Current pathways and reconstructions of human injury after contact with distribution powerlines are not well understood. The impedance, currents, and modes of tissue destruction are rarely known. Eight anesthetized hogs, weighing 68 to 90 kg, were used in studies with potentials ranging from 2,100 to 14,400 volts. Electrical contact was made between the hindlimbs, from the hindlimb to forelimb, and over other regions of the body. Currents from 4 to 70 amperes rms and impedances ranging from 130 to 477 ohms were measured. Phase angles up to 40° were observed. Copyright © 1981 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics …

Mti Improvement Factors For Weighted Dfts, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to enhance the detection of moving targets in ground clutter is examined. The improvement factor, defined as the signal-to-clutter ratio at the DFT processor output compared with that of the input, is given as a function of normalized clutter spectral width for various weighting functions on the DFT input. The effect of quantization of the weights on the improvement factor is also examined. Copyright © 1980 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Surface Electromagnetic Wave Field Strength Measurements On Railroad Tracks, Brian C.H. Lai, Brian C.H. Lai, Charles A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports an experimental investigation of surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) energy distribution on railroad tracks. Radial field distribution of SEW on 112-lb/yd rails were examined utilizing a dipole diode detector. Laboratory and on-site measurements were made. The field strength distribution data at frequencies 3.000, 6.000, and 9.733 GHz show that the main part of the SEW TE mode energy (almost 90 percent) is on the head of the rail. Use of dielectric augmentation on the side of rails resulted in lower attenuation of the propagating SEW. Thick dielectric strip augmentation data shows enhancement of SEW propagation in agreement with …

Solar-Cell Design Based On A Distributed Diode Analysis, Jack L. Boone, Thomas P. Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The front surface of a p-n junction solar cell has resistive losses associated with the diffused layer, the metal-semiconductor contact, and the grid structure. These losses are analyzed by considering the spatially distributed nature of the p-n junction and the grid conductors. This distributed diode analysis is especially useful for solar cells operated under concentrated sunlight conditions. The results show the dependence of the V-I characteristics and the maximum power output per unit cell on the ratio of the diffused layer resistance to the junction dynamic resistance. This ratio can assist the designer in establishing proper grid structure geometries and …

Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The measurement of vehicle magnetic moments and the results from use of a fluxgate magnetic sensor to actuate a lighting system from the magnetic fields of passing vehicles is reported. A typical U.S. automobile has a magnetic moment of about 200 A-m2(Ampere-meters2), while for a school bus it is about 2000 A-m2. When the vehicle is modeled as an ideal magnetic dipole with a moment of 200 A-m2, the predicted results from an analysis of the sensor-vehicle geometry agree closely with observations of the system response to automobiles. This Paper is Concerned with Computation of the Attenuation Coefficient of Internal Acoustic-Gravity Waves in a Slightly Dissipative Horizontally Stratified Atmosphere. Two Models Are Generally Used in Deriving This Attenuation Coefficient. in One Model, the Nonlinear Hydrodynamic Equations Are Analyzed by using a Stokes Expansion and the WKB Solutions to the Linearized Perturbations Are Sought by using the Coupled Mode Formulation. in the Second Model, the Attenuation is Viewed as the Dissipation of Pseudo energy. We Show in This Paper that in a Slightly Dissipative Atmosphere, These Two Models Give Identical Results as Far as Computation of the Attenuation Coefficient …

Using An Inverter To Measure Magnetic Fields, Stanley V. Marshall Jan 1977

Using An Inverter To Measure Magnetic Fields, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A toroidal core may be used with an inverter circuit to measure magnetic fields in the 0.8 to 80,000 A/m (.01 to 1.0 KOe) range. The sensor core may be the inverter transformer itself or may be coupled to a Non saturating inverter transformer. The sensor is most sensitive to fields parallel to the plane of the sensor and the sensitivity is greatest for a core biased to near saturation. An empirical expression for the demagnetization factor is used in calculating the ambient field required to saturate the sensor core, making it possible to calculate the range of fields for …

Probability Of Anomaly Expressions For Random Waveform Registration, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1977

Probability Of Anomaly Expressions For Random Waveform Registration, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Registration by integral-square error correlation of one-dimensional Discrete Time waveforms which are treated as random processes with specified autocorrelation functions is considered. An important design parameter for this class of problems is the probability of anomaly (a false dip in the correlation function) because it gives an indication of system immunity to gross registration errors. Explicit expressions for this parameter are not possible, so bounds and approximations must be derived. Two upper bounds and an approximation for the probability of anomaly are derived here. The use of these expressions is illustrated by an example. The relative utility of these performance …

Improving Qpsk Transmission In Band-Limited Channels With Interchannel Interference Through Equalization, S. H.R. Raghavan, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the use of equalization in conjunction with channel filtering to improve QPSK transmission subject to both InterSymbol interference (ISI) and interchange interference (ICI). Performance bounds are computed using the nonclassical Gauss-quadrature rule (GQR) method. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain due to linear equalization over Non equalization is thereby obtained and presented. The performance of a linear equalizer thus obtained is compared with the Viterbi algorithm sequence estimator (VASE). In the absence of bounds for the VASE receiver under the channel conditions considered, simulation results are used to make the comparison. With a possible difference in the accuracies …

Detection In Image Dependent Noise, David R. Cunningham, Robert D. Laramore, Eamon Barrett Jan 1976

Detection In Image Dependent Noise, David R. Cunningham, Robert D. Laramore, Eamon Barrett

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The detection of two-dimensional optical signals which have been corrupted by noise is considered. Discussion is limited to the detection of a known object in a known location. The problem is approached from the classical statistical technique of hypothesis testing. Initially the solution is formulated in very general terms. The decision rule is derived for a signal distorted by noise of an unspecified type which may include signal dependent noise. Once the decision rule is obtained, the probabilities of false alarm and detection are evaluated from a priori knowledge of the noise and imaging system. The general results are applied …
