Potential Benefits Of Combining Anomaly Detection With View Planning For Uav Infrastructure Modeling, R. Abraham Martin, Landen Blackburn, Joshua Pulsipher, Kevin W. Franke, John Hedengren

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a novel method for UAV-based 3D modeling of large infrastructure objects, such as pipelines, canals and levees, that combines anomaly detection with automatic on-board 3D view planning. The study begins by assuming that anomaly detections are possible and focuses on quantifying the potential benefits of the combined method and the view planning algorithm. A simulated canal environment is constructed, and several simulated anomalies are created and marked. The algorithm is used to plan inspection flights for the anomaly locations, and simulated images from the flights are rendered and processed to construct 3D models of the locations of …

Surface Acoustic Wave Based Pumping In A Microchannel, Tao Wang, Qi Ni, Nathan B. Crane, Rasim Guldiken May 2017

Surface Acoustic Wave Based Pumping In A Microchannel, Tao Wang, Qi Ni, Nathan B. Crane, Rasim Guldiken

Faculty Publications

Pumping and manipulation of liquids in microfluidic channels is important for many mechanical, chemical and biomedical applications. Surface acoustic wave based devices fabricated on high-efficiency piezoelectric substrates have been recently investigated for mixing and separation application within microfluidic channels. In this paper, we introduce a novel integrated surface acoustic wave based pump for liquid delivery and precise manipulation within a microchannel. The device employs a hydrophobic surface coating (Cytop) in the device design for decreasing the friction force and increasing the bonding. Contrary to previous surface acoustic wave based pump, this device does not need precise layers of water and …

Optimization Under Uncertainty For Wake Steering Strategies, Julian Quick, Jennifer Annoni, Ryan King, Katherine Dykes, Paul Fleming, Andrew Ning May 2017

Optimization Under Uncertainty For Wake Steering Strategies, Julian Quick, Jennifer Annoni, Ryan King, Katherine Dykes, Paul Fleming, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Wind turbines in a wind power plant experience significant power losses because of aerodynamic interactions between turbines. One control strategy to reduce these losses is known as 'wake steering,' in which upstream turbines are yawed to direct wakes away from downstream turbines. Previous wake steering research has assumed perfect information, however, there can be significant uncertainty in many aspects of the problem, including wind inflow and various turbine measurements. Uncertainty has significant implications for performance of wake steering strategies. Consequently, the authors formulate and solve an optimization under uncertainty (OUU) problem for finding optimal wake steering strategies in the presence …

Engaging Children In Engineering Design Through The World Of Quadcopters, Greg J. Strimel, Scott R. Bartholomew, Eunhye Kim May 2017

Engaging Children In Engineering Design Through The World Of Quadcopters, Greg J. Strimel, Scott R. Bartholomew, Eunhye Kim

Faculty Publications

The interest in engineering education for K-12 students has been rising (Carr, Bennett IV, & Strobel, 2012; Strimel, Grubbs, & Wells, 2016), and the importance of engineering education is discussed as early as the elementary school level (Hegedus, 2014). Petroski (2003) claims that children are ready to learn engineering because their play activities are similar to engineering and design activities, such as making, moving, and rearranging things. Studies have examined how elementary school students perceive engineering or engineers (Cunningham, Lachapelle, & Lindgren-Streicher 2005) and found that elementary-aged students associated engineering with repairing, installing, driving, constructing, and improving machines and devices. …

Designing The Technological World Through Biomimicry, Emily Yoshikawa, Greg J. Strimel, Scott R. Bartholomew

Faculty Publications

Scientific discoveries are a driver for advancing our technological world (ITEA/ITEEA; 2000/2002/2007). As more knowledge is acquired through scientific inquiry, people can better design and develop technological inventions and innovations (Knowles, Kelley, & Hurd, 2016). In turn, these novel technologies can aid in making new scientific discoveries, thus driving an ongoing cycle of technological advancement. However, in the process of designing and advancing our technological world, people can turn to the study of life and its phenomena to inspire and inform their designs. Nature is functional as well as beautiful. As we study the phenomena or functions of living organisms …

Probing The Effects Of Surface Hydrophobicity And Tether Orientation On Antibody-Antigen Binding, Derek B. Bush, Thomas A. Knotts Iv Apr 2017

Probing The Effects Of Surface Hydrophobicity And Tether Orientation On Antibody-Antigen Binding, Derek B. Bush, Thomas A. Knotts Iv

Faculty Publications

Antibody microarrays have the potential to revolutionize molecular detection for many applications, but their current use is limited by poor reliability, and efforts to change this have not yielded fruitful results. One difficulty which limits the rational engineering of next-generation devices is that little is known, at the molecular level, about the antibody-antigen binding process near solid surfaces. Atomic-level structural information is scant because typical experimental techniques (X-ray crystallography and NMR) cannot be used to image proteins bound to surfaces. To overcome this limitation, this study uses molecular simulation and an advanced, experimentally validated, coarse-grain, protein-surface model to compare fab-lysozyme …

Antiferromagnetism In The Van Der Waals Layered Spin-Lozenge Semiconductor Crte3, Michael Mcguire, V. Ovidiu Garlea, Santosh Kc, Valentino Cooper, Jiaqiang Yan, Huibo Cao, Brian Sales

Faculty Publications

The crystallographic, magnetic, and transport properties of the van der Waals bonded, layered compound CrTe3 have been investigated on single-crystal and polycrystalline materials. The crystal structure contains layers made up of lozenge-shaped Cr4 tetramers. Electrical resistivity measurements show the crystals to be semiconducting, with a temperature dependence consistent with a band gap of 0.3 eV. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad maximum near 300 K characteristic of low dimensional magnetic systems. Weak anomalies are observed in the susceptibility and heat capacity near 55 K, and single-crystal neutron diffraction reveals the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order at this temperature. Strongly dispersive …

Thermal Characterization Of Natural And Synthetic Spider Silks By Both The 3Ω And Transient Electrothermal Methods, Troy Munro, Changhu Xing, Heng Ban, Cameron G. Copeland, Randolph V. Lewis, Colby Jensen

Faculty Publications

Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity of three spider silks are measured in this paper as a benchmark for further studies. These silks include the major and minor ampullate silks of the Nephila clavipes spider, and a synthetic spider silk fiber made from recombinant dragline silk proteins purified from transgenic goats’ milk. Two complementary measurement techniques are employed in the thermal characterization of these microscale single fibers for self-verification. One is the transient electrothermal technique (TET) and the other is the 3ω method. Experimental measurements indicate that thermal properties of the dragline silk are very close to those …

Investigation Of Synthetic Spider Silk Crystallinity And Alignment Via Electrothermal, Pyroelectric, Literature Xrd, And Tensile Techniques, Troy Munro, Tristan Putzeys, Michael Wubbenhorst, Christ Glorieux, Cameron G. Copeland, Randolph V. Lewis, Changhu Xing, Heng Ban Apr 2017

Investigation Of Synthetic Spider Silk Crystallinity And Alignment Via Electrothermal, Pyroelectric, Literature Xrd, And Tensile Techniques, Troy Munro, Tristan Putzeys, Michael Wubbenhorst, Christ Glorieux, Cameron G. Copeland, Randolph V. Lewis, Changhu Xing, Heng Ban

Faculty Publications

The processes used to create synthetic spider silk greatly affect the properties of the produced fibers. This paper investigates the effect of process variations during artificial spinning on the thermal and mechanical properties of the produced silk. Property values are also compared to the ones of the natural dragline silk of the N. clavipes spider, and to unprocessed (as-spun) synthetic silk. Structural characterization by scanning pyroelectric microscopy is employed to provide insight into the axial orientation of the crystalline regions of the fiber and is supported by XRD data. The results show that stretching and passage through liquid baths induce …

An Approach To Robust Homing With Stereovision, Fuqiang Fu, Damian Lyons Apr 2017

An Approach To Robust Homing With Stereovision, Fuqiang Fu, Damian Lyons

Faculty Publications

Visual Homing is a bioinspired approach to robot navigation which can be fast and uses few assumptions. However, visual homing in a cluttered and unstructured outdoor environment offers several challenges to homing methods that have been developed for primarily indoor environments. One issue is that any current image during homing may be tilted with respect to the home image. The second is that moving through a cluttered scene during homing may cause obstacles to interfere between the home scene and location and the current scene and location. In this paper, we introduce a robust method to improve a previous developed …

Biotemplating Pores With Size And Shape Diversity For Li-Oxygen Battery Cathodes, Dahyun Oh, Cagla Ozgit-Akgun, Esin Akca, Leslie Thompson, Loza Tadesse, Ho-Cheol Kim, Gökhan Demirci, Robert Miller

Faculty Publications

Synthetic porogens provide an easy way to create porous structures, but their usage is limited due to synthetic difficulties, process complexities and prohibitive costs. Here we investigate the use of bacteria, sustainable and naturally abundant materials, as a pore template. The bacteria require no chemical synthesis, come in variable sizes and shapes, degrade easier and are approximately a million times cheaper than conventional porogens. We fabricate free standing porous multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films using cultured, harmless bacteria as porogens, and demonstrate substantial Li-oxygen battery performance improvement by porosity control. Pore volume as well as shape in the cathodes were …

Multi-Valued Sequences Generated By Power Residue Symbols Over Odd Characteristic Fields, Begum Nasima, Yasuyuki Nogami, Satoshi Uehara, Robert Morelos-Zaragoza Apr 2017

Multi-Valued Sequences Generated By Power Residue Symbols Over Odd Characteristic Fields, Begum Nasima, Yasuyuki Nogami, Satoshi Uehara, Robert Morelos-Zaragoza

Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a new approach for generating pseudo random multi-valued (including binary-valued) sequences. The approach uses a primitive polynomial over an odd characteristic prime field $\f{p}$, where p is an odd prime number. Then, for the maximum length sequence of vectors generated by the primitive polynomial, the trace function is used for mapping these vectors to scalars as elements in the prime field. Power residue symbol (Legendre symbol in binary case) is applied to translate the scalars to k-value scalars, where k is a prime factor of p-1. Finally, a pseudo random k-value sequence is obtained. Some important properties …

CO2 capture and utilization caused more and more public attention because of its environmental impact. The objective of this work was to study the catalytic gasification of a sub-bituminous coal from the Powder River Basin (PRB) using a CO2 and H2 O mixture as the gasifying agent. Sodium and iron, in the form of inexpensive compounds, were chosen to catalyze the coal gasification. The experiments were conducted between 700 and 900 °C in a fixed-bed laboratory gasifier under the atmospheric pressure. Results show that the added catalysts had an effect on the composition of gas …

A Multi-Fluid Model For Microstructure Formation In Polymer Membranes, Douglas R. Tree, Kris T. Delaney, Hector D. Ceniceros, Tatsuhiro Iwama, Glenn H. Fredrickson

Faculty Publications

We develop a multi-fluid model for a ternary polymer solution using the Rayleighian formalism of Doi and Onuki, and give an efficient pseudo-spectral method for solving both the diffusion and momentum equations that result. Subsequently, we find that the numerical simulation is capable of describing systems at the micron length-scale and easily reaches millisecond time-scales. In addition, we characterize the model thermodynamics and kinetics including the (i) phase behavior, (ii) structure of the interfaces, (iii) mutual diffusion coefficients, (iv) bulk spinodal decomposition kinetics with and without hydrodynamics and (v) spinodal decomposition in the presence of an interface with a non-solvent …

Analysis Of An Upper Bound On The Effects Of Large Scale Attenuation On Uplink Transmission Performance For Massive Mimo Systems, Liu Liu, David W. Matolak, Cheng Tao, Yongzhi Li Mar 2017

Analysis Of An Upper Bound On The Effects Of Large Scale Attenuation On Uplink Transmission Performance For Massive Mimo Systems, Liu Liu, David W. Matolak, Cheng Tao, Yongzhi Li

Faculty Publications

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a potential candidate key technology for the 5G of wireless communication systems. In research to date, different power loss and shadowing effects on different antenna elements across the large arrays have been neglected. In this paper, based on an idealized propagation model, a new large scale attenuation (LSA) model is proposed, by which the large scale losses (path loss and shadowing effect) over the antenna array can be considered when establishing a massive MIMO channel model. By using this model, the spectral efficiency (in terms of bits/s/Hz sum-rate) of the maximum ratio combining (MRC) detector …

Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop In Superhydrophobic Channels, Kimberly A. Stevens, Julie Crockett, Daniel R. Maynes, Brian D. Iverson Mar 2017

Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop In Superhydrophobic Channels, Kimberly A. Stevens, Julie Crockett, Daniel R. Maynes, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

Superhydrophobic surfaces have been shown to reduce drag in single-phase channel flow; however, little work has been done to characterize their drag-reducing ability found in two-phase flows. Adiabatic, airwater mixtures were used to explore the influence of hydrophobicity on two-phase flows and the hydrodynamics which might be present in flow condensation environments. Pressure drop measurements in a rectangular channel with one superhydrophobic wall (cross-section approximately 0.37 x 10 mm) and three transparent hydrophilic walls were obtained. Data for air/water mixtures with superficial Reynolds numbers ranging from 22–215 and 55–220, respectively, were obtained for superhydrophobic surfaces with three different cavity fractions. …

Influence Of Noise Generating Factors On Cross Correlation Ebsd Measurement Of Gnds, David T. Fullwood, Landon Hansen, Brian Jackson, Stewart I. Wright, Marc De Graef, Eric Richards Homer, Robert Wagoner Mar 2017

Influence Of Noise Generating Factors On Cross Correlation Ebsd Measurement Of Gnds, David T. Fullwood, Landon Hansen, Brian Jackson, Stewart I. Wright, Marc De Graef, Eric Richards Homer, Robert Wagoner

Faculty Publications

Studies of dislocation density evolution are fundamental to improved understanding in various areas of deformation mechanics. Recent advances in cross-correlation techniques, applied to EBSD data have particularly shed light on geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) behavior. However, the framework is relatively computationally expensive – patterns are typically saved from the EBSD scan and analyzed offline. A better understanding of the impact of EBSD pattern degradation, such as binning, compression, and various forms of noise, is vital to enable optimization of rapid and low cost GND analysis. This paper tackles the problem by setting up a set of simulated patterns that mimic …

Helical Gear Design For Bending Fatigue, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor Mar 2017

Helical Gear Design For Bending Fatigue, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor

Faculty Publications

A bending stress capacity model explicit in the representation of helical gear design parameters is developed. The model accounts for the bending stresses from both tangential and axial loads on the gear tooth as well as the direct shear stresses from these loads. A shear stress concentration factor is incorporated to account for the geometric influence of the fillet at the root of the gear. The model clearly reveals the direct influence of the base helix angle on the bending stress and normal module size estimates. Several design examples of bending stress estimates from different references are computed using the …

Predictive Modeling Of A Buoyancy-Operated Cooling Tower Under Saturated Conditions - I: Adjoint Sensitivity Model, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Federico Di Rocco Mar 2017

Predictive Modeling Of A Buoyancy-Operated Cooling Tower Under Saturated Conditions - I: Adjoint Sensitivity Model, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Federico Di Rocco

Faculty Publications

A cooling tower discharges waste heat produced by an industrial plant to the external environment. The amount of thermal energy discharged into the environment can be determined by measurements of quantities representing the external conditions, such as outlet air temperature, outlet water temperature, and outlet air relative humidity, in conjunction with computational models that simulate numerically the cooling tower's behavior. Variations in the model's parameters (e.g., material properties, model correlations, boundary conditions) cause variations in the model's response. The functional derivatives of the model response with respect to the model parameters (called "sensitivities") are needed to quantify such response variations …

Binder-Jet Printing Of Fine Stainless Steel Powder With Varied Final Density, Mohsen Ziaee, Eric M. Tridas, Nathan B. Crane Mar 2017

Binder-Jet Printing Of Fine Stainless Steel Powder With Varied Final Density, Mohsen Ziaee, Eric M. Tridas, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Binder jetting is an additive manufacturing process that produces relatively weak porous parts that are strengthened through sintering and/or infiltration. This paper reports on two different methods of preparing fine 316 stainless steel powder and their impact on the final sintered density and dimensions relative to direct printing into -22 micron powder. The first method uses agglomerates of fine powder. In the second, nylon 12 powders are mixed with the steel powder as a fugitive space holder to increase porosity. Sintered density and sintering shrinkage of agglomerate material are shown to vary with the density of the spread powder bed. …

Defect-Related Optical Absorption Bands In Cdsip2 Crystals, Elizabeth M. Scherrer, Brant T. Kananen, Eric M. Golden, F. Kenneth Hopkins, Kevin T. Zawilski, Peter G. Schunemann, Larry E. Halliburton, Nancy C. Giles Mar 2017

Defect-Related Optical Absorption Bands In Cdsip2 Crystals, Elizabeth M. Scherrer, Brant T. Kananen, Eric M. Golden, F. Kenneth Hopkins, Kevin T. Zawilski, Peter G. Schunemann, Larry E. Halliburton, Nancy C. Giles

Faculty Publications

When used as optical parametric oscillators, CdSiP2 crystals generate tunable output in the mid-infrared. Their performance, however, is often limited by unwanted optical absorption bands that overlap the pump wavelengths. A broad defect-related optical absorption band peaking near 800 nm, with a shoulder near 1 µm, can be photoinduced at room temperature in many CdSiP2 crystals. This absorption band is efficiently produced with 633 nm laser light and decays with a lifetime of ∼0.5 s after removal of the excitation light. The 800 nm band is accompanied by a less intense absorption band peaking near 1.90 µm. Data …

Analysis Of Co-Associated Transcription Factors Via Ordered Adjacency Differences On Motif Distribution, Gaofeng Pan, Jijun Tang, Fei Guo Feb 2017

Analysis Of Co-Associated Transcription Factors Via Ordered Adjacency Differences On Motif Distribution, Gaofeng Pan, Jijun Tang, Fei Guo

Faculty Publications

Transcription factors (TFs) binding to specific DNA sequences or motifs, are elementary to the regulation of transcription. The gene is regulated by a combination of TFs in close proximity. Analysis of co-TFs is an important problem in understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation. Recently, ChIP-seq in mapping TF provides a large amount of experimental data to analyze co-TFs. Several studies show that if two TFs are co-associated, the relative distance between TFs exhibits a peak-like distribution. In order to analyze co-TFs, we develop a novel method to evaluate the associated situation between TFs. We design an adjacency score based on …

Application Of The Rotating Cylinder Electrode In Molten Licl-Kcl Eutectic Containing Uranium(Iii)- And Magnesium(Ii)-Chloride, Devin Rappleye, Michael F. Simpson Feb 2017

Application Of The Rotating Cylinder Electrode In Molten Licl-Kcl Eutectic Containing Uranium(Iii)- And Magnesium(Ii)-Chloride, Devin Rappleye, Michael F. Simpson

Faculty Publications

The application of the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) to molten LiCl-KCl eutectic mixtures for electroanalytical measurements is presented. This enabled the measurement of the limiting current which was observed to follow a linear trend with the rotational rate raised to 0.64–0.65 power on average, which closely agrees with existing RCE mass-transfer correlations. This is the first publication of electroanalytical RCE measurements in LiCl-KCl eutectic based molten salt mixtures, to our knowledge. These measurements were made in mixtures of molten LiCl-KCl eutectic containing UCl3 and MgCl2. Kinetic parameters were calculated for Mg2+ in LiCl-KCl eutectic. The exchange …

Examination Of The Effect Of Differential Molecular Diffusion In Dns Of Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames, Chao Han, David O. Lignell, Evatt R. Hawkes, Jacqueline H. Chen, Haifeng Wang

Faculty Publications

The effect of differential molecular diffusion (DMD) in turbulent non-premixed flames is studied by examining two previously reported DNS of temporally evolving planar jet flames, one with CO/H2 as the fuel and the other with C2H4 as the fuel. The effect of DMD in the CO/H2 DNS flames in which H2 is part of fuel is found to behave similar to laminar flamelet, while in the C2H4 DNS flames in which H2 is not present in the fuel it is similar to laminar flamelet in early stages but becomes different from laminar flamelet later. The scaling of the effect …

Analysis Of Rigid Extended Object Co-Manipulation By Human Dyads: Lateral Movement Characterization, Erich Mielke, Eric Townsend, Marc D. Killpack Feb 2017

Analysis Of Rigid Extended Object Co-Manipulation By Human Dyads: Lateral Movement Characterization, Erich Mielke, Eric Townsend, Marc D. Killpack

Faculty Publications

During co-manipulation involving humans and robots, it is necessary to base robot controllers on human behaviors to achieve comfortable and coordinated movement between the human-robot dyad. In this paper, we describe an experiment between human-human dyads and we record the force and motion data as the leader-follower dyads moved in translation and rotation. The force/motion data was then analyzed for patterns found during lateral translation only. For extended objects, lateral translation and in-place rotation are ambiguous, but this paper determines a way to characterize lateral translation triggers for future use in human-robot interaction. The study has 4 main results. First, …

Contact Fatigue Design Of Helical Gear By Spur Gear Equivalency, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor Feb 2017

Contact Fatigue Design Of Helical Gear By Spur Gear Equivalency, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor

Faculty Publications

Contact fatigue failure or pitting is a common mode of gear failure. High speed gearing is therefore prone to pitting and scoring failure modes. A simplified contact stress capacity model that is explicit in the representation of helical gear design parameters is developed. The model gives estimate of the contact stress expected in a helical gearset during meshing. Also, the model clearly reveals the direct influence of the base helix angle on contact stress and normal module size estimates. Contact stresses for five design Examples from different references are computed using the new contact stress capacity model and compared with …
