Analytical And Experimental Vibration Analysis Of Variable Update Rate Waveform Generation, Joshua F. Mark Jan 2011

Analytical And Experimental Vibration Analysis Of Variable Update Rate Waveform Generation, Joshua F. Mark

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Typical vibration analysis of turbine engine components incorporates the use of a function generator to produce a signal that is routed to an excitation source as the forcing function of the test specimen. These waveforms are constructed by varying the amplitude of the signal over time with a fixed update rate (time increment between samples). This research investigates generating chirp waveforms by storing only one sinusoid of points and using an external timing signal to repetitively send out these stored data points. This results in varying the amplitude of the signal over time as well as the update rate. The …

Bayesian Compressed Sensing Based Dynamic Joint Spectrum Sensing And Primary User Localization For Dynamic Spectrum Access, Xue Li, Steven Hong, Zhu Han, Zhiqiang Wu Jan 2011

Bayesian Compressed Sensing Based Dynamic Joint Spectrum Sensing And Primary User Localization For Dynamic Spectrum Access, Xue Li, Steven Hong, Zhu Han, Zhiqiang Wu

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

In cognitive radio (CR) and dynamic spectrum access (DSA) network research, most of current work on spectrum sensing focuses on the detection of existence of the spectrum holes for secondary user (SU) to harness. However, in a more sophisticated CR, the SU needs to detect more than just the existence of primary users (PUs) and spectrum holes: e.g., the transmission power and location of the primary users. In our previous work, we combined the spectrum sensing and PU power/localization detection together, and developed a joint PU detection and power/localization detection algorithm via compressed sensing (CS). By employing compressed sensing, the …

3d Reconstruction Of Human Ribcage And Lungs And Improved Visualization Of Lung X-Ray Images Through Removal Of The Ribcage, Christopher Koehler, Thomas Wischgoll Jan 2011

3d Reconstruction Of Human Ribcage And Lungs And Improved Visualization Of Lung X-Ray Images Through Removal Of The Ribcage, Christopher Koehler, Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The analysis of X-ray imagery is the standard pre-screening approach for lung cancer. Unlike CT-scans, X-ray images only provide a 2D projection of the patient’s body. As a result occlusions, i.e. some body parts covering other areas of the body within this projected X-ray image, can make the analysis more difficult. For example, the ribs, a predominant feature within the X-ray image, can cover up cancerous nodules, making it difficult for the Computer Aided Diagnostic (CAD) systems or even a doctor to detect such nodules. Hence, this paper describes a methodology for reconstructing a patient-specific 3D model of the ribs …

Effect Of Fullerene Nano-Spheres On Evaporation Kinetics Of Fluids, Wenhu Wang Jan 2011

Effect Of Fullerene Nano-Spheres On Evaporation Kinetics Of Fluids, Wenhu Wang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

As the interest in fluid evaporation kinetics keeps increasing, it's inevitably noticed that fullerene nanospheres play an important role on it. In this study, we investigate the C60 nanospheres' effect on the evaporation kinetics and thermal transitions of different solvents (water, chlorobenzene) over the entire range of solubility. According to distinct polarity of different solvent, fullerene solution would behave differently, the trend of increasing in evaporation rate as the concentration increased was observed in aromatic solvents while the rate kept decreasing in water. The result of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman spectroscopy provided an evidence about structuring in water …

Characterization Of Room Temperature Terahertz Direct Detectors, Carla Renee Boggs Jan 2011

Characterization Of Room Temperature Terahertz Direct Detectors, Carla Renee Boggs

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Room temperature direct detectors operating in the so-called Terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, and representing the most common detection technologies currently available, were characterized at 104, 280 GHz or 600 GHz within their intended range of operating frequencies. These detectors included commercial Schottky-diode rectifiers (Virginia Diodes and Spacek Labs), commercial pyroelectric detectors (Spectrum Detector), and a commercial Golay cell (QMCI). The characterization included antenna patterns, responsivity, electrical noise, noise equivalent temperature difference (NEΔT ), and noise equivalent power (NEP). Since all the characterization measurements were made the same way, quantitative comparisons can be made between the performances of …

Efficient Risk Assessment Using Probability Of Fracture Nomographs, Venkateswaran Shanmugam Jan 2011

Efficient Risk Assessment Using Probability Of Fracture Nomographs, Venkateswaran Shanmugam

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The traditional risk-based design processes involve designing the structure based on risk estimates obtained during several iterations of an optimization routine. This approach is computationally expensive for large-scale aircraft structural systems because of the iterative nature of the risk assessment methods. Therefore, this research introduces the concept of risk-based design plots that can be used for both structural sizing and risk assessment of stiffened plates when maximum allowable crack length information is available. These plots are obtained using normalized probability density functions of load and material properties and are applicable for any arbitrary load and strength magnitudes that follow similar …
