A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr.
A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr.
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The need for long-distance High Frequency (HF) communications in the 3-30 MHz frequency range seemed to diminish at the end of the 20th century with the advent of space-based communications and the spread of fiber optic-connected digital networks. Renewed interest in HF has emerged as an enabler for operations in austere locations and for its ability to serve as a redundant link when space-based and terrestrial communication channels fail. Communications system designers can create a “digital twin” system to explore the operational advantages and constraints of the new capability. Existing wireless channel models can adequately simulate communication channel conditions with …
Formal Language Constraints In Deep Reinforcement Learning For Self-Driving Vehicles, Tyler Bienhoff
Formal Language Constraints In Deep Reinforcement Learning For Self-Driving Vehicles, Tyler Bienhoff
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In recent years, self-driving vehicles have become a holy grail technology that, once fully developed, could radically change the daily behaviors of people and enhance safety. The complexities of controlling a car in a constantly changing environment are too immense to directly program how the vehicle should behave in each specific scenario. Thus, a common technique when developing autonomous vehicles is to use reinforcement learning, where vehicles can be trained in simulated and real-world environments to make proper decisions in a wide variety of scenarios. Reinforcement learning models, however, have uncertainties in how the vehicle acts, especially in a previously …
On-Farm Research And Student Engagement To Assess And Promote The Use Of Organic Amendments To Improve Agricultural Soil Health And Resilience Of Crop Production Systems In Nebraska, Agustin Jose Olivo
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In nearly every production environment, there are opportunities to capture profits if waste streams can be further processed or enhanced to create “value added” products. On-farm research studies were initiated in 2019 at four locations across Nebraska to assess the impacts of livestock manure, cedar mulch from forestry management and coal char from sugar beet processing, on agricultural cropland. Study treatments included beef cattle manure (CM), beef cattle slurry (CS), coal char (CC), woody biomass (WB) CM+WB, CS+WB, CM+CC and control (CON; no organic amendment). Soil properties and corn yield were evaluated after a single growing season. Results indicate that …
Magnetic Water Treamtment For Scale Prevention On Water Heater Elements, Fatma Al-Sharji
Magnetic Water Treamtment For Scale Prevention On Water Heater Elements, Fatma Al-Sharji
Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research
Calcium carbonates is one of the main components of scale that is commonly found in industrial equipment such as hot water systems. Scale formation on heater elements may lead to reduce heat efficiency and shorten the heat service life. Ion exchange softened water are used to reduce the scale formation, but excess salt during regeneration discharged to the wastewater stream, limits the reuse of wastewater for industrial purposes. As a result, non-salt alternative devices would provide consumers with the ability to reduce the impacts of ion exchange softened water without creating negative salinity impacts on wastewater stream. Magnetic water treatment …

Purpose: To compare plantar pressure variables while exercising on four ellipticals and walking.
Methods: For this cross-sectional pilot study, plantar pressure data were recorded from ten young adults while exercising on four ellipticals (True, Octane, Life Fitness, SportsArt) and walking overground. One-way repeated measures ANOVA identified …
Tunable Compact Thz Devices Based On Graphene And Other 2d Material Metasurfaces, Tianjing Guo
Tunable Compact Thz Devices Based On Graphene And Other 2d Material Metasurfaces, Tianjing Guo
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since the isolation of graphene in 2004, a large amount of research has been directed at 2D materials and their applications due to their unique characteristics. Compared with the noble metal plasmons in the visible and near-infrared frequencies, graphene can support surface plasmons in the lower frequencies of terahertz (THz) and midinfrared. Especially, the surface conductivity of graphene can be tuned by either chemical doping or electrostatic gating. As a result, the idea of designing graphene metasurfaces is attractive because of its ultra-broadband response and tunability.
It has been demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the third-order nonlinearity of graphene at …

Magnetically Induced Carrier Distribution In A Composite Rod Of Piezoelectric Semiconductors And Piezomagnetics, Guolin Wang, Jinxi Liu, Wenjie Feng, Jiashi Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this work, we study the behavior of a composite rod consisting of a piezoelectric semiconductor layer and two piezomagnetic layers under an applied axial magnetic field. Based on the phenomenological theories of piezoelectric semiconductors and piezomagnetics, a one-dimensional model is developed from which an analytical solution is obtained. The explicit expressions of the coupled fields and the numerical results show that an axially applied magnetic field produces extensional deformation through piezomagnetic coupling, the extension then produces polarization through piezoelectric coupling, and the polarization then causes the redistribution of mobile charges. Thus, the composite rod exhibits a coupling between the …

Vector Magneto-Optical Generalized Ellipsometry On Magnetic Slanted Columnar Heterostructured Thin Films, Chad Briley
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Modern material growth techniques allow for nano-engineering highly complex three dimensionally nanostructured materials. These nano-engineered materials possess highly anisotropic physical properties that are significantly different from that of their bulk counterparts. The magnetization properties of nano-engineered materials can be modified through a close range interaction known as magnetic exchange. These materials are referred to as magnetic exchange-coupled materials. Exchange-coupled magnetic materials are composite magnetic materials where the magnetization of one material is influenced by the magnetization state of the neighboring materials.
The author describes the creation of a representative sample set of exchange-coupled nanoengineered magnetic materials. These materials are created …

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Use of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) in agriculture has risen in the past decade. These systems are key to modernizing agriculture. UASs collect and elucidate data previously difficult to obtain and used to help increase agricultural efficiency and production. Typical commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) UASs are limited by small payloads and short flight times. Such limits inhibit their ability to provide abundant data at multiple spatiotemporal scales. In this paper, we describe the design and construction of the tethered aircraft unmanned system (TAUS), which is a novel power-over-tether UAS leveraging the physical presence of the tether to launch multiple sensors along …

Automatic Delamination Segmentation For Bridge Deck Based On Encoder-Decoder Deep Learning Through Uav-Based Thermography, Chongsheng Cheng, Zhexiong Shang, Zhigang Shen
Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Faculty Publications
Concrete deck delamination often demonstrates strong variations in size, shape, and temperature distribution under the influences of outdoor weather conditions. The strong variations create challenges for pure analytical solutions in infrared image segmentation of delaminated areas. The recently developed supervised deep learning approach demonstrated the potentials in achieving automatic segmentation of RGB images. However, its effectiveness in segmenting thermal images remains under-explored. The main challenge lies in the development of specific models and the generation of a large range of labeled infrared images for training. To address this challenge, a customized deep learning model based on encoder-decoder architecture is proposed …

Climate change will impact soil properties such as soil moisture, organic carbon and temperature and changes in these properties will influence the sorption, biodegradation and leaching of trace organic contaminants to groundwater. In this study, we conducted a modeling case study to evaluate atrazine and estrone transport in the subsurface under current and future climate conditions at a field site in central Nebraska. According to the modeling results, in the future, enhanced evapotranspiration and increased average air temperature may cause drier soil conditions, which consequently reduces the biodegradation of atrazine and estrone in the water phase. On the other hand, …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Anomaly detection for non-linear dynamical system plays an important role in ensuring the system stability. However, it is usually complex and has to be solved by large-scale simulation which requires extensive computing resources. In this paper, we propose a novel anomaly detection scheme in non-linear dynamical system based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to capture complex temporal changes of the time sequence and make multi-step predictions. Specifically, we first present the framework of LSTM-based anomaly detection in non-linear dynamical system, including data preprocessing, multi-step prediction and anomaly detection. According to the prediction requirement, two types of training modes are explored …

In the last years, acoustic word embeddings (AWEs) have gained significant interest in the research community. It applies specifically to the application of acoustic embeddings in the Query-by Example Spoken Term Detection (QbE-STD) search and related word discrimination tasks. It has been shown that AWEs learned for the word or phone classification in one or several languages can outperform approaches that use dynamic time warping (DTW). In this paper, a new method of learning AWEs in the DTW framework is proposed. It employs a multitask triplet neural network to generate the AWEs. The triplet network learns acoustic representations of words …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Sand and gravel deposits, one of the most common natural resources, are used as aggregates mostly by the construction industry, and their extraction contributes significantly to a region's economy. Thus, it is critical to locate sand and gravel deposits, and evaluate their quantity and quality safely and quickly. However, information on aggregate resources is generally only available from conventional two-dimensional (2-D) geologic maps, and direct field measurements for quality analysis at outcrops are time consuming and are often not possible due to safety concerns, or simply because exposures are too difficult to access. In this study, we presented a methodology …
