Nanothermomechanical And And Or Logic Gates, Ahmed Hamed, Sidy Ndao

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Today’s electronics cannot perform in harsh environments (e.g., elevated temperatures and ionizing radiation environments) found in many engineering applications. Based on the coupling between near-field thermal radiation and MEMS thermal actuation, we presented the design and modeling of NanoThermoMechanical AND, OR, and NOT logic gates as an alternative, and showed their ability to be combined into a full thermal adder to perform complex operations. in this work, we introduce the fabrication and characterization of the first ever documented Thermal AND and OR logic gates. Theresults show thermal logic operations can be achieved successfully through demonstrated and easy-to- manufacture nanothermoMechanical logic …

Electrospun Thymosin Beta-4 Loaded Plga/Pla Nanofiber/ Microfiber Hybrid Yarns For Tendon Tissue Engineering Application, Shaohua Wu, Rong Zhou, Fang Zhou, Philipp N. Streubel, Shaojuan Chen, Bin Duan

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Microfiber yarns (MY) have been widely employed to construct tendon tissue grafts. However, suboptimal ultrastructure and inappropriate environments for cell interactions limit their clinical application. Herein, we designed a modified electrospinning device to coat poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) PLGA nanofibers onto polylactic acid (PLA) MY to generate PLGA/PLA hybrid yarns (HY), which had a well-aligned nanofibrous structure, resembling the ultrastructure of native tendon tissues and showed enhanced failure load compared to PLA MY. PLGA/PLA HY significantly improved the growth, proliferation, and tendon-specific gene expressions of human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (HADMSC) compared to PLA MY. Moreover, thymosin beta-4 (Tβ4) loaded PLGA/PLA …

Additive Manufacturing Of Magnesium Alloys, Rakeshkumar Karunakaran, Sam Ortgies, Ali Tamayol, Florin Bobaru, Michael P. Sealy

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Magnesium alloys are a promising new class of degradable biomaterials that have a similar stiffness to bone, which minimizes the harmful effects of stress shielding. Use of biodegradable magnesium implants eliminates the need for a second surgery for repair or removal. There is a growing interest to capitalize on additive manufacturing's unique design capabilities to advance the frontiers of medicine. However, magnesium alloys are difficult to 3D print due to the high chemical reactivity that poses a combustion risk. Furthermore, the low vaporization temperature of magnesium and common biocompatible alloying elements further increases the difficulty to print fully dense structures …

3d Printing Of Multilayered Scaffolds For Rotator Cuff Tendon Regeneration, Xiping Jiang, Shaohua Wu, Mitchell Kuss, Yunfan Kong, Wen Shi, Philipp N. Streubel, Tieshi Li, Bin Duan

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Repairing massive rotator cuff tendon defects remains a challenge due to the high retear rate after surgical intervention. 3D printing has emerged as a promising technique that enables the fabrication of engineered tissues with heterogeneous structures and mechanical properties, as well as controllable microenvironments for tendon regeneration. In this study, we developed a new strategy for rotator cuff tendon repair by combining a 3D printed scaffold of polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) with cell-laden collagen-fibrin hydrogels. We designed and fabricated two types of scaffolds: one featuring a separate layer-by-layer structure and another with a tri-layered structure as a whole. Uniaxial tensile tests …

Imparities Of Shear Avalanches Dynamic Evolution In A Metallic Glass, Yin Du, Qing Zhou, Qian Jia, Yidi Shi, Haifeng Wang, Jian Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The imparities of shear avalanches dynamic evolution under nanoindentation originating from the soft regions and the stiff matrix were explored in a metallic glass by statistical and dynamic analysis. Upon the continuous indentation process, the dynamic state of the stiff matrix exhibits a transition from a chaotic behavior to a self-organized critical (SOC) behavior, whereas the soft regions are domi-nated by the SOC behavior throughout the indentation process. The mechanism was clarified by the evolution of the cut-off size of shear avalanches. These findings might advance our fundamental understanding of inhomogeneous deformation on microscale.

IMPACT STATEMENT The shear avalanches dynamic …

Foundry Sand Source Reduction Options: Life Cycle Assessment Evaluation, Samuel Ghormley, Robert Williams, Bruce Dvorak

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Foundries represent a significant part of the world’s economy and are a large consumer of energy and producer of solid waste. Sand-handling processes can use 5–10% of a foundry’s total energy. The goal of this research was to explore source reduction and waste minimization at a foundry, using both economic and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques to compare three secondary sand-reclamation options. LCA software modeled all sand processes at a mid-sized ferrous foundry in the USA. The LCA showed all secondary reclamation technologies, while more energy intensive at the foundry, lowered life cycle environmental impacts, including GHG emissions, ecotoxicity, and …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Techniques that enable the spatial arrangement of living cells into defined patterns are broadly applicable to tissue engineering, drug screening, and cell–cell investigations. Achieving large-scale patterning with single-cell resolution while minimizing cell stress/damage is, however, technically challenging using existing methods. Here, a facile and highly scalable technique for the rational design of reconfigurable arrays of cells is reported. Specifically, microdroplets of cell suspensions are assembled using stretchable surface-chemical patterns which, following incubation, yield ordered arrays of cells. The microdroplets are generated using a microfluidic- based aerosol spray nozzle that enables control of the volume/size of the droplets delivered to the …

Characteristic Boundaries Associated With Three-Dimensional Twins In Hexagonal Metals, Shujuan Wang, Mingyu Gong, Rodney J. Mccabe, Laurent Capolungo, Jian Wang, Carlos N. Tomé Jan 2020

Characteristic Boundaries Associated With Three-Dimensional Twins In Hexagonal Metals, Shujuan Wang, Mingyu Gong, Rodney J. Mccabe, Laurent Capolungo, Jian Wang, Carlos N. Tomé

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Twinning is a critically important deformation mode in hexagonal close-packed metals. Twins are three-dimensional (3D) domains, whose growth is mediated by the motion of facets bounding the 3D twin domains and influences work hardening in metals. An understanding of twin transformations therefore necessitates that the atomic-scale structure and intrinsic mobilities of facets be known and characterized. The present work addresses the former point by systematically characterizing the boundary structures of 3D { ̄1012} twins in magnesium using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Eight characteristic facets associated with twin boundaries are reported, five of which have never been experimentally observed before. …

Rotating-Liquid-Based Hydrogel Bead Generator, Haipeng Zhang, Sangjin Ryu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Hydrogel beads are widely used in various applications, but producing such beads often requires complicated devices. Instead, we propose an easy-to-adopt, cost effective, open source hydrogel bead generator. This generator consists of two modules. The first module rotates two immiscible liquids in rigid body motion: mineral oil as the continuous phase (CP) liquid on top, and a hydrogel cross-linking (CL) liquid at bottom. The second module injects a hydrogel pre-polymer solution as the dispersed phase (DP) liquid into the rotating CP liquid. As the DP liquid flows out of a syringe needle, its drops are pinched off by the shear …

Nanoliposomes are widely used as delivery vehicles for active compounds. Nanoliposomes from rapeseed phospholipids were incorporated into interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels of gelatin methacryloyl and alginate. The multiscale physicochemical properties of the hydrogels are studied both on the surface and through the thickness of the 3D network. The obtained composite hydrogels exhibited strong mechanical properties and a highly porous surface. The blend ratio, as well as the concentration of nanoliposomes, affects the properties of the hydrogels. Nanofunctionalized hydrogels induced keratinocyte growth. These advantageous characteristics may open up many applications of the developed hydrogels in drug delivery and tissue engineering

Narrow Band Perovskite Single Crystal Photodetectors With Tunable Spectral Response, Jinsong Huang, Yanjun Fang Jan 2020

Narrow Band Perovskite Single Crystal Photodetectors With Tunable Spectral Response, Jinsong Huang, Yanjun Fang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Photoelectronic devices using perovskite single-crystal materials having a narrow spectral response, e.g., with a full-width-at-half-maximum response of less than about 20 nm, are provided. The response spectra are continuously (in frequency band) settable or tunable, e.g., from blue to red, by changing the halide composition and thus the band gap of the single crystals. The narrow-band response can be explained by the strong surface charge recombination of the excess carriers lose to the crystal surfaces generated by short wavelength light. The excess carriers generated by below-band gap excitation locate away from the surfaces and can be much more efficiently collect …

Low Velocity Impact Of Hybrid Stacked Steel Plates, H. Hadidi, R. Q. Feng, M. P. Sealy

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Designing and manufacturing high-strength, low-weight parts with enhanced impact resistance is highly sought after in the transportation industry. The most common methods to improve strength-to-weight ratios of impact targets is a composite material composition or a favorable geometric design. An alternative method to improve impact performance is functionally gradient mechanical properties in a single material by hybrid additive stacking. In this study, low-velocity impact tests were conducted on hybrid stacked 1070 steel plates where individual layers were subjected to shot peening (SP) to functionally grade mechanical properties. Hybrid additive stacking refers to secondarily processing preferential layers within a stacked build …

Challenges In Path Planning Of High Energy Density Beams For Additive Manufacturing, Karunakaran K. P, Seema Negi, Arun Nambolan, Yogesh Patil, Milan Pandya, Sajan Kapil, Dmitriy Trushnikov, Michael P. Sealy, Alain Bernard

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

As there are no cutting forces in High Energy Density (HED) beams like lasers and Electron Beam (EB), their speeds are limited only by their positioning systems. On the other hand, as the entire matrix of the 3D printed part has to be addressed by the thin beam in multiple passes in multiple layers, they have to travel several kilometers in tiny motions. Therefore, the acceleration of the motion system becomes the limiting factor than velocity or precision. The authors have proposed an area-filling strategy for EB to fill the layer with optimal squares to exploit analog and hardware computing. …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Interreplicate variability—the spread in output values among units of the same sensor subjected to essentially the same condition—can be a major source of uncertainty in sensor data. To investigate the interreplicate variability among eight electromagnetic soil moisture sensors through a field study, eight units of TDR315, CS616, CS655, HydraProbe2, EC5, 5TE, and Teros12 were installed at a depth of 0.30 m within 3 m of each other, whereas three units of AquaSpy Vector Probe were installed within 3 m of each other. The magnitude of interreplicate variability in volumetric water content (θv) was generally similar between a static …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Soil moisture sensors can be effective and promising decision-making tools for diverse applications and audiences, including agricultural managers, irrigation practitioners, and researchers. Nevertheless, there exists immense adoption potential in the United States, with only 1.2 in 10 farms nationally using soil moisture sensors to decide when to irrigate. This number is much lower in the global scale. Increased adoption is likely hindered by lack of scientific support in need assessment, selection, suitability and use of these sensors. Here, through extensive field research, we address the operational feasibility of soil moisture sensors, an aspect which has been overlooked in the past, …

Effects Of Farrowing Stall Layout And Number Of Heat Lamps On Sow And Piglet Production Performance, Suzanne M. Leonard, Hongwei Xin, Tami M. Brown-Bandl, Brett C. Ramirez, Somak Dutta, Gary A. Rohrer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Most farrowing facilities in the United States use stalls and heat lamps to improve sow and piglet productivity. This study investigated these factors by comparing production outcomes for three different farrowing stall layouts (traditional, expanded creep area, expanded sow area) and use of one or two heat lamps. Data were collected on 427 sows and their litters over one year. Results showed no statistical differences due to experimental treatment for any of the production metrics recorded, excluding percent stillborn. Parity one sows had fewer piglets born alive (p < 0.001), lower percent mortality (p = 0.001) and over-lay (p = 0.003), and a …

Influence Of Watershed Characteristics On Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Across Multiple Stream Orders, Olufemi P. Abimbola, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Troy E. Gilmore, Jesse T. Korus Jan 2020

Influence Of Watershed Characteristics On Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Across Multiple Stream Orders, Olufemi P. Abimbola, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Troy E. Gilmore, Jesse T. Korus

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Streambeds are critical hydrological interfaces: their physical properties regulate the rate, timing, and location of fluxes between aquifers and streams. Streambed vertical hydraulic conductivity (Kv) is a key parameter in watershed models, so understanding its spatial variability and uncertainty is essential to accurately predicting how stresses and environmental signals propagate through the hydrologic system. Most distributed modeling studies use generalized Kv estimates from column experiments or grain-size distribution, but Kv may include a wide range of orders of magnitude for a given particle size group. Thus, precisely predicting Kv spatially has remained conceptual, experimental, …

High-Throughput Screening Of Clinically Approved Drugs That Prime Nonviral Gene Delivery To Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Tyler Kozisek, Andrew Hamann, Albert Nguyen, Michael Miller, Sarah Plautz, Angela K. Pannier

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Background: Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are intensely researched for applications in cell therapeutics due to their unique properties, however, intrinsic therapeutic properties of hMSCs could be enhanced by genetic modification. Viral transduction is efficient, but suffers from safety issues. Conversely, nonviral gene delivery, while safer compared to viral, suffers from inefficiency and cytotoxicity, especially in hMSCs. To address the shortcomings of nonviral gene delivery to hMSCs, our lab has previously demonstrated that pharmacological ‘priming’ of hMSCs with the glucocorticoid dexamethasone can significantly increase transfection in hMSCs by modulating transfection-induced cytotoxicity. This work seeks to establish a library of transfection …

Deep Learning Predicts Microbial Interactions From Self-Organized Spatiotemporal Patterns, Joon-Yong Lee, Natalie C. Sadler, Robert G. Egbert, Christopher R. Anderton, Kirsten S. Hofmockel, Janet K. Jansson, Hyun-Seob Song

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Microbial communities organize into spatial patterns that are largely governed by interspecies interactions. This phenomenon is an important metric for understanding community functional dynamics, yet the use of spatial patterns for predicting microbial interactions is currently lacking. Here we propose supervised deep learning as a new tool for network inference. An agent-based model was used to simulate the spatiotemporal evolution of two interacting organisms under diverse growth and interaction scenarios, the data of which was subsequently used to train deep neural networks. For small-size domains (100 mm x 100 mm) over which interaction coefficients are assumed to be invariant, we …
