Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We review recent advances in fast algorithms for fast integral equation solvers that are useful for IC applications. We review fast solvers for Laplace's equation, which is about 10 times faster than the conventional fast multipole method. Then we review the physics of low-frequency electromagnetics, and the relevant low-frequency method of moments. We describe a fast solver that allows us to solve over one million unknowns on a workstation recently. In addition, we demonstrate the applications of these fast integral equation solvers to the lithography problem. In addition, we propose a scheme whereby we first characterize blocks of linear circuits …

Comparison Of Near-Field Millimeter-Wave Probes For Detecting Corrosion Precursor Pitting Under Paint, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Sergey Kharkovsky, R. Zoughi, Russell A. Austin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aircraft structural components such as wings and fuselages are constantly exposed to harsh environments, which make them susceptible to corrosion initiation and growth. To complicate matters, corrosion is normally hidden under paint and primer and cannot be visually detected until significant corrosion has occurred, causing the paint to blister. Corrosion of this type is usually preceded by the presence of corrosion precursor pitting. Hence, early detection of pitting is a critical issue in the maintenance of an aircraft and its structural components. Near-field microwave nondestructive testing techniques have been successfully used for detection of corrosion under paint, including very small …

Determination Of Microwave Dielectric Properties Of Materials Using A Unique Application Of Embedded Modulated Scatterer Technique, Gabriel S. Freiburger, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The embedded modulated scatterer technique has been investigated in the past as a means of determining the dielectric properties of a material of interest using an open-ended rectangular waveguide and an embedded PIN diode-loaded dipole probe. This technique has been further explored in a unique application utilizing the complex ratio of dynamic reflection coefficients for the two states of the modulated dipole probe. By utilizing this ratio, the calculation of dielectric properties becomes independent of measurement parameters such as distance, orientation, and location of the dipole probe relative to the waveguide radiator. This paper explores this unique application of the …

The Space Shuttle Columbia's catastrophic failure is thought to have been caused by a dislodged piece of external tank spray on foam insulation (SOFI) striking the left wing of the orbiter causing significant damage to some of the reinforced carbon/carbon leading edge wing panels. Microwave and millimeter wave nondestructive evaluation methods have shown great potential for inspecting SOFI for the purpose of detecting anomalies such as small air voids that may cause separation of the SOFI from the external tank during a launch. These methods are capable of producing relatively high-resolution images of the interior of SOFI particularly when advanced …

Integrated circuits (ICs) are often a significant source of radiated energy from electronic systems. Near-field magnetic scanning is an effective tool for measuring the current distribution in IC packages and investigating chiplevel EMI problems. This paper discusses analysis of near-magnetic field scan data using tangential and normal field measurements. Results show that combining near-field scan results from probes with multiple orientations is an effective way to identify the current paths in IC packages.

The engineering of the power delivery network is becoming a fundamental issue in the design of high speed digital systems on PCB's. In fact, providing the required power to the different IC's at the specified noisefree voltage levels allows a correct functioning of the overall PCB systems. More over, the ongoing trend of replacing active devices with peripherally located I/O and PWR/GND pins with areally located I/O and PWR/GND pins (BGA packaged) increases the complexity of the models, when power delivery issues need to be studied in a larger contest, such as the overall PCB's. The employment of the powerful, …

Characterization and models for multi-gigabit signaling is an important issue in modern digital system. A good physical based model relies on a precise characterization of the test board. Typically, the characterization of the test board is associated with scattering matrix parameter measurement, which can be done with a VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) in the frequency-domain or a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) in the time-domain. The commonly used launch techniques on PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) associated with the VNA or TDR measurement in the microwave frequency range use SMA or 3.5 mm connectors, in edge-launch or vertical-launch fashions. The transition between …

A Three-Dimensional Fdtd Subgridding Method With Separate Spatial And Temporal Subgridding Interfaces, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The idea of separating the spatial and temporal subgridding interfaces is introduced in this paper. Based on this idea, the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms can be developed and analyzed separately. The spatial algorithm was given in the previous paper. In this paper, the temporal subgridding algorithm is described and the stability is illustrated by the analytical formulation of a one-dimensional model. An FDTD code that combines the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms is implemented. Numerical test models are calculated to show the stability and accuracy of the proposed method.

Comparison Of Hybrid Propulsion Drive Schemes, Keith Corzine, Shuai Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides a brief overview of a hybrid drives which have become popular in recent years. These drives combine two or more multilevel power inverters to obtain exceptional power quality which is necessary for Naval propulsion applications. Furthermore, for ship propulsion, where it may be difficult to obtain several isolated dc voltage sources, the inverter control can be set so that only one real dc power source is needed (or one per phase in the case of a series H-bridge type). Three types of hybrid drives considered and their advantages and limitations are described. Commonalities of the control of …

Locally Synchronous, Globally Asynchronous Design For Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (Lsga Qca), Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concept of clocking for QCA, referred to as the four-phase clocking, is widely used. However, inherited characteristics of QCA, such as the way to hold state, the way to synchronize data flows, and the way to power QCA cells, make the design of QCA circuits quite different from VLSI and introduce a variety of new design challenges and the most severe challenges are due to the fact that the overall timing of a QCA circuit is mainly dependent upon its layout. This fact is commonly referred to as the "layout-timing" problem. To circumvent the problem, a novel self-timed circuit …

Pulse Regulation Control Technique For Flyback Converter, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Ali Emadi, Mark Telefus, Curtis Davis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pulse regulation, a fixed frequency control technique, is introduced and applied to flyback converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The control parameters are designed in a way that the converter operates as close as possible to the critical conduction mode. In contrast to the conventional pulsewidth modulation control scheme, the principal idea of pulse regulation is to achieve output voltage regulation using high and low-power pulses. Pulse regulation is simple, cost effective, and enjoys a fast dynamic response. The proposed technique is applicable to any converter operating in DCM. However, this work mainly focuses on flyback topology. In this …

This paper proposes a novel environmental-based method for evaluating the good yield rate (GYR) of systems-on-chip (SoC) during fabrication. Testing and yield evaluation at high confidence are two of the most critical issues for the success of SoC as a viable technology. The proposed method relies on different features of fabrication, which are quantified by the so-called Fabrication environmental parameters (EPs). EPs can be highly correlated to the yield, so they are analyzed using statistical methods to improve its accuracy and ultimately direct the test process to an efficient execution. The novel contributions of the proposed method are: 1) to …

Coordination Of Ufls And Ufgc By Application Of D-Smes, Li Zhang, Yilu Liu, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the authors studied the coordination of under frequency load shedding (UFLS) and under frequency governor control (UFGC) by applying the distributed superconducting magnetic energy storage (D-SMES) devices. The active power of D-SMES device is controlled to eliminate the initial rapid frequency drop and allow time for the full action of UFGC to take over. The reactive power of D-SMES is controlled to stabilise the local bus voltage. The research results show that D-SMES devices can damp the quick dropping of system frequency and hold it waiting for the full activation of system spinning reserve. D-SMES can help …

Speech quality assessment methods are necessary for evaluating and documenting treatment outcomes of patients suffering from degraded speech due to Parkinson's disease, stroke, or other disease processes. Subjective methods of speech quality assessment are more accurate and more robust than objective methods but are time-consuming and costly. We propose a novel objective measure of speech quality assessment that builds on traditional speech processing techniques such as dynamic time warping (DTW) and the Itakura-Saito (IS) distortion measure. Initial results show that our objective measure correlates well with the more expensive subjective methods. © 2005 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

Modeling Controlled Switches And Diodes For Electro-Thermal Simulation, Jonathan W. Kimball

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Designers of advanced power converters may choose from a variety of switching device models for simulation. Some situations call for simple idealized models, while others require physics-based models. When evaluating thermal system performance, a behavioral model that includes both conduction and switching losses is desired. A set of models has been developed to include both unidirectional devices, such as IGBTs, BJTs, and diodes, and bidirectional devices, such as MOSFETs. Logic and timing elements are used to insert voltage and current sources into the circuit at appropriate times. All losses affect circuit operation, so simulation can accurately predict losses when the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The end of photolithography as the driver for Moore's law is predicted within seven to twelve years and six different emerging technologies (mostly nanoscale) are expected to replace the current CMOS-based system integration paradigm. As nanotechnology is emerging, (1) there is a strong need for well-educated nanoscale systems engineers by industry, and (2) research and education efforts are also called to overcome numerous nanoscale systems issues. This paper is to propose a way to teach nanotechnology by introducing two emerging technologies: crossbar-based nanoarchitecture and quantum-dot cellular automata.

Control Technique For Series Input-Parallel Output Converter Topologies, Jonathan W. Kimball, Joseph T. Mossoba, Philip T. Krein Jun 2005

Control Technique For Series Input-Parallel Output Converter Topologies, Jonathan W. Kimball, Joseph T. Mossoba, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A series input-parallel output DC-DC converter topology inherently provides output current sharing among the phases, provided the input voltages are forced to share. With conventional output voltage feedback controls, input voltage sharing is unstable. Recent literature work proposes complicated feedback loops to provide stable voltage sharing, at the expense of dynamic performance. In the current work, a simple controller based on the sensorless current mode approach (SCM) stabilizes voltage sharing without compromising system performance. The SCM controllers reject source disturbances, and allow the output voltage to be tightly regulated by additional feedback control. With SCM control in place, a #super-matched# …

Ac Impedance Measurement Techniques, Keith Corzine, M. Belkhayat, Yakov L. Familiant, Jing Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Naval ship as well as aerospace power systems are incorporating a greater degree of power electronic switching sources and loads. Although these power electronics based components provide exceptional performance, they are prone to instability due to their high efficiency and constant power characteristics which lead to negative impedance. When designing these systems, integrators must consider the impedance versus frequency at a system interface (which designates source and load). Stability criterions have been developed in terms of source and load impedance for both dc and ac systems and it is often helpful to have techniques for impedance measurement. For dc systems, …

Furnaces are among the most crucial components in the glass and metallurgical industry. Nowadays, furnaces are being operated at higher temperatures and for longer periods of time thus increasing the rate of wear on the furnace refractory lining. Consequently, there is a great need for a nondestructive tool that can accurately measure refractory wall thickness at high temperatures. In this paper the utility of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) radar is investigated for this purpose.

Spare Line Borrowing Technique For Distributed Memory Cores In Soc, B. Jang, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Vincenzo Piuri, Fabrizio Lombardi, Yong-Bin Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new architecture of distributed embedded memory cores for SoC is proposed and an effective memory repair method by using the proposed Spare Line Borrowing (software-driven reconfiguration) technique is investigated. It is known that faulty cells in memory core show spatial locality, also known as fault clustering. This physical phenomenon tends to occur more often as deep submicron technology advances due to defects that span multiple circuit elements and sophisticated circuit design. The combination of new architecture & repair method proposed in this paper ensures fault tolerance enhancement in SoC, especially in case of fault clustering. This …
