Abstract: We have used variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) to analyze the materials surfaces and interfaces in multilayer sputtered media computer disks. Specifically, the system C/CoNiCr/Cr/NiP/Al has been investigated for layer thicknesses, interfacial and surface roughness, and radial and circumferential uniformity. By first characterizing the Cr/NiP/Al then CoNiCr/Cr/NiP/Al structures, we were able to fully characterize the complete disk structure. The interface width between the carbon layer and CoNiCr magnetic layer was determined to be approximately 260 Å. This is reasonable considering typical surface roughness present on magnetic disks, and that the carbon “fills” in this surface roughness. VASE is a …

Stress Cracking And Breakage Susceptibility As Affected By Moisture Content At Harvest For Four Yellow Dent Corn Hybrids, Curtis Weller, M. R. Paulsen, M. P. Steinberg

Four hybrids of yellow dent com were harvested at three levels of moisture content. After drying, samples were analyzed for stress cracking and susceptibility to breakage in Wisconsin (WBT) and Stein (SBT) breakage testers. Significant differences in stress cracking and breakage susceptibility as determined with the WBT and the SBT were observed among the four hybrids. Breakage susceptibility as measured with the WBT and SBT significantly increased as the harvest moisture increased. Stress cracks increased significantly as harvest moisture increased within the drying air temperatures of 49, 71, and 93° C. Carrier activation and mobility were studied by Raman spectroscopy and the Hall effect in pulsed laser annealed samples of GaAs implanted with doses of Si and Se from 2.2. x 10¹² to 6.0 x 10¹⁴ cm^-2. The samples were annealed using a pulsed XeCl excimer laser ( = 308 nm) and a pulsed dye laser (=728 nm) with energy densities from 0.06 to 0.9 J/cm² and pulse durations of about 10 ns. Very high carrier concentrations of 3 x 10¹⁹ and 1.5 x 10¹⁹ cm^-3 were obtained for the best n-type GaAs …

A series of 23 intact core segments was obtained from two distinct deep subsurface geological formations, the Middendorf and the Cape Fear formations, underlying the southeastern coastal plain of South Carolina. The Middendorf formation in this region consists of permeable, saturated, sandy sediments; the Cape Fear formation consists mainly of less permeable sediments. The core segments were separated by vertical distances ranging from several centimeters to 48 m. Samples of pore fluids and leachates were obtained from a large fly ash field lysimeter in central Pennsylvania. The fly ash in the lysimeter was usually only partially saturated, and only 0.3 pore volumes of water leached through the lysimeter during the 3-year study period. The samples were analyzed for major and trace inorganic anions and cations. The resulting analyses were modeled by using an equilibrium speciation/solubility code to test the hypothesis that the solubilities of at least some species in the fly ash leachate were controlled by solid phases. The sorption of three hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) was investigated on hematite and kaolinite that had been coated with natural humic substances over a mass percent carbon range of 0.01-0.5%. Increasing quantities of sorbed humic substances increased the sorption of HOC. Anthracene, the most hydrophobic HOC, showed the greatest sorption enhancement, while the most aromatic coating, peat humic acid, was the strongest sorbent. The molecular dynamics technique is used to study the spectral response of a polyethylene chain in a crystal environment under a mechanical deformation. The MUSIC method, which was previously shown to accurately compute dispersion curves from the time-dependent structure factor, is used. A complete characterization of frequency shifts is presented for various lamellar thickness, temperatures, stress (or pressure), and mass defects.

The stability of laminar flow between concentric cylinders is analyzed. Conhinrd Poiseuille and Couette flows are considered. It is shown that instabilities exist if the laminar flow is synnetric or near-spaetric on part of the annulus. Instabilities are reported for aspect ratios as small as q = 0.001.

Enzyme, specificalty lipases and proteases, have been used to selectively separate a variety of organic acids; however, multiple steps are usually required,Vn additiun, carbonic anhydrase has been usd in a variety of Eiquid membranes for transport of CO2.) The adsorption of quinoline and aminonaphthalene was investigated from aqueous solution on amorphous silica SiO₂. Amorphous SiO₂ was not a strong adsorbent of these compounds and quinoline was adsorbed more strongly than aminonaphthalene. The adsorption of both compounds varied with pH. A maximum in adsorption occurred near their respective pK_a's. Temperature effects were significant, suggesting enthalpy contributions in the range of H bonding. Both compounds appeared to adsorb via identical mechanisms that included H bonding and ion exchange.
