U.S. Agro-Climate In 20th Century: Growing Degree Days, First And Last Frost, Growing Season Length, And Impacts On Crop Yields, Meetpal Singh Kukal, Suat Irmak
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Significant air temperature changes have occurred globally during the 20th century, which are spatially variable to a considerable degree and these changes can have substantial implications in agroecosystem productivity. The agroclimate indicators that are responsible in these contexts are first fall frost (FFF), last spring frost (LSF), climatological growing season (CGS) length, and heat accumulation (growing degree days, GDD). We explore spatial and temporal trends associated with these indices across the continental U.S. (CONUS) during 1900–2014 using datasets collected at 1218 sites. On average, FFF has been occurring later (by 5.4 days century−1), and LSF has been occurring …

Nitrogen And Weed Management In Transplanted Tomato In The Nigerian Forest-Savanna Transition Zone, J. A. Adigun, O. S. Daramola, O. R. Adeyemi, P. M. Olorunmaiye, O. A. Osipitan
Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)
Weed infestation and inherent low soil fertility are among primary reasons for low yields of tomato in Nigeria. Field trials were carried out during the wet season of 2015 and 2016 to evaluate yield response of tomato to nitrogen (N) application and weed control methods in the forest-savanna transition zone of Abeokuta, Nigeria. Positive relationship exists between growth of weed species and increase in N application. Across the years of study, increase in N up to 90 kg/ha increased weed density by 11–25%, however, the increased N gave the transplanted tomato competitive advantage and thus enhanced weed smothering. Pre-transplant application …

Temperature And Stress Analysis During Tank Decanting And Refilling Process, Zhe Liu
Temperature And Stress Analysis During Tank Decanting And Refilling Process, Zhe Liu
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the present work, an analytical expression for the temperature distribution of the cross-section of a natural gas transport tank is derived by time-matching Green’s Function method. The tank decanting process can produce a living temperature decrease inside the tank wall while the filling process can produce a large temperature increase. This behavior can cause damage to the inner layer of the tank. The damage occurs in the form of excessive stress in the wall which is combined mechanical stress and thermal stress. Therefore, thermo-elasticity analysis is another objective of the present work. A simplified mechanical model is established in …
Assessing The Quality And Stability Of Recommender Systems, David Shriver
Assessing The Quality And Stability Of Recommender Systems, David Shriver
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Recommender systems help users to find products they may like when lacking personal experience or facing an overwhelmingly large set of items. However, assessing the quality and stability of recommender systems can present challenges for developers. First, traditional accuracy metrics, such as precision and recall, for validating the quality of recommendations, offer only a coarse, one-dimensional view of the system performance. Second, assessing the stability of a recommender systems requires generating new data and retraining a system, which is expensive. In this work, we present two new approaches for assessing the quality and stability of recommender systems to address these …

Finite Element Modeling And Updating Of A Five-Tiered Pagoda Style Temple, Linh Maytham Abdulrahman
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Historical pagoda style temples demonstrate different dynamic behavior than traditional unreinforced masonry (URM) structures due to the unique construction practices and ornate architectural detailing. Recently, the 2015 Gorkha Mw 7.8 earthquake resulted in widespread structural damage and collapse of similar historic temples in Nepal. However, one temple did not collapse. This is the five-tiered pagoda style Nyatapola temple built in 1702 and located in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Understanding the seismic vulnerability and structural behavior of these pagoda-style temples can lead to more efficient retrofit solutions and conservation practices for similar heritage structures.
This study developed and calibrated the pre- and …

Performance Evaluation Of V-Enodeb Using Virtualized Radio Resource Management, Sai Keerti Teja Boddepalli
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
With the demand upsurge for high bandwidth services, continuous increase in the number of cellular subscriptions, adoption of Internet of Things (IoT), and marked growth in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) traffic, there is great stress exerted on cellular network infrastructure. The present wireline and wireless networking technologies are rigid in nature and heavily hardware-dependent, as a result of which the process of infrastructure upgrade to keep up with future demand is cumbersome and expensive.
Software-defined networks (SDN) hold the promise to decrease network rigidity by providing central control and flow abstraction, which in current network setups are hardware-based. The embrace of SDN …

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
In an effort to improve mechanical properties of asphalt concrete, an exploratory research using mixture additives was attempted. Two different types of additives on two material scales were used: asphalt concrete (AC) level and binder level. At the start of this study, the effect of natural cornhusk fibers on the resistance of two types of AC mixtures on cracking were tested for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and cold-mix asphalt (CMA). The results showed slight improvements in cracking resistance in cornhusk reinforced HMA, and in the case of the CMA, marshal flow. Overall, based on the test results, cornhusk-reinforced HMA and CMA …
Consensus Ensemble Approaches Improve De Novo Transcriptome Assemblies, Adam Voshall
Consensus Ensemble Approaches Improve De Novo Transcriptome Assemblies, Adam Voshall
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Accurate and comprehensive transcriptome assemblies lay the foundation for a range of analyses, such as differential gene expression analysis, metabolic pathway reconstruction, novel gene discovery, or metabolic flux analysis. With the arrival of next-generation sequencing technologies it has become possible to acquire the whole transcriptome data rapidly even from non-model organisms. However, the problem of accurately assembling the transcriptome for any given sample remains extremely challenging, especially in species with a high prevalence of recent gene or genome duplications, those with alternative splicing of transcripts, or those whose genomes are not well studied. This thesis provides a detailed overview of …
Application Of Cosine Similarity In Bioinformatics, Srikanth Maturu
Application Of Cosine Similarity In Bioinformatics, Srikanth Maturu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Finding similar sequences to an input query sequence (DNA or proteins) from a sequence data set is an important problem in bioinformatics. It provides researchers an intuition of what could be related or how the search space can be reduced for further tasks. An exact brute-force nearest-neighbor algorithm used for this task has complexity O(m * n) where n is the database size and m is the query size. Such an algorithm faces time-complexity issues as the database and query sizes increase. Furthermore, the use of alignment-based similarity measures such as minimum edit distance adds an additional complexity to the …

Critical-Point Model Dielectric Function Analysis Of Wo3 Thin Films Deposited By Atomic Layer Deposition Techniques, Ufuk Kılıç, Derek Sekora, Alyssa Mock, Rafał Korlacki, Elena M. Echeverría, Natale J. Ianno, Eva Schubert, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
WO3 thin films were grown by atomic layer deposition and spectroscopic ellipsometry data gathered in the photon energy range of 0.72-8.5 eV and from multiple samples was utilized to determine the frequency dependent complex-valued isotropic dielectric function for WO3. We employ a critical-point model dielectric function analysis and determine a parameterized set of oscillators and compare the observed critical-point contributions with the vertical transition energy distribution found within the band structure of WO3 calculated by density functional theory. We investigate surface roughness with atomic force microscopy and compare to ellipsometric determined effective roughness layer thickness.

Concomitant Crystallization In Propylene/Ethylene Random Copolymer With Strong Flow At Elevated Temperatures, Lirong Zheng, Lucia Fernandez-Ballester, Gerrit W. M. Peters, Zhe Ma
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Flow-induced crystallization of α- and γ-phases was studied for a propylene/ethylene random copolymer with 3.4 mol % ethylene at two high temperatures of 132 and 142 °C by combining a pressure-driven slit flow device with real-time synchrotron wide-angle X-ray diffraction. At 132 °C, it was found that both α- and γ-phases were generated at shear stresses ranging from 0.091 to 0.110 MPa and that the γ-phase always appeared later than the α-phase. However, for 142 °C and the same stresses, only the α-phase formed. Only upon cooling the partially crystallized copolymer did the γ-phase emerge. The lack of γ-crystals obtained …
Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg
Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The use of resource constrained inexpensive hardware places restrictions on the design of streaming video and image processing system performance. In order to achieve acceptable frame-per-second (fps) performance with low latency, it is important to understand the response time requirements that the system needs to meet. For humans to be able to process and react to an image there should not be more than a 100ms delay between the time a camera captures an image and subsequently displays that image to the user.
In order to accomplish this goal, several design considerations need to be taken into account that limit …

In order to address the lack of knowledge about the engineering profession in middle-level students, the project described in this Honors Thesis was developed. Through the creation of an afterschool program centered on engineering, students were able to apply the math and science concepts covered to design, build, and test a bridge. One particular lesson from this after-school program was highlighted in this thesis, the lesson covering the Pythagorean Theorem, to demonstrate the use of SOAR methodology in the lesson’s development and later use in the classroom. The effectiveness of the Pythagorean Theorem lesson was evaluated positively based on the …
Road Diet Feasibility Analysis For Nebraska, Brandon L. Purintun
Road Diet Feasibility Analysis For Nebraska, Brandon L. Purintun
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Many rural towns and cities throughout Nebraska have experienced consistent population decline over the past 50 years, and the highway system once built to accommodate hoped-for growth is not serving the population as well as it could. These towns and cities would benefit from implementing a road diet conversion on their main highways. Within rural communities, road diets are an increasingly popular method of improving safety along major arterials through the reduction of excess capacity in favor of increasing refuge areas for turning vehicles. A typical application might be the restriping of a four-lane undivided highway into a three-lane highway …
Examination Of Steel Pin And Hanger Assembly Performance: Retrofit To Replacement, Chandana Chickamagalur Balakrishna
Examination Of Steel Pin And Hanger Assembly Performance: Retrofit To Replacement, Chandana Chickamagalur Balakrishna
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A number of steel, multi-beam bridges exist in the United States that contain pin and hanger assemblies. Pin and hanger assemblies are fracture critical members whose failure would result in collapse of the bridge or render it unable to perform its expected functions. As these bridges continue to age, many assemblies have deteriorated to a point where retrofit or replacement has to be considered and performed to maintain intended safety and performance. States have taken various approaches to address the pin and hanger assembly retrofit and replacement options. However, there is no single document that summarizes these approaches.
This research …

Optimized Health Monitoring Plans For A Steel, Double-Track Railway Bridge, Ahmed Rageh
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Railway bridges are an essential component of any modern society and play a significant transportation role. During the 19th and early 20th centuries steel truss and plate girder bridges were commonly used railway designs, with most of the trusses constructed using pin and eyebar systems and most other load carrying members being riveted, built-up sections.
Many of these bridges are still in use and are subjected to increased railway traffic intensity, loads and speeds. The current practice for evaluating the integrity of bridges in the United States, irrespective of use, is primarily via visual inspection, with those inspections …
Peridynamic Modeling Of Dynamic Fracture In Bio-Inspired Structures For High Velocity Impacts, Sneha Akula
Peridynamic Modeling Of Dynamic Fracture In Bio-Inspired Structures For High Velocity Impacts, Sneha Akula
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Bio-inspired damage resistant models have distinct patterns like brick-mortar, Voronoi, helicoidal etc., which show exceptional damage mitigation against high-velocity impacts. These unique patterns increase damage resistance (in some cases up to 3000 times more than the constituent materials) by effectively dispersing the stress waves produced by the impact. Ability to mimic these structures on a larger scale can be ground-breaking and could be used in numerous applications. Advancements in 3D printing have now made possible fabrication of these patterns with ease and at a low cost. Research on dynamic fracture in bio-inspired structures is very limited but it is …

Modeling Residual Stress Development In Hybrid Processing By Additive Manufacturing And Laser Shock Peening, Guru Charan Reddy Madireddy
Modeling Residual Stress Development In Hybrid Processing By Additive Manufacturing And Laser Shock Peening, Guru Charan Reddy Madireddy
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The term “hybrid” has been widely applied to many areas of manufacturing. Naturally, that term has found a home in additive manufacturing as well. Hybrid additive manufacturing or hybrid-AM has been used to describe multi-material printing, combined machines (e.g., deposition printing and milling machine center), and combined processes (e.g., printing and interlayer laser re-melting). The capabilities afforded by hybrid-AM are rewriting the design rules for materials and adding a new dimension in the design for additive manufacturing paradigm. This work focuses on hybrid-AM processes, which are defined as the use of additive manufacturing (AM) with one …

Wetland Conservation Effects Result In Enhanced Playa Functionality In The Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, Hong Zhang
Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
This study assessed the functionality level of wetland hydrology, hydrophyte and soil conditions, and then identified the restorable potential of conserved playas. The distribution of hydrology and hydrophyte were geospatially examined through annual tracking the quantity and quality of wetlands on historical hydric soil footprints under different conservation programs in the Rainwater Basin (RWB) in Nebraska, USA during 2004-2015. The results show that the historical hydric soil footprints with the conservation programs had significantly higher functionality of ponded water and hydrophyte than non-conserved wetlands. The yearly average of ponded water areas within footprints varies at 12.59% for the Waterfowl Production …
Effect Of Shot Peening On Stress Corrosion Behavior Of Biodegradable Magnesium We43, Tejaswita Patil
Effect Of Shot Peening On Stress Corrosion Behavior Of Biodegradable Magnesium We43, Tejaswita Patil
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Conventionally used metals for orthopedic devices made of titanium, stainless steel, and Co-Cr alloys are designed to be permanently implanted. However, long-term complications arise and a secondary implant removal surgery is often necessary. A mismatch in stiffness between the bone and implant results in stress shielding that negatively affects bone density. To overcome these problems, magnesium alloys (e.g., WE34) are favored due to a lower Young’s modulus (45 GPa) and biodegradability. The critical technical barrier with magnesium alloys is their high corrosion rate in physiological (salt-based) environments. One solution is to use surface treatments, such as shot peening (SP), to …
Cost-Effective Techniques For Continuous Integration Testing, Jingjing Liang
Cost-Effective Techniques For Continuous Integration Testing, Jingjing Liang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Continuous integration (CI) development environments allow software engineers to frequently integrate and test their code. While CI environments provide advantages, they also utilize non-trivial amounts of time and resources. To address this issue, researchers have adapted techniques for test case prioritization (TCP) and regression test selection (RTS) to CI environments.
To date, current TCP techniques under CI environments have operated on test suites, and have not achieved substantial improvements. In this thesis, we use a lightweight approach based on test suite failure and execution history, and “continuously” prioritizes commits that are waiting for execution in response to the arrival of …

Mechanical Characterization Of Polysilicon Mems: A Hybrid Tmcmc/Pod-Kriging Approach, Ramin Mirzazadeh, Saeed Eftekhar Azam, Stefano Mariani
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Microscale uncertainties related to the geometry and morphology of polycrystalline silicon films, constituting the movable structures of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), were investigated through a joint numerical/experimental approach. An on-chip testing device was designed and fabricated to deform a compliant polysilicon beam. In previous studies, we showed that the scattering in the input–output characteristics of the device can be properly described only if statistical features related to the morphology of the columnar polysilicon film and to the etching process adopted to release the movable structure are taken into account. In this work, a high fidelity finite element model of the …
A Review Of The Seismic Isolation Design Procedure, Francisco Garcia
A Review Of The Seismic Isolation Design Procedure, Francisco Garcia
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The current design procedure for seismic isolation bearings for bridges is a simplified method that assigns the bearings with an elastic stiffness. Bridges subjected to ground motions actually act in a hysteric, nonlinear fashion when force is plotted against displacement. The goal of this research was to gain further insight as to whether simplifying seismic isolation bearings to a simplified stiffness is adequate or not. Design procedures were followed in the modeling of a bridge with seismic isolation. Linear modal time history analyses and with nonlinear direct integration time history analyses of ground motions were compared. At the conclusion of …
