A Novel Approach For Real-Time Quality Monitoring In Machining Of Aerospace Alloy Through Acoustic Emission Signal Transformation For Dnn, David Adeniji, Kyle Oligee, Julius Schoop

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Gamma titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl) is considered a high-performance, low-density replacement for nickel-based superalloys in the aerospace industry due to its high specific strength, which is retained at temperatures above 800◦C. However, low damage tolerance, i.e., brittle material behavior with a propensity to rapid crack propagation, has limited the application of γ-TiAl. Any cracks introduced during manufacturing would dramatically lower the useful (fatigue) life of γ-TiAl components, making the workpiece surface’s quality from finish machining a critical component to product quality and performance. To address this issue and enable more widespread use of γ-TiAl, this research aims to develop a real-time …

Mechanical Engineering Graduate Research

The estimation of PV production has been widely investigated previously, where many empirical models have been proposed to account for wind and soiling effects for specific locations. However, the performance of these models varies among the investigated sites. Hence, it is vital to assess and evaluate the performance of these models and benchmark them against the common PV estimation model that accounts only for the ambient temperature. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the accuracy and performance of four empirical wind models considering the soiling effect, and compare them to the standard model for a 103 MW PV plant in …

Thin Liquid Films On A Rotary Bell Atomizer In Surface-Following Coordinates, Mark Doerre, Nelson Akafuah

Institute of Research for Technology Development Faculty Publications

This article analyzes a published formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations cast into surface-following coordinates and provides some additional mathematical background to follow the article. Ubiquitous in the paint shops of automotive plants around the world, a high-speed rotary bell is succinctly described as a rapidly spinning concave axisymmetric surface with liquid paint supplied from a port coinciding with the center of rotation. The spinning surface transfers momentum to the paint film causing it to flow outward. Upon reaching the bell periphery, it is flung off, subsequently forming an atomized spray transferred to an automotive body through advection and electrostatics. Common …

Therefore, near-miss reporting can serve as a useful tool for managing safety as it allows for workers to identify and managers to address potential risk factors within construction sites. While most construction companies have implemented some method for reporting near-miss events, many organizations, such as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), struggle with …

Strain Energy Analysis Related To Strata Failure During Caving Operations, Caroline Gerwig Jan 2022

Strain Energy Analysis Related To Strata Failure During Caving Operations, Caroline Gerwig

Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering

For stiff beams that can form over the gob of longwall panels, the potential seismic magnitude of the energy released upon strata caving is estimated. Analytical calculations are used to verify two-dimensional models of longwall roof beams to determine the strain energy and gravitational energy developed, that will then be released to surrounding mine workings. Models are developed using RS2 to model the stress, strain, and deflection along the bottom of the longwall roof beam to calculate gravitational and strain energies.

The total energy is then converted to seismic magnitude. Strain energy was consistently less than gravitational energy, except for …

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Landslides are frequently observed in mountainous places following prolonged periods of rain, frequently resulting in substantial topography changes. They pose a significant risk to human lives and the built environment globally, particularly in areas prone to excessive rainfall. While slope failures can occur because of human-caused factors such as slope loading or toe cutting for construction purposes, many failures occur because of rainfall penetrating an otherwise stable slope. A greater understanding of the characteristics and mechanics of landslides is consequently critical for geotechnical research, particularly in evaluating prospective mitigation strategies. The potential of slope failure is a primary consideration when …
