An analytical model of composites made of a dielectric base and randomly oriented metal inclusions in the form of nanorods is presented. This model is based on the generalized Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule. In this model, the nanorod particles are modeled as prolate spheroids with a statistically normal distribution of their aspect ratios. It is shown that parameters of the distribution laws affect the frequency characteristics of the composites both at microwave and optical frequencies. The results of computations are represented.

This paper investigates the effect of grounding posts when printed circuit boards are mounted near and parallel to a metal plate or chassis. Specifically, experimental data showing changes in radiated emission levels are explained by means of coupling phenomena between a power bus, a chassis cavity including grounding posts, and a cable connected to the power bus. This coupling is modeled using SPICE and the results are combined with an equivalent magnetic current source model to estimate the radiated emissions from various printed circuit board configurations. the calculated results are shown to be consistent with the corresponding experimental data. © …

The automobiles of the future are being designed on computers and a significant amount of performance and safety testing is done using computer models. by the time the first hardware prototype is built, many critical design decisions affecting intersystem and intra-system electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) have been made. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to perform the first EMC design review well before any hardware is available to test. Automotive EMC expert systems examine the relevant aspects of an automotive design while it is still on the computer to spot design features that are likely to cause EMC problems. © 2006 …

Advances in spaceborne vehicular technology have made possible the long-life duration of the mission in harsh cosmic environments. Reliability and data integrity are the commonly emphasized requirements of spaceborne solid-state mass storage systems, because faults due to the harsh cosmic environments, such as extreme radiation, can be experienced throughout the mission. Acceptable dependability for these instruments has been achieved by using redundancy and repair. Reconfiguration (repair) of memory arrays using spare memory lines is the most common technique for reliability enhancement of memories with faults. Faulty cells in memory arrays are known to show spatial locality. This physical phenomenon is …

The fast multipole algorithm manifests in two very different forms at low frequencies and at mid frequencies. Each can operate in their respective regimes, but are not tenable in the other regimes. The paper reports on a way to factorize the Green's function for fast algorithm using a mixed form. The low-frequency fast multipole algorithm (LF-FMA) will be used at low frequencies or the long-wavelength regime, and the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) will be used for the mid frequencies or the shorter-wavelength regime. For object modeling where both long-wavelength and wave physics are important, we propose a mixed-form fast …

The General Variational Formulas For Capacitance Parameter Extraction, W. C. Chew, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
To obtain second order accuracy using the first order data for the capacitance parameter extraction, a set of new generalized variational formulas are presented in this paper. They are complete since they are valid not only for self-capacitances, but also for mutual capacitances. A more general variational formula is derived to account for the asymmetrical elastance matrix case. By these novel formulas the computational accuracy can be significantly improved compared to the conventional direct capacitance extraction method. © 2005 IEEE.

The use of combined embedded modulated scattering technique and near-field microwave nondestructive testing techniques is investigated as a novel method for evaluating the dielectric properties of a material. The forward formulation for determining the reflection coefficient at the aperture of a waveguide radiating into a dielectric half-space in which a PIN diode-loaded dipole (i.e., modulated scattering technique probe) is embedded is presented. This formulation is based upon calculating the near-field coupling between the waveguide and the dipole as a mutual impedance.

Switched capacitor (SC) converters are gaining acceptance as alternatives to traditional, inductor-based switching power converters. Proper design of SC converters requires an understanding of all loss sources and their impacts on circuit operation. In the present work, an equivalent resistance method is developed for analysis, and equivalent resistance formulae are presented for various modes of operation. Quasiresonant converters are explored and compared to standard SC converters. Comparisons to inductor-based switching power converters are made. A number of capacitor technologies are evaluated and compared for applications to both SC converters and inductor-based converters. The resulting model can be used to accurately …

This paper discusses a multi-scale neural spike detection algorithm for a low-power analog circuit implementation. The key idea is to implement wavelet decomposition and improve spike detection by independently controlling thresholds for each scale. Each thresholder scale is then combined to provide a single output indicating a spike occurrence. This spike detection algorithm shows promising results towards a robust, compact, and unsupervised low power analog spike detection circuit. A low power front-end spike detection circuit can be added to a neural amplifier and dramatically reduce the required data bandwidth for BMI applications. © 2005 IEEE.

A Grasp For Unitary Space-Time Codes, Adam Panagos, Kurt Louis Kosbar
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Unitary space-time codes perform well at high signal-to-noise ratios on MIMO channels even when the propagation coefficients between transmitter and receiver are unknown. One method of constructing unitary space-time constellations uses a random search to find signal constellations that minimize the maximum pairwise correlation between transmitted signals. The work presented here uses a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) for finding good unitary space-time code constellations. Simulation results show that, on average, this technique finds codes with better correlation properties than the random search method. This new search procedure was also used to find signal constellations with better correlation properties …

Detection of chloride ingress and evaluation of its distribution and temporal movement in reinforced concrete structures is an important practical issue. Steel reinforcing bars embedded in good quality concrete are normally protected from corrosion. However, the presence of a sufficient concentration of free chloride ions in the region of the reinforcing steel can initiate the process of corrosion. Therefore, it is important to be able to detect ingress of chloride ions and their distribution in cement-based materials. Moreover, it is important to obtain this information nondestructively. In recent years, near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods, using open-ended rectangular waveguide probes, have …

Increasing demand coupled with limitations on new construction indicate that existing power transmission must be better controlled in order to continue reliable operation. Recent advances in FACTS devices provide a mechanism to better control power flow on the transmission network. One particular device, the unified power flow controller (UPFC), holds the most promise for maintaining operation even when the system has suffered partial failure (either naturally occurring, due to human error, or a malicious attack). In addition to the capital cost, the primary obstacles to widespread UPFC use are the combined problems of selecting the most cost effective locations for …

This paper introduces an approach of using a plated through-hole (PTH) via transmission-line model in the design of a thick printed circuit board, such as a backpanel. Full wave FEM modeling of a section of backpanel containing a differential via pair was compared with a transmission model. Computed values of the differential transmission loss agreed within an acceptable range for engineering studies, yet the transmission line model results required less than 2% of the computation time that the full wave model required. Effects of via spacing, via diameter and trace thickness were also examined.

This paper establishes that dynamic interactions can occur between multiple UPFCs installed in power systems. The existence of the dynamic interactions can adversely affect the overall system performance and lead to system instability. This paper identifies two types of interactions among FACTS controllers: low frequency inter-area interaction and high frequency controller interactions. Several control approaches are proposed to mitigate these interactions. The IEEE New England 10-machine 39-bus system is used to demonstrate the existence of the control interactions and illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed interaction mitigation controls.

This paper presents reliable QCA cell structures for designing single clock-controlled majority gates with a tolerance to radius of effect-induced faults, for use as a basic building component for carry look-ahead adder. Realizable quantum computing is still well in the future due to the complexity of the quantum mechanics that govern them. In this regard, QCA-based system design is a challenging task since each cell''s state must interact with all the cells that are in its energy-effective range in its clocking zone, referred to as its radius of effect. This paper proposes a design approach for majority gates to overcome …

Batteries, ultra capacitors, fuel cells, and solar arrays are widely used in electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs/HVs) as an electric power source or an energy storage unit. In the structure of the electric power system of modern EVs/HVs, more than one of these units may be employed to improve the performance and efficiency; hence utilization of a multi-input DC-DC converter is inevitable to obtain a regulated bus DC voltage. In this paper, a review of multiple input DC-DC power electronic converters (MI-PEC) devoted to combine the power flow from several on-board energy sources of an EV/HV is presented. Several multi-input …

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles need a power plant that includes dc-dc converters. While using these converters, their control plays an important role in the overall performance of the vehicle. Due to their several drawbacks including poor communications, analog control schemes are not suitable for the automotive industry, whereas digital control methods successfully meet the demands. Various types of digital control techniques for dc-dc converters are studied and classified in this paper. The drawbacks and advantages of each method are described.

Knowledge of high-frequency currents in the chip and chip-package are necessary for EMI analysis and prediction, though measurement of these currents may be difficult to obtain in many cases. One possibility is to estimate currents from near-field scan data. In this paper, measurements were made of the magnetic field over a simple circuit and a chip package. The current flowing in the circuit and the chip lead frame was estimated from the compensated near-field data and compared with measurements made directly on the pins. Estimation was performed both with and without structural information of the lead frame. The susceptibility of …

Electromagnetic emissions were measured from several radio receivers to demonstrate the possibility of detecting and identifying these devices based on their unintended emissions. Radiated fields from the different radio receivers have unique characteristics that can be used to identify these devices by analyzing time-frequency plots of measured radiation. A neural network was also developed for automated device detection.

Aim of this paper is the validation in both frequency and time domain of the procedure to extract fully H-Spice compatible equivalent circuits of structures on printed circuit boards. The procedure is initiated by standard measurement of scattering parameters between 40MHz to 20GH. After the extraction of the equivalent circuit, the computed scattering parameters are compared with those measured. The same equivalent circuit is also used for transient analysis in order to compare TDR measurement and eye-pattern to a pseudo-random bit sequence with those coming from the simulations.
