Soil microorganisms provide key ecological functions that often rely on metabolic interactions between individual populations of the soil microbiome. To better understand these interactions and community processes, we used chitin, a major carbon and nitrogen source in soil, as a test substrate to investigate microbial interactions during its decomposition. Chitin was applied to a model soil consortium that we developed, “model soil consortium-2” (MSC-2), consisting of eight members of diverse phyla and including both chitin degraders and nondegraders. A multiomics approach revealed how MSC-2 community-level processes during chitin decomposition differ from monocultures of the constituent species. Emergent properties of both …

COVID-19 caused by the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus taking a huge toll on global health and caused life-threatening medical complications and elevated mortality rates, especially among older adults and people with existing morbidity. Current evidence suggests that the virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets emitted by infected persons when breathing, coughing, sneezing, or speaking. These droplets can reach another person through their mouth, nose, or eyes, resulting in infection. The "gold standard'' for clinical diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 is the laboratory-based nucleic acid amplification test, which includes the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test on nasopharyngeal swab samples. The main concerns …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Thermal sensing provides rapid and accurate estimation of crop water stress through canopy temperature data. Canopy temperature is highly dependent on the transpiration rate of the leaves. It is usually assumed that any reduction in crop evapotranspiration (ET) leads to crop yield loss. As a result, an increase in canopy temperature due to a decrease in crop ET would indicate crop yield loss. This research evaluated the hypothesis that crop water stress could be detected using canopy temperature measurements (increased leaf temperature) from infrared thermometers (IRTs) before incurring crop yield loss. This would be possible in a narrow range when …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A current challenge in 3D bioprinting of skin equivalents is to recreate the distinct basal and suprabasal layers and promote their direct interactions. Such a structural arrangement is essential to establish 3D stratified epidermis disease models, such as for the autoimmune skin disease pemphigus vulgaris (PV), which targets the cell– cell junctions at the interface of the basal and suprabasal layers. Inspired by epithelial regeneration in wound healing, a method that combines 3D bioprinting and spatially guided self-reorganization of keratinocytes is developed to recapture the fine structural hierarchy that lies in the deep layers of the epidermis.Herein, keratinocyteladen fibrin hydrogels …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Bacteria in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can transfer antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to the bacteria in receiving water through conjugation; however, there is a lack of quantitative assessment of this phenomenon in continuous cultures. Our objective was to determine the effects of background nutrient levels in river water column and growth rates of bacteria on the conjugation frequency of ARGs from effluent bacteria to river bacteria, as well as on the resulting resistance level (i.e., MICs) of the river bacteria. Chemostats were employed to simulate the discharge points of WWTPs into rivers, where effluent bacteria (donor cells) …

Parasol: Efficient Parallel Synthesis Of Large Model Spaces, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Formal analysis is an invaluable tool for software engineers, yet state-of-the-art formal analysis techniques suffer from well-known limitations in terms of scalability. In particular, some software design domains—such as tradeoff analysis and security analysis—require systematic exploration of potentially huge model spaces, which further exacerbates the problem. Despite this present and urgent challenge, few techniques exist to support the systematic exploration of large model spaces. This paper introduces Parasol, an approach and accompanying tool suite, to improve the scalability of large-scale formal model space exploration. Parasol presents a novel parallel model space synthesis approach, backed with unsupervised learning to automatically derive …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Despite efforts to collect genomics and phenomics (“omics”) and environmental data, spatiotemporal availability and access to digital resources still limit our ability to predict plants’ response to changes in climate. Our goal is to quantify the improvement in the predictability of maize yields by enhancing climate data. Large-scale experiments such as the Genomes to Fields (G2F) are an opportunity to provide access to “omics” and climate data. Here, the objectives are to: (i) improve the G2F “omics” and environmental database by reducing the gaps of climate data using deep neural networks; (ii) estimate the contribution of climate and genetic database …

Intensifying permafrost thaw alters carbon cycling by mobilizing large amounts of terrestrial substrate into aquatic ecosystems. Yet, few studies have measured aquatic carbon fluxes and constrained drivers of ecosystem carbon balance across heterogeneous Arctic landscapes. Here, we characterized hydrochemical and landscape controls on fluvial carbon cycling, quantified fluvial carbon fluxes, and estimated fluvial contributions to ecosystem carbon balance across 33 watersheds in four ecoregions in the continuous permafrost zone of the western Canadian Arctic: unglaciated uplands, ice-rich moraine, and organic-rich lowlands and till plains. Major ions, stable isotopes, and carbon speciation and fluxes revealed patterns in carbon cycling across ecoregions …

Nonlinear Strong Coupling By Second-Harmonic Generation Enhancement In Plasmonic Nanopatch Antennas, Bryson Krause, Dhananjay Mishra, Jiyang Chen, Christos Argyropoulos, Thang Hoang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Enhanced electromagnetic fields within plasmonic nanocavity mode volumes enable multiple significant effects that lead to applications in both the linear and nonlinear optical regimes. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced second harmonic generation from individual plasmonic nanopatch antennas which are formed by separating silver nanocubes from a smooth gold film using a sub-10 nm zinc oxide spacer layer. When the nanopatch antennas are excited at their fundamental plasmon frequency, a 104-fold increase in the intensity of the second harmonic generation wave is observed. Moreover, by integrating quantum emitters that have an absorption energy at the fundamental frequency, a …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The natural tapering of coronary arteries often creates a dilemma for optimal balloon sizing during stenting. The influence of different balloon types, namely, a tapered balloon and a conventional cylindrical balloon, on the mechanical performance of the stent as well as arterial mechanics was investigated via the finite element method. Stent free-expansion and stent deployment in a stenotic tapered artery were investigated numerically. The biomechanical behavior of the two balloon types was compared in terms of stent foreshortening, stent deformation, stent stress distribution, and arterial wall stress distribution. Results indicate that balloon types affect the transient behavior of the stent …

The ability to microscopically image diseased or damaged tissue throughout a longitudinal study in living mice would provide more insight into disease progression than having just a couple of time points to study. In vivo disease development and monitoring provides more insight than in vitro studies as well. In this study, we developed permanent 3D-printed, surgically implantable abdominal imaging windows (AIWs) to allow for longitudinal imaging of deep-lying tissues or organs in the abdominal cavity of living mice. They are designed to prevent organ movement while allowing the animal to behave normally throughout longitudinal studies. The AIW also acts as …

A number of tests focused on the behavior of the stringers resting on transverse members (a floorbeam), a system akin to a grillage. The system was proportioned with the expectation that stringer lateral-torsional buckling, a key steel …

Feed Forward Neural Networks With Asymmetric Training, Archit Srivastava Aug 2022

Feed Forward Neural Networks With Asymmetric Training, Archit Srivastava

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Our work presents a new perspective on training feed-forward neural networks(FFNN). We introduce and formally define the notion of symmetry and asymmetry in the context of training of FFNN. We provide a mathematical definition to generalize the idea of sparsification and demonstrate how sparsification can induce asymmetric training in FFNN.

In FFNN, training consists of two phases, forward pass and backward pass. We define symmetric training in FFNN as follows-- If a neural network uses the same parameters for both forward pass and backward pass, then the training is said to be symmetric.

The definition of asymmetric training in artificial …

A New Implementation Of Federated Learning For Privacy And Security Enhancement, Xiang Ma, Haijian Sun, Rose Qingyang Hu, Yi Qian

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the ever-increasing concerns on personal data privacy and the rapidly growing data volume at local clients, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a new machine learning setting.
