Returning To On-Campus Activities For First-Year Engineering Skills Development - A Comparative Study, Gavin Buskes, Huey Yee Chan Jan 2023

Returning To On-Campus Activities For First-Year Engineering Skills Development - A Comparative Study, Gavin Buskes, Huey Yee Chan

Practice Papers

Prior work by the authors on student skills development detailed the implementation of a suite of skills modules in a first-year engineering course. These modules were instrumental components in supporting the course’s project-based framework that offered flexibility of choice and timing in a low-risk setting. It was found that, while receiving overall favourable student feedback, most students only completed the minimum requirements and largely chose technical modules according to the relevance to their project topic. Due to the cessation of on-campus teaching activities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, these modules were delivered wholly online. With the lifting of restrictions the …

Integrating Sociotechnical Issues In The Introduction To Circuits Course, Cynthia Finelli, Susan Lord Jan 2023

Integrating Sociotechnical Issues In The Introduction To Circuits Course, Cynthia Finelli, Susan Lord

Practice Papers

Engineers frequently encounter sociotechnical issues in their work, so it is critical that they are prepared to address complex, real-world issues that require both technical and social expertise. Engineering accreditation criteria further underscore the importance of understanding sociotechnical issues by expecting engineering undergraduate programs to address ethical, global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic considerations in student outcomes. However, most engineering instructors were educated with a deep technical focus, have little experience outside of engineering, and feel ill-equipped to integrate non-technical topics. As a result, engineering is often taught in the undergraduate curricula from a purely technical perspective, with an emphasis …

Improving Communication Procedures By Means Of Videorecorded Proposals, Marta Aguilar, Jordi Olivella Jan 2023

Improving Communication Procedures By Means Of Videorecorded Proposals, Marta Aguilar, Jordi Olivella

Practice Papers

There is an agreement regarding the importance of communication in the promotion processes of all types of technical or entrepreneurial initiatives. Communication skills have to make it possible to obtain the maximum interaction with the agents involved and facilitate the commitment of these agents to a project. In this context, communicators’ erroneous perception of their own abilities and of how they are transmitting the information is a significant drawback that calls for improvement. Video-recording someone when speaking creates an impact on them given that the possibility of seeing themselves implies a significant change in the learning process. This technique has …

Engineering Student Belonging To Prevent Early Leavers Through Curriculum Decolonization, Academic Self-Concept, And Psychologically Safe Teamwork, Neil Cooke, Jacqueline Chetty, Claudia Favero, Zena Green, Neil Drury, Pieter Joubert

Practice Papers

The proportion of early leavers from engineering degrees closely follows the higher education sector throughout Europe; around 10% leave before graduation. Students are more likely to drop-out if they do not feel that they belong in the learning community. While research shows that academic achievement is a primary factor contributing to student drop-out, other student-centric social factors, such as belonging are equally important to student drop-out rates within higher education. The aim of this paper is to present a model constructed on student belonging. The model consists of 3 pillars, namely academic self-concept & professional identity, psychologically safe teamwork, and …

Teaching Sustainable Logistics As A Project-Based Learning Course, Carsten Deckert, Ahmed Mohya Jan 2023

Teaching Sustainable Logistics As A Project-Based Learning Course, Carsten Deckert, Ahmed Mohya

Practice Papers

Sustainable logistics combines the task of the 6R of logistics (right product, right place, right time, right condition, right cost) with social and environmental sustainability, especially low emissions and low resource consumption. This means that a problem that is already challenging, namely planning, executing, and controlling logistical processes, gets even more complex and requires aspects of systems thinking to incorporate environmental and social impacts. Classical approaches of teaching, e.g. lectures with presentations and short exercises on closed problems, do not do justice to the complexity and intricacies of the topic sustainability. In such a context, projectbased learning (PBL) where students …

Analysis And Design Of Secure Sampled-Data Control Subject To Denial-Of-Service Attacks, Hira Sana, Ghulam Mustafa, Owais Khan, Nouman Ashraf, Abdul Qayyum Khan, Muhammad Abid, Haroom Ur Rashid Khan

Articles

This study addresses the issue of secure control design for cyber-physical systems (CPS) against denial of service (DoS) attacks. We take into account a continuous-time linear system with a convex quadratic performance measure and a sampled linear state feedback control. DoS attacks impose constraints on the CPS, where packets may be jammed between the sensor and controller by a malicious entity, potentially resulting in system instability and performance degradation. We assume that the attacker can perform DoS attacks with a limited time and frequency due to energy restrictions. We devise an efficient procedure using the linear matrix inequality approach to …

An Aggregation-Based Algebraic Multigrid Method With Deflation Techniques And Modified Generic Factored Approximate Sparse Inverses, Anastasia Natsiou, George A. Gravvanis, Christos K. Filelis-Papadopoulos, Konstantinos M. Giannoutakis

Articles

In this paper, we examine deflation-based algebraic multigrid methods for solving large systems of linear equations. Aggregation of the unknown terms is applied for coarsening, while deflation techniques are proposed for improving the rate of convergence. More specifically, the V-cycle strategy is adopted, in which, at each iteration, the solution is computed by initially decomposing it utilizing two complementary subspaces. The approximate solution is formed by combining the solution obtained using multigrids and deflation. In order to improve performance and convergence behavior, the proposed scheme was coupled with the Modified Generic Factored Approximate Sparse Inverse preconditioner. Furthermore, a parallel version …

Swarm Electrification: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Stephen Sheridan, Keith Sunderland, Jane Courtney Jan 2023

Swarm Electrification: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Stephen Sheridan, Keith Sunderland, Jane Courtney

Articles

In the global North, the need to decarbonize power generation is well documented and the challenges faced are endemic to the design of the electrical grids. With networks relying on centralized generation, it can be difficult to replace fossil-fuel power plants with renewable energy sources as generation may be intermittent causing grid instability when there is no ‘spinning reserve’ [1]. In parts of the global south, however, many under-electrified nations have high levels of solar irradiance. This, combined with falling prices for solar panels, is allowing for alternative paths to electrification from costly grid extensions and has resulted in grids …

Although using a series compensation technique in a long transmission line effectively increases the transmittable power; it may cause a sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) phenomenon. Gate-controlled series capacitor (GCSC) is an effective method for SSR damping by controlling the turn-off angle. In the previous studies, a constant supplementary damping controller (SDC) was used for controlling the turn-off angle, which can mitigate the SSR phenomenon. However, these methods can not capture the maximum transmittable power at different operating points. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is proposed to compute the gain of SDC based on the wind speed and the …

An Adaptive Vector Control Method For Inverter-Based Stand-Alone Microgrids Considering Voltage Reduction And Load Shedding Schemes, Sumit Kumar Jha, Deepak Kumar, Prabhat Ranjan Tripathi, Bhargav Appasani, Hossam Zawbaa, Salah Kamel

Articles

The droop mechanism is widely utilized in a stand-alone microgrid (MG) to regulate power-sharing among distributed generators (DG). However, over the years, the droop phenomena are continually modified to lessen the deviation in voltage and frequency parameters caused due to classical droop. This study suggests computing the droop coefficient for voltage–current (V–I) droop to take into account for proportional power distribution among DGs. In grid utility networks, the conservation voltage reduction (CVR) strategy is widely used to curtail the use of energy. Hence, this paper investigates the CVR's performance for stand-alone MG by performing the adaptive vector control scheme in …

Setransformer: A Transformer-Based Code Semantic Parser For Code Comment Generation, Zheng Li, Yonghao Wu, Bin Peng, Xiang Chen, Zeyu Sun, Yong Liu, Paul Doyle

Conference Papers

Automated code comment generation technologies can help developers understand code intent, which can significantly reduce the cost of software maintenance and revision. The latest studies in this field mainly depend on deep neural networks, such as convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural network. However, these methods may not generate high-quality and readable code comments due to the long-term dependence problem, which means that the code blocks used to summarize information are far from each other. Owing to the long-term dependence problem, these methods forget the previous input data’s feature information during the training process. In this article, to solve the …

A Strong Scattering Solution With Applications To Remote Sensing Systems Modelling, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2023

A Strong Scattering Solution With Applications To Remote Sensing Systems Modelling, Jonathan Blackledge

Conference papers

Although not always fully appreciated as such, the linear stationary convolution model for a signal and/or image, generated by the interaction of an incident wave field with an inhomogeneous medium, is based on the ‘weak scattering condition’, commonly referred to as the ‘Born approximation’. This approximation forms the basis for signal processing and analysis associated with applications over a broad range of frequencies. The Born approximation assumes that a scattering interaction is based on single scattering events alone and that the scattered field is therefore a weak field in comparison to the incident field. The physical limitations of such a …
