Thermal Management Using Mems Bimorph Cantilever Beams, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Robert S. Lafleur, John P. Walton, Laverne A. Starman

Faculty Publications

This paper examines a passive cooling technique using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for localized thermal management of electronic devices. The prototype was designed using analytic equations, simulated using finite element methods (FEM), and fabricated using the commercial PolyMUMPs™ process. The system consisted of an electronic device simulator (EDS) and MEMS bimorph cantilever beams (MBCB) array with beams lengths of 200, 250, and 300 μm that were tested to characterize deflection and thermal behavior. The specific beam lengths were chosen to actuate in response to heating associated with the EDS (i.e. the longest beams actuated first corresponding to the hottest portion of …

Direct Bandgap Cross-Over Point Of Ge1-YSnY Grown On Si Estimated Through Temperature-Dependent Photoluminescence Studies, Thomas R. Harris, Mee-Yi Ryu, Yung Kee Yeo, Buguo Wang, C. L. Senaratne

Faculty Publications

Epitaxial Ge1-ySny (y = 0%–7.5%) alloys grown on either Si or Ge-buffered Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition were studied as a function of Sn content using temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL). PL emission peaks from both the direct bandgap (Γ-valley) and the indirect bandgap (L-valley) to the valence band (denoted by ED and EID, respectively) were clearly observed at 125 and 175 K for most Ge1-ySny samples studied. At 300 K, however, all of the samples exhibited dominant ED emission with either very weak or no measureable EID emission. At 10 K, …

A Hybrid Optimization Technique Applied To The Intermediate-Target Optimal Control Problem, Clay J. Humphreys, Richard G. Cobb, David R. Jacques, Jonah A. Reeger Aug 2016

A Hybrid Optimization Technique Applied To The Intermediate-Target Optimal Control Problem, Clay J. Humphreys, Richard G. Cobb, David R. Jacques, Jonah A. Reeger

Faculty Publications

The DoD has introduced the concept of Manned-Unmanned Teaming, a subset of which is the loyal wingman. Optimal control techniques have been proposed as a method for rapidly solving the intermediate-target (mid-point constraint) optimal control problem. Initial results using direct orthogonal collocation and a gradient-based method for solving the resulting nonlinear program reveals a tendency to converge to or to get `stuck’ in locally optimal solutions. The literature suggested a hybrid technique in which a particle swarm optimization is used to quickly find a neighborhood of a more globally minimal solution, at which point the algorithm switches to a gradient-based …

Faculty Publications

The interactive nature of web applications or “web apps” makes them a well-suited medium for conveying complex scientific concepts to lay audiences and creating decision support tools that harness cutting edge modeling techniques and promote the work of environmental scientists and engineers. Despite this potential, the technical expertise required to develop web apps represents a formidable barrier—even for scientists and engineers who are skilled programmers. This paper describes four hurdles that contribute to this barrier and introduces an approach to overcoming these hurdles. We present an open source implementation of this approach, a development and hosting environment for environmental web …

Surface Feature Engineering Through Nanosphere Lithography, Tod V. Laurvick, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., James M. Sattler, Robert A. Lake

Faculty Publications

How surface geometries can be selectively manipulated through nanosphere lithography (NSL) is discussed. Self-assembled monolayers and multilayers of nanospheres have been studied for decades and have been applied to lithography for almost as long. When compared to the most modern, state-of-the-art techniques, NSL offers comparable feature resolution with many advantages over competing technologies.

Open-Loop Electrowetting Actuation With Micro-Stepping, Qi Ni, Daniel E. Capecci, Nathan B. Crane Aug 2016

Open-Loop Electrowetting Actuation With Micro-Stepping, Qi Ni, Daniel E. Capecci, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Microfluidic-driven mechanical actuation opens new possibilities for positioning and manipulating delicate small components. However, existing microfluidic actuation methods are not well-suited to positioning with high resolution. This paper reports a method for precise, open-loop control of droplet position in finite steps by varying the duty cycle of the input signal in electrowetting actuation. When wetted to a solid object, both the droplet and the solid can be actuated. Unlike conventional electrowetting actuation methods, positioning resolution in our proposed method can be much smaller than the size of the underlying electrodes without requiring closed loop feedback control system. Using a leaky …

High-resolution (or \cross-correlation") electron backscatter diffraction analysis (HR-EBSD) utilizes cross-correlation techniques to determine relative orientation and distortion of an experimental electron backscatter diffraction pattern (EBSP) with respect to a reference pattern. The integrity of absolute strain and tetragonality measurements of a standard Si/SiGe material have previously been analyzed using reference patterns produced by kinematical simulation. While the results were promising, the noise levels were significantly higher for kinematically produced patterns, compared to real patterns taken from the Si region of the sample. This paper applies HR-EBSD techniques to analyze lattice distortion in a Si/SiGe sample, using recently developed dynamically simulated …

Application Of Voltammetry For Electroanalytical Measurement Of Concentrations In Lacl3-Mgcl2 Mixtures In Eutectic Licl-Kcl, Zhonghang Wang, Devin Rappleye, C S. Yang, Michael Simpson Aug 2016

Application Of Voltammetry For Electroanalytical Measurement Of Concentrations In Lacl3-Mgcl2 Mixtures In Eutectic Licl-Kcl, Zhonghang Wang, Devin Rappleye, C S. Yang, Michael Simpson

Faculty Publications

For electroanalytical measurement of molten chloride salts, various voltammetry methods have been used on mixtures of MgCl2 and LaCl3 in eutectic LiCl-KCl. These salt mixtures are of primary interest to spent nuclear fuel electrorefining systems. MgCl2 is used as a surrogate for PuCl3, while LaCl3 represents rare earth fission product salts. Cyclic voltammetry scans with these salt mixtures exhibited extra peaks, presumably due to underpotential deposition of La(III) ions onto Mg. Quantitatively, the current contribution from each peak was best determined using normal pulse voltammetry and fit to the Cottrell equation. This yielded linear …

Toward Risk Assessment 2.0: Safety Supervisory Control And Model-Based Hazard Monitoring For Risk-Informed Safety Interventions, Francesca Favaro, Joseph Saleh Aug 2016

Toward Risk Assessment 2.0: Safety Supervisory Control And Model-Based Hazard Monitoring For Risk-Informed Safety Interventions, Francesca Favaro, Joseph Saleh

Faculty Publications

Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) is a staple in the engineering risk community, and it has become to some extent synonymous with the entire quantitative risk assessment undertaking. Limitations of PRA continue to occupy researchers, and workarounds are often proposed. After a brief review of this literature, we propose to address some of PRA׳s limitations by developing a novel framework and analytical tools for model-based system safety, or safety supervisory control, to guide safety interventions and support a dynamic approach to risk assessment and accident prevention. Our work shifts the emphasis from the pervading probabilistic mindset in risk assessment toward the …

A Lognormal Reliability Design Model, Edward Osakue, Lucky Anetor Aug 2016

A Lognormal Reliability Design Model, Edward Osakue, Lucky Anetor

Faculty Publications

It is well known that design loads vary randomly during equipment operations. Similarly, material properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, fatigue strength, etc. are random variables. Design analytical models are approximations of reality and failure mode models are also approximations. Consequently, design solutions are not exact. Practical design must therefore, consider the random nature and statistical variability of design parameters. Reliability-based design models are developed to provide practical design methods. This paper develops a lognormal reliability-based design model that can be coded in Excel Spreedsheet. Two design examples are considered in demonstrating the application of the formulated model. In …

Robust Bi-Directional Continuous Electrowetting Based On Metal-Semiconductor (M-S) Diodes, Qi Ni, Daniel E. Capecci, Millicent Schlafly, Nathan B. Crane Aug 2016

Robust Bi-Directional Continuous Electrowetting Based On Metal-Semiconductor (M-S) Diodes, Qi Ni, Daniel E. Capecci, Millicent Schlafly, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate bi-directional continuous electrowetting by embedding metal-semiconductor diodes in the electrowetting substrate. Unlike conventional electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD), bi-directional continuous electrowetting uses a single electrode pair to actuate a droplet through long distances. As long as the voltage potential is maintained between two end electrodes, the droplet moves toward the electrode with the higher potential. However, previously reported material systems had limited success in repeated actuation. In this work, diodes based on Schottky barriers were fabricated by forming metal-semiconductor junctions between titanium and high resistivity n-type silicon. The performance enhancements were evaluated using current-voltage measurements of interface pairs. When …

Guided Wave Based Crack Detection In The Rivet Hole Using Global Analytical With Local Fem Approach, Bhuiyan Yeasin Md, Yanfeng Shen, Victor Giurgiutiu

Faculty Publications

In this article, ultrasonic guided wave propagation and interaction with the rivet hole cracks has been formulated using closed-form analytical solution while the local damage interaction, scattering, and mode conversion have been obtained from finite element analysis. The rivet hole cracks (damage) in the plate structure gives rise to the non-axisymmetric scattering of Lamb wave, as well as shear horizontal (SH) wave, although the incident Lamb wave source (primary source) is axisymmetric. The damage in the plate acts as a non-axisymmetric secondary source of Lamb wave and SH wave. The scattering of Lamb and SH waves are captured using wave …

Structure from motion (SfM) computer vision is a remote sensing method that is gaining popularity due to its simplicity and ability to accurately characterize site geometry in three dimensions (3D). While many researchers have demonstrated the potential for SfM to be used with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to model in three dimensions various geologic features such as landslides, little is understood how the selection of the UAV platform can affect the resolution and accuracy of the model. This study evaluates the resolution and accuracy of 3D point cloud models of a large landslide that occurred in 2013 near Page, Arizona …

Insights Into Twinning In Mg Az31: A Combined Ebsd And Machine Learning Study, David T. Fullwood, Andrew Orme, Isaac Chelladurai, Travis Michael Rampton, Ali Khosravani, Michael Miles, Raj K. Mishra

Faculty Publications

To explore the driving forces behind deformation twinning in Mg AZ31, a machine learning framework is utilized to mine data obtained from electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) scans in order to extract correlations in physical characteristics that cause twinning. The results are intended to inform physics-based models of twin nucleation and growth. A decision tree learning environment is selected to capture the relationships between microstructure and twin formation; this type of model effectively highlights the more influential characteristics of the local microstructure. Trees are assembled to analyze both twin nucleation in a given grain, and twin propagation across grain boundaries. Each …

Monolayer Mos2 Bandgap Modulation By Dielectric Environments And Tunable Bandgap Transistors, Junga Ryou, Yong-Sung Kim, Santosh Kc, Kyeongjae Cho Jul 2016

Monolayer Mos2 Bandgap Modulation By Dielectric Environments And Tunable Bandgap Transistors, Junga Ryou, Yong-Sung Kim, Santosh Kc, Kyeongjae Cho

Faculty Publications

Semiconductors with a moderate bandgap have enabled modern electronic device technology, and the current scaling trends down to nanometer scale have introduced two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. The bandgap of a semiconductor has been an intrinsic property independent of the environments and determined fundamental semiconductor device characteristics. In contrast to bulk semiconductors, we demonstrate that an atomically thin two-dimensional semiconductor has a bandgap with strong dependence on dielectric environments. Specifically, monolayer MoS2 bandgap is shown to change from 2.8 eV to 1.9 eV by dielectric environment. Utilizing the bandgap modulation property, a tunable bandgap transistor, which can be in general made of …

Attending To Scientific Practices Within Undergraduate Research Experiences, Gina Quan, Chandra Turpen, Andrew Elby Jul 2016

Attending To Scientific Practices Within Undergraduate Research Experiences, Gina Quan, Chandra Turpen, Andrew Elby

Faculty Publications

Ford (2015) argues for viewing “scientific practice” not as a list of particular skills, but rather, more holistically as “sets of regularities of behaviors and social interactions” among scientists. This conceptualization of scientific practices foregrounds how they meaningfully connect to one another and are purposefully employed in order to explain nature. We apply this framework in the context of undergraduate research experiences (UREs) to understand the early forms of student engagement in scientific practices, and how these specific forms of engagement may be consequential for students’ future participation. Using video from interviews with students and research mentors, we argue that …

Diseases resulting from prolonged smoking are the most common preventable causes of death in the world today. In this report we investigate the success of utilizing accelerometer sensors in smart watches to identify smoking gestures. Early identification of smoking gestures can help to initiate the appropriate intervention method and prevent relapses in smoking. Our experiments indicate 85%-95% success rates in identification of smoking gesture among other similar gestures using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Our investigations concluded that information obtained from the x-dimension of accelerometers is the best means of identifying the smoking gesture, while y and z dimensions are helpful …

Comparison Of Airfoil Precomputational Analysis Methods For Optimization Of Wind Turbine Blades, Ryan Barrett, Andrew Ning Jul 2016

Comparison Of Airfoil Precomputational Analysis Methods For Optimization Of Wind Turbine Blades, Ryan Barrett, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to develop and compare various airfoil precomputational parameterization and analysis techniques for aerostructural optimization of wind turbine blades. The airfoils along the blade were added as optimization design variables through pre-computational parameterization methods using thickness-to-chord ratios and blended airfoil family factors. The airfoils' aerodynamic performance was analyzed with three methods of increasing fidelity: a panel method (XFOIL), Navier-Stokes based computational fluid dynamics (RANS CFD), and wind tunnel data. The optimizations minimized mass over annual energy production (m/AEP) and thereby approximated the minimization of cost of energy. The results were compared to the NREL 5-MW …

Nitrogen Rate And Landscape Impacts On Life Cycle Energy Use And Emissions From Switchgrass-Derived Ethanol, Eric G. Mbonimpa, Sandeep Kumar, Vance N. Owens, Rajesh Chintala, Heidi L. Sieverding, James J. Stone

Faculty Publications

Switchgrass-derived ethanol has been proposed as an alternative to fossil fuels to improve sustainability of the US energy sector. In this study, life cycle analysis (LCA) was used to estimate the environmental benefits of this fuel. To better define the LCA environmental impacts associated with fertilization rates and farm-landscape topography, results from a controlled experiment were analyzed. Data from switchgrass plots planted in 2008, consistently managed with three nitrogen rates (0, 56, and 112 kg N ha−1), two landscape positions (shoulder and footslope), and harvested annually (starting in 2009, the year after planting) through 2014 were used as input into …

Wartime Construction Project Outcomes As A Function Of Contract Type, Ryan M. Hoff, Gregory D. Hammond, Peter P. Feng, Edward D. White

Faculty Publications

The United States has spent more than $23 billion on construction in Afghanistan since 2001. The dynamic security situation created substantial project uncertainty, and many construction projects used cost-plus-fixed-fee contracts (CPFF) instead of the firm-fixed-price (FFP) norm. Using a dataset of 25 wartime construction projects managed by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the authors sought to confirm that both contract types yield project outcomes consistent with the established literature. As expected, they found CPFF contracts had greater cost and schedule growth than FFP. However, they did not find differences regarding as-built quality. Additionally, the authors sought to determine whether …

An Advanced Tabu Search Approach To The Dynamic Airlift Loading Problem, August G. Roesener, J. Wesley Barnes Jun 2016

An Advanced Tabu Search Approach To The Dynamic Airlift Loading Problem, August G. Roesener, J. Wesley Barnes

Faculty Publications

This research effort presents a tabu search algorithm to solve the dynamic airlift loading problem. Given a set of palletized cargo items which require transportation from an aerial port of embarkation to an aerial port of debarkation within a pre-specified time frame, the dynamic airlift loading problem seeks to partition the pallets into aircraft loads, select an efficient and effective subset of aircraft from available aircraft, and assign the pallets to allowable positions on those aircraft. The dynamic airlift loading problem differs from many partitioning and packing problems described in the literature because, in addition to spatial constraints, factors such …

The purpose of this work was to investigate the validity of Arrhenius accelerated-life testing when applied to gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) lifetime assessments, where the standard assumption is that only critical stressor is temperature, which is derived from operating power, device channel-case, thermal resistance, and baseplate temperature. We found that power or temperature alone could not explain difference in observed degradation, and that accelerated life tests employed by industry can benefit by considering the impact of accelerating factors besides temperature. Specifically, we found that the voltage used to reach a desired power dissipation is important, and …

High-fidelity and computationally efficient energy forecasting models for building systems are needed to ensure optimal automatic operation, reduce energy consumption, and improve the building’s resilience capability to power disturbances. Various models have been developed to forecast building energy consumption. However, given buildings have different characteristics and operating conditions, model performance varies. Existing research has mainly taken a trial-and-error approach by developing multiple models and identifying the best performer for a specific building, or presumed one universal model form which is applied on different building cases. To the best of our knowledge, there does not exist a generalized system framework which …

Cushioned Extended-Periphery Avoidance: A Reactive Obstacle Avoidance Plugin, Timothy Mclain, James Jackson, David Wheeler

Faculty Publications

While collision avoidance and flight stability are generally a micro air vehicle’s (MAVs) highest priority, many map-based path planning algorithms focus on path optimality, often assuming a static, known environment. For many MAV applications a robust navigation solution requires responding quickly to obstacles in dynamic, tight environments with non- negligible disturbances. This article first outlines the Reactive Obstacle Avoidance Plugin framework as a method for leveraging map-based algorithms while providing low-latency, high-bandwidth response to obstacles. Further, we propose and demonstrate the effectiveness of the Cushioned Extended- Periphery Avoidance (CEPA) algorithm. By representing recent laser scans in the current body-fixed polar …
