Formation Of 2-Chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile (Cs Riot Control Agent) Thermal Degradation Products At Elevated Temperatures, Timothy A. Kluchinsky, Michael Sheely, Paul B B. Savage, Philip A. Smith

United States Army: Publications

2-Chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile (CS riot control agent) has been shown to produce a number of thermal degradation products when dispersed at high temperature. We hypothesized that these CS-derived compounds are formed by energy input from heating during the dispersion process. Here we identified organic CS-derived compounds formed from purified CS subjected to temperatures ranging from 300 to 900 degrees C in an inert atmosphere with analysis of tube furnace effluent by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. We conclude that the production of many CS-derived compounds previously observed during high-temperature dispersion is likely to be heat related.

Solitary Waves And Supersonic Reaction Front In Metastable Solids, Hendrik J. Viljoen, Lee L. Lauderback, Didier Sornette Jan 2002

Solitary Waves And Supersonic Reaction Front In Metastable Solids, Hendrik J. Viljoen, Lee L. Lauderback, Didier Sornette

Papers in Solid Phase Dynamics

Motivated by an increasing number of remarkable experimental observations on the role of pressure and shear stress in solid reactions, explosions, and detonations, we present a simple one-dimensional model that embodies nonlinear elasticity and dispersion as well as chemical or phase transformation. This generalization of the Toda lattice provides an effective model for the description of the organization during an abrupt transformation in a solid. One of the challenges is to capture both the equilibrium degrees of freedom as well as to quantify the possible role of out-of-equilibrium perturbations. In the Toda lattice, we verify that the particle velocities converge …

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen Jan 2002

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

XML is becoming the data exchange standard on the Internet. Previously proposed XML query languages, such as XQuery, Quilt, YALT, Lorel, and XML-QL, lack schema definition of the query result; therefore, they are limited for defining views, integrating data, updating, and further querying, all of which are often needed in e-Business applications. We propose a novel XML query language called CXQuery, which defines the schema of the query results explicitly and can easily define views, and integrate, update, and query XML data. In addition, CXQuery can express spatial and spatio-temporal queries using a constraint-based querying approach.

Use Of Pyrolysis Gc/Ms For Predicting Emission Byproducts From The Incineration Of Double-Base Propellant, Donald Cropek, Patricia Kemme, Jean Day, Jane Cochran Jan 2002

Use Of Pyrolysis Gc/Ms For Predicting Emission Byproducts From The Incineration Of Double-Base Propellant, Donald Cropek, Patricia Kemme, Jean Day, Jane Cochran

United States Army: Publications

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to analyze the pyrolytic byproducts from an Army-unique propellant compound (AA2) that is composed of predominantly nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. Compounds produced by AA2 pyrolysis were compared to compounds detected in the gaseous effluent from AA2 incineration. The light permanent gases and most of the higher molecular weight byproducts produced by AA2 incineration are replicated by laboratory pyrolysis on AA2. The reverse case also holds whereby 18 out of 24 high molecular weight AA2 pyrolytic byproducts are found in the incinerator emissions. Poor matching, however, was obtained between the two processes for the volatile, water-soluble species. …

Managing Runoff Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse, Bahman Eghball Jan 2002

Managing Runoff Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse, Bahman Eghball

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Rainfall patterns, soil factors, topography, climate, and land use may all influence runoff. To minimize environmental concerns, excessive runoff should be avoided on areas where manure has been applied. Management practices used to control runoff include contouring, strip cropping, conservation tillage, terraces, and buffer strips. In some cases, secondary containment systems, sedimentation basins, or ponds may be necessary to collect runoff. More than one runoff-control practice may be necessary for protection in areas with high runoff potential. Soil properties, including infiltration, may be improved by manure application. The method, rate and timing of manure application should be considered to reduce …

A Scoping Study Of Water Quality Conditions In The Missouri National Recreational River Reach From Near Gavins Point Dam To Ponca State Park, Nebraska

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The unchannelized reach of the Missouri River below Gavins Point Dam has several ongoing water resource management issues that involve and affect the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). Water quality management considerations are of particular importance to three issues: 1) management of a portion of the reach as a recreational river under the Federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, 2) the reach is included in an action area identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under the Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) for three species (pallid sturgeon, least tern, and piping plover) identified as being in jeopardy, …

Use Of Snow-Covered Ranges To Estimate Explosives Residues From High-Order Detonations Of Army Munitions, Thomas F. Jenkins, Marianne E. Walsh, Paul H. Miyares, Alan D. Hewitt, Nicholas H. Collins, Thomas A. Ranney Jan 2002

Use Of Snow-Covered Ranges To Estimate Explosives Residues From High-Order Detonations Of Army Munitions, Thomas F. Jenkins, Marianne E. Walsh, Paul H. Miyares, Alan D. Hewitt, Nicholas H. Collins, Thomas A. Ranney

United States Army: Publications

Estimation of the amounts of residues resulting from high-order detonation of munitions is complicated by the presence of residues from previous detonations and the inability to easily obtain adequately-sized samples to overcome spatial heterogeneity in residue deposition. This study was conducted to assess the use of snow-covered ranges to provide these types of estimates. Specifically, snow-covered ranges were used to estimate the amount of explosives residues that resulted from detonation of individual mortar rounds and a small antipersonnel land mine. At Fort Drum, NY, 60 mm mortars were fired and at Camp Ethan Allen, VT, 81 mm mortars and a …

Computing Small-Fleet Aircraft Availabilities Including Redundancy And Spares, Jeffery K. Cochran, Theodore P. Lewis Jan 2002

Computing Small-Fleet Aircraft Availabilities Including Redundancy And Spares, Jeffery K. Cochran, Theodore P. Lewis

United States Air Force: Publications

Logistics support is a key element of aircraft transportation systems. This paper is concerned with the impact of aircraft spares provisioning decisions on the availability of aircraft. Spares provisioning in this context is complicated by the fact that spares may be shared across aircraft and that aircraft may have redundant systems. In addition, decisions concerning aircraft spares support require a rapid response for safety reasons. Analytical models have proven to provide a quicker response time than corresponding simulation models. There is an existing analytical model that includes the effect of redundancy and spares, but the underlying assumption is that a …

African-American infant victims and perpetrators were over-represented. Younger victims were more likely to have been previously …

Biomineralization Of Poorly Crystalline Fe(Iii) Oxides By Dissimilatory Metal Reducing Bacteria (Dmrb), John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, James K. Fredrickson, Yuri A. Gorby, Steven C. Smith Jan 2002

Biomineralization Of Poorly Crystalline Fe(Iii) Oxides By Dissimilatory Metal Reducing Bacteria (Dmrb), John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, James K. Fredrickson, Yuri A. Gorby, Steven C. Smith

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB) catalyze the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in anoxic soils, sediments, and groundwater. Two-line ferrihydrite is a bioavailable Fe(III) oxide form that is exploited by DMRB as a terminal electron acceptor. A wide variety of biomineralization products result from the interaction of DMRB with 2-line ferrihydrite. Here we describe the state of knowledge on the biotransformation of synthetic 2-line ferrihydrite by laboratory cultures of DMRB using select published data and new experimental results. A facultative DMRB is emphasized (Shewanella putrefaciens) upon which most of this work has been performed. Key factors controlling the identity of …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The reduction kinetics of Fe(III)citrate, Fe(III)NTA, Co(III)EDTA−, U(VI)O22+, Cr(VI)O42−, and Tc(VII)O4− were studied in cultures of dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB): Shewanella alga strain BrY, Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32, Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1, and Geobacter metallireducens strain GS-15. Reduction rates were metal specific with the following rate trend: Fe (III)citrate ≥ Fe(III)NTA > Co(III)EDTA− ›› UO2 2+ > CrO42− > TcO4−, except for CrO42− when H2 was used as electron donor. The metal reduction rates were also electron donor dependent with faster rates …

Influence Of Mn Oxides On The Reduction Of Uranium(Vi) By The Metal-Reducing Bacterium Shewanella Putrefaciens, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, David Kennedy, Chongxuan Liu, Martine Duff, Douglas Hunter, Alice Dohnalkova Jan 2002

Influence Of Mn Oxides On The Reduction Of Uranium(Vi) By The Metal-Reducing Bacterium Shewanella Putrefaciens, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, David Kennedy, Chongxuan Liu, Martine Duff, Douglas Hunter, Alice Dohnalkova

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The potential for Mn oxides to modify the biogeochemical behavior of U during reduction by the subsurface bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32 was investigated using synthetic Mn(III/IV) oxides (pyrolusite [β-MnO2], bixbyite [Mn2O3] and K+-birnessite [K4Mn14O27 • 8H2O]). In the absence of bacteria, pyrolusite and bixbyite oxidized biogenic uraninite (UO2[s]) to soluble U(VI) species, with bixbyite being the most rapid oxidant. The Mn(III/IV) oxides lowered the bioreduction rate of U(VI) relative to rates in their absence or in the presence of gibbsite …

Sorption Of Cs+ To Micaceous Subsurface Sediments From The Hanford Site, Usa, John M. Zachara, Steven Smith, Chongxuan Liu, James Mckinley, R. Jeffrey Serne, Paul Gassman

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The sorption of Cs+ was investigated over a large concentration range (10-9–10-2 mol/L) on subsurface sediments from a United States nuclear materials site (Hanford) where high-level nuclear wastes (HLW) have been accidentally released to the vadose zone. The sediment sorbs large amounts of radiocesium, but expedited migration has been observed when HLW (a NaNO3 brine) is the carrier. Cs+ sorption was measured on homoionic sediments (Na+, K+, Ca2+) with electrolyte concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 mol/L. In Na+ electrolyte, concentrations were extended to near saturation with …

Synoptic Assessment Of Wetland Function: A Planning Tool For Protection Of Wetland Species Biodiversity, E. William Schweiger, Scott Leibowitz, Jeffrey Hyman, Walt E. Foster, Marla C. Downing

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

We present a synoptic assessment intended to maximize the benefits to wetland species biodiversity gained through Clean Water Act regulatory efforts within 225 sub-basins in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas (US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7), USA. Our assessment provides a method for prioritizing sub-basins potentially critical for supporting wetland species biodiversity and may assist environmental managers and conservationists constrained by limited resources. We prioritize sub-basins based on the projected increase in the risk of wetland species extirpation across Region 7 that would be avoided by applying a unit of regulatory protection effort within a sub-basin. Because the projected increase …

Using Mussel Isotope Ratios To Assess Anthropogenic Nitrogen Inputs To Freshwater Ecosystems, R. A. Mckinney, J.L. Lake, M. A. Charpentier, S. Ryba

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Stable nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) of freshwater mussels from a series of lakes and ponds were related to watershed land use characteristics to assess their utility in determining the source of nitrogen inputs to inland water bodies. Nitrogen isotope ratios measured in freshwater mussels from 19 lakes and ponds in Rhode Island, U.S.A., ranged from 4.9–12.6% and were found to significantly correlate with the fraction of residential development in 100 and 200 m buffer zones around the ponds. Mussel δ15N values in 12 of the 19 ponds also showed significant correlation with average dissolved nitrate concentrations, …

Implementation And Validation Of Range Imaging On A Uhf Radar Wind Profiler, P. B. Chilson, Tian-You Yu, Richard G. Strauch, Andreas Muschinski, Robert D. Palmer

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The available range resolution of pulsed radar wind profilers is usually limited by bandwidth restrictions. Range imaging (RIM) has recently been developed as a means of mitigating these limitations by operating the wind profilers over a small set of distinct transmitter frequencies. A constrained optimization method can then be used to generate high-resolution maps of the reflectivity field as a function of range. This paper presents a description of how the RIM technique has been recently implemented on the Platteville 915-MHz tropospheric profiler, the first such implementation at UHF. Examples of data collected during a two-part experiment on 10 April …

An Approach To Sequence Dna Without Tagging, Sanjun Niu, Ravi F. Saraf Jan 2002

An Approach To Sequence Dna Without Tagging, Sanjun Niu, Ravi F. Saraf

Ravi Saraf Publications

Microarray technology is playing an increasingly important role in biology and medicine and its application to genomics for gene expression analysis has already reached the market with a variety of commercially available instruments. In these combinatorial analysis methods, known probe single-strand DNA (ssDNA) “primers” are attached in clusters of typically 100 μm × 100 μm pixels. Each pixel of the array has a slightly different sequence. On exposure to “unknown” target ssDNA, the pixels with the right complementary probe ssDNA sequence convert to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) by a hybridization reaction. To transduct the conversion of the pixel to dsDNA, the …
