Aerodynamic Performance Of Extended Formation Flight, Andrew Ning, Tristan Flanzer, Ilan Kroo
Aerodynamic Performance Of Extended Formation Flight, Andrew Ning, Tristan Flanzer, Ilan Kroo
Faculty Publications
Close formation flight is of limited practicality for commercial aviation. Our concept of extended formation flight takes advantage of the persistence of cruise wakes by extending the streamwise spacing between aircraft in a formation. This allows the aircraft to fly at safe separation distances from each other, while still benefiting from the upwash of the upstream wake(s). In this paper we are interested in estimating the performance of these extended formations, and estimating some of the effects that limit the longitudinal extent of the formation. We consider the effects of wake rollup, vortex decay, vortex instabilities, vortex motion, and atmospheric …

Fluxes Across Double-Diffusive Interfaces: A One-Dimensional-Turbulence Study, Esteban Gonzalez-Juez, Alan R. Kerstein, David O. Lignell
Faculty Publications
This work is a parametric study of the fluxes of heat and salt across unsheared and sheared double-diffusive interfaces using one-dimensional-turbulence (ODT) simulations. It is motivated by the need to understand how these fluxes scale with parameters related to the fluid molecular properties and background shear. Comparisons are made throughout with previous models and available measurements. In unsheared interfaces, ODT simulations show that the dimensionless heat flux Nu scales with the stability parameter Rρ, Rayleigh number Ra and Prandtl number Pr as Nu ~ (Ra/Rρ)0.37±0.03 when Pr varies from 3 to 100 and as Nu ~ (Ra/Rρ)0.31Pr0.22±0.04 when Pr varies …

Oxygen Vacancies Adjacent To Cu(2+) Ions In Tio(2) (Rutile) Crystals, A. T. Brant, Shan Yang (杨山), Nancy C. Giles, Zafar Iqbal, A. Manivannan, Larry E. Halliburton
Faculty Publications
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) are used to characterize Cu2+ ions substituting for Ti4+ ions in nominally undoped TiO2 crystals having the rutile structure. Illumination at 25 K with 442 nm laser light reduces the concentration of Cu2+ ions by more than a factor of 2. The laser light also reduces the EPR signals from Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions and introduces signals from Ti3+ ions. Warming in the dark to room temperature restores the crystal to its preilluminated state. Monitoring the recovery of the photoinduced changes in the Cu …
A Relaxed Fusion Of Information From Real And Synthetic Images To Predict Complex Behavior, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin
A Relaxed Fusion Of Information From Real And Synthetic Images To Predict Complex Behavior, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin
Faculty Publications
An important component of cognitive robotics is the ability to mentally simulate physical processes and to compare the expected results with the information reported by a robot's sensors. In previous work, we have proposed an approach that integrates a 3D game-engine simulation into the robot control architecture. A key part of that architecture is the Match-Mediated Difference (MMD) operation, an approach to fusing sensory data and synthetic predictions at the image level. The MMD operation insists that simulated and predicted scenes are similar in terms of the appearance of the objects in the scene. This is an overly restrictive constraint …
Worse-Than-Rayleigh Fading: Experimental Results And Theoretical Models, David W. Matolak, Jeff Frolik
Worse-Than-Rayleigh Fading: Experimental Results And Theoretical Models, David W. Matolak, Jeff Frolik
Faculty Publications
This article is motivated by the recent recognition that channel fading for new wireless applications is not always well described by traditional models used for mobile communication systems. In particular, fading data collected for vehicleto- vehicle and wireless sensor network applications has motivated new models for conditions in which channel fading statistics can be worse than Rayleigh. We review the use of statistical channel models, describe our example applications, and provide both measured and modeling results for these severe fading conditions.
Chemical Potential Perturbation: A Method To Predict Chemical Potentials In Periodic Molecular Simulations, Stan G. Moore, Dean R. Wheeler
Chemical Potential Perturbation: A Method To Predict Chemical Potentials In Periodic Molecular Simulations, Stan G. Moore, Dean R. Wheeler
Faculty Publications
A new method, called chemical potential perturbation (CPP), has been developed to predict the chemical potential as a function of density in periodic molecular simulations. The CPP method applies a spatially varying external force field to the simulation, causing the density to depend upon position in the simulation cell. Following equilibration the homogeneous (uniform or bulk) chemical potential as a function of density can be determined relative to some reference state after correcting for the effects of the inhomogeneity of the system. We compare three different methods of approximating this correction. The first method uses the van der Waals density …

Faculty Publications
The performance of Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6 (SFMO) as a cathode material has been investigated in this study. The oxygen ionic conductivityof SFMO reaches 0.13 S cm-1 at 800°C in air. The chemical diffusion coefficient (Dchem) and surface exchange constant (kex) of SFMO at 750°C are 5.0 x 10-6 cm2 s-1 and 2.8 x 10-5 cm s-1, respectively, suggesting that SFMO may have good electrochemicalactivity for oxygen reduction. SFMO shows a thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of 14.5 x 10-6 K-1 the …
Genomic Library Screens For Genes Involved In N-Butanol Tolerance In Escherichia Coli, Luis Reyes, Maria Almario, Katy Kao
Genomic Library Screens For Genes Involved In N-Butanol Tolerance In Escherichia Coli, Luis Reyes, Maria Almario, Katy Kao
Faculty Publications
Backgroundn-Butanol is a promising emerging biofuel, and recent metabolic engineering efforts have demonstrated the use of several microbial hosts for its production. However, most organisms have very low tolerance to n-butanol (up to 2% (v/v)), limiting the economic viability of this biofuel. The rational engineering of more robust n-butanol production hosts relies upon understanding the mechanisms involved in tolerance. However, the existing knowledge of genes involved in n-butanol tolerance is limited. The goal of this study is therefore to identify E. coli genes that are involved in n-butanol tolerance.Methodology/Principal FindingsUsing a genomic library enrichment strategy, we identified approximately 270 genes …

Effects Of Damköhler Number On Flame Extinction And Reignition In Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames Using Dns, David O. Lignell, Jacqueline H. Chen, Hans A. Schmutz
Faculty Publications
Results from a parametric study of flame extinction and reignition with varying Damköhler number using direct numerical simulation are presented. Three planar, non-premixed ethylene jet flames were simulated at a constant Reynolds number of 5120. The fuel and oxidizer stream compositions were varied to adjust the steady laminar extinction scalar dissipation rate, while maintaining constant flow and geometric conditions. Peak flame extinction varies from approximately 40% to nearly global blowout as the Damköhler number decreases. The degree of extinction significantly affects the development of the jets and the degree of mixing of fuel, oxidizer, and combustion products prior to reignition. …
A 3-D Chain Algorithm With Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model Elements, Robert Parley Chase, Robert H. Todd, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby
A 3-D Chain Algorithm With Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model Elements, Robert Parley Chase, Robert H. Todd, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby
Faculty Publications
A chain algorithm element is created from pseudo-rigid-body segments and used in a chain calculation that accurately predicts the force deflection relationship of beams with large 3-D deflections. Each chain element is made up of three pseudo-rigid-body models superimposed on each other acting orthogonally in relation to each other. The chain algorithm can predict large displacements and the force-deflection relationship of lateral torsional buckled beams significantly faster than the finite element method. This approach is not intended to compete with finite element analysis, but rather is a supplement tool that may prove particularly useful in the early phases of design …
The Use Of Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Determine The Phase Behavior And Critical Point Of Propane Molecular Models, Sonal Patel, W. Vincent Wilding, Richard L. Rowley
The Use Of Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Determine The Phase Behavior And Critical Point Of Propane Molecular Models, Sonal Patel, W. Vincent Wilding, Richard L. Rowley
Faculty Publications
Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to determine two-phase configurations of model propane molecules below the critical point and in the near-critical, two-phase region. A postprocessor that uses a Monte Carlo method for determination of volumes attributable to each molecule was used to obtain density histograms of the particles from which the bulk coexisting equilibrium vapor and liquid densities were determined. This method of analyzing coexisting densities in a two-phase simulation is straightforward and can be easily implemented for complex, multisite models. Various degrees of internal flexibility in the propane models have little effect on the coexisting densities at temperatures 40 …

Scanning Capacitance Spectroscopy On N+-P Asymmetrical Junctions In Multicrystalline Si Solar Cells, Chun-Sheng Jiang, Jennifer T. Heath, Helio R. Moutinho, Mowafak M. Al-Jassim
Faculty Publications
We report on a scanning capacitance spectroscopy (SCS) study on the n+-p junction of multicrystalline silicon solar cells. We found that the spectra taken at space intervals of ∼10 nm exhibit characteristic features that depend strongly on the location relative to the junction. The capacitance-voltage spectra exhibit a local minimum capacitance value at the electrical junction, which allows the junction to be identified with ∼10-nm resolution. The spectra also show complicated transitions from the junction to the n-region with two local capacitance minima on the capacitance-voltage curves; similar spectra to that have not been previously reported in …

Effect Of Titanium Dioxide Supports On The Activity Of Pt-Ru Toward Electrochemical Oxidation Of Methanol, Roderick E. Fuentes, Brenda L. García, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
TiO2and Nb-TiO2 were investigated as stable supports for Pt-Ru electrocatalysts towards methanol oxidation. X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) data for all these TiO2-based supports show oxidation states of Ti4+, with no Ti3+, suggesting low electronic conductivity. However, the deposition of metal nanoparticles onto the supports at loadings of 60 wt% metal dramatically increased conductivity, making these electrodes (metal particles + support) suitable for electrochemistry even though the supports have low conductivity. For some of these TiO2-based supports, the activity of Pt-Ru towards methanol oxidation was excellent, even surpassing the activity …

Optical Cell For Combinatorial In Situ Raman Spectroscopic Measurements Of Hydrogen Storage Materials At High Pressures And Temperatures, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Wilbur S. Hurst, Sesha S. Srinivasan, James E. Maslar
Faculty Publications
An optical cell is described for high-throughput backscattering Raman spectroscopic measurements of hydrogen storagematerials at pressures up to 10 MPa and temperatures up to 823 K. High throughput is obtained by employing a 60 mm diameter × 9 mm thick sapphire window, with a corresponding 50 mm diameter unobstructed optical aperture. To reproducibly seal this relatively large window to the cell body at elevated temperatures and pressures, a gold o-ring is employed. The sample holder-to-window distance is adjustable, making this cell design compatible with optical measurement systems incorporating lenses of significantly different focal lengths, e.g., microscope objectives and single element …

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler
Faculty Publications
Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.
Single-Particle Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell: Thermal Behavior, Meng Guo, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White
Single-Particle Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell: Thermal Behavior, Meng Guo, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The single-particle model presented by Santhanagopalan et al. [ J. Power Sources , 156 , 620 (2006)] is extended to include an energy balance. The temperature dependence of the solid phase diffusion coefficient of the lithium in the intercalation particles, the electrochemical reaction rate constants, and the open circuit potentials (OCPs) of the positive and negative electrodes are included in the model. The solution phase polarization is approximated using a nonlinear resistance, which is a function of current and temperature. The model is used to predict the temperature and voltage profiles in a lithium-ion cell during galvanostatic operations. The single-particle …

Density Functional Theory Study On The Electronic Structure Of N- And P-Type Doped Srtio3 At Anodic Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Conditions, S. Suthirakun, Salai Cheettu Ammal, G. Xiao, Fanglin Chen, Hans-Conrad Zur Loye, Andreas Heyden
Faculty Publications
The electronic conductivity and thermodynamic stability of mixed n-type and p-type doped SrTiO3 have been investigated at anodic solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) conditions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In particular, constrained ab initio thermodynamic calculations have been performed to evaluate the phase stability and reducibility of various Nb- and Ga-doped SrTiO3 at synthesized and anodic SOFC conditions. The density of states (DOS) of these materials was analyzed to study the effects of n- and p-doping on the electronic conductivity. In agreement with experimental observations, we find that the transformation from 20% Nb-doped Sr-deficient SrTiO3 to a non-Sr-deficient phase …

Investigation Of An Iron-Based Additive On Coal Pyrolysis And Char Oxidation At High Heating Rates, John M. Sowa, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Iron-based catalysts have been shown to enhance coal pyrolysis and char oxidation at low to moderate temperatures and heating rates (b1250 K and 1–1000 K/s). Such catalytic activity has not been demonstrated at high heating rates and temperatures approaching pulverized coal combustion applications. The effect of an iron-based additive on coal pyrolysis and char combustion was studied in a flat-flame burner system at high particle heating rates using a Kentucky bituminous coal. Pyrolysis and char reactivity of two treated coals with different catalyst loadings were studied and compared with the untreated coal. The total volatiles yield for the treated coals …

Pyrolysis Kinetics Of A Green River Oil Shale Using A Pressurized Tga, James L. Hillier, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Crushed samples of Green River Oil Shale and its kerogen extract were pyrolyzed at heating rates from 1 to 10 K/min at pressures of 1 and 40 bar and temperatures up to 1000 C. Two to four mass release peaks were observed with the major two corresponding to kerogen pyrolysis and carbonate decomposition. The transient pyrolysis data were fit with a first-order model and a Distributed Activation Energy Model (DAEM). An F-test was used to determine confidence regions and compare the kinetic parameters among the oil shale and demineralized samples, between the two pressure levels, and between the models. The …

Dynamic Simulation Of A High Pressure Regulator, A. Shahani, H. Esmaili, Ashkan Aryaei, S. Mohammadi, M. Najar
Faculty Publications
In this paper, the dynamic simulation for a high pressure regulator is performed to obtain the regulator behavior. To analyze the regulator performance, the equation of motion for inner parts, the continuity equation for diverse chambers and the equation for mass flow rate were derived. Because of nonlinearity and coupling, these equations are solved using numerical methods and the results are presented. Additionally, the dynamic analysis results consist of the output pressure change versus time, the displacement of the moving parts versus time, the regulator mass flow rate versus time and the output pressure versus mass flow rate in different …
Self Assembly In Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities And Obstacles, Nathan B. Crane, J. Tuckerman, G. N. Nielson
Self Assembly In Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities And Obstacles, Nathan B. Crane, J. Tuckerman, G. N. Nielson
Faculty Publications
Purpose
Additive manufacturing offers substantial flexibility in shape, but much less flexibility in materials and functionality—particularly at small size scales. A system for automatically incorporating microscale components would enable the fabrication of objects with more functionality. This paper considers the potential of self assembly to serve as an automated programmable integration method. In particular, it addresses the ability of random self assembly processes to successfully assemble objects with high performance despite the possibility of assembly errors.
Methodology
A self-assembled thermoelectric system is taken as a sample system. The performance expectations for these systems are then predicted using modified one-dimensional models …

Particulate deposition experiments were performed in a turbine accelerated deposition facility to examine the effects of flyash particle size and trench configuration on deposits near film cooling holes. Deposition on two bare metal Inconel coupons was studied, with hole spacings (s/d) of 3.4 and 4.5. Two sizes of sub-bituminous coal ash particles were used, with mass mean diameter of 4 and 13 μm, respectively. The effect of a cooling trench at the exit of the cooling holes was also examined in this deposition facility. Experiments were performed at different angles of impaction. Particles were accelerated to a combustor exit flow …

Film Cooling Effectiveness And Heat Transfer Near Deposit-Laden Film Holes, Scott Lewis, Brett Barker, Jeffrey P. Bons, Weiguo Ai, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Experiments were conducted to determine the impact of synfuel deposits on film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer. Scaled up models were made of synfuel deposits formed on film-cooled turbine blade coupons exposed to accelerated deposition. Three distinct deposition patterns were modeled: a large deposition pattern (maximum deposit peak = 2 hole diameters) located exclusively upstream of the holes, a large deposition pattern (maximum deposit peak = 1.25 hole diameters) extending downstream between the cooling holes, and a small deposition pattern (maximum deposit peak = 0.75 hole diameter) also extending downstream between the cooling holes. The models featured cylindrical holes inclined …
Coal Swelling Model For High Heating Rate Pyrolysis Applications, Randy C. Shurtz, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher
Coal Swelling Model For High Heating Rate Pyrolysis Applications, Randy C. Shurtz, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Thermal swelling of coal during pyrolysis strongly influences combustion and gasification rates. Coal swelling is known to vary strongly with coal rank, heating rate, and total pressure. New experiments confirm and clarify previous observations that maximum swelling occurs for high-rank bituminous coals at heating rates slightly below 104 K/s. Advanced swelling models based on bubble physics yield good qualitative trends at low heating rates, but they fail to predict observed decreases in coal swelling as particle heating rates increase beyond 104 K/s. An empirical swelling correlation for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications that correctly describes experimentally observed trends …

The Effects Of Wind On The Flame Characteristics Of Individual Leaves, Wesley J. Cole, Mckaye H. Dennis, Thomas H. Fletcher, David R. Weise
Faculty Publications
Individual cuttings from five shrub species were burned over a flat-flame burner under wind conditions of 0.75–2.80m s-1. Both live and dead cuttings were used. These included single leaves from broadleaf species as well as 3 to 5 cm-long branches from coniferous and small broadleaf species. Flame angles and flame lengths were determined by semi-automated measurements of video images. Additional data, such as times and temperatures corresponding to ignition, maximum flame height and burnout were determined using video and infrared images. Flame angles correlated linearly with wind velocity. They also correlated with the Froude number when either the …

This paper presents a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based tool designed to process file transfers using the BitTorrent Peer-to-Peer (P2P) protocol and VoIP phone calls made using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The tool searches selected control messages in real time and compares the unique identifier of the shared file or phone number against a list of known contraband files or phone numbers. Results show the FPGA tool processes P2P packets of interest 92% faster than a software-only configuration and is 97.6% accurate at capturing and processing messages at a traffic load of 89.6 Mbps.
Effective Ionic Conductivity Of A Novel Intermediate-Temperature Mixed Oxide-Ion And Carbonate-Ion Conductor, Xue Li, Guoliang Xiao, Kevin Huang
Effective Ionic Conductivity Of A Novel Intermediate-Temperature Mixed Oxide-Ion And Carbonate-Ion Conductor, Xue Li, Guoliang Xiao, Kevin Huang
Faculty Publications
A systematic investigation on the effective ionic conductivity (σm) of a novel intermediate-temperature mixed oxide-ion and carbonate-ion conductor MOCC consisting of a ceria phase and a carbonate phase is reported. The study explicitly shows that the observed remarkable temperature-dependent σm is primarily the result of softening/melting of the carbonate phase as the physical state of the carbonate phase transforms from solid, softened to molten. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis complements the understanding of the observed electrical behavior by revealing temperatures of melting and solidification in agreement with the onset temperatures of σm. In addition, the …
