A Theory-Based Teaching Concept To Embed Sustainability In The Engineering Curriculum, Brit-Maren Block, Marie Gillian Guerne

Practice Papers

The implementation of sustainable development and the responsible use of the resources available to us are among the key objectives of our time. To meet the challenges of global sustainable development, young professionals with a growing set of skills are needed. Higher education is crucial in fostering the skills graduates need to become agents of change for sustainable development. Therefore, new teaching and learning approaches are needed in engineering education that link technical and sustainability-oriented topics and integrate education for sustainable development (ESD). Studies show that there is a particular lack in the design and implementation of engineering courses that …

Unlocking Deeper Insights: A Qualitative Approach To Evaluating Stem Outreach In Engineering Education, Yiduo Wang, Lauren Schrock, Jane Andrews, Robin Clark Jan 2023

Unlocking Deeper Insights: A Qualitative Approach To Evaluating Stem Outreach In Engineering Education, Yiduo Wang, Lauren Schrock, Jane Andrews, Robin Clark

Practice Papers

Much previous research and evaluation has been conducted of STEM Outreach activities in schools using quantitative approaches. Surveys in particular are popular as they are low-cost and time-saving. However, quantitative methods are limited in that they do not generally generate deeper insights into students’ experiences in STEM; usually lacking rich detail about the context and complexity of the data being analysed. Hence, this paper proposes a different approach to evaluating STEM outreach: a unique multi-method, qualitative approach.

Starting with the Research Question “How to qualitatively evaluate STEM outreach in Engineering Education?”, this paper is grounded in ongoing doctoral research that …

The Effects Of Disinformation Upon National Attitudes Towards The Eu And Its Institutions, Alex Murphy Jan 2023

The Effects Of Disinformation Upon National Attitudes Towards The Eu And Its Institutions, Alex Murphy

Dissertations

This work explores the effects of misinformation and disinformation upon national attitudes towards the EU. Several nations, in particular the Russian Federation, have been working for decades to spread narratives that debase the political processes of healthy democracies around the world. There is strong evidence to show that extensive efforts have been made to disrupt the inner workings and overall membership of the EU, to support disruptive policies in the United States such that political deadlock is maintained indefinitely. These efforts are largely based on the spreading of misinformation and disinformation across social networks that have done very little to …

(3-Aminopropyl) Triethoxysilane-Based Immobilization Of Pt/Wo3 On A Microfiber Sensor For High Sensitivity Hydrogen Sensing, Qiao Gao, Bin Liu, Juan Liu, Shengpeng Wan, Tao Wu, Xing-Dao He, Ping Lu, Jinhui Yuan, Renli Ma, Zabih Ghassemlooy, Gerald Farrell, Qiang Wu

Articles

A novel high stability hydrogen sensor based on a Pt/WO3 coated single-mode tapered-no-core single-mode (STNCS) fiber interferometer is proposed and experimentally studied. The STNCS structure is treated by (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and then coated with Pt/WO3 nanorods. Compared to the traditional method of using poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) to adhere Pt/WO3 nanorods on the fiber surface, the APTES modified fiber forms strong covalent bonds with Pt/WO3 with stronger adhesion to the fiber surface, resulting in improved long-term stability. Experimental results show that the sensitivity of the sensor varies from -31.05 nm/% to -4.30 nm/% as the hydrogen concentration increases from 0 …

Deactivation Effects Of Tb3+ On Ho3+ Emission In Fluoroindate Glasses For 3.9 Μm Laser Applications, Zhi Zhang, Zhuowei Cheng, Ruicong Wang, Shunbin Wang, Gerald Farrell, Shijie Jia, Pengfei Wang Jan 2023

Deactivation Effects Of Tb3+ On Ho3+ Emission In Fluoroindate Glasses For 3.9 Μm Laser Applications, Zhi Zhang, Zhuowei Cheng, Ruicong Wang, Shunbin Wang, Gerald Farrell, Shijie Jia, Pengfei Wang

Articles

A series of Ho3+/Tb3+ co-doped fluoroindate glasses with good thermal stability have been synthesized to study the deactivation effects of Tb3+ on the Ho3+: 3.9 μm emission. Efficient 3.9 μm emission enhancement is obtained under excitation by an 888 nm laser diode (LD). The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) intensity parameters and radiative properties are calculated to evaluate the spectroscopic properties. Possible energy transfer processes resulting in emission reinforcement are discussed. A higher spontaneous transition probability and larger peak emission cross section are achieved with the inclusion of Tb3+. This analysis supports the conclusion that Ho3+/Tb3+ co-doped fluoroindate glass is a potentially useful …

High-Sensitivity Vector Bend Sensor Based On A Fiber Directional Coupler Inscribed By A Femtosecond Laser, Ke Tian, Mingyuan Zhang, Chuanzhein Zhao, Huibin Li, Shilong Li, Yuxuan Jiang, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang Jan 2023

High-Sensitivity Vector Bend Sensor Based On A Fiber Directional Coupler Inscribed By A Femtosecond Laser, Ke Tian, Mingyuan Zhang, Chuanzhein Zhao, Huibin Li, Shilong Li, Yuxuan Jiang, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang

Articles

In this Letter, we demonstrate a high-sensitivity vector bend sensor based on a fiber directional coupler. The fiber directional coupler is composed of two parallel waveguides inscribed within a no-core fiber (NCF) by a femtosecond laser. Since the two written waveguides have closely matched refractive indices and geometries, the transmission spectrum of the fiber directional coupler possesses periodic resonant dips. Such a fiber directional coupler exhibits a good bending-dependent spectral shift response due to its asymmetric structure. Experimental results show that bending sensitivities of -97.11 nm/m-1 and 58.22 nm/m-1 are achieved for the 0° and 180° orientations in the curvature …

Efficient 2075-Nm Laser Emission From Ho3+-Doped Fluorotellurite Glass In A Compact All-Fiber Structure, Liyuan Wang, Xiaotong Zhao, Nian Lv, Niannian Xu, Zhenrui Li, Gerald Farrell, Shunbin Wang, Pengfei Wang Jan 2023

Efficient 2075-Nm Laser Emission From Ho3+-Doped Fluorotellurite Glass In A Compact All-Fiber Structure, Liyuan Wang, Xiaotong Zhao, Nian Lv, Niannian Xu, Zhenrui Li, Gerald Farrell, Shunbin Wang, Pengfei Wang

Articles

In this Letter, we report an Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite glass all-fiber laser at 2075 nm. The gain fiber is pumped in-band with a 1976-nm fiber laser and connected by fusion splicing. A high-quality fusion splicing point with a loss of < 0.1 dB was obtained by finely adjusting the splicing power and offset. In addition, by optimizing the writing parameters, a third-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a reflectivity of 98% was achieved at 2075 nm using the femtosecond laser direct-writing method. Using the FBG as the laser cavity mirror and a relatively short 28-cm-long home-made Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite fiber as the laser medium, a laser with a maximum unsaturated output power of 7.33 W was obtained, and the corresponding slope efficiency was as high as 93.4%. The first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of the fluorotellurite glass all-fiber ∼2.1-µm laser presented in this work may pave the way for a high-power 2.1-µm fiber laser with a compact structure.

Zno Varistors – The Ideal Microstructure And Characteristics, And Methods Investigated And Developed To Achieve These, Maura Kelleher

Books/Book Chapters

ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 varistors have been extensively studied since their discovery 5 decades ago. Their function in protecting increasingly sensitive electronic components by absorbing random surges of energy is even more important today. Also, the metal oxides from which they are made from are becoming even more precious. Their electrical characteristics are highly dependent on their microstructural characteristics which are highly dependent on their composition and methods used. The purpose of this article is to explain the ideal microstructure required to obtain the ideal electrical characteristics, the powder preparation methods investigated and developed to achieve it, and some future directions are outlined.

Understanding And Quantifying Human Factors In Programming From Demonstration: A User Study Proposal, Shakra Mehak, Aayush Jain, John D. Kelleher, Philip Long, Michael Guilfoyle, Maria Chiara Leva

Conference papers

Programming by demonstration (PbD) is a promising method for robots to learn from direct, non-expert human interaction. This approach enables the interactive transfer of human skills to the robot. As the non-expert user is at the center of PbD, the efficacy of the learned skill is largely dependent on the demonstrations provided. Although PbD methods have been extensively developed and validated in the field of robotics, there has been inadequate confirmation of their effectiveness from the perspective of human teachability. To address this gap, we propose to experimentally investigate the impact of communicating robot learning process on the efficacy of …

Sgs: Mutant Reduction For Higher-Order Mutation-Based Fault Localization, Luxi Fan, Zheng Li, Hengyuan Liu, Paul Doyle, Haifeng Wang, Xiang Chen, Yong Liu

Conference Papers

MBFL (Mutation-Based Fault Localization) is one of the most commonly studied fault localization techniques due to its promising fault localization effectiveness. However, MBFL incurs a high execution cost as it needs to execute the test suite on a large number of mutants. While previous studies have proposed mutant reduction methods for FOMs (First-Order Mutants) to help alleviate the cost of MBFL, the reduction of HOMs (Higher-Order Mutants) has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we propose SGS (Statement Granularity Sampling), a method which conducts HOMs reduction for HMBFL (Higher-Order Mutation-Based Fault Localization). Considering the relationship between HOMs and statements, …

Amplifying New Voices And Making Space For Alternative Knowledge Systems In Engineering Curricula – The Example Of Ubuntu, Anita Occhio, Fiona Caroline Saunders, Gladson Chikwa, Dawn Theresa Nicholson

Practice Papers

Engineering projects are ubiquitous; from developing COVID-19 vaccines to building new cities and developing climate change solutions. An inclusive approach to teaching engineers how to master the complexities of engineering project management is vital to the deliverability of sustainability and net zero initiatives (Hockings 2010). Yet, our engineering curricula remain deeply rooted in Western epistemology (Winter et al. 2022, Mbembe 2015). Arguably, this is an opportune time to consider decolonising our curricula. At a fundamental level, ‘decolonising the curriculum’ means introducing previously ignored voices, images, authors, theories and arguments into our teaching (Rogers et al. 2022). This is a challenge …
