Impact Assessment Of High-Power Domestic Ev Charging Proliferation Of A Distribution Network, Arsalan Zaidi, Keith Sunderland, Michael Conlon
Impact Assessment Of High-Power Domestic Ev Charging Proliferation Of A Distribution Network, Arsalan Zaidi, Keith Sunderland, Michael Conlon
Articles
Transport electrification is becoming the mainstream as a means to improve efficiency, performance, andsustainability of transportation systems. Electrical vehicles (EVs) can help to de-carbonise the environment, but a downside isthe technical issues presented to the low-voltage distribution network. To quantify the stochastic nature of transport-affectedelectrification, probabilistic load flow is employed. Monte Carlo-based simulation is applied to accommodate the probabilisticuncertainties associated with variable EV charging patterns. This study considers high-power charging (up to 11 kW) at thedomestic level while monitoring power quality variations (voltage drop, voltage unbalance factor, voltage sag) standards. Thiswork focuses on the Irish and UK, distribution system operator's–transmission …

Exploration Of Approaches To Arabic Named Entity Recognition, Husamelddin Balla, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Abstract. The Named Entity Recognition (NER) task has attracted significant attention in Natural Language Processing (NLP) as it can enhance the performance of many NLP applications. In this paper, we compare English NER with Arabic NER in an experimental way to investigate the impact of using different classifiers and sets of features including language-independent and language-specific features. We explore the features and classifiers on five different datasets. We compare deep neural network architectures for NER with more traditional machine learning approaches to NER. We discover that most of the techniques and features used for English NER perform well on Arabic …

This paper studies the phase and frequency estimation problem of single-phase grid voltagesignal in the presence of DC offset and harmonics. For this purpose, a novel parameterized linear modelof the grid voltage signal is considered where the unknown frequency of the grid is considered as theparameter. Based on the developed model, a linear observer (Luenberger type) is proposed. Then usingLyapunov stability theory, an estimator of the unknown grid frequency is developed. In order to deal with thegrid harmonics, multiple parallel observers are then proposed. The proposed technique is inspired by otherLuenberger observers already proposed in the literature. Those techniques use …

The main energy losses in solar cells are related to spectral losses where high energy photons are not used efficiently, and energy is lost via thermalization which reduces the solar cell’s overall efficiency. A way to tackle this is to introduce a luminescent down-shifting layer (LDS) to convert these high energy photons into a lower energy bracket helping the solar cell to absorb them and thus generating a greater power output. In this paper, lumogen dye Violet 570 has been used as LDS coated films of 10μm and 60μm placed on top of Si solar cells. The dye was incorporated …

In this paper, we present an interpolation method based on Lebesgue sampling that could help to develop systems based time series more efficiently. Our methods can transmit times series, frequently used in health monitoring, with the same level of accuracy but using much fewer data. Our method is based in Lebesgue sampling, which collects information depending on the values of the signal (e.g. the signal output is sampled when it crosses specific limits). Lebesgue sampling contains additional information about the shape of the signal in-between two sampled points. Using this information would allow generating an interpolated signal closer to the …

Predictive maintenance models attempt to identify developing issues with industrial equipment before they become critical. In this paper, we describe both supervised and unsupervised approaches to predictive maintenance for subsea valves in the oil and gas industry. The supervised approach is appropriate for valves for which a long history of operation along with manual assessments of the state of the valves exists, while the unsupervised approach is suitable to address the cold start problem when new valves, for which we do not have an operational history, come online.
For the supervised prediction problem, we attempt to distinguish between healthy and …

This paper aims to address the DC offset rejection problem in grid synchronization algorithm. A simple approach to estimate the unknown grid frequency in the presence of DC offset is proposed for this purpose. Some of the existing techniques available in the literature use either low-pass filter or an additional integrator to eliminate the DC offset. Both approaches require an additional parameter to tune. However, tuning the additional parameter is not straightforward. Moreover, tuning the overall system can be complicated due to the presence of DC offset rejection part. The proposed approach does not require any additional parameter to tune. …

Enhanced Gas Barrier Properties Of Graphene Oxide/Rubber Composites With Strong Interfaces Constructed By Graphene Oxide And Sulfur, Long Zheng, Stephen Jerrams, Zongchao Xu, Liqun Zhang, Li Liu, Shipeng Wen
Articles
Constructing strong interfacial interactions and complex filler networks is crucial to establishing high gas barrier properties in rubber composites. In this research, sulfur-graphene oxide (S-GO) hybrids were prepared by in situ growth of sulfur on the surfaces of GO sheets. The S-GO hybrids were also introduced into butadiene styrene rubber (SBR) using a green method of latex compounding. Results showed that sulfur could melt and spread on the surface of the GO during the crosslinking process at high temperatures. This process prevented the aggregation of GO and resulted in a fine dispersion of GO and complex filler networks in S-GO/SBR …

The high gas barrier property of a rubber composite is of great significance for reducing the exhaust gas emissions due to tire rolling resistance and hence the contribution this factor makes to environmental protection. Enhanced covalent interfaces and crosslinked networks are crucial to the gas barrier property of rubber composites. In this research, γ-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPS) modified GO (MGO)/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were prepared by a synergetic strategy of latex compounding method and thiol-ene click reaction. It was found that the mercapto groups in MGO reacted with the vinyl groups in SBR molecules through thiol-ene click reaction during the crosslinking process …

Engineers often communicate with one another through drawings or sketches and understanding technical information through graphical representations is a skill necessary for engineering practice. Well-developed spatial skills are known to be important to understanding technical drawings and are therefore, important to success in engineering. Unfortunately, of all cognitive processes, spatial skills show robust gender differences, favouring males, which could contribute to the underrepresentation of women in engineering. In this research, we administered a test of spatial cognition to students enrolled in a common 3rd year course in chemical engineering . In a second session, students were given a set of …

A low-cost optical fibre sensor based on two cascaded balloon-like bent fibre (BBF) structures for simultaneous displacement and temperature measurement is reported. The sensor is fabricated by cascading two balloon-like bent single-mode fibres (SMFs) which with different bending radii, generating two separate interference dips within a limited wavelength range. The wavelength of the two interference dips exhibits different responses to external displacement and temperature variations, hence simultaneous measurement of displacement and temperature is realized. Experimental results show that the proposed optical fibre sensor achieves a displacement sensitivity of −318.8 pm/μm and a temperature sensitivity of 47.4 pm/°C. Taking advantage of …

Abstract—Lead germanate glass samples co-doped with different Er3+/Yb3+ concentrations were prepared and the color variation of the up-conversion emissions in these glasses was observed using a 980 nm laser pump. A practical optical integrated device based on Er3+ -Yb3+ co-doped lead germanate glass microsphere and a special fiber structure, consisting of single mode fiber (SMF), multimode fiber (MMF) and a suspended tricore hollow fiber (STCHF) is described. As the pump light is coupled into the microsphere from the cores suspended inside the STCHF, the microsphere fixed in the air hole of the STCHF is excited and the up-conversion emissions are …

An angled polished multimode (APM) fibre structure is described for the first time, to the best our knowledge, and its polarization dependence is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Two angled planes are established in the multimode fibre (MMF) section of a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) fibre structure using the fibre side-polishing technique, forming the APM fibre structure. This designed circular asymmetric geometry induces different propagation characteristics for the TE and TM modes within the MMF. Simulated and experimental results both show that this difference is enhanced as the polishing angle increases, and a maximum extinction ratio (ER) of the spectrum of 13 dB …

Diurnal and seasonal variations of direct solar energy circumscribe locations suitable for sole use of concentrated solar power for electricity generation, whereas to generate electricity at night and during winter months, biomass systems can be used that incur fuel expenditures and may encounter fuel supply discontinuities. Combining solar heat, biomass conversion and heat storage in a hybrid electricity generation plant may overcome the limitations of sole use of any one of these energy sources in specific geographic and/or economic conditions. In this work standalone biomass, hybrid concentrated solar power-biomass and hybrid concentrated solar power-biomass-thermal energy storage power generation systems are …

unable and ultrabroadband mid-infrared (MIR) emissions in the range of 2.5–4.5 μm are firstly reported from Co2+-doped nano-chalcogenide (ChG) glass composites. The composites embedded with a variety of binary (ZnS, CdS, ZnSe) and ternary (ZnCdS, ZnSSe) ChG nanocrystals (NCs) can be readily obtained by a simple one-step thermal annealing method. They are highly transparent in the near- and mid-infrared wavelength region. Low-cost and commercially available Er3+-doped fiber lasers can be used as the excitation source. By crystal-field engineering of the embedded NCs through cation- or anion-substitution, the emission properties of Co2+ including its emission peak wavelength and bandwidth can be …

The construction industry globally is one of the most environmentally damaging of sectors. Additionally, the resources consumed and the operational energy requirements of buildings are ‘locked-in’, potentially for decades. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recognised construction as a sector in which significant improvements can, and indeed must, be made. But the industry is often argued to be unique, in its multiplicity of stakeholders, transient organisational structures, avoidance of risk and impact on society. The current Virtual Special Issue (VSI) sought to bring together a collection of papers on progress and potential for improvement in the construction sector, in …

Purpose – The residential sector in Ireland accounted for 25 per cent of energy related CO2 emissions in 2016 through burning fossil fuels, a major contributor to climate change. In support of Ireland’s CO2 reduction targets, the existing housing stock could contribute greatly to the reduction of space-heating energy demand through retrofit. Approximately 50 per cent of Ireland’s 2m dwellings pre-date building regulations and are predominantly of cavity and solid wall construction, the performance of which has not been extensively investigated at present. Although commitment to thermal upgrade/retrofit of existing buildings may increase under future government policies, the poor characterisation …

This article presents an indirect sliding mode control (SMC) for single-ended primary-inductor converters (SEPIC). Unlike the conventional SMC methods, the proposed SMC method employs a sliding surface function based on the input current error only. The use of such sliding surface function not only simplifies the implementation but also reduces the cost of implementation. It is shown that the output voltage control can be achieved indirectly. The input current reference is generated by a proportional-integral (PI) regulator. The existence condition and the region of the closed-loop system are determined for all possibilities of the PI gains. The performance of the …

Many businesses that have embraced renewable energy projects as part of their corporate sustainability efforts lack direction concerning how the projects are assessed. This study presents a framework that prescribes the necessary stages that allow a robust project evaluation to take place. The framework should assist practitioners in ascertaining if renewable energy projects, such as wind turbines and hydroelectric generators, contribute to energy cost savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions. The conceptual framework was developed using empirical data accessed from an 850-kW wind turbine case study and a 40-kW hydro-electric case study and embraced the action research methodology. Both …

A crucial requirement for the network service provider is to satisfy the Service Level Agreements (SLA) that it has made with its customers. Coexisting network tenants may have agreed different SLAs, and thus, the service provider must be able to provide QoS differentiation in order to meet his contractual commitments. Current one-size-fits-all routing models are not appropriate for all network tenants if their individual SLA requirements are to be efficiently met. We propose a SDN-based multi-cost routing approach which allocates network resources based on a portfolio of tenant SLA, which achieves the goal of accommodating multiple tenants, given their SLAs. …

This paper considers an algorithm for transferring a digital image over an open network using a No-key(s) Protocol or Three-Way Pass and phase-only encryption/decryption. After providing a short study on the theoretical background to the method, an algorithm is presented on a step-by-step basis. Cryptanalysis is undertaken for the three intercept and single intercept cases, when it is assumed that the encrypted data is intercepted in its entirety for each pass or for any single pass, respectively. The algorithm focuses on the exchange of a JPEG image although in principle, the approach is independent of the format of the image …

Recently, the rapid development of automotive industries has given rise to large multidimensional datasets both in the production sites and after-sale services. Fault diagnostic systems are one of the services that the automotive industries provide. As a consequence of the rapid development of cars features, traditional rule-based diagnostic systems became very limited. Therefore, more sophisticated AI approaches need to be investigated towards more efficient solutions. In this paper, we focus on utilising deep learning so as to build a diagnostic system that is able to estimate the required services in an efficient and effective way. We propose a new model, …

Much audio content today is rendered as a static stereo mix: fundamentally a fixed single entity. Object-based audio envisages the delivery of sound content using a collection of individual sound ‘objects’ controlled by accompanying metadata. This offers potential for audio to be delivered in a dynamic manner providing enhanced audio for consumers. One example of such treatment is the concept of applying varying levels of data compression to sound objects thereby reducing the volume of data to be transmitted in limited bandwidth situations. This application motivates the ability to accurately classify objects in terms of their ‘hierarchy’. That is, whether …
