The objective of this research project is to evaluate the efficiency of traditional chemical tracing compared to dual-viral tracing for labeling long ascending propriospinal neurons (LAPNs) in the uninjured rat spinal cord, and to develop a MATLAB program which will accurately quantify this labeling.

To evaluate chemical tracing, Fluoro-Ruby (FR) was injected at the level of the axon terminals, and the number of ipsilateral labeled cell bodies at lumbar level was quantified. Similarly, two dual-viral systems were evaluated, by either injecting retro-AAV-Cre or HiRet-Lenti-Cre unilaterally in combination with a Cre-dependent adeno-associated virus. During coal-fired electric power production, coal bound elemental selenium is released into the gas phase and oxidized to selenite and selenate in the wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) unit. Selenite and selenate solubilize in the WFGD process water. A process water system at a coal fired power plant contributes to environmental regulation compliance by removing the selenium species from WFGD process water. This thesis investigates how additive manufacturing (AM) based on-demand part production can supplement or replace the traditional production and inventory in typical aerospace’s spare parts supply chain systems. This study focuses on the operational characteristics of AM and its impacts on the overall logistics of plant-level operations. The objective of this thesis is to develop a mathematical model characterizing the behavior of a microfluidic sonoporation device in order to understand how standing wave conditions influence molecular delivery to cells and determine whether the model predicts device performance. A prior model based on an ultrasonic separation cell that uses standing waves to separate particles is adapted for translation to the microfluidic device. In the field of magnetocaloric heat pumps much research has been performed around machine design and theoretical machines, but little has been researched around practical problems such as variability in material properties. The present work defines a simulation tool that has been proven with experimental data. Magnetocaloric material cascades were statistically analyzed and parameterized, such that they could be recreated parametrically using a split Lorentz function with normally distributed parameters. Achieving homogeneous dispersion of the graphene platelets within a polymeric network is critical to realizing these enhancements. Enhanced signal sensitivity by the use of Rapid Scan (RS) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), a technique that allows for much faster magnetic field scans than traditional field-swept techniques, has facilitated improved data acquisition for many types of samples. For example, irradiated fingernails for radiation dosimetry have been studied using RS-EPR, which resulted in substantial decreases in detection limits. This Ph.D. dissertation focuses on studying the feasibility and effectiveness of using a social robot, called NAO, and a toy music instrument, xylophone, at modeling and improving the social responses and behaviors of children with ASD.
