A Systems Approach To Assessing, Interpreting And Applying Human Error Mishap Data To Mitigate Risk Of Future Incidents In A Space Exploration Ground Processing Operations Environment, Tiffaney Alexander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research results have shown that more than half of aviation, aerospace and aeronautics mishaps/incidents are attributed to human error. Although many existing incident report systems have been beneficial for identifying engineering failures, most of them are not designed around a theoretical framework of human error, thus failing to address core issues and causes of the mishaps. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a human error assessment framework to identify these causes. This research focused on identifying causes of human error and leading contributors to historical Launch Vehicle Ground Processing Operations mishaps based on past mishaps, near mishaps, and close calls. …
Impact Of Dynamic Message Signs On Driver Behavior Under Reduced Visibility Conditions, Ryan Selby
Impact Of Dynamic Message Signs On Driver Behavior Under Reduced Visibility Conditions, Ryan Selby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fog along roadways is a dangerous hazard that leads to crashes resulting from limited visibility. Low visibility gives drivers less time to react to potential obstacles that can suddenly appear and require immediate action. To solve this issue, early warning systems involving Dynamic Message Signs or other types of devices are used to alert drivers of the impending visibility condition so that they are prepared. This research focuses on testing the effectiveness of one form of warning systems to investigate how it impacts driver behavior in foggy conditions. To accomplish this objective, a simulation study is developed to test variables …
Energy-Aware Reconfigurable Logic Device Using Spin-Based Storage And Carbon Nanotube Switching, Mohan Krishna Gopi Krishna
Energy-Aware Reconfigurable Logic Device Using Spin-Based Storage And Carbon Nanotube Switching, Mohan Krishna Gopi Krishna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Scaling of semiconductors to the 14-nanometer range and below nanometer range introduces serious design challenges that include high static power in memories and high leakage power, hindering further integration of CMOS devices. Thus, emerging devices are under intense analysis to overcome these drawbacks caused by transistor size scaling. Spintronics technology provides excellent features such as Non-Volatility, low read power, low read delay, higher scalability as well as easy integration with CMOS in comparison with SRAM memories. In addition, Carbon-Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors (CNFETs) provide superior electrical conductivity, low delay and low power consumption in comparison with conventional CMOS technology. Thus in …
On-Orbit Inter-Satellite Radiometric Calibration Of Cross-Track Scanning Microwave Radiometers, Hamideh Ebrahimi
On-Orbit Inter-Satellite Radiometric Calibration Of Cross-Track Scanning Microwave Radiometers, Hamideh Ebrahimi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation concerns the development of an improved algorithm for the inter-satellite radiometric calibration (XCAL) for cross track scanning microwave radiometers in support of NASA's Global Precipitation Mission (GPM). This research extends previous XCAL work to assess the robustness of the CFRSL "double difference" technique for sounder X-CAL. In this work, using a two-year of observations, we present a statistical analysis of radiometric biases performed over time and viewing geometry. In theory, it is possible to apply the same X-CAL procedure developed for conical-scanning radiometers to cross-track scanners; however the implementation is generally more tedious. For example, with the cross-track …
Design And Investigation Of Vitiated-Air Heater For Oblique Detonation-Wave Engine, Matthew M. Hoban
Design And Investigation Of Vitiated-Air Heater For Oblique Detonation-Wave Engine, Matthew M. Hoban
Honors Undergraduate Theses
A facility was designed to provide high-enthalpy, hypersonic flow to a detonation chamber. Preliminary investigation identified 1300 K and Mach 5 as the total temperature and Mach number require to stabilize an oblique detonation wave inside the detonation chamber. Vitiated-air heating was the preheating method chosen to meet these capabilities. The vitiator facility heats compressed air while still retaining about 50% of the original oxygen content. Schlieren flow visualization and conventional photography was performed at the exit plane of a choke plate, which simulated the throat of a converging-diverging nozzle. A shock diamond formation was observed within the jet exhausting …
Finite Element Simulation Of Single-Lap Shear Tests Utilizing The Cohesive Zone Approach, Wilson A. Perez
Finite Element Simulation Of Single-Lap Shear Tests Utilizing The Cohesive Zone Approach, Wilson A. Perez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Many applications require adhesives with high strength to withstand the exhaustive loads encountered in regular operation. In aerospace applications, advanced adhesives are needed to bond metals, ceramics, and composites under shear loading. The lap shear test is the experiment of choice for evaluating shear strength capabilities of adhesives. Specifically during single-lap shear testing, two overlapping rectangular tabs bonded by a thin adhesive layer are subject to tension. Shear is imposed as a result. Debonding occurs when the shear strength of the adhesive is surpassed by the load applied by the testing mechanism. This research develops a finite element model (FEM) …

Control Of Metal-Release And Tuberculation In A Silica-Laden Groundwater Distribution System On The Volcanic Island Of Lana'i, Samantha Myers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A corrosion control study for two distinct water distribution systems (WDS) has been completed for the Pulama Lana'i Water Company (Pulama). This project evaluated the use of chemical inhibitors to control corrosion and tuberculation within the Manele Bay WDS and the Lana'i City WDS. Pulama provides water to a population of 3,100 residents and is considering incorporating alternative water supplies in the future. Hence, knowing baseline corrosion rates within the WDS was desired. Several groundwater wells feed each of the WDS's; however, water quality between wells varies. Well water supplied to the WDS's is generally of high quality, therefore, the …
Joint Modeling Of Traffic Related Crashes: A Copula Based Approch, Tammam Nashad
Joint Modeling Of Traffic Related Crashes: A Copula Based Approch, Tammam Nashad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study contributes to safety literature on transportation safety by employing copula based models for count frequency analysis at a macro-level. Most studies in the transportation safety area identify a single count variable (such as vehicular, pedestrian or bicycle crash counts) for a spatial unit and study the impact of exogenous variables. While the traditional count models perform adequately in the presence of a single count variable, it is necessary to modify these approaches to examine multiple dependent variables for each study unit. To that extent, the current research effort contributes to literature by developing two multivariate models based on …

Smart Grasping Using Laser And Tactile Array Sensors For Ucf-Manus- An Intelligent Assistive Robotic Manipulator, Kiran Prakash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents three improvements in the UCF MANUS Assistive Robotic Manipulator's grasping abilities. Firstly, the robot can now grasp objects that are deformable, heavy and have uneven contact surfaces without undergoing slippage during robotic operations, e.g. paper cup, filled water bottle. This is achieved by installing a high precision non-contacting Laser sensor1 that runs with an algorithm that processes raw-input data from the sensor, registers smallest variation in the relative position of the object with respect to the gripper. Secondly, the robot can grasp objects that are as light and small as single cereal grain without deforming it. To …
Passive, Wireless Saw Ofc Strain Sensor And Software Defined Radio Interrogator, James Humphries
Passive, Wireless Saw Ofc Strain Sensor And Software Defined Radio Interrogator, James Humphries
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have exhibited unique capabilities to meet the demands for many applications due to the inherent properties of SAW devices and piezoelectric materials. In particular, SAW devices have been adapted as sensors that can be configured to operate both passively and wirelessly. SAW sensors can be operated in harsh environmental extremes where typical sensor technologies are not able to operate. Because the sensors are passive, a radio transceiver is required to interrogate the sensor and receive the reflected response that has been modulated by the SAW device. This dissertation presents the design of a passive, wireless …

A new revolutionary concept was presented two decades ago, known as "semiconductor Superjunction (SJ) theory" to enhance the trade-off relationship between specific on resistance, Rsp, and off-state breakdown voltage, BV, in medium to high voltages (more than 100 V) power MOSFETs. The SJ concept was first applied and commercialized to vertical structures, but it hasn't been used yet in low voltage MOSFETs with lateral structures. This thesis provides a review of the most common structures, principles and design techniques for discrete power MOSFETs. It also presents a simulation study of the application of these SJ concepts in the design of …

Virtual Resistance Based Dc-Link Voltage Regulation For Microgrid Dg Inverters., Siddhesh Shinde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research addresses the practical issues faced by Microgrid Distributed Generation (DG) inverters when operated in islanded mode. A Microgrid (MG) is an interconnection of domestic distributed loads and low voltage distributed energy sources such as micro-turbine, wind-turbine, PVs and storage devices. These energy sources are power limited in nature and constrain the operation of DG inverters to which they are coupled. DG inverters operated in islanded mode should maintain the power balance between generation and demand. If DG inverter operating in islanded mode drains its source power below a certain limit or if it is incapable of supplying demanded …

Integrating Spray Aeration And Granular Activated Carbon For Disinfection By-Product Control In A Potable Water System, Angela Rodriguez
Integrating Spray Aeration And Granular Activated Carbon For Disinfection By-Product Control In A Potable Water System, Angela Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Public water systems add disinfectants in water treatment to inactivate microbial pathogens. Chlorine, when used as a disinfectant, reacts with natural organic matter in the water to form trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA5) disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are suspected carcinogens. The Safe Drinking Water Act's Disinfectant and Disinfection By-Product (D/DBP) Rules were promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to regulate the amount of DBPs in water systems. Regulatory compliance is based on maximum contaminant levels (MCL), measured as a locational running annual average (LRAA), for total THM (TTHM) and HAA5 of 80 µg/L and 60 µg/L, respectively. Regulated …
A Parametric Study Of Meso-Scale Patterns For Auxetic Mechanical Behavior Optimization, Matthew C. Schuler
A Parametric Study Of Meso-Scale Patterns For Auxetic Mechanical Behavior Optimization, Matthew C. Schuler
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis focuses on the development, parameterization and optimization of a novel meso-scale pattern used to induce auxetic behavior, i.e., negative Poisson's ratio, at the bulk scale. Currently, the majority of auxetic structures are too porous to be utilized in conventional load-bearing applications. For others, manufacturing methods have yet to realize the meso-scale pattern. Consequently, new auxetic structures must be developed in order to confer superior thermo-mechanical responses to structures at high temperature. Additionally, patterns that take into account manufacturing limitations, while maintaining the properties characteristically attached to negative Poisson's Ratio materials, are ideal in order to utilize the potential …
Flame-Turbulence Interaction For Deflagration To Detonation, Jessica Chambers
Flame-Turbulence Interaction For Deflagration To Detonation, Jessica Chambers
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Detonation is a high energetic mode of pressure gain combustion that exploits total pressure rise to augment high flow momentum and thermodynamic cycle efficiencies. Detonation is initiated through the Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition (DDT). This process occurs when a deflagrated flame is accelerated through turbulence induction, producing shock-flame interactions that generate violent explosions and a supersonic detonation wave. There is a broad desire to unravel the physical mechanisms of turbulence induced DDT. For the implementation of efficient detonation methods in propulsion and energy applications, it is crucial to understand optimum turbulence conditions for detonation initiation. The study examines the role of turbulence-flame …

The Effect Of Recycled Backwash Water Operations On Fouling In A Coagulation-Ultrafiltration Process And Impact Of Preozonation On Membrane Productivity, Paul Biscardi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of research that focused on pretreatment strategies to reduce fouling of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes used for drinking water treatment, and was segmented into four key components. (1) In the first component of the work, the long-term fouling behavior of a polyethersulfone (PES) hollow-fiber UF membrane was studied at the pilot-scale for treatment of surface water over a one-year period. Pilot testing of a coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) pretreatment system revealed that chemically irreversible fouling was poorly correlated with turbidity and total organic carbon. It was also shown that recycled backwash water may have impacted membrane process performance, and that …
A Priori Synthetic Sampling For Increasing Classification Sensitivity In Imbalanced Data Sets, William Rivera
A Priori Synthetic Sampling For Increasing Classification Sensitivity In Imbalanced Data Sets, William Rivera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Building accurate classifiers for predicting group membership is made difficult when data is skewed or imbalanced which is typical of real world data sets. The classifier has the tendency to be biased towards the over represented group as a result. This imbalance is considered a class imbalance problem which will induce bias into the classifier particularly when the imbalance is high. Class imbalance data usually suffers from data intrinsic properties beyond that of imbalance alone. The problem is intensified with larger levels of imbalance most commonly found in observational studies. Extreme cases of class imbalance are commonly found in many …
