Anonymous And Efficient Message Authentication Scheme For Smart Grid, Libing Wu, Jing Wang, Sherali Zeadally, Debiao He May 2019

Anonymous And Efficient Message Authentication Scheme For Smart Grid, Libing Wu, Jing Wang, Sherali Zeadally, Debiao He

Information Science Faculty Publications

Smart grid has emerged as the next-generation electricity grid with power flow optimization and high power quality. Smart grid technologies have attracted the attention of industry and academia in the last few years. However, the tradeoff between security and efficiency remains a challenge in the practical deployment of the smart grid. Most recently, Li et al. proposed a lightweight message authentication scheme with user anonymity and claimed that their scheme is provably secure. But we found that their scheme fails to achieve mutual authentication and mitigate some typical attacks (e.g., impersonation attack, denial of service attack) in the smart grid …

Do Transportation Network Companies Decrease Or Increase Congestion?, Gregory D. Erhardt, Sneha Roy, Drew Cooper, Bhargava Sana, Mei Chen, Joe Castiglione

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This research examines whether transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft, live up to their stated vision of reducing congestion in major cities. Existing research has produced conflicting results and has been hampered by a lack of data. Using data scraped from the application programming interfaces of two TNCs, combined with observed travel time data, we find that contrary to their vision, TNCs are the biggest contributor to growing traffic congestion in San Francisco. Between 2010 and 2016, weekday vehicle hours of delay increased by 62% compared to 22% in a counterfactual 2016 scenario without TNCs. The findings …

Bamorc: A Software Package For Accurate And Robust 13C Reference Correction Of Protein Nmr Spectra, Xi Chen, Andrey Smelter, Hunter N. B. Moseley

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We describe Bayesian Model Optimized Reference Correction (BaMORC), a software package that performs 13C chemical shifts reference correction for either assigned or unassigned peak lists derived from protein NMR spectra. BaMORC provides an intuitive command line interface that allows non-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experts to detect and correct 13C chemical shift referencing errors of unassigned peak lists at the very beginning of NMR data analysis, further lowering the bar of expertise required for effective protein NMR analysis. Furthermore, BaMORC provides an application programming interface for integration into sophisticated protein NMR data analysis pipelines, both before and after the …

Design Optimization Of Electric Machines With 3d Fea And A New Hybrid Doe-De Numerical Algorithm, Narges Taran, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Greg Heins, Dean Patterson, Ping Zhou May 2019

Design Optimization Of Electric Machines With 3d Fea And A New Hybrid Doe-De Numerical Algorithm, Narges Taran, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Greg Heins, Dean Patterson, Ping Zhou

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the multi-objective optimization of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines with ferrite spoke-type magnets, utilizing 3D finite element models. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is computationally expensive, and furthermore, substantial computation time is expended by optimization algorithms in evaluating low performing designs whose performance is far from the optimum if the search space is not specified correctly. In this regard, this work proposes two new methods for identifying the search space. The search is limited to ranges of input geometric variables where high performing designs are likely to be found. The optimization algorithm utilized is based on surrogate …

Inductance Testing For Ipm Synchronous Machines According To The New Ieee Std 1812 And Typical Laboratory Practices, Vandana Rallabandi, Narges Taran, Dan M. Ionel, Ping Zhou

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

Equivalent circuit parameters serve as the basis for performance estimation and implementation of power electronic drives controls and therefore their accurate evaluation is very important. Specified in the newly approved IEEE Std 1812, a short-circuit test can be employed, in combination with an open-circuit measurement, in order to determine the back emf and the synchronous inductance. In the case of interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines, this approach can be used only to determine the d-axis inductance and additional and separate measurements are required for the q-axis inductance. In this respect, various methods, inclusive of dc step response tests, on-load tests, …

A Comparative Study Of Methods For Calculating Ac Winding Losses In Permanent Magnet Machines, Narges Taran, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Greg Heins, Dean Patterson

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

In this study different methods of estimating the additional ac winding loss due to eddy currents at open-circuit are explored. A comparative study of 2D and 3D FEA, and hybrid numerical and analytical methods is performed in order to recommend feasible approaches to be employed. Axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine case studies are included, namely a machine with open slots and a coreless configuration. These machine topologies are expected to present a substantial amount of ac winding loss, which would therefore need to be considered during optimal design. This study is one of the first ones to compare meticulous …

Automatic Look-Up Table Based Real-Time Phase Unwrapping For Phase Measuring Profilometry And Optimal Reference Frequency Selection, Jianwen Song, Daniel L. Lau, Yo-Sung Ho, Kai Liu Apr 2019

Automatic Look-Up Table Based Real-Time Phase Unwrapping For Phase Measuring Profilometry And Optimal Reference Frequency Selection, Jianwen Song, Daniel L. Lau, Yo-Sung Ho, Kai Liu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

For temporal phase unwrapping in phase measuring profilometry, it has recently been reported that two phases with co-prime frequencies can be absolutely unwrapped using a look-up table; however, frequency selection and table construction has been performed manually without optimization. In this paper, a universal phase unwrapping method is proposed to unwrap phase flexibly and automatically by using geometric analysis, and thus we can programmatically build a one-dimensional or two-dimensional look-up table for arbitrary two co-prime frequencies to correctly unwrap phases in real time. Moreover, a phase error model related to the defocus effect is derived to figure out an optimal …

Sliding-Mode-Observer-Based Position Estimation For Sensorless Control Of The Planar Switched Reluctance Motor, Jundi Sun, Guang-Zhong Cao, Su-Dan Huang, Yeping Peng, Jiangbiao He, Qing-Quan Qian

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a position estimation method for a planar switched reluctance motor (PSRM). In the method, a second-order sliding mode observer (SMO) is used to achieve sensorless control of a PSRM for the first time. A sensorless closed-loop control strategy based on the SMO without a position sensor for the PSRM is constructed. The SMO mainly consists of a flux linkage estimation, an adaptive current estimation, an observing error calculation, and a position estimation section. An adaptive current observer is applied in the current estimation section to minimize the error between the measured and estimated currents and to increase …

A Generative Human-Robot Motion Retargeting Approach Using A Single Rgbd Sensor, Sen Wang, Xinxin Zuo, Runxiao Wang, Ruigang Yang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The goal of human-robot motion retargeting is to let a robot follow the movements performed by a human subject. Typically in previous approaches, the human poses are precomputed from a human pose tracking system, after which the explicit joint mapping strategies are specified to apply the estimated poses to a target robot. However, there is not any generic mapping strategy that we can use to map the human joint to robots with different kinds of configurations. In this paper, we present a novel motion retargeting approach that combines the human pose estimation and the motion retargeting procedure in a unified …

Surface-Controlled Dissolution Rates: A Case Study Of Nanoceria In Carboxylic Acid Solutions, Eric A. Grulke, Matthew J. Beck, Robert A. Yokel, Jason M. Unrine, Uschi M. Graham, Matthew L. Hancock

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Nanoparticle dissolution in local milieu can affect their ecotoxicity and therapeutic applications. For example, carboxylic acid release from plant roots can solubilize nanoceria in the rhizosphere, affecting cerium uptake in plants. Nanoparticle dispersions were dialyzed against ten carboxylic acid solutions for up to 30 weeks; the membrane passed cerium-ligand complexes but not nanoceria. Dispersion and solution samples were analyzed for cerium by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Particle size and shape distributions were measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nanoceria dissolved in all carboxylic acid solutions, leading to cascades of progressively smaller nanoparticles and producing soluble products. The dissolution …

Novel Calibrated Short Tr Recovery (Castrr) Method For Brain-Blood Partition Coefficient Correction Enhances Gray-White Matter Contrast In Blood Flow Measurements In Mice, Scott W. Thalman, David K. Powell, Ai-Ling Lin Apr 2019

Novel Calibrated Short Tr Recovery (Castrr) Method For Brain-Blood Partition Coefficient Correction Enhances Gray-White Matter Contrast In Blood Flow Measurements In Mice, Scott W. Thalman, David K. Powell, Ai-Ling Lin

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The goal of the study was to develop a novel, rapid Calibrated Short TR Recovery (CaSTRR) method to measure the brain-blood partition coefficient (BBPC) in mice. The BBPC is necessary for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF) using tracer-based techniques like arterial spin labeling (ASL), but previous techniques required prohibitively long acquisition times so a constant BBPC equal to 0.9 mL/g is typically used regardless of studied species, condition, or disease. An accelerated method of BBPC correction could improve regional specificity in CBF maps particularly in white matter. Male C57Bl/6N mice (n = 8) were scanned at 7T using CaSTRR …

A Historical Sedimentary Record Of Mercury In A Shallow Eutrophic Lake: Impacts Of Human Activities And Climate Change, Hanxiao Zhang, Shouliang Huo, Kevin M. Yeager, Beidou Xi, Jingtian Zhang, Fengchang Wu

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Mercury and its derivatives are hazardous environmental pollutants and could affect the aquatic ecosystems and human health by biomagnification. Lake sediments can provide important historical information regarding changes in pollution levels and thus trace anthropogenic or natural influences. This research investigates the 100-year history of mercury (Hg) deposition in sediments from Chao Lake, a shallow eutrophic lake in China. The results indicate that the Hg deposition history can be separated into three stages (pre-1960s, 1960s–1980s, and post-1980s) over the last 100 years. Before the 1960s, Hg concentrations in the sediment cores varied little and had no spatial difference. Since the …

The mechanical properties of the soft palate can be associated with breathing abnormalities. Dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) is a naturally occurring equine soft palate disorder caused by displacement of the caudal edge of the soft palate. Snoring and a more serious, sometimes life-threatening, condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are forms of sleep-related breathing disorders in humans which may involve the soft palate. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of injecting the protein crosslinker genipin into the soft palate to modify its mechanical properties for the treatment of equine DDSP with potential implications …

Determination Of Constructed Pavement Layer Thicknesses Using Nondestructive Testing (Ndt), Brad W. Rister, Jamie Creech, Kean H. Ashurst Jr. Apr 2019

Determination Of Constructed Pavement Layer Thicknesses Using Nondestructive Testing (Ndt), Brad W. Rister, Jamie Creech, Kean H. Ashurst Jr.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Using nondestructive testing (NDT) to measure the thickness of pavement layers can improve the overall life of a new concrete and/or asphalt pavement. Conventional test methods require the extraction of a core from the pavement section to verify its thickness. Currently, two NDT technologies are commercially available which eliminate or reduce the need to core the existing pavement for thickness verification. The MIT-Scan-T2 (T2) utilizes magnetic pulse induction coupled with preset metal plates to obtain a thickness value. Measurements can be obtained quickly to an accuracy of +/– 2 mm. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) uses electromagnetic radiation to determine pavement …

Nano-Scale Rare Earth Distribution In Fly Ash Derived From The Combustion Of The Fire Clay Coal, Kentucky, James C. Hower, Dali Qian, Nicolas J. Briot, Eduardo Santillan-Jimenez, Madison M. Hood, Ross K. Taggart, Heileen Hsu-Kim

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

Fly ash from the combustion of eastern Kentucky Fire Clay coal in a southeastern United States pulverized-coal power plant was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). TEM combined with elemental analysis via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed that rare earth elements (REE; specifically, La, Ce, Nd, Pr, and Sm) were distributed within glassy particles. In certain cases, the REE were accompanied by phosphorous, suggesting a monazite or similar mineral form. However, the electron diffraction patterns of apparent phosphate minerals were not definitive, and P-lean regions of the glass consisted …

Limit Equilibrium Method-Based Shear Strength Prediction For Corroded Reinforced Concrete Beam With Inclined Bars, Yafei Ma, Baoyong Lu, Zhongzhao Guo, Lei Wang, Hailong Chen, Jianren Zhang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Shear strength is a widely investigated parameter for reinforced concrete structures. The corrosion of reinforcement results in shear strength reduction. Corrosion has become one of the main deterioration factors in reinforced concrete beam. This paper proposes a shear strength model for beams with inclined bars based on a limit equilibrium method. The proposed model can be applied to both corroded and uncorroded reinforced concrete beams. Besides the tensile strength of longitudinal steel bars, the shear capacity provided by the concrete on the top of the diagonal crack, the tensile force of the shear steel at the diagonal crack, the degradation …
