Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: Fluid flow is characterized by the presence of various coherent vortical structures such as vortex tubes, vortex streets, and eddies. When these vortical structures interact with each other or other distinct mechanisms in a fluid, they form a chaotic region of mixing where a large transfer of mass and energy is observed; This phenomenon is called a vortex interaction and is commonly observed in nature across large Reynolds number regimes. In engineering, vortex interactions are an important topic of research in areas such as mixing, flow induced vibrations, propulsion, aerodynamics, convection, heat island effects, hydrodynamics, and atmospheric Sciences, to …

Fixed Wing Aircraft Collision Avoidance Using Collision Cone Theory, Andrew T. Iii Beary Aug 2022

Fixed Wing Aircraft Collision Avoidance Using Collision Cone Theory, Andrew T. Iii Beary

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis develops the guidance and control components of an aircraft collision avoidance system, using a collision cone-based approach. These guidance and control laws are developed by considering the nonlinear relative kinematic equations of the aircraft that are on a collision course, as well as the nonlinear flight dynamics of the aircraft performing the collision avoidance maneuver. The longitudinal and lateral-directional axes of the aircraft are considered separately. The developed guidance and control laws are subsequently integrated with the nonlinear aircraft dynamics in a MATLAB/Simulink framework, and simulations performed to demonstrate the working of the overall system.

Study Of Electron Energy Filtering For Cold Electron Transport At Room Temperature, Pushkar Kiran Gothe Aug 2022

Study Of Electron Energy Filtering For Cold Electron Transport At Room Temperature, Pushkar Kiran Gothe

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The Fermi-Dirac thermal excitation of electrons at room temperature has been a significant limitation to many technologically important phenomena such as single electron transport. The electron thermal excitation also degrades the performance of modern electronic devices as well as spintronic devices. The scaling of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) is hindered due to the thermal excitation of electrons at room temperature. Suppression of the thermally excited electrons at room temperature would therefore enable further scaling of the transistors, and in turn, improve the performance of electronic devices. This study demonstrates the suppression of electron thermal excitation at room temperature without using …

Hierarchical Microstructures To Overcome The Conflict Between Strength And Toughness Of Hard Coatings: Tin/Ni As A Model System, Ignacio Lopez Cabanas

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In the recent times, industry's production speed has been increasing and thus, the production of parts needs to adapt and so do the materials used to manufacture them. Hence, tools exposed to more extreme conditions using hard coatings need them to be more reliable. In this work an improvement of the toughness of TiN/Ni coatings is achieved through the combination of different microstructures at different levels. This first part consisted on finding the optimum TiN/Ni composition by using a high throughput methodology for a faster analysis and the second on the combination of that composition with a multilayer structure to …

Novel Nanoparticles To Stimulate Therapeutic Angiogenesis For The Treatment Of Peripheral Arterial Diseases, Tam Phung Nguyen

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a severe impairment of arterial vessels resulting in obstruction of normal blood flow in the legs, leading to acute or chronic lower limb ischemia and subsequently high morbidity and mortality rates. Common treatments for PAD, such as medications and surgical revascularization, have several limitations. For instance, medications used to lower cholesterol, reduce high blood pressure, control blood sugar, prevent blood clots, and reduce/delay symptoms such as leg pains. Still, they cannot treat the established disease directly and often cause side-effects, including bleeding, headache, and diarrhea. Meanwhile, many elderly PAD patients cannot undergo surgical options. Therefore, …

Engineering Elastic And Functional Electrospun Nano-Fibers For Potential Heart Repair, Alan Mark Taylor

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

In the United States and around the world, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been one of the main causes of death since 1921, responsible for approximately 1 in 4 deaths domestically. Myocardial infarction (MI), or commonly called a heart attack, is a subset of CVD that often ends in heart failure (HF). Cardiac cells are incapable of regeneration, leading to severe impacts on quality of life. Current treatments for MI fail to target left ventricular remodeling and therefore do little to address the progression towards HF. Cardiac scaffolds for tissue engineering (TE) are a prominent solution in recent research. Developing various …

Brain topographical connectivity, which shows the communication between regions of the brain, and its alteration can be assessed to quantify the effects of external stimuli, diseases, and cognitive decline, in resting-state or task-based measurements. Furthermore, understanding the interactions between different physiological representations of neural activity, namely electrophysiological, hemodynamic, and metabolic signals in the human brain, has been an important topic among …

Multisorb: A Low-Cost Approach To Remove Multiple Metals And Organics From Leachate And Wastewater, Mithila Chakraborty Aug 2022

Multisorb: A Low-Cost Approach To Remove Multiple Metals And Organics From Leachate And Wastewater, Mithila Chakraborty

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: Landfill leachates are considered now as a reusable source of water. Even irrigation projects are now considering use of non-traditional water sources, including treated wastewater, to augment supplies. Treated wastewater or leachate, however, may still contain many inorganic and organic pollutants of emerging concern, because traditional wastewater treatment plants are unable to remove all of them. Adsorbents have been demonstrated to effectively remove heavy metals and recalcitrant organics from leachate/wastewater more effectively, at lower cost, and using less chemicals and energy than many competing techniques. A single adsorbent with one pre-treatment, however, is not effective for simultaneously removing different …

Design Of Crack Attenuating Mix Using Waste Plastic, Shruti Singh Aug 2022

Design Of Crack Attenuating Mix Using Waste Plastic, Shruti Singh

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Plastic has many good properties such as inexpensiveness, light weightedness and durability, but it comes with one major catch i.e., its ‘indestructibility’. Plastic waste is now omnipresent and highlights that all plastic ever produced still exists in some shape or form either as macro, micro or nano plastics, making it one of the greatest challenges our planet is facing today. At the same time many existing pavements are experiencing structural and functional deficiencies due to rapid growth in traffic volume. This has led to an ever-increasing rise in construction and rehabilitation cost. So, an alternative has been explored through this …

Identifying The Optimal Combination Of Critical Roadside Slope Segments Susceptible To Rainfall-Induced Failures For Minimizing Vulnerability Of Highway Networks, Anil Baral

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The stability of roadside slopes is vital for the smooth operation of the highway transportation system. The failure of slopes adjacent to the highway corridors adversely impacts the network users and network operators. The network users are subjected to delays through speed restrictions, stoppage, and diversions due to the blockage of a motorway. The network operators face the burden of implementation and finance of emergency slope repairs. Proactive rehabilitation of slopes helps to reduce roadside slope failures and minimize the disruption of transportation networks resulting from rainfall-induced slope failures. However, all the slope segments susceptible to rainfall-induced failures cannot be …

Reactive Motion Planning Of Autonomous Vehicles In 3-Dimensional Environments Using Collision And Rendezvous Cones, Kashish Dhal Aug 2022

Reactive Motion Planning Of Autonomous Vehicles In 3-Dimensional Environments Using Collision And Rendezvous Cones, Kashish Dhal

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation presents a collision cone/rendezvous cone-based approach for reactive motion planning in three-dimensional dynamic environments. Collision avoidance is fundamental to robot motion planning. In dynamic environments, the path and velocities of obstacles are not known a-priori, and hence it is a common practice to use reactive planners. Reactive planners should be computationally inexpensive because they need to act fast to avoid potential collisions. To reduce the computational load, a majority of motion planning algorithms model the shapes of the robots and obstacles as a circle/sphere. However, when the objects are elongated more in one direction than another, the spherical …

Developing A Lagrangian Sediment Transport Model For Natural Streams, Saman Baharvand Aug 2022

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Sediment transport in natural streams is a complex process that can significantly affect the stream’s water quality, ecosystem, and morphology. Suspended sediment concentrations can adversely affect the health of the ecosystem and aquatic species, and the deposited sediment particles can change the morphology and have irreparable environmental impacts. Several numerical models that can be used to manage and mitigate the adverse effects of sediment released into rivers by natural or anthropogenic activities have been developed to estimate the sediment and pollutant transport in waterbodies. However, the goal of the research for this thesis was to develop a Lagrangian stochastic sediment …

Sustainable And Inclusive Engineering: The Use Of Mentors And Sustainable Remediation To Increase The Presence Of Underrepresented Groups In Engineering, Nathaniel L. Steadman

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups in engineering, such as women, has been a priority for many decades to diversify the profession to meet the current demand for engineers. Unfortunately, barriers continue to inhibit the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in engineering, thus reducing the impact of these efforts. A potential barrier is a lack of social connection to the technical problem definition, design, and decision-making that engineers utilize, prioritizing technical knowledge over social. Previous research has theorized that the incorporation of social considerations in technical engineering design increases interest in engineering for underrepresented groups. The purpose of …

High ice adhesion is a significant problem in several industries. The majority of practical issues brought on by ice adhesion are still not fully resolved, and the ice-adhesion mechanism is still poorly understood. Ice adhesion is a complex phenomenon that becomes more intricate when salt is involved, as in many marine cases. Reducing ice adhesion by generating hydrophobic surfaces might be advantageous in many applications as a passive ice removal strategy. Lowering adhesion may reduce friction, abrasion, and damage to structures in a maritime environment, as well as any surface prone to ice development. This process may also be utilized …

The 2015 Paris agreement aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions and keep global temperature rise below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. Reducing CH4 emissions from leaking pipelines presents a relatively achievable objective. While walking and driving surveys are commonly used to detect leaks, the detection probability (DP) is poorly characterized. This study aims to investigate how leak rates, survey distance and speed, and atmospheric conditions affect the DP in controlled belowground conditions with release rates of 0.5–8.5 g min−1. Results show that DP is highly influenced by survey speed, atmospheric stability, and wind speed. The average DP in Pasquill–Gifford stability …
