Horizon Profile Checkpoints For Low-Altitude Aircraft, Gordon E. Carlson, George L. Bair, Charles M. Benoit

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A technique for utilizing on-board sensed horizon profiles and computer stored reference horizon profiles to provide navigation check points for low-altitude aircraft is described. The technique has been analyzed using digitized terrain data and computer simulations to select the best method of horizon profile comparison, to determine horizon data density requirements, and to provide performance comparisons, system error limitations, and tradeoffs. Results of these analyses are shown to support feasibility conclusions and system parameter tradeoffs. Copyright © 1976 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Computer Analysis Of 3-Phase Induction Motor Operation On Rural Open-Delta Distribution Systems, Stephen C. Seematter, Earl F. Richards

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Open-delta/open-delta and open-wye/open-delta transformer banks are often used as an economic means of supplying simultaneous single-phase and 3-phase loads in rural areas. If the 3-phase load is an induction motor, the inherent voltage unbalance causes increased losses and uneven heating that may lead to motor failure. Often these motors are submersible or deep well pump motors located in remote unattended areas or air conditioning motors which may not have sufficient over-design to handle the voltage unbalance. The theory analyzing the open-delta distribution system has existed for many years, however, because of the tedious and almost infinite differences in distribution topology, …

This Paper Defines an M-Ary Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (MGLRT) that overcomes Root's Early Objection to the Application of Generalized Likelihood Ratio Testing to the Resolution of Correlated Signals. the Proposed Test Extends the Form of a Conventional Binary Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) in a Manner that Permits a Generalization of the Minimax Properties of the Binary Test to the M-Hypotheses Case. When the Estimated Signals Are Orthogonal, the Test Reduces to a Sequence of Conventional Binary Tests Duplicating the Performance of a Narrow-Band Matched Filter Envelope-Detector Receiver. © 1975, IEEE. Computer Modeling Of The Statistical Properties Of Transionospheric Scintillation Channels, W. F. Deckelman, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This concise paper shows that a bandlimited bivariate-normal time series is a useful model for the envelope of scintillating radio signals traversing the ionosphere. A software model is presented whose generated time series is compared to an actual block of scintillation data. A comparison of computer-generated and actual scintillation data shows that the fade-duration distribution of the simulated data fits that of the actual data closely through proper choice of model parameters. The Effective Autocorrelation Function Of Maximum Entropy Spectra, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The technique and the relative advantages of maximum entropy spectrum analysis have been discussed by Burg [1], [2]. Evaluation of the inverse Fourier transform of the maximum entropy spectrum shows that this method does, indeed, correspond to a reasonable nonzero extension of the autocorrelation function.

This correspondence describes a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL) for specifying the terminal behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. The language is a valuable tool for formalizing and documenting asynchronous designs, as well as providing a user interface to a completely automated synthesis system. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior and is best suited for problems that are currently being described informally by word statements. Equalization Of Qpsk Data Transmission In Specular Multipath, Rodger E. Ziemer, C. R. Ryan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper gives performance results for transversal-filter equalization of Quadri phase phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) signals with two-component multipath and demodulator phase error. An analytical expression for optimum, minimum mean-square-error tap weights in terms of the multipath and signal parameters is given. Probability of error results for no equalization and equalization with adaptive decision-feedback tap-weight adjustment are compared. The results show that significant improvement can be obtained with relatively simple equalizer structures. Copyright © 1974 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Hybrid Carrier And Modulation Tracking Loop Performance In Rfi, Rodger E. Ziemer, Donald R. Nelson Jan 1974

Hybrid Carrier And Modulation Tracking Loop Performance In Rfi, Rodger E. Ziemer, Donald R. Nelson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The operation of a hybrid Tracking (HT) phase-locked loop (PLL) in radio-frequency interference (RFI) is considered. Results from a perturbation analysis for the loop phase error in continuous-wave (CW) RFI are found to compare favorably with results obtained by digital computer simulation. These results, together with simulation results for wide-band (in comparison to the loop bandwidth) RFI, indicate that loop structures which track both on the signal carrier and modulation components are advantageous in RFI plus Gaussian noise backgrounds. Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1974

Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of three stereo radar techniques is compared with respect to both theoretical performance and performance in the presence of errors. The three techniques are: an improved single flight technique, a previously proposed single flight technique, and a two flight technique. Theoretical data for comparison of image parameters affecting performance have been generated with computer simulations of the imaging geometries for the techniques. The comparison shows that the improved technique will have images with greater similarity resulting in improved stereo viewability and measurability. Computer simulations have also been used to generate sensitivities of computed terrain point coordinates to system …

Generalized Feedback Shift Register Pseudorandom Number Algorithm, Theodore Gyle Lewis, W. H. Payne

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The generalized feedback shift register pseudorandom number algorithm has several advantages over all other pseudorandom number generators. These advantages are: (1) it produces multidimensional pseudorandom numbers; (2) it has an arbitrarily long period independent of the word size of the computer on which it is implemented; (3) it is faster than other pseudorandom number generators; (4) the "same" floating-point pseudorandom number sequence is obtained on any machine, that is, the high order mantissa bits of each pseudorandom number agree on all machines— examples are given for IBM 360, Sperry-Rand-Univac 1108, Control Data 6000, and Hewlett-Packard 2100 series computers; (5) it …

Tilt-Table Alignment For Inertial-Platform Maintenance Without A Surveyed Site, Gordon E. Carlson, Max E. Bott Jan 1973

Tilt-Table Alignment For Inertial-Platform Maintenance Without A Surveyed Site, Gordon E. Carlson, Max E. Bott

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for aligning the rotary tilt table for an inertial-platform maintenance facility without surveying the site is analyzed and evaluated. The method utilizes multiple measurements of the tilt-table azimuth alignment error with different inertial platforms to determine a best estimate of the alignment error. Error analysis indicates that useful facility performance can be obtained with only a small number of measurements. The tilt-table alignment accuracy can be improved as more measurements of the alignment error are made during normal facility operation. © 1973, IEEE. All rights reserved.

An Improved Single Flight Technique For Radar Stereo, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1973

An Improved Single Flight Technique For Radar Stereo, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved technique for obtaining stereo radar image pairs is described. The technique uses a unique combination of two different radar beam pattern characteristics. The resulting stereo radar images are illuminated from very nearly the same aircraft position which results in radar shadow and back-scatter characteristics which are very similar and in improved image registration possibilities. The reduction in illumination angle and aircraft position differences is shown to be nearly an order of magnitude or more when compared with a previously proposed single flight technique which used two vertical fan beam patterns at different azimuth angles. As a related sidelight …

Performance Degradation Due To Specular Multipath Intersymbol Interference, G. H. Smith, David R. Cunningham, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Plots of performance degradation are used to compare the effects of fading and intersymbol interference in a two-component specular multipath digital communications channel. Similar plots are then used to compare two practical receivers designed to combat the interference. Degradation plots are shown to allow easy identification of each receiver's range of usefulness, as well as identification of variance bounds demanded of channel parameter estimates which the receivers require. Microprogramming For Probability Distribution Sampling, Theodore Gyle Lewis Aug 1972

Microprogramming For Probability Distribution Sampling, Theodore Gyle Lewis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microprogramming of special instructions for sampling of random variates from any probability distribution is a means of increasing sampling speed. The diversity of sampling techniques is narrowed to one general algorithm: conditional bit sampling. Conditional bit sampling uses a high-speed uniform random number generator based on feedback shift registers to sample one bit at a time. The probability of a bit being a one in the j-th position of a binary expanded variate is stored in a table of conditional probabilities. A comparison with the pseudorandom number yields a one or zero. The table of conditional probabilities is generated once …

A State-Space Approach To Rlct Two-Port Transfer-Function Synthesis, Eddie R. Fowler, Rao Yarlagadda Jan 1972

A State-Space Approach To Rlct Two-Port Transfer-Function Synthesis, Eddie R. Fowler, Rao Yarlagadda

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an interesting procedure for the synthesis of an RLCT two-part transfer function. An RLC ladder, consisting of n reactive elements and two resistors, is derived by using a tridiagonal matrix developed by Navot. The entries in this matrix are expressed in terms of the element values of the ladder network. Two voltage drivers are introduced into the ladder network to obtain a desired short-circuit transfer-admittance function numerator degree, using the classical theorems on transmission zeros. If the numerator degree of the transfer function is i (i < n), then, in general, (i) ladder networks need to be derived. The final network, corresponding to this transfer function, is obtained by paralleling the ladder networks (with transformers if necessary). Extensions to general short-circuit transfer admittance, open-circuit transfer impedance, and voltage transfer functions are briefly discussed. © 1972, IEEE. All rights reserved.
