Diffusive And Ballistic Thermo-Electric Transport, Ali Shakouri Jan 2013

Diffusive And Ballistic Thermo-Electric Transport, Ali Shakouri

Birck and NCN Publications

The efficiency of existing thermoelectric power generators is much lower than mechanical engines. We discuss the similarities and differences between solid-state thermoelectric devices and other thermal engines. In nanostructured materials, non-equilibrium energy and current transport could be important. We describe the transition between ballistic and diffusive regimes and how this can alter the thermoelectric effects and improve the energy conversion efficiency.

New Tools For The Direct Characterisation Of Finfets, G. C. Tettamanzi, A. Paul, S. Lee, Gerhard Klimeck, S. Rogge Jan 2013

New Tools For The Direct Characterisation Of Finfets, G. C. Tettamanzi, A. Paul, S. Lee, Gerhard Klimeck, S. Rogge

Birck and NCN Publications

This paper discusses how classical transport theories such as the thermionic emission (Ref. [1]), can be used as a powerful tool for the study and the understanding of the most complex mechanisms of transport in Fin Field Effect Transistors (FinFETs). By means of simple current and differential conductance measurements, taken at different temperatures and different gate voltages (VG's), it is possible to extrapolate the evolution of important parameters such as the spatial region of transport and the height of thermionic barrier at the centre of the channel. Furthermore, if the measurements are used in conjunction with simulated data, it becomes …

The Palm-Tree Index: Indexing With The Crowd, Aamer Mahmood, Walid G. Aref, Eduard Dragut, Saleh Basalamah

Cyber Center Publications

Crowdsourcing services allow employing human intelligence in tasks that are difficult to accomplish with computers such as image tagging and data collection. At a relatively low monetary cost and through web interfaces such as Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (AMT), humans can act as a computational operator in large systems. Recent work has been conducted to build database management systems that can harness the crowd power in database operators, such as sort, join, count, etc. The fundamental problem of indexing within crowdsourced databases has not been studied. In this paper, we study the problem of tree-based indexing within crowd-nabled databases. We investigate …

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A new capability of our well-known NEMO 3-D simulator (Ref. Klimeck et al., 2007 [10]) is introduced by carefully investigating the utility of III–V semiconductor quantum dots as infrared photodetectors at a wavelength of 1.2–1.5 μm. We not only present a detailed description of the simulation methodology coupled to the atomistic sp3d5s∗ tight-binding band model, but also validate the suggested methodology with a focus on a proof of principle on small GaAs quantum dots (QDs). Then, we move the simulation scope to optical properties of realistically sized dome-shaped InAs/GaAs QDs that are grown by self- assembly and typically contain a …

Determination Of Heat Transfer In Under-Floor Plenums In Buildings With Under-Floor Air Distribution Systems, Yan Xue Jan 2013

Determination Of Heat Transfer In Under-Floor Plenums In Buildings With Under-Floor Air Distribution Systems, Yan Xue

Open Access Theses

Under-Floor Air Distribution (UFAD) systems have potential advantages of energy saving and indoor air quality improvement over conventional well-mixed systems. As a ventilation strategy for buildings, a UFAD system provides conditioned air to occupied rooms through diffusers in raised floors and the air is exhausted through return grilles at the ceiling level.

Many previous researches have focused on the energy saving and air quality improvement by UFAD systems because of their high supply air temperature and room air stratification. However, few of them paid attention to the effects of the heat transfer through floor slabs on the energy performance of …

Open Access Theses

Titanium alloys are well known for their excellent strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance and is highly sought after in the aerospace industry. Additionally, titanium alloys maintain a high biocompatibility for implants and other medical devices. However, these alloys are notorious for their poor machinability. As the demand for these alloys continue to increase, improved methods of manufacture must be explored. ^ This thesis describes Laser Assisted Milling (LAML) of Ti-6AL-4V (Ti-64) alloys, which studies localized preheating of the workpiece by a laser and characterizes the improvements to the machinability of these metals. Laser parameters are determined based on …

Effect Of Anaerobic Dairy Manure Co-Digestion And Effluent Solid Separation On Volatile Fatty Acids During Manure Storage, Laura Page Jan 2013

Effect Of Anaerobic Dairy Manure Co-Digestion And Effluent Solid Separation On Volatile Fatty Acids During Manure Storage, Laura Page

Open Access Theses

Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are among the most abundant organic compounds found in animal manure and act as important intermediates in the production of methane under anaerobic digestion (AD). However, VFA also contribute to odor emissions from manure. Anaerobic digestion and separation of solids may help to reduce odor pollution during manure storage and subsequent land application by reducing VFA concentrations.

Little information about the characteristics and concentrations of VFA in dairy manure related to AD is available. This thesis presents the results of VFA production during two three-month storage studies of dairy manure collected from four different sources on …

Effects Of Blood Flow On The Heating Of Cardiac Stents Due To Radio Frequency Fields, Nate Ian Elder

Open Access Theses

A safety concern during MRI scans with implanted medical devices is heating induced by the incident RF field. This research was performed to better understand the heating of cardiac stents during MRI. Heating of cardiac stents tends to occur at their ends. The temperature rise will be affected by blood flow through the lumen of the stent. In this work, an experiment was performed to simulate heating of a cardiac stent in the presence of blood flow during exposure to the electric field induced by a 64 MHz magnetic field, which corresponds to MRI at 1.5 T. The test procedure …

Age-Related Changes To The Production Of Linguistic Prosody, Daniel Richard Barnes Jan 2013

Age-Related Changes To The Production Of Linguistic Prosody, Daniel Richard Barnes

Open Access Theses

The production of speech prosody (the rhythm, pausing, and intonation associated with natural speech) is critical to effective communication. The current study investigated the impact of age-related changes to physiology and cognition in relation to the production of two types of linguistic prosody: lexical stress and the disambiguation of syntactically ambiguous utterances. Analyses of the acoustic correlates of stress: speech intensity (or sound-pressure level; SPL), fundamental frequency (F0), key word/phrase duration, and pause duration revealed that both young and older adults effectively use these acoustic features to signal linguistic prosody, although the relative weighting of cues differed by group. Differences …

A Pulsed Jet For Generation Of Turbulent Spots In A Mach 6 Boundary Layer, Andrew Daniel Abney Jan 2013

A Pulsed Jet For Generation Of Turbulent Spots In A Mach 6 Boundary Layer, Andrew Daniel Abney

Open Access Theses

Hypersonic vehicles operate in an environment with a high level of boundary-layer pressure fluctuations. The largest of these fluctuations are due to the intermittent passage of turbulent spots within the transition region, and can be sufficiently large to affect internal components of the vehicle. In order to better predict these flow variations, a turbulent spot model could be used. The boundary layer on the Boeing/ AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel nozzle-wall provided a convenient location for studying the statistical properties of turbulent spots in a hypersonic boundary layer, including growth rates, convection velocities, and pressure-fluctuation intensities. A valve system was …

Review Of Load Rating And Posting Procedures And Requirements, Raymond Neal Chou Jan 2013

Review Of Load Rating And Posting Procedures And Requirements, Raymond Neal Chou

Open Access Theses

All states are required to load rate and post bridges in order to comply with federal standards. Load ratings are performed in order to determine the safe live load capacity of a bridge, considering the existing conditions of the bridge. Based on the load ratings, the bridge is evaluated for load posting or strengthening. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) was notified that their practice for load rating and posting did not satisfy 23 CFR 650.313, which states that bridges shall be load rated and posted according to an American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) manual. The …

Photochemical Reactions Of Naproxen, Ibuprofen And Tylosin, Yang He Jan 2013

Photochemical Reactions Of Naproxen, Ibuprofen And Tylosin, Yang He

Open Access Theses

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) include a wide range of compounds that are used extensively and sometimes daily by people. Some PPCPs have been detected in surface water (streams, rivers, lakes) due to incomplete removal in wastewater treatment plants. The water contaminated by PPCPs is harmful to aquatic organisms and human. Naproxen (NXP), ibuprofen (IBP) and tylosin (TYL) are chosen as representative PPCPs in the current research, because they are consumed in large quantities throughout the world and there is limited data about photodegradation of these compounds in aqueous solution at the wavelength of 254 nm.

The combination of …

Time Domain Simulation Of Novel Photovoltaic Materials, Haejun Chung Jan 2013

Time Domain Simulation Of Novel Photovoltaic Materials, Haejun Chung

Open Access Theses

Thin-film silicon-based solar cells have operated far from the Shockley- Queisser limit in all experiments to date. Novel light-trapping structures, however, may help address this limitation. Finite-difference time domain simulation methods offer the potential to accurately determine the light-trapping potential of arbitrary dielectric structures, but suffer from materials modeling problems. In this thesis, existing dispersion models for novel photovoltaic materials will be reviewed, and a novel dispersion model, known as the quadratic complex rational function (QCRF), will be proposed. It has the advantage of accurately fitting experimental semiconductor dielectric values over a wide bandwidth in a numerically stable fashion. Applying …

Estimation Of Watershed Nitrate Loads On Drained Agricultural Lands, Yan Jiang Jan 2013

Estimation Of Watershed Nitrate Loads On Drained Agricultural Lands, Yan Jiang

Open Access Theses

Estimation of nutrient load is critical for many applications in water quality management; however, infrequent data monitoring and measurement error could raise considerable uncertainty in the load estimations. The objectives of this study were to quantify the overall uncertainty in annual nitrate-N load estimates, and develop a statistical model to predict nitrate loads based on subsurface drainage characteristics in Indiana watersheds. Nitrate was selected as the study object because of the high loads common in Midwestern streams, and its important influence on hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico.

A standard error propagation method was used to quantify the uncertainty from …

Specific Salt Effects On The Formation And Thermal Transitions Among Β-Lactoglobulin And Pectin Electrostatic Complexes, Stacey Ann Hirt Jan 2013

Specific Salt Effects On The Formation And Thermal Transitions Among Β-Lactoglobulin And Pectin Electrostatic Complexes, Stacey Ann Hirt

Open Access Theses

Factors of ion specificity and ionic strength (I~0-100) were studied in the electrostatic complex formation and protein particle formation by thermal treatment for a β-lactoglobulin and pectin system. ζ-potential showed β-lactoglobulin and pectin began to interact near pH 5.50 and interactions were strengthened with decrease in pH. Visible light turbidimetry and light scattering at 90° revealed a trend in critical pH transitions for electrostatic complex formation based on both the ionic strength and the anion of the salt species, while effects of the monovalent cation was insignificant. Critical pH values for complex formation and separation (pHc and pHΦ) decreased with …

Assessing Variability In Microstructural Influence On Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior, Matthew James Durbin Jan 2013

Assessing Variability In Microstructural Influence On Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior, Matthew James Durbin

Open Access Theses

The effect of microstructural variability has long been recognized as a major contributing factor in the scatter of published fatigue data. It is also acknowledged that these effects are generally more prevalent for short cracks and in the threshold region. A number of models exist to explain individual microstructural effects such as grain boundary influence, grain cluster, average grain size, porosity etc. It is the aim of the Aeronautics and Astronautics Fatigue Lab to develop an encompassing model that accurately predicts these effects.

In order to develop this model a range of material data will be required to inform and …

Autonomous Orientation And Geolocation Via Celestial Objects, Cheng Liu

Open Access Theses

Based on a hemispherical sensor geometry, a novel celestial navigation system is developed to use celestial objects to determine the absolute location and orientation information without the aid of satellites via two different approaches.

The first approach employs a hemispherical arrangement of light intensity sensors to determine the vector to the dominant light source. We present the sensing system to measure the sun vector via least squares method and achieve the application of a low-cost, small-sized solar compass. The system is shown to work well under ideal conditions but is susceptible to noise and uncertainties in some situations.

The second …

Vibrational Photoacoustic Tomography: Deep Tissue Imaging With Biomarker Sensitivity, Rui Li Jan 2013

Vibrational Photoacoustic Tomography: Deep Tissue Imaging With Biomarker Sensitivity, Rui Li

Open Access Theses

As a molecular and functional imaging modality, photoacoustic imaging has been applied to animals or human organs such as breast, brain and skin. Till now, the contrast mechanism of photoacoustic imaging is mainly based on electronic absorption in visible and near infrared region. Inherent molecular vibration offers a contrast mechanism for chemical imaging in a label free manner. In vibrational microscopy based on either infrared absorption or Raman scattering, the imaging depth is limited to the ballistic photon mean free path, which is a few hundred microns in a biological sample. Owing to much weaker acoustic scattering in tissues as …

International Standardization Compliance In Aviation, Tyler Brogden Spence Jan 2013

International Standardization Compliance In Aviation, Tyler Brogden Spence

Open Access Theses

The commercial aviation industry is global in the sense that passengers travel around the world from destination to destination. It is also global in that the states of the world (countries) regulate the industry domestically and internationally. There is a unique stage where the world comes together to promote aviation, discuss ideas and establish international standards. This stage is the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The 191 current member states signed treaties acknowledging their commitment to abiding by the standards and practices established by ICAO. No state is 100 percent compliant with international standards, however, and the purpose of this …

Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is a surgical method used for the excision of aggressive skin cancers in areas of high cosmetic importance, such as the face and hands. The practice has been gaining popularity worldwide for its low recurrence rates and cosmetic results. Current clinics though are plagued by extreme wait times and an overall poor patient experience. In this paper we look to explore this problem by applying systems engineering principles including optimization and scheduling with the goal of improving the patient experience. Currently, little literature exists exploring the difficulties associated with scheduling for MMS clinic which primarily revolve …

Adaptive Nonlinear Control For Autonomous Ground Vehicles, William Spencer Black Jan 2013

Adaptive Nonlinear Control For Autonomous Ground Vehicles, William Spencer Black

Open Access Theses

We present the background and motivation for ground vehicle autonomy, and focus on uses for space-exploration. Using a simple design example of an autonomous ground vehicle we derive the equations of motion. After providing the mathematical background for nonlinear systems and control we present two common methods for exactly linearizing nonlinear systems, feedback linearization and backstepping. We use these in combination with three adaptive control methods: model reference adaptive control, adaptive sliding mode control, and extremum-seeking model reference adaptive control. We show the performances of each combination through several simulation results. We then consider disturbances in the system, and design …

The Perceptual Salience Of Amplitude Modulated Cortical Stimulation: Peak Equivalence Or Rms Equivalence?, Oliver Brian Regele Jan 2013

The Perceptual Salience Of Amplitude Modulated Cortical Stimulation: Peak Equivalence Or Rms Equivalence?, Oliver Brian Regele

Open Access Theses

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) is a method of electrically stimulating the primary motor, visual, somatosensory and auditory cortices in the brain. The goal is to replace deficient sensory function in cases such as deafness, blindness and paralysis. However these neural prosthetics have not made the full transition to clinical trials due to a lack of sufficient investigation into the optimal stimulation waveforms. Sinusoidally amplitude modulated (SAM) signals have been shown to be important to sensory systems, yet have not been fully explored as a stimulation waveform for stimulating cortical tissue.

This work represents an investigation into the detection characteristics of electrical …
