Tunable Plasmonic Resonances In Highly Porous Nano-Bamboo Si-Au Superlattice-Type Thin Films, Ufuk Kılıç, Alyssa Mock, René Feder, Derek Sekora, Matthew J. Hilfiker, Rafal Korlacki, Eva Schubert, Christos Argyropoulos, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
We report on fabrication of spatially-coherent columnar plasmonic nanostructure superlattice-type thin films with high porosity and strong optical anisotropy using glancing angle deposition. Subsequent and repeated depositions of silicon and gold lead to nanometer-dimension subcolumns with controlled lengths. The superlattice-type columns resemble bamboo structures where smaller column sections of gold form junctions sandwiched between larger silicon column sections (“nano-bamboo”). We perform generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements and finite element method computations to elucidate the strongly anisotropic optical properties of the highly-porous nano-bamboo structures. The occurrence of a strongly localized plasmonic mode with displacement pattern reminiscent of a dark quadrupole mode is …

Evaluation Of Effectiveness Of Streambank Stabilization Practices And Flood Impact On Cedar River, Nebraska, Naisargi N. Dave
Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research
Stream restoration has been a major environmental objective for preserving biodiversity, reducing loss of valuable cropland and improving water quality. The impact and efficiency of streambank stabilization practices has been simulated using erosion-prediction models; however, evaluation of the erosion-control practices to measure their efficiency is often neglected. This project monitored changes in fluvial geomorphology on the Cedar River in Nebraska and quantified the effectiveness of 18 sites with streambank stabilization practices. A flood event in 2010 due to dam failure acted as a major parameter in measuring the efficiency of the erosion control practices. The methodology included aerial imagery to …

Artificial Neural Network And Finite Element Modeling Of Nanoindentation Tests On Silica, Kianoosh Koocheki
Artificial Neural Network And Finite Element Modeling Of Nanoindentation Tests On Silica, Kianoosh Koocheki
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Two major forms of Silica include the crystalline form named Quartz which consist of the sand grains in nature, and amorphous form named Silica Glass or Fused Silica which is commonly known as glass. Fused Silica is an amorphous crystal that can show plastic behavior at micro-scale despite its brittle behavior in large scales. Due to the amorphous and ductile nature of Fused Silica, this behavior may not be explained well using the traditional dislocation-based mechanism of plasticity for crystalline solids. The crystal plasticity happens due to shear stress and stored energy in the material as dislocations which does not …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Vascularization is a fundamental prerequisite for large bone construct development and remains one of the main challenges of bone tissue engineering. Our current study presents the combination of 3D printing technique with a hydrogel-based prevascularization strategy to generate prevascularized bone constructs. Human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSC) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were encapsulated within our bioactive hydrogels, and the effects of culture conditions on in vitro vascularization were determined. We further generated composite constructs by forming 3D printed polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite scaffolds coated with cell-laden hydrogels and determined how the co-culture affected vascularization and osteogenesis. It was demonstrated …

Using Synthetic Lethality To Sensitize Pediatric Brain Cancer Cells To The Dna Damaging Effects Of Radiation Therapy, Megan Ruckman, Rose Nelson, Forrest Kievit
UCARE: Research Products
Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer related deaths in children. As a treatment, radiotherapy is very effective, but it also comes with many severe side effects, such as radiation-induced adverse developmental and psychosocial effects.2 Cancer, because it is a mutagenic disease, is by definition a disease of DNA repair pathways. Here we utilize drugs to inhibit various DNA repair pathways with the purpose of sensitizing cancer cells to radiotherapy so that lower doses may be used. Hopefully this would improve the lifelong outcomes of patients that would otherwise not survive or would be left with lifelong neurocognitive …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
In the sub-humid region of Northeast China, increasing use of center-pivot irrigation systems has caused increased interest in sprinkler fertigation technology in maize production to improve nitrogen (N) use efficiency and protect the environment. However, the lack of fertigation strategies for maize cultivation restrains the adoption of sprinkler fertigation technology. A field experiment was carried out in a sub-humid region of Northeast China on maize to determine the effect of different fertigation management strategies on plant growth, grain yield and nitrate content in the soil during the maize growing season. Three N rates (200, 160, and 120 kg N ha …

Chronic wounds are a major health concern and they affect the lives of more than 25 million people in the United States. They are susceptible to infection and are the leading cause of nontraumatic limb amputations worldwide. The wound environment is dynamic, but their healing rate can be enhanced by administration of therapies at the right time. This approach requires real-time monitoring of the wound environment with on-demand drug delivery in a closed-loop manner. In this paper, a smart and automated flexible wound dressing with temperature and pH sensors integrated onto flexible bandages that monitor wound status in real-time to …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Backscatter communication system is a wireless communication system that is used by both academic community and industry circles in recent years. This communication system only requires ultra-low power usage and simple design of the sensors. This project is using backscatter communication system to transmit data with backscatter tags. The method we used is semi-passive backscatter communication. This project focuses on transmitting signals with multiple sensors so there is a problem about distinguishing the signal reflected by different nodes. We modulated the transmitting digital signal with Walsh function to solve the problem of separating the signals between different nodes. By using …

An Evaluation Of Unmanned Aerial System Multispectral And Thermal Infrared Data As Information For Agricultural Crop And Irrigation Management, Mitch Maguire
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Spatial irrigation management has been steadily advancing over the last several years. A current issue with managing irrigation spatially on sub-field scale is the inability to readily collect the spatial field data necessary to properly manage irrigation. Multispectral and thermal infrared imagery used in informing irrigation management decisions was previously collected by satellite and manned aircraft remote sensing platforms. These remote sensing platforms pose issues concerning economic feasibility, revisit intervals, and weather factors that inhibit the collection of data. Recent developments in unmanned aerial systems, which provide an additional means of collecting multispectral and thermal infrared data, have the potential …

Preparation And Characterization Of Functionalized Heparin-Loaded Poly-Ɛ-Caprolactone Fibrous Mats To Prevent Infection With Human Papillomaviruses, Daniela Gonzalez, Jorge Ragusa, Peter C. Angeletti, Gustavo F. Larsen
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this study, heparin-loaded poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) fibrous mats were prepared and characterized based on their physical, cytotoxic, thermal, and biological properties. The main objective of the work described here was to test the hypothesis that incorporation of heparin into a PCL carrier could serve as bio-compatible material capable of inhibiting Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The idea of firmly anchoring heparin to capture soluble virus, vs. a slow heparin release to inhibit a virus in solution was tested. Thus, one material was produced via conventional heparin matrix encapsulation and electrohydrodynamic fiber processing in one step. A second type of material was …

Evaluating Opportunities And Barriers To Improving The Energy Efficiency Of Small Nebraska Wastewater Treatment Plants, Matthew J. Thompson
Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP)s account for about 0.8% of U.S. electricity use. Small WWTPs serving communities of populations less than 10,000 accounts for 95% of treatment plants in Nebraska. These plants are significantly less efficient compared to large systems and thus improving their energy efficiency (E2) is a growing focus in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with their operation. Energy use of plant unit operations was evaluated for several plants and included analysis of energy for space heating. Specific infrastructure and/or operational changes reported by operators following an E2 benchmarking project were evaluated by quantifying the change in …

Interface Structure And Deformation Mechanisms Of Mg/Nb Multilayers, Xinyan Xie
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys, as the lightest structural materials, are very attractive for a range of weight sensitive applications, such as aircraft engine, transportation industry and so on. However, their further applications are limited due to the weak properties, such as the low strength and poor ductility. In recent years, advanced techniques aiming at the modification of the microstructures, have been developed to promote the properties of Mg and its alloys, such as modifying the texture, refining the grain size, forming the intermetallic phase, and introducing the interfaces or stacking faults into the systems. Constructing Mg/Nb multilayers, which introduces …

Data Mining Ancient Script Image Data Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Shruti Daggumati, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
The recent surge in ancient scripts has resulted in huge image libraries of ancient texts. Data mining of the collected images enables the study of the evolution of these ancient scripts. In particular, the origin of the Indus Valley script is highly debated. We use convolutional neural networks to test which Phoenician alphabet letters and Brahmi symbols are closest to the Indus Valley script symbols. Surprisingly, our analysis shows that overall the Phoenician alphabet is much closer than the Brahmi script to the Indus Valley script symbols.

With the global population approaching 9 billion people by the year 2050, the world’s food, energy, and water (FEW) resources must be used more intelligently to provide for everyone. While we understand how individual FEW systems behave using modeling, we cannot understand the full environmental and production impacts of decisions in each system without understanding how they are all linked together. An approach to coupling these systems is starting with identifying a few highly interconnected FEW systems. The corn, ethanol, and beef systems are large economic and agricultural drivers in the Midwest United States and are highly linked. Many individual …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Manufacturing ultralight and mechanical reliable materials has been a long-time challenge. Ceramicbased mechanical metamaterials provide significant opportunities to reverse their brittle nature and unstable mechanical properties and have great potential as strong, ultralight, and ultrastiff materials. However, the failure of ceramics nanolattice and degradation of strength/modulus with decreasing density are caused by buckling of the struts and failure of the nodes within the nanolattices, especially during cyclic loading. Here, we explore a new class of 3D ceramic-based metamaterials with a high strength–density ratio, stiffness, recoverability, cyclability, and optimal scaling factor. Deformation mode of the fabricated nanolattices has been engineered through …

Reliable estimates of seismic hazard are essential for the development of resilient communities; however, estimates of rare, yet high intensity earthquakes are highly uncertain due to a lack of observations and recordings. Lacking this data, seismic hazard analyses may be based on extrapolations from earthquakes with more moderate return periods, which can lead to physically unrealistic earthquake scenarios. However, the existence of certain precariously balanced rocks (PBRs) has been identified as an indicator of an upper bound ground motion, which precludes toppling of the balanced rock, over its lifetime. To this end, a survey of PBRs was conducted in proximity …

Decco: Deep-Learning Enabled Coverage And Capacity Optimization For Massive Mimo Systems, Yang Yang, Yang Li, Kai Li, Shuang Zhao, Rui Chen, Jun Wang, Song Ci
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
System capacity and service coverage are the most critical performance metrics in cellular wireless communication networks. Usually, system capacity enhancements are at the expense of service coverage degradations, and vice versa. This capacity-coverage tradeoff and the associated joint optimization problem becomes very challenging in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems, due to a large amount of antenna tilt values to be configured and very sophisticated inter-cell interference conditions, under massive antenna scenarios. This paper proposes a novel approach, namely group alignment of user signal strength (GAUSS), to efficiently support the user scheduling for the massive MIMO system, and thus serve …

Thermal Comparison Of Polycrystalline Diamond And Aln In Power Semiconductor Device Packages, Brandon M. Guenther
Thermal Comparison Of Polycrystalline Diamond And Aln In Power Semiconductor Device Packages, Brandon M. Guenther
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The desire for improved thermal management in power semiconductor device packaging is becoming increasingly important due to the progression towards implementing wide-bandgap semiconductor (WBG) materials, such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). These semiconductor materials have the capability of operating at much higher voltages, temperatures, and frequencies compared to standard silicon-based devices. However, utilizing this enhanced operating region will induce larger thermomechanical stress within the package structure as a consequence of operating at higher junction temperatures around 250-300 °C. To handle the higher and improved operating characteristics from the WBG semiconductors, the current package technology is modified by …
