Information concerning hydraulic parameters on upland areas could be greatly expanded through the use of tracing techniques. If bromide is used as a tracer, adsorption of bromide onto sediment may be of concern. Therefore, a laboratory study was conducted to identify the effects of sediment content and initial bromide concentration on adsorption of bromide for selected soils.
When bromide solutions were used within the appropriate instrument measurement range, neither soil texture, liming, nor sediment content were found to significantly affect adsorption of bromide. In contrast to systems using fluorescent dyes, correction factors for estimating adsorption of bromide are unnecessary. Since …

Enhanced Kerr rotation spectra are measured in thin magnetic layers on silver. Also, variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry is employed to measure the optical dielectric function of both the thin magnetic layer and the underlying thick silver layer. These results are explained quantitatively using the electromagnetic theory for reflection of light from multiple layers of isotropic and gyrotropic materials.

Ellipsometric Study Of Al2O3/Ag/Si And Sio2/Ag/Quartz Ashed In An Oxygen Plasma, Bhola N. De, John A. Woollam

Using monolayer-sensitive variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry, the silver oxide growth on a silver mirror, coated with an Al₂ O₃ or SiO₂ protective layer, was investigated. The oxidation was done in a pure oxygen plasma asher. The resulting silver oxide growth was monitored accurately as a function of exposure time in the plasma asher. It was found that silver was converted to silver oxide under the protective coating, during ashing of a sample. The optical constants of a dense silver oxide thin film, created by oxidizing in the asher, were also measured.

Murine monoclonal antibodies, developed following immunization with human protein C, were characterized for their ability tboin d antigen in thpe resence of either CaClz or excess EDTA. Three stablec lones were obtained which produced antiboditehsa t bound to protein C only itnh e presence of EDTA. Allt hree antibodies bound to the light choafi np rotein C on immunoblots and also bound to the homologous proteins factor X and prothrombin in solid-phase radioimmunoassays. Ordination And Mapping Of Wetland Communities In Nebraska's Rainwater Basin Region, Michael C. Gilbert

Forty-seven Rainwater Basin wetlands of south-central Nebraska were evaluated to provide information on vegetation composition, species assemblages determined from direct and indirect ordination methodology, and community characteristics derived from wetlands mapping. Vegetation/soil relationships were evaluated from both vegetational stand and mapping data. Seasonal and year to year vegetation dynamics were evaluated for one study site, Harvard Marsh.

Ordination of vegetational data was accomplished by use of weighted averaging and detrended correspondence analysis. Weighted average ordination results indicated wetland status for the Fillmore, Scott and Massie soil series. Triggering In Trigatron Spark Gaps: A Fundamental Study, P. F. Williams, F. E. Peterkin

The trigatron has been in widespread use as a demand-triggered, high-voltage switch for more than 40 years. In spite of the popularity and maturity of the technology, there persists an uncertainty over the basic physical mechanism(s) responsible for triggering breakdown in the devices. We present the results of an empirical study of trigatrons that demonstrates that breakdown is initiated by a streamer launched from the trigger pin, independent of the trigger spark. We compare our results with those of previous workers, and discuss the generality of our conclusions.

Sediment transport capacity for shallow overland flow was represented as a quadratic function of downslope distance using the assumption of a linear increase in overland flow discharge with downslope distance and an approximation to the Yalin equation for sediment transport capacity. The simplified equation for sediment transport applies to complex topography having uniform soil and management characteristics. The simplified equation accurately approximated the Yalin equation when calibrated using the average of the hydraulic shear stresses at the end of a constant slope reference profile and the end of the actual profile. Irrigated soybean production in Nebraska spans a region with diverse soils and climates. Irrigators can easily adopt irrigation scheduling using a stage of growth for timing applications. However, simplifying assumptions, including soil water holding capacity, rainfall, stored soil water, and adequate irrigation system capacity, are implicit in the development of stage of growth irrigation scheduling recommendations. Reliance on these can lead to misapplication of irrigation water.
This project tested irrigation scheduling techniques for indeterminate soybean production in Nebraska, with stage of growth indicating the initiation of irrigation. The range of soils and climate in the study area gave a range …

The study was conducted to determine agricultural mechanics units of instruction that should be included and the extent to which they should be included in the Nebraska high school vocational agriculture curriculum in the 1990's as perceived by three respondent groups. The respondent groups included 36 vocational agriculture instructors, 36 farm operators and 36 managers of mechanics related agribusinesses in Nebraska. A mailed survey was used to collect data for the study. The survey return rate for the vocational agriculture instructors was 100 percent, the return rate for the farm operators was 89 percent and the return rate for the …

Using data for excess Gibbs energy gh and enthalpy of mixing hE, temperature dependent parameters of the UNlQUAC equation have been estimated for twenty four systems of binary mixtures. Fifteen of them include data for gh and hE at more than one isotherm. These parameters are later tested in predicting the gh and hE data simultaneously and representing the effect of temperature on such data. The UNIQUAC equation with temperature dependent parameters represents larger values of maximum heat of mixing than does the UNlQUAC equation with the parameters independent of temperature.

Performance data of two modified-open-front non-mechanically ventilated swine nurseries have shown that solar energy can be effectively utilized to maintain a productive environment within the animal space during cold weather (temperatures as low as -26°C ( - 15 °F). The nurseries feature a monoslope roof design and passive collector panels that also function as warm weather ventilation panels. An active solar-heating system uses a ground-level collector operated in conjunction with an in-floor solar heat distribution and storage system. The nurseries were designed to handle pigs weighing from 7 to 23 kg (15 to 50 lb). An average of 19% of …

Plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 13.56 MHz has been used to produce diamond particles in two different inductively coupled systems with a mixture of methane and hydrogen. The effect of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) overcoating on silicon, niobium, and stainless-steel substrates has been investigated and in the case of silicon has been found to enhance particle formation as compared to uncoated polished silicon. In addition the use of carbon monoxide in hydrogen has been found to produce well-defined individual faceted particles as well as polycrystalline films on quartz and DLC coated silicon substrates.
