Scarcely Populated Uwb-Ir Systems With Interleaved Coding-Modulation On Multipath Fading Channels, Michal M. Pietrzyk, Keni Popovski, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata J. Wysocki, Jos H. Weber
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Interleaved coding-modulation (ICM) is a recently proposed method for ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWBIR) systems. ICM exploits the concept of chip interleaving, allowing to alleviate the problem of inter-symbol and inter-pulse interference commonly present in high data rate UWB-IR systems. In this paper, previous work on ICM is extended to scarcely populated multi-user scenarios. A novel design of a deterministic chip interleaver based on time-hopping hyperbolic congruence sequences is proposed. Furthermore, the main parameters of the random and hyperbolic interleavers are reviewed. The obtained results indicate that the proposed type of interleaver yields similar performance to random interleavers but with the …

Class Exercise For Assessing Abilities And Providing A Structure For A Course, Paul Savory
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials
I developed this class exercise to assess students abilities and to highlight the range of questions/issues that they will learn in my IMSE 440/840 (Discrete Event Computer Simulation) course. I draw a picture of the case scenario for students and explain the system’s operation to them. I then ask that they complete the questions regarding the system and/or how they would analyze it. Following class, I develop a summary of the range of student answers. At the next class session, I share the range of answers and share what my answers would be and how these questions/topics relate to what …

Performance Comparison Ofuwb Hopping Codes In A Multi-User Rich Scattering Environment, K. Popovski, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Ultra Wideband is a short-range wireless communication technique which has seen increased interest over the past decade. Having several methods of implementation, a key issue will always be the avoidance of multi-user interference. For time-hopped Ultra Wideband, this is achieved through the use of different codes assigned to each user, performing time-hopped code division multiple access.
This paper presents a performance comparison of several time hopping sequence construction methods. It presents correlation results between sequences, and simulation results in a Gaussian noise degraded, scattering rich multi-user environment. Simulations are based on the IEEE channel model for UWB communications.

This study investigates the structures of layers of amphiphilic diblock copolymers of poly(t-butyl styrene)-poly- (styrene sulfonate) (PtBS-PSS) adsorbed on both the bare mica surface (hydrophilic) and an octadecyltriethoxysilane (OTE)-modified mica surface (hydrophobic). When the surface is rendered hydrophobic, the nonsoluble block exhibits stronger interaction with the surface and higher adsorbed masses are achieved. Interaction forces between two such adsorbed layers on both substrates were measured using the surface forces apparatus. The effect of salt concentration (Cs) and molecular weight (N) on the height of the self-assembled layers (L0) was examined in each case. The resulting scaling relationship is …

The disposal of basic sodium aluminate and acidic U(VI)-Cu(II) wastes in the now-dry North and South 300 A Process Ponds at the Hanford site resulted in a groundwater plume of U(VI). To gain insight into the geochemical processes that occurred during waste disposal and those affecting the current and future fate and transport of this uranium plume, the solid-phase speciation of uranium in a depth sequence of sediments from the base of the North Process Pond through the vadose zone to groundwater was investigated using standard chemical and mineralogical analyses, electron and X-ray microprobe measurements, and X-ray absorption fine structure …

Field-Scale Demonstration Of Induced Biogeochemical Reductive Dechlorination At Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware, Lonnie G. Kennedy, Jess W. Everett, Erica Becvar, Donald Defeo
United States Air Force: Publications
Biogeochemical reductive dechlorination (BiRD) is a new remediation approach for chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs). The approach stimulates common sulfate-reducing soil bacteria, facilitating the geochemical conversion of native iron minerals into iron sulfides. Iron sulfides have the ability to chemically reduce many common CAH compounds including PCE, TCE, DCE, similar to zero valent iron (Fe0). Results of a field test at Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware, are given in this paper. BiRD was stimulated by direct injection of Epson salt (MgSO4·7H2O) and sodium (L) lactate (NaC3H5O3) in five …

A Measurement Of Electron-Wall Interactions Using Transmission Diffraction From Nanofabricated Gratings, Brett E. Barwick, Glen Gronniger, Lu Yuan, Sy-Hwang Liou, Herman Batelaan
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
Electron diffraction from metal coated freestanding nanofabricated gratings is presented, with a quantitative path integral analysis of the electron-grating interactions. Electron diffraction out to the 20th order was observed indicating the high quality of our nanofabricated gratings. The electron beam is collimated to its diffraction limit with ion-milled material slits. Our path integral analysis is first tested against single slit electron diffraction, and then further expanded with the same theoretical approach to describe grating diffraction. Rotation of the grating with respect to the incident electron beam varies the effective distance between the electron and grating bars. This allows the measurement …

Modeling Selected Properties Of Extruded Rice Flour And Rice Starch By Neural Networks And Statistics, G. Ganjyal, Milford A. Hanna, P. Supprung, A. Noomhorm, David D. Jones
Industrial Agricultural Products Center: Publications and Information
Rice flour and rice starch were single-screw extruded and selected product properties were determined. Neural network (NN) models were developed for prediction of individual product properties, which performed better than the regression models. Multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) models were developed to simultaneously predict five product properties or three product properties from three input parameters; they were extremely efficient in predictions with values of R2 > 0.95. All models were feed-forward backpropagation NN with three-layered networks with logistic activation function for the hidden layer and the output layers. Also, model parameters were very similar except for the number of …

The fact that in vivo the extracellular matrix or substratum with which cells interact often includes topography at the nanoscale underscores the importance of investigating cell-substrate interactions and performing cell culture at the submicron scale. An important and exciting direction of research in nanomedicine would be to gain an understanding and exploit the cellular response to nanostructures. Electrospinning is a simple and versatile technique that can produce a macroporous scaffold comprising randomly oriented or aligned nanofibers. It can also accommodate the incorporation of drug delivery function into the fibrous scaffold. Endowed with both topographical and biochemical signals such electrospun nanofibrous …

Understanding And Control Of Lateral Contraction In Stamping Lithography, Zheng Li, Li Tan, Gang-Yu Liu
Understanding And Control Of Lateral Contraction In Stamping Lithography, Zheng Li, Li Tan, Gang-Yu Liu
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
Thin film contraction under external mechanical stress can be used to miniaturize size and increase density of patterned features on top. Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis is used to provide guidance on this contraction process. It was found that the substrate contraction causes stress accumulation along interfaces between protruded features and substrate. These stress accumulation complexes the control of profile changes on patterned features and suggest a design of patterned features arranged beyond a critical distance to avoid cross-interference.

Thermally activated magnetization reversal is of great importance in areas such as permanent magnetism and magnetic recording. In spite of many decades of scientific research, the phenomenon of slow magnetization dynamics has remained partially controversial. It is now well-established that the main mechanism is thermally activated magnetization reversal, as contrasted to eddy currents and structural aging, but the identification of the involved energy barriers remains a challenge for many systems. Thermally activated slow magnetization processes proceed over energy barriers whose structure is determined by the micromagnetic free energy. This restricts the range of physically meaningful energy barriers. An analysis of …

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we illustrate how to modify the structure and magnetic properties of L10 FePt and PtMn films using ion-beam irradiation. Highly ordered L10 FePt and PtMn phases were achieved directly by using 2 MeV He-ion irradiation without conventional post-annealing. A high ion-beam current density (~μA/cm2 ) was used to achieve direct beam heating on samples. This irradiation-induced heating process provides efficient microscopic energy transfer and creates excess point defects, which significantly enhances the diffusion and promotes the formation of the ordered L10 phase. In-plane coercivity of FePt films greater than 5700 Oe could be …

Surface Segregation In Multicomponent Clusters, Peter A. Dowben, Ning Wu, Natalie Palina, H. Modrow, R. Müller, J. Hormes, Yaroslav B. Losovyj
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
Nanostructured materials are not immune from surface segregation, as can be shown for solid samples made from nanosized BaFe12-2xCoxTixO19 barium ferrite particles and a variety of free clusters. Both theory and experiment provide ample demonstration that very limited dimensions of very small clusters does not necessarily impart stability against surface and grain boundary segregation. In fact, with the larger surface to volume ratio in small clusters and lower average atomic coordination, we anticipate that compositional instabilities in small clusters will readily occur.

Force Protection Using Composite Sandwich Structures, R. L. Sierakowski, M. L. Hughes
United States Air Force: Publications
In the recent past, advances have been made in the attempt to utilize composite materials as components in protective structures such as those employed by the Air Force to secure critical military assets. In such applications, where lightweight materials that exhibit large levels of energy absorption and high strength/stiffness characteristics are desirable, composite sandwich constructions offer an attractive solution.
In an attempt to evaluate the suitability of certain sandwich structures for use in force protection applications, several sandwich constructions with somewhat novel core materials were identified. A group of thermoplastic core materials have been developed that possess features of both …

Photoionization Of Xenon Clusters, John D. Bozek, Bruce S. Rude, A. L. D. Kilcoyne
United States Department of Energy: Publications
High resolution photoelectron spectra of xenon clusters of about 100 atoms, measured with photon energies of 20 to 60 eV are reported. Peaks due to the clusters are observed at lower binding energies than the corresponding atomic lines and exhibit different behaviors. The peak associated with the Xe 5p1/2 state at higher binding energy is relatively unchanged with photon energy whereas the Xe 5p3/2 peak changes its shape with increasing photon energy. The change is attributed to differences in the escape depth of the electrons at different kinetic energies and the bulk and surface components of the cluster.
