Improving Health Care Quality And Safety: The Development And Assessment Of Laparoscopic Surgery Instrumentation, Practices And Procedures, Bernadette Mccrory
Improving Health Care Quality And Safety: The Development And Assessment Of Laparoscopic Surgery Instrumentation, Practices And Procedures, Bernadette Mccrory
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Adverse events due to medical errors are a leading cause of death in the United States exceeding the mortality rates of motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer and AIDS. Improvements can and should be made to reduce the rates of preventable surgical errors since they account for nearly half of all adverse events within hospitals. Although minimally invasive surgery has proven patient benefits such as reduced postoperative pain and hospital stay, its operative environment imposes substantial physical and cognitive strain on the surgeon increasing the risk of error. In order to mitigate errors and protect patients, a multidisciplinary approach was taken …
Probabilistic Qos Analysis In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunbo Wang
Probabilistic Qos Analysis In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunbo Wang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Emerging applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require real-time quality of service (QoS) guarantees to be provided by the network. Traditional analysis work only focuses on the first-order statistics, such as the mean and the variance of the QoS performance. However, due to unique characteristics of WSNs, a cross-layer probabilistic analysis of QoS performance is essential. In this dissertation, a comprehensive cross-layer probabilistic analysis framework is developed to investigate the probabilistic evaluation and optimization of QoS performance provided by WSNs. In this framework, the distributions of QoS performance metrics are derived, which are natural tools to discover the probabilities to …

Material Handling System For Robotic Natural Orifice Surgery, Jeff Midday
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) is a relatively new surgical approach which uses no external incisions, thereby improving cosmetic outcomes, decreasing overall recovery time and reducing the risk of external infection. In standard NOTES, flexible endoscopic tools have been used to carry out a variety of surgical procedures in the abdomen. As an alternative, miniature in vivo robots can be fully inserted into the peritoneal cavity and utilized to perform various surgical procedures. These in vivo robots eliminate tool triangulation issues, improve multi-tasking capabilities and greatly increase freedom and dexterity when compared to standard endoscopic and laparoscopic tools. One …

The Integration Of Propane Flaming And Mechanical Cultivation For Effective Weed Control In Agriculture, Brian D. Neilson
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Flaming is a thermal weed control method that can kill weeds within or between crop rows using heat. Mechanical cultivation is another weed control method which undercuts weeds between crop rows to kill them. A combination flamer/cultivator implement was designed to take advantage of the good qualities of both flaming and cultivation to provide excellent organic weed control.
Flaming hoods were designed in the spring of 2010 and retrofitted on an existing row crop cultivator. The hoods were tested in corn and soybean field studies in the summer of 2010. Of the seven treatments tested, a treatment of flaming combined …

More than 8 million U.S. jobs were lost during ‘The Great Recession’, pushing unemployment from 4.4% in 2007 to 10.2% in 2009. Nearly half of all job losses occurred among lower-skilled workers in construction and manufacturing industries. During this same period, however, jobs in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries grew an unprecedented 9%. As part of a $4.8M grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the University of Nebraska began development of a workforce transition program to ‘retool’ recession displaced workers for career opportunities in new and emerging green industries. To date, the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) of …
Efficient Precast/Prestressed Floor System For Building Construction, Eliya E. A. Henin
Efficient Precast/Prestressed Floor System For Building Construction, Eliya E. A. Henin
Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Precast floor systems provide a rapidly constructed solution to multi-story buildings that is economical, high quality, fire-resistant, and with excellent deflection and vibration characteristics. Conventional precast concrete floor system cannot compete with cast-in-place post tensioning flat slab floor systems when high span-to-depth ratio and flat soffit are required. This is due to the significant depth of standard precast beams, and use of column corbels and beam ledges. This research presents the development of a new precast concrete floor system that eliminates the limitations of conventional precast floor system and provides a competitive precast alternative to cast-in-place flat slab floor systems. …

Improved Models Of Cable-To-Post Attachments For High-Tension Cable Barriers, Robert W. Bielenberg, Cody S. Stolle, John D. Reid
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Computer simulation models were developed to analyze and evaluate a new cable-to-post attachment for high-tension cable barriers. The models replicated the performance of a keyway bolt currently used in the design of a high-tension cable median barrier being developed at the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility. Component tests of the keyway bolts were simulated and compared to the component test results. Accurate friction, fracture strain, and stress-strain material properties were determined for a solid element model of the keyway bolt by applying actual load curve measured from the test to a simulated pull cable. By simulating the material properties of the …

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Numerous tools and techniques for human performance modeling have been introduced in the field of human-computer interaction. With such tools comes the ability to model legacy applications. Models can be used to compare design ideas to existing applications, or to evaluate products against those of competitors. One such mod- eling tool, CogTool, allows user interface designers and analysts to mock up design ideas, demonstrate tasks, and obtain human performance predictions for those tasks. This is one step towards a simple and complete analysis process, but it still requires a large amount of manual work. Graphical user interface (GUI) testing tools …

Fluidized-Bed Gasification Of Dairy Manure By Box–Behnken Design, Hanjing Wu, Milford A. Hanna, David D. Jones
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Application of excessive animal manure to the land may cause some environmental problems such as eutrophication of surface waters, degradation of ground water quality, and threats to human health. This paper reports an experimental study on the technology of biomass gasification to treat animal waste by analyzing the effects of key operating parameters on gasification. In this research, dairy manure from the University of Nebraska dairy farm was first collected and dried, and then gasified in a fluidized-bed, laboratory-scale gasifier to generate syngas. The effects of three parameters, namely temperature, steam to biomass ratio (SBR) and the equivalence ratio (ER), …
Mapping Spatially Interpolated Precipitation, Reference Evapotranspiration, Actual Crop Evapotranspiration, And Net Irrigation Requirements In Nebraska: Part I. Precipitation And Reference Evapotranspiration, Vivek Sharma, Suat Irmak
Mapping Spatially Interpolated Precipitation, Reference Evapotranspiration, Actual Crop Evapotranspiration, And Net Irrigation Requirements In Nebraska: Part I. Precipitation And Reference Evapotranspiration, Vivek Sharma, Suat Irmak
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Precipitation and reference evapotranspiration are two important variables in hydrologic analyses, agricultural crop production, determining actual crop evapotranspiration and irrigation water requirements, and irrigation management. Both variables vary in space and time, and the weather networks that measure or quantify and report both variables are too sparse for practical applications by water resources planners, managers, and irrigators. Long-term (1986- 2009) average annual (January to December), seasonal (growing season, May to September), and monthly (May, June, July, August, and September) precipitation and Penman-Monteith-estimated alfalfa-reference evapotranspiration (ETref) were spatially interpolated and mapped for all 93 counties in Nebraska using the …

Beef cattle feedlots contain unconsolidated surface materials (loose manure pack) that accumulate during a feeding cycle. The effects of varying amounts of unconsolidated surface materials on runoff nutrient losses are not well understood. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare runoff nutrient losses from feedlot surfaces containing varying amounts of unconsolidated surface materials, (2) determine if differences in runoff nutrient losses exist among rainfall simulation runs, (3) relate runoff nutrient losses to selected feedlot soil characteristics, and (4) identify the effects of varying runoff rate on nutrient loss rates from feedlot surfaces. This study was conducted on 0.75 …
Synthesis Of Gallium Nitride By Laser-Assisted Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy, Matthew J. Mitchell
Synthesis Of Gallium Nitride By Laser-Assisted Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy, Matthew J. Mitchell
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For the past two decades, gallium nitride (GaN) has become one of the most studied materials in the fields of optics and electronics due to its unique properties.Currently available methods for the synthesis of GaN require a high substrate temperature of 1100 oC, which can lead to several issues including a high defect concentration and increased probability of cracking and warping of films due to differences in thermal expansion coefficients between the substrate and film. The high growth temperature also prevents the integration of GaN devices with CMOS fabrication techniques, which has a post-process temperature limit of ~575 oC. …
Wireless Communications Under Qos Constraints: Energy Efficiency, Power And Rate Control, And Throughput, Deli Qiao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation deals with various issues in wireless communications under statistical quality of service (QoS) constraints. Effective capacity, which provides the maximum constant arrival rate that a wireless channel can sustain while satisfying statistical QoS constraints, is adopted as the performance metric. Energy efficiency of point-to-point links is first studied by characterizing the spectral efficiency-bit energy tradeoff in the low-power and wideband regimes. Different transmission strategies (with variable or fixed rate) and power policies are studied. Then, the effective capacity region for fading multiple-access channels (MAC) is investigated for different transmission strategies: Superposition coding with successive decoding and time division …

Transversely Post-Tensioned Box-Beam System For Precast Parking Structures, Jenna Hansen
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Parking structures are essential to any growing commercial district, yet little thought is given to their longevity and appearance. This is particularly the case with precast parking structures. Typical issues include poor joint performance and the impact of stemmed members on interior building aesthetics. Research provided in this report proposes an alternate design that improves long term joint performance and optimizes the perspective spacing between deck members. These benefits (along with the others) are incorporated to reflect the benefits of parking structures designed using cast-in-place concrete and structural steel with concrete decking. Other benefits include: flexible column spacing, reduced / …
Safety Investigation And Guidance For Retrofitting Existing Approach Guardrail Transitions, Eric R. Jowza
Safety Investigation And Guidance For Retrofitting Existing Approach Guardrail Transitions, Eric R. Jowza
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Throughout the United States, various approach guardrail transition systems are routinely implemented by State Highway Departments to connect standard strong-post, W-beam guardrail systems to the blunt end of concrete bridge rails and roadside median barriers. When installed correctly, approach guardrail transitions shield the hazardous exposed ends of rigid parapets as well as significantly reduce the propensity for wheel snag and vehicle pocketing throughout the transition region. Unfortunately, approach guardrail transitions that are installed in the field may not always resemble that of the as-tested configuration, thus reducing the desired lateral stiffness and strength of the transition system. A recent survey …

An Evaluation Of Non-Intrusive Traffic Detectors At The Ntc/Ndor Detector Test Bed, Benjamin W. Grone
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Throughout the field of transportation engineering, decision makers require quality information. The information used in transportation operations, planning, and design is based, in part, on data from traffic detectors. The need for quality data has spurred innovations in data collection including the introduction of modern, commercially available, non-intrusive traffic detectors. As these new technologies become available, a need exists to understand their capabilities and limitations—especially limitations that are unique to a specific region.
This thesis examined the accuracy of four non-intrusive traffic detector technologies considered for potential data collection applications on Nebraska’s highways. The technologies evaluated included the Solo Pro …
Real-Time Characterization Of Ultra-Thin Organic Layers Via Simultaneous Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Piezoelectric Nanogravimetry, Keith B. Rodenhausen Jr.
Real-Time Characterization Of Ultra-Thin Organic Layers Via Simultaneous Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Piezoelectric Nanogravimetry, Keith B. Rodenhausen Jr.
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Analysis techniques are needed to determine the quantity and structure of materials composing an organic layer that is below an optical ultra-thin film limit and in a liquid environment. Neither optical nor acoustical techniques can independently distinguish between thickness and porosity of ultra-thin films due to parameter correlation. A combined optical and acoustical approach yields sufficient information to determine both thickness and porosity. The author describes application of the combinatorial approach to measure single or multiple organic layers when the total layer thickness is small compared to the wavelength of the probing light. The instrumental setup allows for simultaneous in-situ …
System Selection Based On Controlled Risk, Lina Wang
System Selection Based On Controlled Risk, Lina Wang
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The studies of using computer simulation to address stochastic systems selection problem prevail currently. Ranking and selection procedures are statistical procedures that can be used in the field of computer simulation to select the best system or the subset that includes the best system based on a performance metric of the interest with a guaranteed correct selection. The best system is defined in the majority of selection problems as a system with the largest (or smallest) mean value. However, mean is only a measure of the average behavior. Risk, which influences the stability of a system to a large extend, …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Precast prestressed concrete beams, such as rectangular and inverted tee beam, currently used in residential and commercial buildings are deep, heavy, and limited to span-to-depth ratios of 15. The research proposes a composite structural steel and prestressed concrete beam that is shallow, light, easy to produce and erect, and able to achieve a span-to-depth ratio of 24. The proposed beam is designed to be used with precast columns, hollow-core planks, and a cast-in-place topping to create a moment-resisting floor system that minimizes the need for shear walls. The goal of this system is to eliminate as many of the limitations …
Characterization Of Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties Of Asphaltic Materials In Multiple Length Scales, Soohyok Im
Characterization Of Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties Of Asphaltic Materials In Multiple Length Scales, Soohyok Im
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Asphaltic materials are classical examples of multi-phase composites in different length scales. The understanding of the mechanical behavior of asphaltic materials has been a challenge to the pavement mechanics community due to multiple complexities involved: heterogeneity, anisotropy, nonlinear inelasticity, and damage in multiple forms. The micromechanics-based models based on numerical methods have been receiving attention from the pavement mechanics community because the modeling method can account for those complexities of asphaltic materials by considering the effects of material properties and geometric characteristics of individual components on overall performance behavior of mixture or structure. As a step-wise effort, this study intends …

Vision-Based Human Action Recognition: A Sparse Representation Perspective, Zhe Zhang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The objective of vision-based human action recognition is to label the video sequence with its corresponding action category. In this thesis, the human action recognition problem is solved from a novel sparse representation perspective. First, spatial-temporal interest points are extracted in the video sequences. Then, a cuboid is extracted centered at each spatial-temporal interest point. The histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and histogram of flow (HOF) descriptors for each cuboid are computed and concatenated into a one-dimensional vector. The K-Means clustering algorithm is used to cluster these cuboid feature vectors into a few visual codewords. Finally, each action instance is …

Effects Of Approach Techniques In Place Kicking: A 3d Analysis, Chase M. Pfeifer
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Various studies aim to understand the fundamentals of kicking, primarily the instep kick commonly used by soccer players. Of those studies, most are limited to a 2D analysis using high-speed cameras for position tracking and electromyography to observe muscle activity. The few studies that investigate a 3D model are limited in their position tracking capabilities and focus mainly on joint flexion potentials and foot speed. To the authors knowledge no study of this caliber has been performed on the kinematics and dynamics of place kicking in American football. This thesis uses a 12 camera high-speed motion tracking system to investigate …

Supporting Developer-Onboarding With Enhanced Resource Finding And Visual Exploration, Jianguo Wang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Understanding the basic structure of a code base and a development team are essential to get new developers up to speed in a software development project. Developers do so through the process of early experimentation with code and the creation of mental models of technical and social structures in a project. However, getting up-to-speed in a new project can be challenging due to difficulties in: finding the right place to begin explorations, expanding the focus to determine relevant resources for tasks, and identifying dependencies across project elements to gain a high-level overview of project structures. In this thesis, I first …
