Variation-Derived Chip Security And Accelerated Simulation Of Variations, William Paul Griffin
Variation-Derived Chip Security And Accelerated Simulation Of Variations, William Paul Griffin
Open Access Dissertations
In modern ICs, variations can be quite troublesome. Ensuring quality and yield requires careful and resource-intensive simulation under the effects of parameter variations. Threshold voltage approximation of parameter variations can help accelerate simulations, but it comes with unknown losses in quality. Instead, we propose a parameter reduction technique designed to minimize quality loss through careful analysis of the source transistor model and the set of input parameter variations. Using Pao-Sah's Double Integral model, we demonstrate the relative quality of our reduced parameter approach versus threshold voltage approximation.
Despite their negative role in circuitry, variations can be useful for security applications. …
Cloud To Cloud Registration For 3d Point Data, Darion Shawn Grant
Cloud To Cloud Registration For 3d Point Data, Darion Shawn Grant
Open Access Dissertations
The vast potential of digital representation of objects by large collections of 3D points is being recognized on a global scale and has given rise to the popularity of point cloud data (PCD). 3D imaging sensors provide a means for quickly capturing dense and accurate geospatial information that represent the 3D geometry of objects in a digital environment. Due to spatial and temporal constraints, it is quite common that two or more sets of PCD are obtained to provide full 3D analysis. It is therefore quite essential that all the PCD are referenced to a homogeneous coordinate frame of reference. …
Automatically Optimizing Tree Traversal Algorithms, Youngjoon Jo
Automatically Optimizing Tree Traversal Algorithms, Youngjoon Jo
Open Access Dissertations
Many domains in computer science, from data-mining to graphics to computational astrophysics, focus heavily on irregular applications. In contrast to regular applications, which operate over dense matrices and arrays, irregular programs manipulate and traverse complex data structures like trees and graphs. As irregular applications operate on ever larger datasets, their performance suffers from poor locality and parallelism. Programmers are burdened with the arduous task of manually tuning such applications for better performance. Generally applicable techniques to optimize irregular applications are highly desired, yet scarce.
In this dissertation, we argue that, for an important subset of irregular programs which arises in …
How Engineering Innovators Characterize Engineering Innovativeness: A Qualitative Study, Daniel Michael Ferguson
How Engineering Innovators Characterize Engineering Innovativeness: A Qualitative Study, Daniel Michael Ferguson
Open Access Dissertations
The use of science and engineering skills to address the problems of modern society is regarded as an economic strategy in developed countries across the world. However, business and political leaders in the United States feel that we, as a society, do not understand that new global competition can match and even outpace us on innovation. Many of the studies on innovators are not specific to engineers. This study filled a gap in the understanding of what characteristics constitute innovative behavior in engineers.
The purpose of this study was to explore engineers' views of innovation and innovators who create and …
Mitigating The Cost, Performance, And Power Overheads Induced By Load Variations In Multicore Cloud Servers, Yu-Ju Hong
Mitigating The Cost, Performance, And Power Overheads Induced By Load Variations In Multicore Cloud Servers, Yu-Ju Hong
Open Access Dissertations
Load variations whether in space or time pose a significant challenge to system designers. These load variations may induce inefficiencies such as load imbalance and over-provisioning, resulting in performance/power/cost overheads. The goal of my research is to mitigate such variation-induced overheads in multicore cloud servers.
First, I focus on power/performance overheads in on-chip networks of a multicore chip. We design an on-chip network that is robust in both performance and energy across applications for time- and space-varying loads. Existing flow control mechanisms that perform well at high (low) loads suffer power and/or energy overheads at low (high) loads. In contrast, …
Subgrid Scale Modeling For Large Eddy Simulation Of Buoyant Turbulent Flows, Niranjan Shrinivas Ghaisas
Subgrid Scale Modeling For Large Eddy Simulation Of Buoyant Turbulent Flows, Niranjan Shrinivas Ghaisas
Open Access Dissertations
Buoyancy effects due to small density differences commonly exist in turbulent fluid flows occurring in nature and in engineering applications. The large eddy simulation (LES) technique, which is being increasingly used for simulating buoyant turbulent flows, requires accurate modeling of the subgrid sclae (SGS) momentum and buoyancy fluxes. This thesis presents a series of LES and direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies towards a priori and a posteriori evaluation of existing SGS models, and development of new SGS models for the buoyancy flux. This thesis also presents the application of LES, in elucidating qualitative physical features and accurate measures of important …
Solution To Certain Problems In The Failure Of Composite Structures, Jonathan Goodsell
Solution To Certain Problems In The Failure Of Composite Structures, Jonathan Goodsell
Open Access Dissertations
The present work contains the solution of two problems in composite structures. In the first, an approximate elasticity solution for prediction of the displacement, stress and strain fields within the m-layer, symmetric and balanced angle-ply composite laminate of finite-width subjected anticlastic bending deformation is developed. The solution is shown to recover classical laminated plate theory predictions at interior regions of the laminate and thereby illustrates the boundary layer character of this interlaminar phenomenon. The results exhibit the anticipated response in congruence with the solutions for uniform axial extension and uniform temperature change, where divergence of the interlaminar shearing stress is …

Ozonation Systems As A Non-Chemical Alternative For Stored Grain Protection, Carlos A. Campabadal
Open Access Dissertations
The use of ozone as a non-chemical alternative in stored grain protection was studied by conducting scale-up demonstrations using a fixed bed ozonation system and developing a semi-continuous counterflow and a continuous flow ozonation treatment system. The objectives of this research were to determine the efficacy of ozonation to control insect pests without affecting end-use quality; to prove the concept of the semi-continuous counterflow ozonation system to ozonate grain at a faster rate and quantify its effect on mold growth reduction; to evaluate the efficacy of a modified screw conveyor for pest control by treating grain in a continuous-flow ozonation …
Advanced Control Strategies For Mobile Hydraulic Applications, Davide Cristofori
Advanced Control Strategies For Mobile Hydraulic Applications, Davide Cristofori
Open Access Dissertations
Mobile hydraulic machines are affected by numerous undesired dynamics, mainly discontinuous motion and vibrations. Over the years, many methods have been developed to limit the extent of those undesired dynamics and improve controllability and safety of operation of the machine. However, in most of the cases, today's methods do not significantly differ from those developed in a time when electronic controllers were slower and less reliable than they are today.
This dissertation addresses this aspect and presents a unique control method designed to be applicable to all mobile hydraulic machines controlled by proportional directional valves. In particular, the proposed control …
Transmit Signal Design For Mimo Radar And Massive Mimo Channel Estimation, Andrew Jason Duly
Transmit Signal Design For Mimo Radar And Massive Mimo Channel Estimation, Andrew Jason Duly
Open Access Dissertations
The widespread availability of antenna arrays and the capability to independently control signal emissions from each antenna make transmit signal design increasingly important for radar and wireless communication systems. In the rst part of this work, we develop the framework for a MIMO radar transmit scheme which trades o waveform diversity for beampattern directivity. Time-division beamforming consists of a linear precoder that provides direct control of the transmit beampattern and is able to form multiple transmit beams in a single pulse. The MIMO receive ambiguity function, which incorporates the receiver structure, reveals a space and delay-Doppler separability that emphasizes the …
Numerical Techniques For The Noninvasive Assessment Of Material Properties And Stresses In Soft Biomaterials, Kent David Butz
Numerical Techniques For The Noninvasive Assessment Of Material Properties And Stresses In Soft Biomaterials, Kent David Butz
Open Access Dissertations
The noninvasive measurement of finite displacements and strains in biomaterials by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be shown to enable mathematical estimates of stress distributions and material properties within structures of the body such as articular cartilage or the intervertebral disc. Such methods will allow for non-contact and patient-specific modeling in a manner not currently possible with traditional mechanical testing or finite element techniques. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to develop computational methods incorporating imaging-based measures of deformation, composition, and local microstructure to permit nondestructive analysis of a range of complex biomechanical systems.
Finite strain-based models were developed …
Rf To Millimeter-Wave Linear Power Amplifiers In Nanoscale Cmos Soi Technology, Jing-Hwa Chen
Rf To Millimeter-Wave Linear Power Amplifiers In Nanoscale Cmos Soi Technology, Jing-Hwa Chen
Open Access Dissertations
The low manufacturing cost, integration capability with baseband and digital circuits, and high operating frequency of nanoscale CMOS technologies have propelled their applications into RF and microwave systems. Implementing fully-integrated RF to millimeter-wave (mm-wave) CMOS power amplifiers (PAs), nevertheless, remains challenging due to the low breakdown voltages of CMOS transistors and the loss from on-chip matching networks. These limitations have reduced the design space of CMOS power amplifiers to narrow-band, low linearity metrics often with insufficient gain, output power, and efficiency.
A new topology for implementing power amplifiers based on stacking of CMOS SOI transistors is proposed. The input RF …
Direct And Indirect Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Biomass Storage: Implications For Life Cycle Assessment Of Biofuels, Isaac Robert Emery
Direct And Indirect Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Biomass Storage: Implications For Life Cycle Assessment Of Biofuels, Isaac Robert Emery
Open Access Dissertations
Ethanol and other biofuels from cellulosic feedstocks are currently the most promising candidates to replace a large fraction of gasoline consumption in the United States and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Gaps in current approaches to estimating the net greenhouse gas emissions from second-generation biofuels may lead to underestimation of the carbon intensity of these fuels. Current life cycle assessment models of biofuels do not sufficiently account for biomass losses and emissions associated with the harvest and storage of biomass feedstocks, which can require additional fuel and materials use on the farm as well as reducing the effective yield of a …
Multiscale Modeling Of The Hierarchical Structure Of Cellulose Nanocrystals, Fernando Luis Dri
Multiscale Modeling Of The Hierarchical Structure Of Cellulose Nanocrystals, Fernando Luis Dri
Open Access Dissertations
Cellulose constitutes the most abundant renewable polymeric resource available today. It considered an almost inexhaustible source of raw material, and holds great promise in meeting increasing demands for environmentally friendly and biocompatible products. Key future applications are currently under development for the automotive, aerospace and textile industries. When cellulose fibers are subjected to acid hydrolysis, the fibers yield rod-like, highly crystalline residues called cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). These particles show remarkable mechanical and chemical properties (e.g. Young Modulus ~200 GPa) within the range of other synthetically-developed reinforcement materials. Critical to the design of these materials are fundamental material properties, many of …

Spectroscopic And Kinetic Study Of Copper-Exchanged Zeolites For The Selective Catalytic Reduction Of Nox With Ammonia, Shane Adam Bates
Open Access Dissertations
The recent application of metal-exchanged, small-pore zeolites for use in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with ammonia NH3 for automotive deNOx applications has been a great stride in achieving emission standard goals. Copper-exchanged SSZ-13 (Cu-SSZ-13), the small-pore zeolite in this study, has been shown to be very hydrothermally stable and active under conditions presented in the exhaust of the lean-burn diesel engine. In this work, detailed studies were performed to identify many aspects of the active site(s) in Cu-SSZ-13 in order to learn about the standard SCR mechanism.
A series of seven Cu-SSZ-13 samples were …
Effects Of Hearing Aid Amplification On Robust Neural Coding Of Speech, Jonathan Daniel Boley
Effects Of Hearing Aid Amplification On Robust Neural Coding Of Speech, Jonathan Daniel Boley
Open Access Dissertations
Hearing aids are able to restore some hearing abilities for people with auditory impairments, but background noise remains a significant problem. Unfortunately, we know very little about how speech is encoded in the auditory system, particularly in impaired systems with prosthetic amplifiers. There is growing evidence that relative timing in the neural signals (known as spatiotemporal coding) is important for speech perception, but there is little research that relates spatiotemporal coding and hearing aid amplification.
This research uses a combination of computational modeling and physiological experiments to characterize how hearing aids affect vowel coding in noise at the level of …
Detecting And Quantifying Damage In Buildings Using Earthquake Response Data And Capacity Curves, Jeffrey David Dowgala
Detecting And Quantifying Damage In Buildings Using Earthquake Response Data And Capacity Curves, Jeffrey David Dowgala
Open Access Dissertations
In the process of designing a building for seismic resistance, structural engineers design with the intent of preventing collapse while expecting inelastic behavior to occur in extreme strong ground motion events. Structural engineers rely on idealized mathematical models of the structural systems and nonlinear analysis methods to estimate the capacity of a building to resist the demand of strong earthquake ground motions. Compared to estimates and approximations based on numerical nonlinear analyses, a capacity curve constructed from actual building response data would be a more realistic representation of the behavior for the building. A method is presented on how capacity …
Applicability Of Continuum Fracture Mechanics In Atomistic Systems, Shao-Huan Cheng
Applicability Of Continuum Fracture Mechanics In Atomistic Systems, Shao-Huan Cheng
Open Access Dissertations
By quantitating the amplitude of the unbounded stress, the continuum fracture mechanics defines the stress intensity factor K to characterize the stress and displacement fields in the vicinity of the crack tip, thereby developing the relation between the stress singularity and surface energy (energy release rate G). This G-K relation, assigning physical meaning to the stress intensity factor, makes these two fracture parameters widely used in predicting the onset of crack propagation. However, due to the discrete nature of the atomistic structures without stress singularity, there might be discrepancy between the failure prediction and the reality of nanostructured materials. Defining …
Non-Silicon Mosfets And Circuits With Atomic Layer Deposited Higher-K Dielectrics, Lin Dong
Non-Silicon Mosfets And Circuits With Atomic Layer Deposited Higher-K Dielectrics, Lin Dong
Open Access Dissertations
The quest for technologies beyond 14nm node complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices has now called for research on higher-k gate dielectrics integration with high mobility channel materials such as III-V semiconductors and germanium. Ternary oxides, such as La2-xYxO3 and LaAlO3, have been considered as strong candidates due to their high dielectric constants and good thermal stability. Meanwhile, the unique abilities of delivering large area uniform thin film, excellent controlling of composition and thickness to an atomic level, which are keys to ultra-scaled devices, have made atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique an excellent choice.
In this thesis, we systematically study the atomic …
Technology Agnostic Analysis And Design For Improved Performance, Variability, And Reliability In Thin Film Photovoltaics, Sourabh Dongaonkar
Technology Agnostic Analysis And Design For Improved Performance, Variability, And Reliability In Thin Film Photovoltaics, Sourabh Dongaonkar
Open Access Dissertations
Thin film photovoltaics (TFPV) offer low cost alternatives to conventional crystalline Silicon (c-Si) PV, and can enable novel applications of PV technology. Their large scale adoption however, requires significant improvements in process yield, and operational reliability. In order to address these challenges, comprehensive understanding of factors affecting panel yield, and predictive models of performance reliability are needed. This has proved to be especially challenging for TFPV for two reasons in particular. First, TFPV technologies encompass a wide variety of materials, processes, and structures, which fragments the research effort. Moreover, the monolithic manufacturing of TFPV modules differs significantly from that of …
Experimental Investigation Of Ultrawideband Wireless Systems: Waveform Generation, Propagation Estimation, And Dispersion Compensation, Amir Dezfooliyan
Experimental Investigation Of Ultrawideband Wireless Systems: Waveform Generation, Propagation Estimation, And Dispersion Compensation, Amir Dezfooliyan
Open Access Dissertations
Ultrawideband (UWB) is an emerging technology for the future high-speed wireless communication systems. Although this technology offers several unique advantages like robustness to fading, large channel capacity and strong anti-jamming ability, there are a number of practical challenges which are topics of current research. One key challenge is the increased multipath dispersion which results because of the fine temporal resolution. The received response consists of different components, which have certain delays and attenuations due to the paths they took in their propagation from the transmitter to the receiver. Although such challenges have been investigated to some extent, they have not …

Hypothesize-And-Verify Based Solutions For Place Recognition And Mobile Robot Self-Localization In Interior Hallways, Khalil Mustafa Ahmad Yousef
Open Access Dissertations
There is much research interest currently in having mobile robots build accurate and visually dense models ofinterior space as they traverse through such spaces. One of the interesting problems that has came out of this research is that of visual place recognition and self-localization. This is the problem that forms the focus of the present dissertation. We show how dense and accurate 3D models of the interior space can be constructed using a hierarchical sensor-fusion architecture. Our system fuses images from a single photometric camera with range data from a laser scanning sensor. The range data used is rudimentary--the range …

Water-gas shift (WGS), CO + H2 O [Special characters omitted.] CO2 + H2 (ΔH° = -41 kJ mol -1 ), is an industrially important reaction for the production of high purity hydrogen. Commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2 O3 catalystsare employed to accelerate this reaction, yet these catalysts suffer from certain drawbacks, including costly regeneration processes and sulfur poisoning. Extensive research is focused on developing new catalysts to replace the current technology. Supported noble metals stand out as promising candidates, yet comprise intricate nanostructures complicating the understanding of their working mechanism.
In this study, the structure of the supported …
A Novel Multiblock Immersed Boundary Method Enabling High Order Large Eddy Simulation Of Pathological And Medical Device Hemodynamics, Anupindi Kameswararao
A Novel Multiblock Immersed Boundary Method Enabling High Order Large Eddy Simulation Of Pathological And Medical Device Hemodynamics, Anupindi Kameswararao
Open Access Dissertations
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are becoming a reliable tool in understanding disease progression, investigating blood flow patterns and evaluating medical device performance such as stent grafts and mechanical heart valves. Previous studies indicate the presence of highly disturbed, transitional and mildly turbulent flow in healthy and pathological arteries. Accurate simulation of the transitional flow requires high order numerics together with a scale resolving turbulence model such as large eddy simulation (LES). This in turn limits one to use a structured fluid flow solver on which complex, branching arterial domains that are typical in the human blood circulatory system could …
Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi
Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi
Open Access Dissertations
Nonlinear mixing effects inherent in hyperspectral data are not properly represented in linear spectral unmixing models. Although direct nonlinear unmixing models provide capability to capture nonlinear phenomena, they are difficult to formulate and the results are not always generalizable. Manifold learning based spectral unmixing accommodates nonlinearity in the data in the feature extraction stage followed by linear mixing, thereby incorporating some characteristics of nonlinearity while retaining advantages of linear unmixing approaches. Since endmember selection is critical to successful spectral unmixing, it is important to select proper endmembers from the manifold space. However, excessive computational burden hinders development of manifolds for …
Molecular Dynamics At Constant Pressure: Allowing The System To Control Volume Fluctuations Via A “Shell” Particle, Mark J. Uline, David S. Corti
Molecular Dynamics At Constant Pressure: Allowing The System To Control Volume Fluctuations Via A “Shell” Particle, Mark J. Uline, David S. Corti
School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
Since most experimental observations are performed at constant temperature and pressure, the isothermal-isobaric (NPT) ensemble has been widely used in molecular simulations. Nevertheless, the NPT ensemble has only recently been placed on a rigorous foundation. The proper formulation of the NPT ensemble requires a “shell” particle to uniquely identify the volume of the system, thereby avoiding the redundant counting of configurations. Here, we review our recent work in incorporating a shell particle into molecular dynamics simulation algorithms to generate the correct NPT ensemble averages. Unlike previous methods, a piston of unknown mass is no longer needed to control …
Near Sputter-Threshold Gasb Nanopatterning, Osman El-Atwani, Sean Gonderman, Jean Paul Allain
Near Sputter-Threshold Gasb Nanopatterning, Osman El-Atwani, Sean Gonderman, Jean Paul Allain
Birck and NCN Publications
Nanopatterning at sputter-threshold energies with Ar irradiation of GaSb (100) surfaces is presented. Comparison with high-energy irradiations up to 1000 eV is conducted measuring in-situ the composition evolution over irradiation time at early stages (e. g., < 10(17) cm(-2)) and up to nanostructure saturation (e. g., similar to 10(18) cm(-2)). Low-energy irradiation is conducted for energies between 15-100 eV and a low-aspect ratio nanostructured dot formation is found. Furthermore, the role of oxide on GaSb is found to delay nanostructure formation and this is predominant at energies below 100 eV. In-situ quartz crystal microbalance measurements collect sputtered particles yielding the sputter rate at threshold energies indicating a correlation between erosion and surface composition consistent with recent theoretical models. Ion-induced segregation is also found and indicated by both compositional measurements of both the surface and the sputtered plume. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Giant Quasiparticle Bandgap Modulation In Graphene Nanoribbons Supported On Weakly Interacting Surfaces, Xueping Jiang, Neerav Kharche, Paul Kohl, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck, Mathieu Luisier, Pulickel M. Ajayan, Saroj K. Nayak
Birck and NCN Publications
In general, there are two major factors affecting bandgaps in nanostructures: (i) the enhanced electron-electron interactions due to confinement and (ii) the modified selfenergy of electrons due to the dielectric screening. While recent theoretical studies on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) report on the first effect, the effect of dielectric screening from the surrounding materials such as substrates has not been thoroughly investigated. Using large-scale electronic structure calculations based on the GW approach, we show that when GNRs are deposited on substrates, bandgaps get strongly suppressed (by as much as 1 eV) even though the GNR-substrate interaction is weak.

Quantum Hall Effect In Monolayer-Bilayer Graphene Planar Junctions, Jifa Tian, Yongjin Jiang, Isaac Childres, Helin Cao, Jiangping Hu, Yong P. Chen
Birck and NCN Publications
The Hall resistance of a homogeneous electron system is well known to be antisymmetric with respect to the magnetic field and the sign of charge carriers. We have observed that such symmetries no longer hold in planar hybrid structures consisting of partly single layer graphene (SLG) and partly bilayer graphene (BLG) in the quantum Hall (QH) regime. In particular, the Hall resistance across the SLG and BLG interface is observed to exhibit quantized plateaus that switch between those characteristic of SLG QH states and BLG QH states when either the sign of the charge carriers (controlled by a back gate) …

Effects Of Nanocrystal Shape And Size On The Temperature Sensitivity In Raman Thermometry, Liangliang Chen, Kelly Rickey, Qing Zhao, Christopher Robinson, Xiulin Ruan
Birck and NCN Publications
The effects of CdSe nanocrystal (NC) shape and size on the temperature sensitivity of the Raman shift have been investigated, for the interest of Raman thermometry using NCs. For spherical CdSe NCs of diameters 2.8 nm, 3.6 nm, and 4.4 nm, the temperature sensitivities are -0.0131 cm(-1)/K, -0.0171 cm(-1)/K, and -0.0242 cm(-1)/K, respectively. This trend indicates that as the diameter increases, the effect of increasing phonon anharmonicity dominates over the effect of the decreasing thermal expansion coefficient. On the other hand, triangular NCs with a size of 4.2 nm and elongated NCs of a dimension of 4.6 nm by 14 …
