Class-E Cascode Power Amplifier Analysis And Design For Long Term Reliability, Karan Kutty
Class-E Cascode Power Amplifier Analysis And Design For Long Term Reliability, Karan Kutty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the Class-E power amplifier operating at 5.2 GHz. Since the operation of this amplifier applies a lot of stress on the switching transistor, a cascode topology was applied in order to reduce the drain-source voltage stress. Such an amplifier was designed and optimized in order to improve stability, power added efficiency, and matching. A layout for the said design was then created to be fabrication-ready using the TSMC 0.18 um technology. Post-layout simulations were performed in order to realize a more realistic circuit performance with the layout design in mind. Long-term stress effects, such as oxide breakdown, …

Industrial generator components experience high stresses and electrical fields during their service life. Material integrity is key in guaranteeing component performance. CuNi2SiZr, used as rotor wedges in generators, serve to maintain rotor slot content in place while experiencing high centrifugal stresses and low cycle fatigue during start and stop at elevated temperature. The quality and integrity of this material in service can be directly related to its microstructure, which is determined by the processing procedures of the wedges. In this study, the microstructure development in this material is evaluated to eliminate grain boundary defects by optimizing processing parameters, determining the …
Analyzing Instructtion Based Cache Replacement Policies, Ping Xiang
Analyzing Instructtion Based Cache Replacement Policies, Ping Xiang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The increasing speed gap between microprocessors and off-chip DRAM makes last-level caches (LLCs) a critical component for computer performance. Multi core processors aggravate the problem since multiple processor cores compete for the LLC. As a result, LLCs typically consume a significant amount of the die area and effective utilization of LLCs is mandatory for both performance and power efficiency. We present a novel replacement policy for last-level caches (LLCs). The fundamental observation is to view LLCs as a shared resource among multiple address streams with each stream being generated by a static memory access instruction. The management of LLCs in …
A New Development Of Feedback Controller For Left Ventricular Assist Device, Yu Wang
A New Development Of Feedback Controller For Left Ventricular Assist Device, Yu Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rotary Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump surgically implanted in patients with end-stage congestive heart failure to help maintain the flow of blood from the sick heart. The rotary type pumps are controlled by varying the impeller speed to control the amount of blood flowing through the LVAD. One important challenge in using these devices is to prevent the occurrence of excessive pumping of blood from the left ventricle (known as suction) that may cause it to collapse due to the high pump speed. The development of a proper feedback controller for the pump speed is …

Feasibility Study Of Lightweight High-Strength Hollow Core Balsa-Frp Composite Beams Under Flexure, Kevin O'Neill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States of America's Military, more specifically the Army, has since the late 1990's had a vested interest in the development of super-lightweight, portable, short-span composite bridge and decking components to replace aging heavy metal-alloy machine driven modular systems. The following study looks at the feasibility of using balsa wood as the structural core material in fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapped hollow-core composites in short-span bridge applications. The balsa provides shear resistance and the FRP the flexural resistance, resulting in extremely high strength-to-weight and strength-to-depth ratios. Several scaled short span specimens were constructed and tested using a variety of …

Optimized Market Introduction Of Large Capital Products (Lcp) With Long Development And Learning Cycles, Antje Lembcke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Any product sold is expected to be reliable and available when the customer wants to operate it. Companies that produce large capital products (LCP), such as rockets, satellites, or large gas turbines to generate electrical energy, tend to shy away from extending their testing and validation method above the requirements by law, mainly due to the very high costs of each additional test and the uncertain return on investment. This research shows that today’s state of the art validation methods for LCP, required by law, or suggested in literature, and adapted by these industries, are not capable of capturing all …

Development Of Optical Coherence Tomography For Tissue Diagnostics, Panomsak Meemon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microvasculature can be found in almost every part of the human body, including the internal organs. Importantly, abnormal changes in microvasculature are usually related to pathological development of the tissue cells. Monitoring of changes in blood flow properties in microvasculature, therefore, provides useful diagnostic information about pathological conditions in biological tissues as exemplified in glaucoma, diabetes, age related macular degeneration, port wine stains, burn-depth, and potentially skin cancer. However, the capillary network is typically only one cell in wall thickness with 5 to 10 microns in diameter and located in the dermis region of skin. Therefore, a non-invasive flow imaging …

Fundamental Study Of Mechanical And Chemical Degradation Mechanisms Of Pem Fuel Cell Membranes, Wonseok Yoon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the important factors determining the lifetime of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is membrane degradation and failure. The lack of effective mitigation methods is largely due to the currently very limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms for mechanical and chemical degradations of fuel cell membranes. In order to understand degradation of membranes in fuel cells, two different experimental approaches were developed; one is fuel cell testing under open circuit voltage (OCV) with bi-layer configuration of the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and the other is a modified gas phase Fenton's test. Accelerated degradation tests for polymer electrolyte membrane …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors provide versatility in that they can offer wireless, passive operation in numerous environments. Various SAW device embodiments may also be employed for retrieval of the sensed data. Single sensor systems typically use a single carrier frequency and a simple device embodiment since tagging is not required. However, it is necessary in a multi-sensor environment to both identify the sensor and retrieve the information. Overlapping sensor data signals in time and frequency present problems when attempting to collect the sensed data at the receiver. This dissertation defines a system simulation environment exclusive to SAW sensors. The …
