or research papers. To better communicate our interpretation of popular agent architectures, we draw UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams to guide an implementer's design. However, before we describe these diagrams, we need to review some basic features of agents. The paper considers an architecture showing a simple agent interacting with an environment. The agent senses its …
Fulfilling The Bargain: How The Science Of Ergonomics Can Inform The Laws Of Workers’ Compensation, Jason M. Solomon
Fulfilling The Bargain: How The Science Of Ergonomics Can Inform The Laws Of Workers’ Compensation, Jason M. Solomon

In the last decade, cumulative trauma disorders have become a significant percentage of reported workplace injuries and litigated workers'compensation claims. Arising from the accumulated impact of daily work activities on the body, these injuries do not fall neatly within "disease" categories which comprise workers' compensation laws. As a result, courts and legislatures have struggled to properly evaluate workers' compensation claims for these injuries. This Note looks at the legal treatment of cumulative trauma injuries in light of the "original bargain" of workers' compensation, where workers give up a tort remedy against their employers in exchange for guaranteed, but limited, compensation …

The high spectral intensity of X-rays produced by the undulator at the Basic Energy Sciences Synchrotron Radiation Center of Argonne's Advanced Photon Source has allowed us to perform small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of the initial distribution of soot particles formed by various fuels. SAXS provides an in situ probe of the morphology of soot in the region between 1 and 100 nm and complements the ex situ technique of electron microscopy. The basic aspects of SAXS and its potential are illustrated with measurement on a laminar flame of acetylene in air. The more complex fuel toluene has been studied …
Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher
Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A CO/H2/O2/N2 flame was operated under fuel-rich conditions in a flat flame reactor to provide a high-temperature, oxygen-free environment to study secondary reactions of coal volatiles. The distributions of fuel nitrogen in the devolatilization products of four coals, ranging from high volatile bituminous to lignite, were obtained at gas temperatures ranging from 1159 to 1858 K. It was found that the initial nitrogen released was contained almost exclusively in the tar for all coals. Release of nitrogen from the char as light gases started at a later stage than tar nitrogen release. During secondary reactions, …

Simulation Of Coal Pyrolysis In Plasma Jet By Cpd Model, Yajun Tian, Kechang Xie, Suyu Zhu, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Reaction of coal in a plasma jet is complex and extremely rapid, and acetylene and carbon monoxide are the main products in the pyrolysis gas. Coal pyrolysis is assumed as the first step reaction when coal is injected into hot plasma jet with initial average temperature of 3700 K. Chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) is employed first to simulate this procedure in mechanism. The calculation results indicate coal pyrolysis rate in plasma jet is very fast and the retention time of coal staying in reactor is only several milliseconds. Comparing the calculation with experiment result, it was concluded that the CPD …

13-C Nmr Analysis Of Soot Produced From Model Compounds And A Coal, Mark S. Solum, Adel F. Sarofim, Ronald J. Pugmire, Thomas H. Fletcher, Haifeng Zhang
Faculty Publications
Soot samples, including the associated organics, produced from an Illinois No. 6 coal (five samples) and two model compounds, biphenyl (three samples) and pyrene (two samples), have been studied by 13C NMR methods. The coal soot data served as a guide to selection of the temperature range that would be most fruitful for investigation of the evolution of aerosols composed of soot and tars that are generated from model compounds. The evolution of the different materials in the gas phase followed different paths. The coal derived soots exhibited loss of aliphatic and oxygen functional groups prior to significant growth …

Transformations Of Coal-Derived Soot At Elevated Temperature, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jim Rigby, Jinliang Ma, Brent W. Webb
Faculty Publications
Coal pyrolysis experiments were performed in the post-flame region of a CH4/H2/air flat-flame burner operating under fuel-rich conditions, where the temperature and gas compositions were similar to those found in the near-burner region of an industrial pulverized coal-fired furnace. Volatiles released from the coal particles formed a cloud of soot particles surrounding a centrally fed coal/char particle stream. Soot samples were collected from the cloud at different residence times using a water-cooled, nitrogen-quenched probe. The soot samples were then analyzed for their elemental compositions of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and (by difference) oxygen plus inorganic matter. …

We report on quaternary AlInGaN/InGaN multiple quantum well(MQW)light emitting diode structures grown on sapphire substrates. The structures demonstrate high quality of the p–njunctions with quaternary MQW. At low forward bias (below 2 V), the temperature dependent of current–voltage characteristics are exponential with the ideality factor of 2.28, which is in a good agreement with the model of the injected carrier recombination in the space charge region. This ideality factor value is approximately three times lower than for conventional GaN/InGaN light emitting diodes(LEDs). The obtained data indicate the recombination in p–njunction space charge region to be responsible for a current transport …

The effect of the gate leakage current fluctuations on noiseproperties of AlGaN/GaN heterostructurefield effect transistors(HFETs) has been studied in conventional HFET structures and in AlGaN/GaN metal-oxide-semiconductorheterostructurefield effect transistors (MOS-HFETs). The comparison of the noiseproperties of conventional AlGaN/GaN HFETs and AlGaN/GaN MOS-HFETs fabricated on the same wafer, allowed us to estimate the contribution of the gate currentnoise to the HFET’s output noise. The effect of the gate current fluctuations on output noiseproperties of HFETs depends on the level of noise in the AlGaN/GaN HFETs. For the transistors with a relatively high magnitude of the Hooge parameter α∼10−3, even a …
Finite-Aperture Wire Grid Polarizers, Michael A. Jensen, Gregory P. Nordin
Finite-Aperture Wire Grid Polarizers, Michael A. Jensen, Gregory P. Nordin
Faculty Publications
The transmission characteristics of wire grid polarizers fabricated in finite apertures are investigated by using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain formulation. Specifically, the optical transmissivity and extinction ratio are characterized for a wide variety of geometrical parameters including aperture size in both dimensions, conducting wire fill factor, and polarizer thickness. A dispersive material model is used to investigate the performance of polarizers fabricated by using realistic metals at infrared wavelengths. The results indicate that the aperture dimension significantly impacts the polarizer transmission behavior and that the extinction of the unwanted polarization is often limited by depolarizing scattering that is due to …

Optically diffractive line gratings with 0.58- m feature sizes have been generated in 100- m perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) polymer films by direct micromolding using only a silicon master. Strong reflectivities from the green to red portions of the visible spectrum, depending on incident beam angle, were observed with 3 dB bandwidths of approximately 30 nm. This negative mold-free technique permits, for the first time to our knowledge, feature reproduction at submicrometer size scales, eliminates several steps from conventional soft lithographic methods, and marks itself as a practical means for rapidly generating planar photonic structures that operate spectrally in the visible and …

We investigate the interfacial electrochemical properties of an aqueous electrolyte solution with discrete water molecules in slab geometry between charged atomistic electrodes. Long-range intermolecular Coulombic interactions are calculated using the particle particle particle mesh method with a modification to account for the slab geometry. Density distribution profiles and potential drops across the double layer are given for 0, 0.25, and 1 M aqueous electrolyte solutions each electrode surface charges. Results are compared qualitatively with experimental x-ray scattering findings, other computer simulation results, and traditional electrochemistry theory. The interfacial fluid structure characteristics are generally in good qualitative agreement with the conclusions …

A computer network is said to provide hop integrity iff when any router p in the network receives a message m supposedly from an adjacent router q, then p can check that m was indeed sent by q, was not modified after it was sent, and was not a replay of an old message sent from q to p. We describe three protocols that can be added to the routers in a computer network so that the network can provide hop integrity. These three protocols are a secret exchange protocol, a weak integrity protocol, and a strong integrity protocol. All …

High Performance Micropane Electron Beam Window, Roger A. Dougal, Shengyi Liu
Faculty Publications
A silicon disk etched so that it contains a multitude of microscopic and thin window panes (micropanes) can potentially transmit a larger average electron beam current density and absorb a smaller fraction of the beam energy than a common metal foil window. The enhanced performance is achieved by a combination of decreased power loss due to the extremely small window thickness (~1 μm), and increased conductive cooling due to the small diameter (~50 μm) of the micropanes and the large cross section of the honeycomb structure that supports the micropanes. Beam current densities up to 34 A/cm2 are permitted within …

Two laboratory projects-a Doppler radar and a synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-designed to augment traditional electromagnetics education are proposed. The projects introduce students to component and system level design and expose them to modern computer-aided design (CAD) tools, microstrip and surface mount fabrication technologies, and industry standard test equipment and procedures. Additionally, because the projects result in a working radar system, students gain new enthusiasm for the electromagnetics discipline and directly see its relevance in the engineering field. Implementation of these laboratories within the curriculum have proven to be highly motivational and educational and have even contributed to increased enrolments in …
