International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
In consideration of performance requirement of ballastless track concrete in cold regions of China, 3 types of commercially available impregnating agents were employed to research their effect on water absorption and frozen resistance of concrete, containing silanes, potassium silicate and osmotic curing agent. The results presented that coating silanes was the most effective on the reduction of water absorption among all employed impregnating agents, because of the most significant character change of concrete surface from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity which could be proved by the contact angle test of concrete. Portland cement is widely used in civil engineering. However, Portland cement-based materials are easy to be corroded by seawater in marine environment. Many research show the corrosion resistance of Portland cement mortar can be improved by add appropriate amount of mineral admixture.Sulphoaluminate cement have high strength and good corrosion seawater resistance. However, the short setting time and high hydration heat of sulphoaluminate cement limit its application in civil engineering.Portland cement-sulphoaluminate cement (PC-CSA) not only have high strength and corrosion resistance but also long setting time.In this work, the sulphoaluminate cement was used to partially replace Portland cement. A major concern in engineering education involves ensuring that youth belonging to minoritized groups have equitable access to engineering career pathways. Related research often highlights the effect of student and school characteristics on engineering success but few studies have investigated the engineering-related assets that Black families provide. This work aims to provide counterstories that highlight the presence of Black families along the pre-college engineering pathways of three Black youth from the Midwest region of the United States. The application of a counternarrative approach centers the familial capital of Black families and serves as the analytical frame for this work. The …

A Qualitative Study Of Emotions Experienced By First-Year Engineering Students During Programming Tasks, Zahra Atiq, Michael C. Loui

In introductory computer programming courses, students experience a range of emotions. Students often experience anxiety and frustration when they encounter difficulties in writing programs. Continued frustration can discourage students from pursuing engineering and computing careers. Although prior research has shown how emotions affect students’ motivation and learning, little is known about students’ emotions in programming courses. In this qualitative study of first-year engineering students taking an introductory programming course, we examined the emotions that these students experienced during programming tasks and the reasons for experiencing those emotions.
