Application Of Advanced Computational Modelling In The Comparison Of Stent Induced Coronary Flow Disturbances, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle Feb 2007

Application Of Advanced Computational Modelling In The Comparison Of Stent Induced Coronary Flow Disturbances, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle

Conference Papers

Coronary stent implantation can improve blood flow in an artery narrowed by the build up of arterial plaque. However, the haemodynamic effect of stent placement is unclear and may influence arterial restenosis (re-blockage). In this investigation computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to predict the non-Newtonian three-dimensional flow field in a coronary artery following implantation of two different stents. A graphical illustration of the stented areas affected to various degrees of wall shear stress (WSS) is presented for both the Palmaz-Schatz (PS) and the Gianturco-Roubin-II (GR-II) coronary stents. The axial WSS and wall shear stress gradient (WSSG) is also presented …

An Optimized Macrobending Fiber Based Edge Filter, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan Jan 2007

An Optimized Macrobending Fiber Based Edge Filter, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan

Articles

An optimized all-fiber edge filter is developed, based on a one-turn macrobending bare fiber structure. The discrimination range (DR) is 16.32 dB over a wavelength range from 1500 to 1600 nm, which can be employed for wavelength measurement applications. It offers a simpler structure compared to the previously developed macrobending fiber loss edge filters, without an increase in the polarization dependent loss (PDL).

Key Signature Estimation, Matt Cranitch, Derry Fitzgerald, Matthew Hart Jan 2007

Key Signature Estimation, Matt Cranitch, Derry Fitzgerald, Matthew Hart

Conference papers

The problem of automatic key signature detection has been the focus of much research in recent years. Previous methods of key estimation have focused on chromagrams and key profiling techniques. This paper presents a remarkably simple but effective method of estimating key signature from musical recordings. The algorithm introduces the "keyogram", a concept resembling the chromagram, and is aimed for use on traditional Irish music. The keyogram is a measure of the likelihood of each possible major key signature based on a masked scoring system.

Automating Ornamentation Transcription, Mikel Gainza, Eugene Coyle Jan 2007

Automating Ornamentation Transcription, Mikel Gainza, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

A novel technique for detecting single and multi-note ornaments is presented. The system detects audio segments by utilising and onset detector based on comb filters (ODCF), which is capable of detecting very close events. In addition, a novel method to remove spurious onsets due to offset events is introduced. The system utilises musical ornamentation theory to decide whether a sequence of audio segments correspond to an ornamentation musical structure. In order to evaluate the results, a database of signals produced by different players using the three different instruments has been utilised. The results represent a step forward towards fully automating …

Automatic Bar Line Segmentation, Mikel Gainza, Dan Barry, Eugene Coyle Jan 2007

Automatic Bar Line Segmentation, Mikel Gainza, Dan Barry, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

A method that segments the audio according to the position of the bar lines is presented. The method detects musical bars that frequently repeat in different parts of a musical piece by using an audio similarity matrix. The position of each bar line is predicted by using prior information about the position of previous bar lines as well as the estimated bar length. The bar line segmentation method does not depend on the presence of percussive instruments to calculate the bar length. In addition, the alignment of the bars allows moderate tempo deviations.

Recruitment And Retention: The Role Of The Public Image Of Engineering, Eddie Conlon Jan 2007

Recruitment And Retention: The Role Of The Public Image Of Engineering, Eddie Conlon

Conference papers

This paper presents findings of three surveys conducted with first year students in the Faculty of Engineering in the Dublin Institute of Technology. It focuses on their motivation for studying engineering and the people who influenced the decision to do engineering. It shows there are gaps in the students’ knowledge of their programmes and also between their expectations and their experience of their course. Some proposed areas of action are identified to increase both recruitment and retention. It is argued that projecting an image of engineering as a creative activity would help in addressing recruitment and retention issues.

Electromagnetic Coupling Mechanism In A Layered Human Tissue Model As Reference For 434 Mhz Medical Therapy Applicators, Sergio Curto, Max Ammann

Conference papers

In order to minimize exposure to human tissue, electromagnetic interaction with antennas has benefited from a lot of research since hand-held communication transceivers became widely used consumer products. On the other hand, medical applications have been exploiting the ISM (industrial scientific and medical standard) 434 MHz frequency band for therapeutic applications such as hyperthermia. Various antennas have been used in hyperthermia applicators but advanced designs depend on improved knowledge of the radiated antenna modes and interacting influence of human tissue. As a preliminary step towards analyzing antennas interacting with tissues in the near- and far-fields, this study reports on the …

Spline Based Geometry For Printed Uwb Antenna Design, Matthias John, Max Ammann Jan 2007

Spline Based Geometry For Printed Uwb Antenna Design, Matthias John, Max Ammann

Conference papers

This paper presents a geometry for ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas which is based on quadratic Bezier spline curves. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimise the geometry. The search space for the GA is minimised in order to improve the performance and computational efficiency of the algorithm. The optimised antenna covers the entire UWB bandwidth.

Making Olsr Aware Of Resources, Karol Kowalik, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis Jan 2007

Making Olsr Aware Of Resources, Karol Kowalik, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis

Conference papers

An important element of any routing protocol used for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is the link cost function used to represent the radio link characteristic. The majority of the routing protocols for WMNs attempt to accurately characterise the radio link quality by constructing the link cost function from the measurements obtained using active probing techniques which introduces overhead. In this paper we present a modified version of the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol which uses the link cost function values provided the Resource Aware Routing for mEsh (RARE) module which employs passive monitoring to gather radio link information. This …

The Structural Reliability Of Bridges Subject To Time-Dependent Deterioration, Colin C. Caprani, C. Mcnally, E. J. O'Brien, A. Bordallo-Ruiz Jan 2007

The Structural Reliability Of Bridges Subject To Time-Dependent Deterioration, Colin C. Caprani, C. Mcnally, E. J. O'Brien, A. Bordallo-Ruiz

Conference papers

The reliability of the structural performance of any given structure is affected by both in-service loading and material deterioration due to environmental attack. They must be evaluated at any given time in order to compute lifetime probability of failure. This paper presents an innovative methodology to derive the structure lifetime load effect due to existing traffic using a statistical tool known as Predictive Likelihood. Loss of resistance due to corrosion originated by chloride ingression is also taken into account. Finally the lifetime probability of failure is evaluated via the application of a time-discretization strategy.

Engineering Science As Opposed To Natural Science, Eugene Coyle, Mike Murphy, William Grimson Jan 2007

Engineering Science As Opposed To Natural Science, Eugene Coyle, Mike Murphy, William Grimson

Books/Book chapters

In exploring the epistemology of engineering science, we propose a model of engineering. This model incorporates the goals of engineering, the approach to engineering (also called the engineering method) and the role of experience in engineering. The basis for understanding the nature of engineering science will be explored, and will be contrasted with natural science. To begin, a large-scale engineering project that was successfully completed in Ireland many years ago is discussed - specifically, the development of a megalithic passage tomb as an exemplar of the engineering method in structural design, project management and aesthetics. This exemplar firmly demonstrates that …

Spline Based Geometry For Printed Monopole Antennas, Matthias John, Max Ammann

Articles

A novel Bezier spline-based geometry for printed monopole antennas is presented. Quadratic curves are used to describe the outline of the radiating element. The geometry is optimised by a genetic algorithm. A small number of control points are used to define the geometry, ensuring a small search space for the GA. The resulting antenna has an impedance bandwidth from 1.44 to 14.7 GHz

Microstructures And Viscoelastic Properties Of Anisotropic Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen Jan 2007

Microstructures And Viscoelastic Properties Of Anisotropic Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen

Articles

The microstructures and viscoelastic properties of anisotropic magnetorheological elastomers were investigated in this paper. The measurement results show that their mechanical properties are greatly dependent on the magnetic flux density applied in preparation. A finite-column model was proposed to describe the relations between the microstructures and the viscoelastic properties. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results.

Effect Of Polarisation-Dependent Loss On The Performance Accuracy Of A Ratiometric Wavelength Measurement System, Ginu Rajan, Qian Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang Jan 2007

Effect Of Polarisation-Dependent Loss On The Performance Accuracy Of A Ratiometric Wavelength Measurement System, Ginu Rajan, Qian Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang

Articles

The polarisation-dependent loss (PDL) of a ratiometric wavelength measurement system and its influence on system's accuracy are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The PDL of a ratiometric system and the corresponding power ratio fluctuation is modelled, from which the accuracy of the measured wavelength can be estimated. An all-fibre wavelength measurement system is built to allow comparison of modelled and actual results. The measured ratio variation lies within the estimated limits. The measured wavelength error reaches about 1.41 plusmn 0.09 nm at 1550 nm in the demonstrated example (with an edge filter of average slope 0.22 dB/nm), which indicates the significant …

Quantum Dot Energy Relaxation Mediated By Plasmon Emission In Doped Covalent Semiconductor Heterostructures, A. V. Fedorov, Anna Baranov, I. D. Rukhlenko, T. S. Perova, Kevin Berwick Jan 2007

Quantum Dot Energy Relaxation Mediated By Plasmon Emission In Doped Covalent Semiconductor Heterostructures, A. V. Fedorov, Anna Baranov, I. D. Rukhlenko, T. S. Perova, Kevin Berwick

Articles

The interaction between interface plasmons within a doped substrate and quantum dot electrons or holes has been theoretically studied in double heterostructures based on covalent semiconductors. The interface plasmon modes, the corresponding dispersion relationship, and the intraband carrier relaxation rate in quantum dots are reported. We find the critical points in the interface plasmon density of states for multilayered structures results in enhanced quantum dot intraband carrier relaxation when compared to that for a single heterostructure. A detailed discussion is made of the relaxation rate and the spectral position dependencies on the quantum dot layer thickness as well as on …

Small Patch/Slot Antenna With 53% Input Impedance Bandwidth, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Jan 2007

Small Patch/Slot Antenna With 53% Input Impedance Bandwidth, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A small microstrip patch/slot antenna, which achieves a very large bandwidth on a relatively thin substrate (about 0.01lambda0), is presented. The performance is achieved by employing a combination of annular-ring loading on the patch radiator and the use of a crossed-slot for miniaturisation. An additional ring-slot in the ground plane is used to produce the wideband characteristics of the antenna. Simulated and measured results indicate that a 53% fractional impedance bandwidth is achieved with respect to the centre frequency of 1.409 GHz and the size of the antenna is reduced by 50% compared to the conventional circular patch antenna with …

Investigation On Magnetorheological Elastomers Based On Natural Rubber, Lin Chen Jan 2007

Investigation On Magnetorheological Elastomers Based On Natural Rubber, Lin Chen

Articles

Magnetorheological Elastomers (MR Elastomers or MREs) are a kind of novel smart material, whose mechanical, electrical, magnetic properties are controllable under applied magnetic fields. They have attracted increasing attentions and broad application prospects. But conventional MREs are limited to wide applications because their MR effects and mechanical performances are not high enough. This paper aims to optimize the fabrication method and to fabricate good natural rubber based MREs with high modulus by investigating the influences of a variety of fabrication conditions on the MREs performances, such as matrix type, external magnetic flux density, and temperature, plasticizer and iron particles. Among …

A Novel Processing Route For The Production Of Nanoparticulate Zinc Oxide, Declan Mccormack, Grainne Duffy, Suresh Pillai Jan 2007

A Novel Processing Route For The Production Of Nanoparticulate Zinc Oxide, Declan Mccormack, Grainne Duffy, Suresh Pillai

Articles

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have been processed from a novel isophthalate
precursor. In contrast to those processed from an oxalate precursor, this
material exhibits three-dimensional, non-directional aggregation behaviour.
Such non-directional aggregation of uniaxial crystallites may allow for the
production of structures with a higher proportion of catalytically active
surfaces than can be prepared through conventional sol–gel methods. XRD,
FTIR, TEM and SEM were used to characterize the synthesized materials.
Zinc oxide particles synthesized by using isophthalic acid
(C6H4-1,3-(COOH)2) are found to be slightly smaller than the previously
reported materials prepared through chelation with oxalic acid
(H2C2O2·2H2O).

Educating Engineers For The 21st. Century: And Why Some Elements Of History And Philosophy Should Be Incorporated Into The Curriculum, William Grimson, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle Jan 2007

Educating Engineers For The 21st. Century: And Why Some Elements Of History And Philosophy Should Be Incorporated Into The Curriculum, William Grimson, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

It has been said that in some respects the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky was a magpie – borrowing styles and ideas from diverse sources for whatever musical project he was working on. The practice of engineering has this same characteristic in that it willingly takes ideas, knowledge and techniques from wherever in pursuit of completing its goal. Further, Engineering is, at least in part, in agreement with Fyodor Dostoevsky – ‘if everything on Earth were rational, nothing would happen’. Against such a background it is proposed that a framework based on both philosophy and the history of engineering, science and …

Growing Research In A Traditionally Teaching-Oriented College, Mike Murphy, Michael Dyrenfurth Jan 2007

Growing Research In A Traditionally Teaching-Oriented College, Mike Murphy, Michael Dyrenfurth

Conference papers

There is increasing pressure on universities to contribute to ‘the knowledge society’ by increasing the level of research activity and output within the university. This is particularly true in the sciences, engineering and technology. This increased pressure applies equally to traditionally teaching-oriented colleges (TTOC), although not at the same scale as research-intensive universities. For the TTOC, given the primacy of teaching, this paper discusses the nexus between teaching and research and the question ‘why do research?’ is addressed within the overarching goal of embedding a research culture within the college. Initiatives to develop and grow sustainable research activity in traditionally …

The Role Of Spontaneous Polarization And The Thickness Of Alignment Layers On The V-Shaped Switching In Flc Cells, V. Manjuladevi, J.K. Vij, Yuri Panarin Jan 2007

The Role Of Spontaneous Polarization And The Thickness Of Alignment Layers On The V-Shaped Switching In Flc Cells, V. Manjuladevi, J.K. Vij, Yuri Panarin

Articles

Ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures with the various values of spontaneous polarizations were prepared, and the substrates were coated with different thicknesses of aligning agent. The frequency dependence of the electrooptic response of these materials in cells with various thickness of alignment layers has been measured. The coercive voltage as well as the contrast ratios are calculated. Our results support the ‘‘electrostatic model’’, according to which both the value of spontaneous polarization and the thickness of the alignment layer play important roles in the V-shaped switching.
