Corollaries On The Fixpoint Completion: Studying The Stable Semantics By Means Of The Clark Completion, Pascal Hitzler Mar 2004

Corollaries On The Fixpoint Completion: Studying The Stable Semantics By Means Of The Clark Completion, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The fixpoint completion fix (P) of a normal logic program P is a program transformation such that the stable models of P are exactly the models of the Clark completion of fix (P). This is well-known and was studied by Dung and Kanchanasut [15]. The correspondence, however, goes much further: The Gelfond-Lifschitz operator of P coincides with the immediate consequence operator of fix (P), as shown by Wendt [51], and even carries over to standard operators used for characterizing the well-founded and the Kripke-Kleene semantics. We will apply this knowledge to the study of …

Operator-Based Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2004

Operator-Based Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The question how knowledge can be represented by means of logic programs with negation has been a driving force for the field of non-monotonic reasoning. Implemented systems, known as answer set programming systems, have emerged recently and are currently being used in various application domains like the semantic web.

Intuitively, logic programs are being used for encoding commonsense reasoning, in particular the phenomenon that human reasoning tends to ”jump to conclusions” under incomplete knowledge. Formally, this kind of reasoning is described by interpreting the first-order syntax of logic programs in a more sophisticated way. This, in turn, is most easily …

Overview Of Metal-On-Polyethylene, Metal-On-Metal, And Ceramic Hip Wear Mechanisms, A. Buford, Tarun Goswami Jan 2004

Overview Of Metal-On-Polyethylene, Metal-On-Metal, And Ceramic Hip Wear Mechanisms, A. Buford, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

Premature failure of orthopaedic hip implants caused by multiple wear mechanisms is the primary failure mode of prosthetic hips. Wearing of the implants may lead to aseptic loosening, biological incompatibilities, and mechanical failure of the implant. In order to prevent or restrict the effects of the wear mechanisms, multiple laboratory studies are being conducted in order to determine each mechanism and its contribution to increased wear rates. This paper combines previous laboratory studies related to the wear of metal-onpolyethylene, metal-on-metal, and ceramic materials. The bulk quantity materials discussed include cobalt chromium alloys, stainless steels, zirconium oxide ceramics, and polyethylene materials …

Joining Challenges In The Packaging Of Biomems, Hans Herfurth, Reiner Witte, S. Heinemann, Golam Newaz, Ahsan Mian, Daniel Georgiev, Greg Auner

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Micro-joining and hermetic sealing of dissimilar and biocompatible materials is a critical issue for a broad spectrum of products such as micro -electronical, micro -optical and biomedical products and devices. Novel implantable microsystems currently under development will include functions such as localized sensing of temperature and pressure, electrical stimulation of neural tissue and the delivery of drugs. These devices are designed to be long-term implants that are remotely powered and controlled. The development of new, biocompatible materials and manufacturing processes that ensure long-lasting functionality and reliability are critical challenges. Important factors in the assembly of such systems are the small …

Cfd Analysis Of Unsteady Separated Transonic Oscillation Cascade Aerodynamics, Xuedong Zhou, J. Mitch Wolff Jan 2004

Cfd Analysis Of Unsteady Separated Transonic Oscillation Cascade Aerodynamics, Xuedong Zhou, J. Mitch Wolff

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

With an improved algebraic mesh-deforming algorithm, STAR-CD, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver is employed for the numerical analysis of a transonic oscillating linear cascade of advanced design blades. The center blade oscillates 0.6-degrees about the middle cord. The numerical simulation is conducted for a frequency range from 200 Hz to 500 Hz. A hybrid grid, which utilizes a structured O-grid around the airfoil and an unstructured grid everywhere else is employed. The Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), one equation turbulence model, along with other two equation k-ε models, are also utilized for the steady state simulation. The S-A turbulence …

Approximating First-Order Logic Programs By Feedforward Networks, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2004

Approximating First-Order Logic Programs By Feedforward Networks, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We want to apply Funahashi's theorem in order to approximate the TP operator for first-order (normal) logic programs P via 3-layer feedforward networks. I.e. we need to understand TP as a continuous function on the reals.

We will need to study some preliminaries from set-theoretic topology first result from [HS00, HHS0x], which extends results from [HKS99]. We close with some further considerations about the methods and results.

Wear Mechanisms In Ceramic Hip Implants, M. Slonaker Jan 2004

Wear Mechanisms In Ceramic Hip Implants, M. Slonaker

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

The wear in hip implants is one of the main causes for premature hip replacements. The wear affects the potential life of the prosthesis and subsequent removals of in-vivo implants. Therefore, the objective of this article is to review various joints that show lower wear rates and consequently higher life. Ceramics are used in hip implants and have been found to produce lower wear rates. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of ceramics compared to other implant materials. Different types of ceramics that are being used are reviewed in terms of the wear characteristics, debris released, and their size …

General Creep-Fatigue Life Prediction Models, J. Toland, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a data bank that was compiled from published and unpublished sources. Using these data, low cycle fatigue curves were generated under a range of test conditions showing the effect of test parameters on the Coffin-Manson behavior of steel alloys. Generic equations have been developed in this paper to predict the creep-fatigue life of high temperature materials. Several new multivariate equations were developed to predict the creep-fatigue life of following alloy groups; I) Cr-Mo steels, 2) stainless steels and 3) generic materials involving the materials from the following alloy groups, solder, copper, steels, titanium, tantalum, and nickel based …

External And Intrinsic Anchoring In Nematic Liquid Crystals: A Monte Carlo Study, Nikolai V. Priezjev, G. Skacej, R. A. Pelcovits, S. Zumer

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a Monte Carlo study of external surface anchoring in nematic cells with partially disordered solid substrates, as well as of intrinsic anchoring at free nematic interfaces. The simulations are based on the simple hexagonal lattice model with a spatially anisotropic intermolecular potential. We estimate the corresponding extrapolation length b by imposing an elastic deformation in a hybrid cell-like nematic sample. Our estimates for b increase with increasing surface disorder and are essentially temperature independent. Experimental values of b are approached only when both the coupling of nematic molecules with the substrate and the anisotropy of nematic-nematic interactions are …
