Stochastic Optimal Control In Nonlinear Systems, Celestin Nkundineza
Stochastic Optimal Control In Nonlinear Systems, Celestin Nkundineza
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Stochastic control is an important area of research in engineering systems that undergo disturbances. Controlling individual states in such systems is critical. The present investigation is concerned with the application of the stochastic optimal control strategy developed by To (2010) and its implementation as well as providing computed results of linear and nonlinear systems under stationary and nonstationary random excitations. In the strategy the feedback matrix is designed based on the achievement of the objectives for individual states in the system through the application of the Lyapunov equation for the system. Each diagonal element in the gain or associated gain …

The Relation Between The Arterial Stress And Restenosis Rate After Coronary Stenting, Linxia Gu, Shijia Zhao, Aswini K. Muttyam, James M. Hammel
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Two commercially available stents (the Palmaz–Schatz (PS) and S670 stents) with reported high and low restenosis rates, respectively, have been investigated in this paper. Finite element models simulating the stent, plaque, and artery interactions in 3 mm stenosed right coronary arteries were developed. These models were used to determine the stress field in artery walls after stent implantation. The material properties of porcine arteries were measured and implemented in the numerical models. The stress concentration induced in the artery by the PS stent was found to be more than double that of the S670 stent. It demonstrated a good correlation …
The Other Gulf Oil Crisis - In Southwest Asia, Adam Liska
The Other Gulf Oil Crisis - In Southwest Asia, Adam Liska
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a rude reminder of the risks inherent in an economy dependent upon petroleum. But there's a quieter crisis in the other gulf - the Persian Gulf - that should call Americans' attention to the even more severe consequences of relying upon imported oil. The costs of using the military to protect the transport of oil from the most turbulent part of the world should convince our country's policymakers to increase investments in researching and developing affordable, American-made clean-burning alternative fuels. But, first, we have to understand the real causes, costs and …
Experimental Investigation Of Folded Plate Girders And Slab Joints Used In Modular Construction, Kyle A. Burner
Experimental Investigation Of Folded Plate Girders And Slab Joints Used In Modular Construction, Kyle A. Burner
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The folded plate girder, a newly proposed bridge girder, is investigated through this thesis. The folded plate girder is cold bent out of a single sheet of steel. The cold bending eliminates the costly and inconsistent shop welds found in traditional girders. The folded plate girder is meant for application in short span bridges. The girder was subjected to an equivalent 75 year lifetime loading to investigate the fatigue performance.
The rebar detail used in the closure region between adjacent slabs has been investigated in the past by the NCHRP 12-68 project. This thesis will proposes a hooked rebar detail …
Constructability Testing Of Folded Plate Girders, Luke A. Glaser
Constructability Testing Of Folded Plate Girders, Luke A. Glaser
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A new steel girder bridge system was developed at the University of Nebraska. The innovative girder design is a box girder folded from a single steel plate that has a trapezoid shape with an opening on the bottom. The girder has application in short span bridges and accelerated construction situations. The structural performance of the girder requires investigation in all stages of a bridge’s lifecycle. This thesis contains descriptions and results from the first two tests from a series of tests developed to evaluate this new girder shape. The objective of these two tests was to investigate the constructability of …

Diffuse Ultrasonic Scattering In Advanced Composites, Christer Stenström
Diffuse Ultrasonic Scattering In Advanced Composites, Christer Stenström
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Non destructive testing (NDT) is a noninvasive technique used for characterization and inspection of the integrity of objects. NDT is an important tool for research, manufacturing monitoring and in-service inspections. Ultrasonic testing is the most used NDT technique, which for advanced composites can identify several types of defects, like delamination and interlaminar cracks. Diffuse ultrasonics has shown to be able to extract information at the microscale of metals and therefore it is believed it can be used for advanced composites to extract microstructural information, i.e. at the level of fibers.
In this thesis, diffuse ultrasonic methods, together with spatial variance …

Material Modeling And Analysis For The Development Of A Realistic Blast Headform, S. G. M. Hossain
Material Modeling And Analysis For The Development Of A Realistic Blast Headform, S. G. M. Hossain
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Blast traumatic brain injury (BTBI) has become an important topic of study because of the increase of such incidents, especially due to the recent growth of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This thesis discusses a project in which laboratory testing of BTBI was made possible by performing blast loading on experimental models simulating the human head. Three versions of experimental models were prepared – one having a simple geometry and the other two having geometry similar to a human head. For developing the head models, three important parts of the head were considered for material modeling and analysis – the skin, …
Simsight: A Virtual Machine Based Dynamic Call Graph Generator, Xueling Chen
Simsight: A Virtual Machine Based Dynamic Call Graph Generator, Xueling Chen
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
One problem with using component-based software development approach is that once software modules are reused over generations of products, they form legacy structures that can be challenging to understand, making validating these systems difficult. Therefore, tools and methodologies that enable engineers to see interactions of these software modules will enhance their ability to make these software systems more dependable. To address this need, we propose SimSight, a framework to capture dynamic call graphs in Simics, a widely adopted commercial full-system simulator. Simics is a software system that simulates complete computer systems. Thus, it performs nearly identical tasks to …
Managing Large Data Sets Using Support Vector Machines, Ranjini Srinivas
Managing Large Data Sets Using Support Vector Machines, Ranjini Srinivas
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Hundreds of Terabytes of CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) data are being accumulated for storage day by day at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which is one of the eight US CMS Tier-2 sites. Managing this data includes retaining useful CMS data sets and clearing storage space for newly arriving data by deleting less useful data sets. This is an important task that is currently being done manually and it requires a large amount of time. The overall objective of this study was to develop a methodology to help identify the data sets to be deleted when there is a requirement for …
Time Dependence Of Self-Assembly Process For The Formation Of Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Nanolayers, Alexandre Dhôtel
Time Dependence Of Self-Assembly Process For The Formation Of Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Nanolayers, Alexandre Dhôtel
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There is increasing interest in self-assembled materials for energy storage, flexible electronics and hydrophobic barriers. Inorganic/organic hybrid thin films and especially organosilane-based coatings already have demonstrated their ability to achieve those goals. However, some fundamental points of their formation process by molecular self-assembly remain unexplained. Although the literature widely reports the effect of temperature on the final nanostructure, until now, no one has taken into account the importance of time during their synthesis.
The main objective of this study was to improve and complete the understanding of mechanisms responsible for the self-organization of organic/inorganic molecules into a highly ordered, layered …

Development Of Advanced Finite Element Material Models For Cable Barrier Wire Rope, John D. Reid, Karla A. Lechtenberg, Cody S. Stolle
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
An improved LS-DYNA model of ¾-in. (19-mm) diameter 3x7 wire rope commonly used in roadside cable guardrail installations has been developed. A Belytschko-Schwer beam element was selected along with material *MAT_166. Numerical noise was reduced using part stiffness damping with a coefficient of 2%, and frequency range damping with a coefficient of 12%. The optimum element length based on timestep, accuracy, and computational cost was determined to be between 0.4 and 0.8 in. (10-20 mm). Dynamic component tests were conducted on wire rope to determine material properties. These tests were simulated and the results compared to the physical tests. The …
Evaluation Of Ethanol And Water Introduction Via Fumigation On Efficiency And Emissions Of A Compression Ignition Engine Using An Atomization Technique, Grant S. Janousek
Evaluation Of Ethanol And Water Introduction Via Fumigation On Efficiency And Emissions Of A Compression Ignition Engine Using An Atomization Technique, Grant S. Janousek
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Performance of a diesel engine, equipped for ethanol and water fumigation, was studied. The method implemented allowed for non-destructive introduction of liquids in advance of the turbocharger. Engine torque, speed, emission components, diesel and ethanol fuel rates were recorded and analyzed for each mixture of inputs. Based on the results of the study, thermal efficiency was not significantly different from the baseline diesel performance when using several ethanol and water mixtures. On the other hand, ethanol fumigation caused a significant reduction in NOx emissions and an increase in HC and CO emissions. No significant changes in CO2 or O2 occurred.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment on anthocyanin extraction from red cabbage using water as a solvent. Mashed cabbage was placed in a batch treatment chamber and subjected to PEF (2.5 kV/cm electric field strength; 15 μs pulse width and 50 pulses, specific energy 15.63 J/g). Extracted anthocyanin concentrations (16 to 889 μg/mL) were determined using HPLC. Heat and light stabilities of the control and PEF-treated samples, having approximately the same initial concentrations, were studied. PEF treatments enhanced total anthocyanin extraction in water from red cabbage by 2.15 times with a higher …
Jvm-Based Techniques For Improving Java Observability, Peng Du
Jvm-Based Techniques For Improving Java Observability, Peng Du
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Observability measures the support of computer systems to accurately capture, analyze, and present (collectively observe) the internal information about the systems. Observability frameworks play important roles for program understanding, troubleshooting, performance diagnosis, and optimizations. However, traditional solutions are either expensive or coarse-grained, consequently compromising their utility in accommodating today’s increasingly complex software systems. New solutions are emerging for VM-based languages due to the full control language VMs have over program executions. Existing such solutions, nonetheless, still lack flexibility, have high overhead, or provide limited context information for developing powerful dynamic analyses. In this thesis, we present a VM-based infrastructure, called …
A Framework For Automatically Repairing Gui Test Suites, Si Huang
A Framework For Automatically Repairing Gui Test Suites, Si Huang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Testing is an effective means for assuring the quality of software. In programs with Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), event sequences serve as test cases for executing system tests. To aid in the test generation process, researchers have developed methods that automatically derive graph models from GUIs, which can then be traversed to create sequences for testing. Recent advances using these graph models incorporate combinatorial interaction testing sampling techniques to generate longer GUI test cases, which exercise more event interactions and have been shown to improve fault detection. However, because the models extracted are only approximations of the actual event interactions, …

A Needs Assessment Of Highway Stakeholders Of An At-Grade Highway–Railroad Intersection In Lincoln, Nebraska, Ryan Haas
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has deployed a data collection test bed along a rail
corridor in the City of Lincoln. The test bed spans about 2.5 miles along the corridor
which parallels Cornhusker Highway, with the focus placed on the Adams Street
highway rail grade crossing (HRGC). The test bed currently has some data-collecting
capabilities, but the possibility exists that there is additional data that could be useful to
various users of the rail crossings.
To gauge these possible unmet data needs of highway stakeholders, a needs
assessment was carried out by the author. A comprehensive literature review was done …
Impact Of Bottom Flange Confinement Reinforcement On Performance Of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders, Quinton Patzlaff
Impact Of Bottom Flange Confinement Reinforcement On Performance Of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders, Quinton Patzlaff
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For many years AASHTO provided no recommendation to state DOT’s on bottom flange confinement reinforcement for their bridge superstructures. The 1996 edition of AASHTO Standard Specification for Highway Bridges stated that nominal reinforcement be placed to enclose the prestressing steel from the end of the girder for at least a distance equal to the girder’s height. A few years later the 2004 AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification changed the distance over which the confinement was to be distributed from 1.0h to 1.5h, and gave minimum requirements for the amount of steel to be used, No.3 bars, and their maximum spacing, …

Fracture Of Bone Using Microindentation, Séverine Vennin
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Osteoporosis is a current disease which is especially of concern to post-menopausal women. It is characterized by a decrease of bone density and an increase in the risk of fracture. Interest in the fracture mechanisms with respect to the underlying biological structure of the bone is of great interest to researchers in this field. In this thesis, a new method based on microindentation on rat femurs was developed to determine the relation between the viscoelastic and the fracture properties of bone. The main goal is to measure the viscoelastic properties by using a dynamic mechanical analysis indentation method and then …
Characterization, Modeling, And Consequences Of The Development During Plastic Flow Of Large Anisotropy In The Wave-Speeds, Quentin Fichot
Characterization, Modeling, And Consequences Of The Development During Plastic Flow Of Large Anisotropy In The Wave-Speeds, Quentin Fichot
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There is a substantial change in the anisotropy of some glassy polymers when they are subjected to large plastic deformations. The most pronounced case probably is seen in polycarbonate (PC), which is a tough thermoplastic used for many structural applications, including as a protective transparent armor for such applications as bulletproof glass. This development of anisotropy in the elastic response can be of the same order as the applied strains, and, therefore, becomes important in problems that show substantial plastic flow. In spite of this, this characteristic of glassy polymers has not been included in the current models. We propose …

INVESTIGATION INTO CURRENT EFFICIENCY FOR PULSE ELECTROCHEMICAL MACHINING OF NICKEL ALLOY
Yu Zhang, M.S.
University of Nebraska, 2010
Adviser: Kamlakar P. Rajurkar
Electrochemical machining (ECM) is a nontraditional manufacturing process that can machine difficult-to-cut materials. In ECM, material is removed by controlled electrochemical dissolution of an anodic workpiece in an electrochemical cell. ECM has extensive applications in automotive, petroleum, aerospace, textile, medical, and electronics industries.
Improving current efficiency is a challenging task for any electro-physical or electrochemical machining processes. The current efficiency is defined as the ratio of the observed amount of metal dissolved to the theoretical amount predicted from …
Measurement, Simulation, And Analysis Of The Mechanical Response Of Railroad Track, Curt J. Greisen
Measurement, Simulation, And Analysis Of The Mechanical Response Of Railroad Track, Curt J. Greisen
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Increased railroad traffic volumes, speeds, and axle loads have created a need to better measure track quality. Previous research has indicated that the vertical track deflection provides a meaningful indicator of track integrity. The measured deflection can be related to the bending stresses in the rail as well as characterize the mechanical response of the track.
This investigation summarizes the simulation, analysis and development of a measurement system at the University of Nebraska (UNL) to measure vertical track deflection in real-time from a car moving at revenue speeds. The UNL system operates continuously over long distances and in revenue service. …
Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Neodymium–Iron–Boron Clusters, Jeremy J. Anderson
Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Neodymium–Iron–Boron Clusters, Jeremy J. Anderson
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Using inert gas condensation techniques the properties of sputtered neodymium-iron-born clusters were investigated. A D.C. magnetron sputtering source created vaporous Nd-Fe-B which was then condensed into clusters and deposited onto silicon substrates. A composite target of Nd-Fe-B discs on an iron plate and a composite target of Nd-(Fe-Co)-B were utilized to create clusters. The clusters were coated with a carbon layer through R.F. sputtering to prevent oxidation.
Samples were investigated in the TEM and showed a size distribution with an average particle diameter of 8.11 nm. The clusters, upon deposition, were amorphous as indicated by diffuse diffraction patterns obtained through …

PREPARATION OF COATED MICROTOOLS FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL MACHINING APPLICATIONS
Ajaya K. Swain, M.S. University of Nebraska, 2010
Advisor: K.P. Rajurkar
Coated tools have improved the performance of both traditional and nontraditional machining processes and have resulted in higher material removal, better surface finish, and increased wear resistance. However, a study on the performance of coated tools in micromachining has not yet been adequately conducted. One possible reason is the difficulties associated with the preparation of coated microtools. Besides the technical requirement, economic and environmental aspects of the material and the coating technique used also play a significant role in coating microtools. …
