The growing reliance on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components for developing large-scale projects introduces a new paradigm in software Engineering; which requires the design of new software development and business processes. Large scale component reuse leads to savings in development resources, enabling these resources to be applied to areas such as quality improvement. These savings come at the price of integration difficulties, performance constraints, and incompatibility of components from multiple vendors. Relying on COTS components also increases the system''s vulnerability to risks arising from third-party development, which can negatively affect the quality of the system, as well as causing expenses not incurred …

Vias in differential transmission lines have been modeled using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The velocity that the differential signal propagated through the vias was estimated. Differential S-parameters were calculated up to 50 GHz. Below 10 GHz, the differential signal can propagate through vias without much reflection and distortion. However, as frequency increases, the reflection from the vias and the loss of differential power become significant.

Inspection and evaluation of cement-based materials such as concrete is of great interest to the construction industry. In particular, real-time and on-site evaluation of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) is an important practical issue, since the compressive strength of a concrete structure is significantly influenced by its w/c. Currently, there is no single real-time, on-site, relatively in-expensive, easy-to-implement, and operator friendly technique for evaluating this parameter. Microwave nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques have shown great promise when used for inspection and evaluation of the properties of cement-based materials. In this paper, the optimal design of a monopole antenna probe used to evaluate …

This paper uses data collected at Central and South West Services Fort Davis wind farm to develop a neural network based prediction of power produced by each turbine. The power generated by electric wind turbines changes rapidly because of the continuous fluctuation of wind speed and direction. It is important for the power industry to have the capability to perform this prediction for diagnostic purposes—lower-than-expected wind power may be an early indicator of a need for maintenance. In this paper, characteristics of wind power generation are first evaluated in order to establish the relative importance for the neural network. A …

This paper focuses on differential signal transmission above ground planes with gaps, taking into account the dielectric and conductive losses of the substrate. An equivalent lumped-circuit is proposed and its suitability is investigated by comparing the obtained numerical results with the measured data. Furthermore the differential to common mode conversion of the waves, while crossing the gap, is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified.

Segmented power planes are often used for DC power bus noise isolation in multi-layered printed circuit board (PCB) designs. To achieve a desirable noise isolation, different power plane segmentations can be used. A suitable modeling approach, as well as measurements, were employed to study the power bus isolation with several power plane segmentation configurations. The studied geometries included power island designs connected with a conducting bridge, a ferrite bead, and a π-filter. In addition, different conducting bridge widths and power island gap widths were analyzed, and compared. The modeled and measured results show that power plane segmentations with proper designs …

Grounding Of Heatpipe/Heatspreader And Heatsink Structures For Emi Mitigation, Chen Wang, James L. Drewniak, D. Wang, Ray Alexander, James L. Knighten, David M. Hockanson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
EMI problems caused by the presence of heatpipe/heatspreader and heatsink structures in a high-speed design are well known in engineering practice. High-frequency noise can be coupled from IC packages to an electrically conductive heatsink or heatspreader attached to the IC, which then is radiated, or the energy coupled to an enclosure cavity mode. This EMI coupling path was modeled with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and a mitigation approach was investigated. Good agreement between measurements and FDTD modeling is demonstrated, indicating FDTD is a suitable tool for analysis and design. Then, several grounding schemes suitable for a heatsink or heatspreader …

Circuit board mounted, shunt capacitive filters are less effective at high frequencies because of the mutual inductance (M) that exists between the input and output ports. An approximate expression for the mutual inductance is M=(μh/2π)ln(h/a); where h=via length and a=radius of the via connecting the capacitor to the return plane. The reduced mutual inductance associated with the new, three-terminal, surface-mounted capacitor results in more than 15 dB increased attenuation compared to two-terminal capacitors over the 0.3-6.0 GHz range with 50 Ω source and load terminations

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A composite media containing particles with a high internal field of magnetic anisotropy (hexagonal ferrites) useful for numerous EMC applications in a wide frequency band is considered. Effective constitutive parameters of a high-loss composite gyromagnetic media are represented in the Lorentzian form. It is convenient for the numerical analysis using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm with a recursive convolution procedure. The equations for the electric and magnetic field updating in such media are represented.

A relatively simple, closed-form expression has been developed to estimate the EMI from shielding enclosures due to coupling from interior sources through slots and apertures at the enclosure cavity modes. A power-balance method, Bethe's (1944) small-hole theory, and empirically developed formulas for the relation between radiation, and slot length and number of slots, were employed to estimate an upper bound on the radiated EMI from shielding enclosures. Comparisons between measurements and estimated field strengths suitably agree within engineering accuracy.

Specific design criteria are proposed to mitigate radiated emissions from a resonant enclosure excited by a heat sink acting as a microstrip patch antenna source. In this particular application, the EMI mechanism is assumed to be due to coupling from the dominant TMz010 mode to one or more resonant modes associated with the enclosure dimensions. The enclosure is then presumed to radiate, at the enclosure resonance frequencies, through one or more apertures, slots, or seams. The EMI-reduction strategy consists of shifting the resonant frequency of the dominant-patch antenna mode by dielectrically loading the patch antenna with thermal-gasket material …

Including Smt Ferrite Beads In Dc Power Bus And High-Speed I/O Line Modeling, Jun Fan, Shaofeng Luan, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Surface mount technology (SMT) ferrite beads are often used in high-speed digital circuit designs to mitigate noise. The common modeling approach is to include SMT ferrite beads as equivalent lumped LCR circuits. The work presented in this paper included SMT ferrite beads as a frequency-dependent impedance in a PEEC-like modeling tool denoted CEMPIE, a circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation formulation. Agreement with measurements demonstrates the approach. The applications shown are segmentation of power areas for noise isolation, and I/O line filtering.

This paper investigates the power bus noise and power bus impedance of printed circuit boards with four different kinds of embedded capacitance. These boards have power-ground plane pairs separated by a very thin layer of material with high dielectric permittivity. It is shown that embedded capacitance effectively reduces power bus noise over the entire frequency range evaluated (up to 5 GHz).

Investigation Of Pcb Layout Parasitics In Emi Filtering Of I/O Lines, Xiaoning Ye, Geping Liu, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
EMI filters are often utilized on I/O lines to reduce high-frequency noise from being conducted or coupled off the PCB and resulting in an EMI problem. However, layout parasitics are usually inevitable in practical circuit design, and the filtering performance may vary. In this study, the impact of the board layout on the filtering performance is investigated by |S21| measurements of sample PCB boards with different filter layouts. The finite-difference time-domain method is applied to model the boards, support the experimental work, and can be used to provide a means for conducting "what-if" engineering studies.

In recent years near-field microwave nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques have shown great promise for evaluating different properties of cement-based structures. An important issue regarding the inspection of these structures is the ability to determine the presence and evaluate the content of chloride in them. Chlorides can be introduced in these structures in many different ways including when salts are present in their mixing water. Consequently, for this investigation, two sets of 8" × 8" × 8" (203mm) cubic mortar specimens were prepared each with a water-to-cement (w/c) ratio of 0.5 and 0.6, respectively, and both sets with sand-to-cement ratios …

Automated Giemsa-banded chromosome image research has been largely restricted to classification schemes associated with isolated chromosomes within metaphase spreads. In normal human metaphase spreads, there are 46 chromosomes occurring in homologous pairs for the autosomal classes 1-22 and the X chromosome for females. Many genetic abnormalities are directly linked to structural and/or numerical aberrations of chromosomes within metaphase spreads. Cells with the Philadelphia chromosome contain an abnormal chromosome for class 9 and for class 22, leaving a single normal chromosome for each class. A data-driven homologue matching technique is applied to recognizing normal chromosomes from classes 9 and 22. Homologue …

The DC power-bus is a critical aspect in high-speed digital circuit designs. A circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation is presented herein to model arbitrary multilayer power-bus structures with vertical discontinuities that include decoupling capacitor interconnects. Green's functions in a stratified medium are used and the problem is formulated using a mixed-potential integral equation approach. The final matrix equation is not solved, rather, an equivalent circuit model is extracted from the first-principles formulation. Agreement between modeling and measurements is good, and the utility of the approach is demonstrated for DC power-bus design.

The paradigm shift to commercial off-the-shelf components appears inevitable, necessitating drastic changes to current software development and business practices. Quality and risk concerns currently limit the application of COTS based system design to noncritical applications. New approaches to quality and risk management will be needed to handle the growth of CBSs. Our metrics based approach and software engineering metrics can aid developers and managers in analyzing the return on investment in quality improvement initiatives for CBSs. These metrics also facilitate the modeling of cost and quality, although we need more complex models to capture the intricate relationships between cost and …

Investigation into the derivation of the dielectric property of a material with an embedded modulated PIN diode-loaded dipole is described, using an open-ended rectangular waveguide as the irradiating source. Previous measurements of the curing of a mortar specimen show the sensitivity of this combined technique and its potential for inspecting composite structures. Modification of previous algorithms for back calculating the dielectric properties of a material with a conductor backing is considered. The modification would involve replacing the reflection at the conductor with the reflection at a modulated dipole antenna. For this, comparisons between the reflection coefficients of the dipole antenna …

Stacked-card and modules-on-backplane printed circuit-board geometries are advantageous for conserving real-estate in many designs. Unfortunately, at high frequencies, electromagnetic magnetic interference (EMI) resulting from the nonnegligible impedance of the signal return at the connector may occur. This effective EMI coupling path results in the daughtercard being driven against the motherboard and attached cables, resulting in common-mode radiation. The connector geometry can be modified to minimize the EMI coupling path when high frequencies are routed between the motherboard and daughtercard. Current speeds and printed circuit board (PCB) sizes result in geometries that are of significant dimensions in terms of a wavelength …

Incorporating Two-Port Networks With S-Parameters Into Fdtd, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A modeling approach for incorporating a two-port network with S-parameters in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is reported in this paper. The proposed method utilizes the time-domain Y-parameters to describe the network characteristics, and incorporates the Y-parameters into the FDTD algorithm. The generalized pencil-of-function (GPOF) technique is applied to improve the memory efficiency of this algorithm by generating a complex exponential series for the Y-parameters and using recursive convolution in the FDTD updating equations. A modeling example is given, which shows that this approach is effective and accurate. This modeling technique can be extended for incorporating any number of N-port …

The design of optimal neurocontrollers that replace the conventional automatic voltage regulators for excitation control of turbogenerators in a multimachine power system is presented in this paper. The neurocontroller design is based on dual heuristic programming (DHP), a powerful adaptive critic technique. The feedback variables are completely based on local measurements from the generators. Simulations on a three-machine power system demonstrate that DHP based neurocontrol is much more effective than the conventional PID control for improving dynamic performance and stability of the power grid under small and large disturbances. This paper also shows how to design optimal multiple neurocontrollers for …

Traditionally, fed-batch biochemical process optimization and control uses complicated off-line optimizers, with no online model adaptation or re-optimization. This study demonstrates the applicability of a class of adaptive critic designs for online re-optimization and control of an aerobic fed-batch fermentor. Specifically, the performance of an entire class of adaptive critic designs, viz., heuristic dynamic programming, dual heuristic programming and generalized dual heuristic programming, was demonstrated to be superior to that of a heuristic random optimizer, on optimization of a fed-batch fermentor operation producing monoclonal antibodies

Each turbogenerator in the power system is equipped with a neuro-identifier, which is able to identify its particular turbogenerator and the rest of the network to which it is connected from moment to moment, based on only local measurements. Each neuro-identifier can then be used in the design of a nonlinear neurocontroller for each turbogenerator …
