The study of atmospheric particulates plays a crucial role in both climate change studies and the improvement of hypersonic travel. The current issue at hand is a lack of knowledge of stratospheric particulate content and the high cost that is associated with conducting research at these altitudes. This project focuses on the development of an Atmospheric Particle Imaging System (APIS) to be a low-weight, low-cost optical payload. In-depth knowledge of geometric design principles is a prerequisite for delivering road projects that provide safe and efficient multimodal mobility for all users. Historically, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) early-career design staff arrived at the agency with little design experience. Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machines are increasingly being studied for low-speed, direct-drive applications due to their compact structure and high torque output. This study proposes two novel dual-stator AFPM vernier machine topologies: a spoke-type rotor configuration and a back-to-back Halbach array rotor. Both designs employ dual outer stators with 12 double-layer concentrated windings, and high-polarity rotor configurations to enhance flux concentration. A three-dimensional finite element model, which was previously validated by a laboratory prototype motor was utilized to evaluate the electromagnetic characteristics of the proposed topologies. Wireless charging of unmanned ground vehicles and aircraft has been proposed to increase charging reliability and security, allow for autonomous functionality, and either reduce battery size or increase continuous flight time. This paper presents an innovative method for nonlinear scaling of electric machines by integrating machine learning (ML)-based meta-modeling with a differential evolution (DE) algorithm. The technique is applied to high-performance combined-excitation synchronous electric motors which exhibit highly nonlinear characteristics, making performance scaling challenging. The proposed approach employs an ML meta-model trained on data obtained from finite element analysis (FEA), utilizing an experimentally validated model for nonlinear scaling and performance prediction at different power ratings. High-performance electric propulsion systems require fault tolerant, power dense, electric machines capable of maintaining high efficiency across a dynamic range of operation. To address these inherently conflicting requirements, multi-motor architectures employing electromechanically coupled modular configurations have been proposed to enhance system efficiency, fault tolerance, and redundancy. This paper presents a machine learning (ML) based design framework for the fast and accurate optimization of coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines. Although the absence of magnetic cores eliminates material nonlinearity, the design process remains highly nonlinear due to the complex influence of geometric parameters. To overcome the computational challenges of finite element analysis (FEA)-based optimization, a series of multi-objective differential evolution (MODE) optimizations were conducted across various machine sizes at constant power output. This paper comprehensively analyzes coreless stator axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines by investigating rotor magnetic fields, stator winding factors, and 2D/3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulations. The torque production theory in coreless AFPM machines is studied with detailed derivations for flux density and current density. With adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) expected in future grids, voltage regulation methods need to be reevaluated and improved to ensure their effectiveness under the high volatility of renewable generation. A multi-timescale cluster-based method is proposed to optimize and disperse operation of voltage controlling utility devices including capacitor banks (CBs) and load tap changers (LTCs) while allowing faster response time with customer-owned smart inverters (SIs) in-between switching operations. Internal Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (IPMs) are widely used and typically optimized to meet specific performance requirements. Parameters such as base speed, maximum torque, and maximum speed commonly define the torque- speed characteristic of a given design. This study introduces a novel machine learning approach for statistically estimating the torque-speed characteristics of IPMs using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), which models predictions as random variables. By leveraging uncertainty quantification, the study explores sampling strategies that enable the construction of a high-precision meta-model with minimal error and uncertainty. The increasing deployment of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) necessitates effective strategies for supporting grid services while minimizing degradation that may compromise system longevity. High charge/discharge rates (C-rate) and imbalanced operation of multi-unit BESS configurations may accelerate degradation. This paper proposes a degradation-aware operational optimization based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) for coordinating multiple BESS units under physical and operational constraints. Staff shortages and reduced budgets have made transportation agencies increasingly reliant on intelligent transportation systems (ITS) for commercial motor (CMV) vehicle enforcement activities. Technologies such as license plate readers, US Department of Transportation (USDOT) number readers, weigh-in-motion scales, static scales, and preclearance systems like PrePass and Drivewyze help automate enforcement and free up personnel to focus on inspecting those vehicles most likely to pose compliance and/or safety risks. Each day, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control specialists (ATCSs) handle over 44,000 flights and oversee 29 million square miles of the United States National Airspace System. However, staffing shortages have grown more acute over the past 10 years, which has led to delayed and cancelled flights, a higher number of close misses over a short period of time, and frustrating air travel experiences. While the FAA has redoubled its efforts to recruit more ATCSs, it has limited training capacity. State departments of transportation use bridge deck overlay systems to prolong bridge deck service lives. Consisting of a thin layer of material applied to a concrete bridge deck surface, overlays form a protective barrier that improves ride quality, protects embedded reinforcement from harsh environmental conditions, enhances structure durability, and improves deck drainage. Over the past 20 years, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has made significant investments in overlays, rehabilitating nearly 5,000 bridge decks with them — roughly 1/3 of all bridges statewide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published the Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (6th Edition) (MMUCC) in 2024. This updated version of the MMUCC contains recommendations for improving and standardizing electronic crash data. Its guidelines address the collection and presentation of 105 data elements and 1,056 data attributes. To facilitate a possible redesign of Kentucky’s crash reporting process, Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) researchers reviewed the updated criteria and evaluated the degree to which the state complies with its recommended methods of gathering, storing, and presenting crash data. This study evaluates the feasibility for developing and maintaining a comprehensive tractor truck trailer database. The commercial motor vehicle (CMV) community currently lacks a cross-jurisdictional, centralized repository for commercial trailers registered in United States and Canadian jurisdictions. Existing federal databases provide information on interstate commercial motor carriers, vehicles, and drivers but exclude trailers. Similarly, IRP and IFTA do not collect trailer-level data, and trailer data is displayed inconsistently across its customer base. Approximately one fifth of violations in Kentucky during inspections from 2020 to 2022 were attributed to trailers, including worn tires, inadequate brakes or improper registration. The rise of …

This report examines the first year’s operational data from Kentucky’s first utility wind turbine, the 37 m hub-height 90-kilowatt NPS100C-27, operated by the PPL Corporation Research and Development at their Renewable Integration Research Facility in Mercer County, Kentucky. During that year, the turbine was available 95% of the time, spinning 85% of the time, and generating power 78% of the time, and had a net capacity factor of 11%. Researchers obtained and processed probe speed data from HERE Technologies and integrated them with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s highway inventory to develop congestion and travel time reliability performance metrics. This report summarizes analyses conducted using HERE speed data for 2022 – 2023. HERE data were processed using an established methodology, after which they were aligned with Kentucky’s highway inventory network. Analysis found that 2022 – 2023 HERE data offer significant improvements in coverage and quality over previous years. Given the vastness of the state’s transportation network, KYTC needs a robust method for prioritizing pavement preservation projects. The Cabinet has relied on pavement condition ratings, data collected using Laser Crack Measurement Systems, and input from district-level staff to prioritize these types of projects. It is very challenging to measure moisture levels in oils. There is not a good method to measure it. Using the novel moisture sensor invented by Dr. Zhi David Chen, we tried various methods to measure the moisture levels in oils. The initial trials are to immerse the sensor chip into the oils to see any sensor reading changes with the change of moisture levels in oils. Highway construction workers operate in high-stress, hazardous settings where they have to perform physically taxing labor in environments where exposure to variable weather conditions, heavy equipment, high volumes of vehicle traffic, and other conditions that induce stress and anxiety are the norm. Up to 70% of workers in this industry have reported experiencing mental health issues, including secondary traumatic stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders. Smart electric vehicle (EV) charging control methods from a central utility hub often require communication infrastructure over a large service area of electric power distribution systems with a large number of nodes. Industry standards such as Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.1 have evolved to include topologies for local controllers to the individual chargers, i.e. EV aggregator zones. A machine learning (ML) application of k-means clustering is proposed to establish zones for coordination of EV charging based on grid strength and EV owner decision-making to charge per day.
