Spectral Shaping For The Hearing Impaired, Brian D. Mclean Jan 1987

Spectral Shaping For The Hearing Impaired, Brian D. Mclean

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Presented is a method for shaping the audio spectrum in order to improve speech intelligibility for the hearing impaired. Audiological data is used to design a finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter using the frequency sampling method. Cubic spline interpolation is used to generate any number of frequency samples from the limited number available from audiological data. The computer aided design procedure presented allows the filter designer to specify hearing threshold levels and threshold of discomfort levels at audiogram frequencies. The algorithm uses cubic spline interpolation to generate a smooth curve of gain versus frequency. Next, root-mean-square (RMS) error is …

The Use Of A Portable Microcomputer As A Data Collection Tool To Support Integrated Simulation Support Environments: A Concept, James E. Wilkinson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Advances in simulation methodology, and the computer support systems to implement these methodologies, have led to the development of integrated simulation support environments. These environments, or collection of software tools, seek to aid the analyst in developing models, data management and analysis, and data presentation.

While an integrated simulation environment provides a more organized structure for managing and performing simulation projects, and provides a database management structure for storing, manipulating, and analyzing data, they do not address the actual process of going out and obtaining the data. As a result, many of the common problems associated with poor problem and …

Human Factors Compatibility Concerns In The Selection Of Display Technologies For Computer And Data Terminals, Francis C. Westerfield Jan 1987

Human Factors Compatibility Concerns In The Selection Of Display Technologies For Computer And Data Terminals, Francis C. Westerfield

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Human factors considerations are often overlooked in the selection of electronic computer displays. When cost is used as the only determining factor, the resulting product may not be commercially successful because of an inadequate display.

To help avoid this situation, designers and users should be aware of the various factors involved in proper display selection. These factors were developed by a synthesis of existing scientific and industrial literature on the subject and are explained in this paper.

The first factor is a basic knowledge of the structure, characteristics, and function of the human visual system. The theory of sight, anatomy …

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Multiple Phase Screens, Arthur R. Weeks Jan 1987

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Multiple Phase Screens, Arthur R. Weeks

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An experimental and a theoretical analysis for a laser beam propagating through multiple phase screens was performed. The theoretical analysis showed that the statistics for the intensity fluctuations, which can be predicted by the HK and the I-K distributions, could be derived from a multiplicative process using statistical distributions derived from Gaussian statistics. For the single phase screen experiment, the experimental normalized moments were compared with the normalized moments of both the HK and I-K distributions . In addition, the intensity data was lowpass filtered to yield moments that are predicted by the gamma distribution. The single phase screen data …

The Design Of A Processing Element For The Systolic Array Implementation Of A Kalman Filter, John P. Condorodis

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Kalman filter is an important component of optimal estimation theory. It has applications in a wide range of high performance control systems including navigational, fire control, and targeting systems. The Kalman filter, however, has not been utilized to its full potential due to the limitations of its inherent computational intensiveness which requires "off-line" processing or allows only low bandwidth real-time applications.

The recent advances in VLSI circuit technology have created the opportunity to design algorithms and data structures for direct implementation in integrated circuits. A systolic architecture is a concept which allows the construction of massively parallel systems in …

Radiant Energy Transfer And Radiant Barrier Systems In Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip W. Fairey Dec 1986

Radiant Energy Transfer And Radiant Barrier Systems In Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip W. Fairey

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In Florida and other southern climates we depend on a number of strategies to keep heat out of buildings. Mostly, these affect heat gains by conduction or convection. In the average house, insulating walls and ceilings primarily restricts conduction. Double-glazed windows restrict both conductive and convective heat gain. We have largely ignored radiation - the third means of heat transfer - except in using window treatments and coatings that reflect, absorb or shade from solar energy. But research points to exciting potential for reducing heat gain in buildings by controlling radiation transfer in walls and ceilings through the use of …

Pulse Width Modulated Adaptive Delta Modem Design And Analysis, Gregory L. Milne Jan 1986

Pulse Width Modulated Adaptive Delta Modem Design And Analysis, Gregory L. Milne

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A unique design of a voiceband adaptive delta modem will be presented. The modulator utilizes a constant amplitude variable width pulse combined with the principles of delta modulation. This results in a modem that has lower amplitude distortion, requires less transmission channel bandwidth, and is less prone to slope overload than conventional adaptive delta modems. The design also allows the use of a simple single integration demodulator while maintaining fidelity.

The modem design and analysis is presented assuming a transmission channel which is bandwidth limited and amplitude limited.

The Effect Of Detention Period On The Clarification Efficiency Of Nitrified Activated Sludge, James C. Boyd Jan 1986

The Effect Of Detention Period On The Clarification Efficiency Of Nitrified Activated Sludge, James C. Boyd

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Proper performance of the final clarifier in the activated sludge process is vital to total system efficiency. Inadequate clarification can adversely affect substrate removal efficiency due to the biochemical oxygen demand exerted by solids lost in the clarifier effluent. Detention period is one factor which influences clarification performance and thus is of interest to the designer engineer. Also of interest is the relationship between detention period and rising sludge conditions in the clarifier, which can lead to a deterioration in clarification efficiency. Rising Sludge conditions are believed to be caused by the denitrification of nitrified activated sludge in the final …

Optimizing Scanning Mirror System Performance Using Solid State Piezoelectric Actuators, Thomas J. Tomasetti

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to design a scanning mirror system using piezoelectric actuators. A dual-cantilevered bimorph electromechanical coupling is presented, which maximizes the amount of angular deflection possible with an applied field. Two types of feedback methods are employed: rate sensing, which provides resonance damping, and position sensing for increased bandwidth and decreased hysteresis. A prototype system, including the actuator and feedback mechanisms, is developed. Its performance compares favorably with its model and is capable of plus and minus five degrees of angular deflection with a bandwidth of 300 Hertz.

Separation Plane Priority In Computer Image Generation, Keith A. Stump Jan 1986

Separation Plane Priority In Computer Image Generation, Keith A. Stump

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Flight simulators are devices in which air crews can be trained without the use of actual aircraft. Potentially dangerous maneuvers, such as air-to-air refueling, and destructive exercises, such as evasive action from weaponry or aerial dogfights, can be practiced repeatedly with no risk to pilot or crew. Flight simulators are cost effective since the fuel costs associated with training pilots in actual aircraft can be excessive. Flight simulators offer an alternate training method with reduced cost. The task of a visual flight simulator is to present the trainee with scenes representative of those that would be seen if the actual …

A Zero Extraction And Separation Technique For Surface Acoustic Wave And Digital Signal Processing Fir Filter Implementation, Keith V. Lindsay

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Presented is a new method of separating the zeros of a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter producing optimal digital filter of surface acoustic wave (SAW) design implementation. Overviews of zero extraction algorithms and of FIR filter design using the Remez Exchange algorithm are presented (McClellen et al. 1973).

The computer aided design (CAD) procedure presented allows the designer to specify the general filter characteristic which the Remez algorithm translates to FIR time domain coefficients. These coefficients are readily translated to the frequency (z) domain, producing an Nth order polynomial in z. The characteristic polynomial is factored to determine all roots …

The Design And Implementation Of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices For Linear Fm And Nonlinear Fm Pulse Compression Technique For Radar Applications, James C. Walker Jan 1986

The Design And Implementation Of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices For Linear Fm And Nonlinear Fm Pulse Compression Technique For Radar Applications, James C. Walker

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to design, fabricate, and compare dispersive SAW devices using both linear FM and a new non-linear FM scheme. This new non-linear FM scheme uses the Blackman function as the modulating signal of the FM waveform. Up-chirped and V-chirped devices for both linear and the new non-linear FM scheme and their corresponding matched filters are compared.

Design considerations are discussed in detail. An efficient sampling algorithm (which can also be applied to other non-linearly modulated FM waveforms) developed to facilitate the design of the SAW devices is presented.
